Shanghai Tech have highly unethical hiring practices. I underwent months of interviews and meetings throughout which period I was repeatedly told that my job offer would be 'a formality'. I was eventually turned down for two extremely vague and nonsensical reasons. This is not a case of sour grapes - I probably wouldn't have taken the role anyway - but when a university 'leads on' a candidate in such a way, in so doing wasting huge amounts of their time, it damn well owes them an explanation longer than half a sentence. They also appear to have no formal complaints procedure - or at least not one it's employees are prepared to share despite being asked many times. All in all, a very dubious and unprofessional outfit, based on my experience.

I am deeply concerned about the ethical standards upheld at ShanghaiTech University, particularly in relation to its student body. Peng Wandi, a notorious animal abuser, is involved in activities that raise serious ethical questions. Despite these concerns, the university appears to have taken no action to address or investigate the matter. This inaction raises doubts about the institution's commitment to ethical standards and values. Such a stance potentially reflects on the overall reputation of the university and its alumni. As a result, I am hesitant to engage professionally with individuals associated with an organization that seemingly tolerates questionable ethical behavior among its members
