The Army Museum of Tasmania (formerly known as the Military Museum of Tasmania) is located within Anglesea Barracks in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. Anglesea Barracks, constructed in 1814. The Barracks is included on the Commonwealth Heritage List. The museum is located in the military gaol which was built in 1847. The building has undergone few changes from when it was built despite its multiple uses, including as a girls reformatory, a married quarter, a store and offices. Displays include items from the colonial period when the British Army occupied the barracks to the current operational deployments with a focus on Tasmanian servicemen and women within the Australian Defence Force. The Museum is staffed by Army Reserve personnel and a dedicated band of volunteers who work hard behind the scenes to maintain the collection. The Museum is supported through the Australian Army History Unit in the Department of Defence and by the Military Heritage Foundation of Tasmania, a non-profit organisation that undertake fundraising for the Museum. The Army Museum of Tasmania is periodically looking for volunteers and can offer a variety of work options in the museum as outlined below, Cataloguing and Collection Identification and provenance Conservation and maintenance Display Preparation & Maintenance Preparation of Educational Materials Photography Publishing Research Restoration & Repair Tour Guide Training & Development Currently our volunteer staff include veterans, retired trades people, a dentist, police officers, paramedics, engineers, nurses to name but a few of their previous occupations. Neither age or lack of previous military experience is a barrier to becoming a museum volunteer. We are looking for people who can provide hours on any day of the week (by arrangement) and work in a team. The Museum also provides training opportunities that may include inter and intra state travel to enhance specific museum related skills. A uniform is also provided.

We got to the gate half an hour before closing but Brett was very friendly and welcoming, and let us have a look around anyway. We really appreciated the hospitality and had a great chat with him about Anglesea Barracks and the history of the building the museum is in. The museum itself is worth the look as a lot of care has been put into the set up. My favourite was the cabinet of Trench art and souvenirs!! Very glad that we got the recommendation to have a wander around the grounds because the small memorial area was gorgeous and impactful. The sculpture is especially beautiful and we spent some time admiring it. Really great experience!!

Had a spare hour on a Saturday afternoon and decided to drop in to the Army Museum of Tasmania at Anglesea Barracks in Hobart. For any history buffs this is a must. The displays are spread out throughout the individual cells inside the old military jail. It is all tastefully done and each cell holds a display of the different time periods for military operations for colonial troops in the 1800's, Tasmania militia and Australian forces deployed overseas. All this sits inside Anglesea Barracks which are the oldest military barracks in Australia. The hold place "reeks" of history. Must do.

Very interesting and informative Museum. The tour of the military facility was fantastic. Steve and John were extremely knowledgeable and it is a must see if you have a military or Tasmanian history interest. Thoroughly enjoyed the day and highly recommend.

$5 entry. Excellent exhibits throughout the gaol in cells and offices. Volunteer (Peter) was wonderfully knowledgeable about the building and the whole barracks history. Fascinating to walk among the historic barrack buildings (still operating) afterwards.

This place was one of my favourites. It's the oldest working barracks in Australia and has a full museum on both of the wars and history of Australia that they don't teach in school. All of the staff were amazing and very helpful.

  • David Wright

It is a small museum, but it has a good amount of information and that information is well presented. Being an American, it was interesting to get a different perspective about the conflicts that Australia has been involved in.

  • Samuel Whittle

An excellent venue filled with history and memorabilia. Despite being a smaller museum run by volunteers the displays were of a high standard. Likewise the information that the staff were able to share was highly informative.
