বাণিজ্যিক কারণে দেশে অনেক মেডিকেল কলেজ স্থাপন করা হয়েছে। আদালতের নির্দেশের কারণে অনেক বন্ধ মেডিকেল কলেজ চালু করা হয়েছে। মেডিকেল কলেজগুলোতে চিকিৎসার মান ঠিকমত পালন করা হচ্ছে কিনা তা কঠোরভাবে মনিটরিং করার জন্য প্রধানমন্ত্রী নির্দেশ অনুসারে প্রতিটি বিভাগে একটি করে মেডিকেল বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় স্থাপনের সিদ্ধান্ত নেয়া হয়। সেই নির্দেশ অনুযায়ী ইতোমধ্যে চট্টগ্রাম ও রাজশাহী মেডিকেল বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় স্থাপন করা হয়েছে। সিলেট মেডিকেল বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় সেই নির্দেশ এর ৪র্থ মেডিকেল বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়। বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়টির অবকাঠামোগত কাজ নির্মানাধিন রয়েছে, এখন পর্যন্ত অস্থায়ী কার্যালয়ে প্রাথমিক কার্যক্রম শুরু হলেও আশা করা হচ্ছে দেড় বছরের মধ্যে পূর্ণাঙ্গ অবকাঠামো নিয়ে চালু হবে এ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় । প্রায় ১০০একর নতুন জমি অধিগ্রহন করা হয়েছে প্রতিষ্ঠানটির জন্য । ধিরে ধিরে গড়ে তোলা হচ্ছে এর সকল ভৌত অবকাঠামোগত ভবন ও অন্যান্য বিষয় সমূহ । সিলেট মেডিকেল বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় পুরোপুরি প্রতিষ্ঠিত হলে প্রতি বছর যে শুধুমাত্র শতাধিক ছাত্রছাত্রী উন্নত মানের পড়ালেখা করার সুযোগ পাবে তাই না,এতে থাকবে প্রায় এক হাজার সয্যার একটি হাসপাতাল বিভাগ ।
