@ArtGalleryofNSW, Sydney, is not just a gallery, but a sensory haven that brings art to life in the most immersive ways. My journey through its corridors was an experience I won't easily forget: Perfectly situated near the Royal Botanic Garden, the gallery stands as an architectural masterpiece in itself. Its expansive design guarantees visitors a serene and unhurried experience as they immerse themselves in art. One of the standout experiences for me has been the "Art After Hours" sessions. These evening events, filled with workshops and concerts, resonate with creativity. The acoustics are phenomenal, ensuring that the music wafts perfectly through all the galleries, making art viewing a multisensory treat. The gallery's commitment to making art approachable is evident in its participatory exhibitions. Some even allow for tactile interactions, ensuring every visitor gets a personalized touch to their experience. A nod of appreciation to the dedicated student staff is necessary. Their friendly demeanor and readiness to assist transformed my visit into a seamless journey of discovery. The free guided tours provided are a boon, especially for those keen on a deeper understanding of the artworks and their history. Each guide brings a unique perspective, adding layers to the interpretation of the exhibits. The Members Lounge deserves a special mention. Its welcoming ambiance provides a tranquil oasis for members to relax, reflect, and refresh during their visit. The fact that there's no entrance fee exemplifies the gallery's commitment to community enrichment and fostering a love for art among a broader audience. Inclusivity is at the heart of the gallery's operations. With thoughtful accessibility features, they ensure that art is accessible to everyone, irrespective of their needs. To round off a perfect day, the in-house shop stands ready to offer beautiful mementos, ensuring that a piece of the gallery stays with visitors long after they've left. It has two buildings, both Of them are free.

Visited the new North Building of the #AGNSW today. First stop after a long drive is for a quick cuppa at the outside kiosk. Dad and I had these yummy pastry treats that were like a Cronut with vanilla cream inside. Delicious! It's lovely and open and spacious, yet at the same time, to me, I felt like I was in a cave. Weird! Lots of things to look at. Some of my favourites were the giant mouldy lemon, the beautifully crafted woven baskets, Torres Strait artist had made all these amazing woven pieces with feathers and materials. So much to look at. Some I just didn't get, and others were beautiful. One of the quite moving pieces was the display of glass drops hanging from the suspended grid. It's about the tests at Maralinga and the effect it had on those in the area. There's also an interactive area where you get to add to the display by rolling a ball of clay. It's a meditative practice. If you are after some very interesting meal choices, then visit Mod. Dining. I had the roasted root vegetable salad with chick peas. Yummy and filling. While you sit in the dining area, there are either the outside views to ponder or a giant screen with computer generated footage. The underwater one was my favourite.

I visited the Art Gallery of New South Wales recently, and it was an outstanding experience. One of the highlights was the free entry, which made it accessible to everyone. What impressed me even more was the absence of long queues during my visit, allowing me to explore the gallery without any hassle. Inside, I found a treasure trove of historical paintings and sculptures. The collection was truly remarkable, featuring works that spanned various artistic movements and time periods. It was a journey through art history, from classic masterpieces to contemporary creations. The diversity of the artworks on display made this gallery a very interesting place to visit. Whether you're an art enthusiast or just looking for a culturally enriching experience, the Art Gallery of New South Wales has something for everyone. I would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Sydney, as it offers a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the world of art, and the fact that it's free is a wonderful bonus.

I haven't been able to visit the old gallery since the new building opened next door. This time, however, is a facilitating trip down memory lane. The classic showpiece has been reorganised into showrooms by topics rather than periods, which is a refreshing way of seeing the art from a different perspective. It took me an entire Friday afternoon to appreciate the showpieces, and I didn't have enough time to go through the other showroom. I have to say that this gallery requires at least 3 days to view all. Update @ 3 August. They were changed to 3 stars. Unfortunately, for this second visit, 2 weeks after the previous visit, due to the unfair treatment from this somewhat unprofessional security team, I was told to clock my backpack. At the same time, most other visitors could go through the show with their backpacks, in addition to multiple other minor discrimination events that I have experienced. I must say I am not returning to this gallery anytime soon.

I just wanted to congratulate the Art Gallery of NSW for its tremendous membership program. Last night a dear friend took me to see the Kandinsky exhibition, which was inspiring, and we popped into the member's lounge for a quick vino before hand. I was highly impressed with the staff there. In particular, Cathy on reception was charming, well-informed, and helpful. While Boris, behind the bar, was an absolute delight. If these two people represent the calibre of staff the gallery attracts then it must be a wonderful place to work indeed. And I would recommend anyone who attends a lot of exhibitions there seriously consider the membership program as the lounge added another dimension to the whole experience.

The exhibitions were wonderful but The Gallery Café offered a couple of unexpected surprises. There’s the option to eat either inside or out. Indoor eating is an experience shared with some of Sydney’s local pigeons (The Feral Pigeon or Rock Dove—Columba livia), who graze on crumbs that fall from diners’ tables. While eating al fresco, gallery guests will have to elbow a table from the territorial Australian White Ibis (Threskiornis moluccus) whose home territory was once restricted to the bins of Hyde Park. While the staff here are vigilant against the avian interlopers, the birds themselves are proficient evaders, & soon return to deposit their precious guano on an unsuspecting customer’s table. It’s a wildlife experience that will delight people of all ages!

Accessible for the public, good places for anyone who wants to know about history and art. You may get some inspiration and insight from it. They got two buildings and an excessive exhibition with a vast range of themes. Spent 3-4 hours if you only select a few artworks to have a detailed look at. The information is detailed about each artwork, the artist, and the history or possible meanings behind the creation. Got cafes inside each building, which allow you to get refreshments and rest yourself. Seats are available around the whole gallery, which is nice. Impressed by galleries related to Aboriginal people and LGBT+, one with artworks created by high school students during Covid-19. I went when Wednesday since they will have longed opening hours.

Sydney Modern museum offers a captivating journey through a diverse collection of beautifully curated artworks. From contemporary masterpieces to thought-provoking installations, the range of exhibits is truly impressive. The museum itself is aesthetically pleasing, with its sleek design and inviting spaces that enhance the viewing experience. Additionally, the gift shop is a treasure trove of delights, offering a wide selection of art-related goodies that make for perfect souvenirs. Whether you are an art enthusiast or simply appreciate beauty, Sydney Modern is a must-visit destination that promises an enriching and visually stunning experience.

I was overwhelmed with the amount of art. I went to the South building. I couldn't find the North building. I was pleasantly happy to have free entry and free cloaking. There were multiple galleries with different types/themes of art. My favorite was the aboriginal and art by LGBTQ+ artists. I was not prepared with the amount of time necessary to view all of the museum. I advise at least 2 - 3 hours. Actually, you could go every day for an hour for several weeks to truly appreciate the art.

Very unassuming building that doesn't have a hero presentation but rather a sequence of spaces and thresholds integrated with the landscape. Very enjoyable to meander around the grounds and gallery exhibits for FREE. They have been exceptionally concious to present aboriginal arts and culture at the forefront theme throughout their murals, sculptures, animations and interactive pieces. The best installation at the time of my visit is the one we get to play with clay. Long queues at times and definitely the highlight for the young ones and the young at heart.

  • Emilija Lozenicins

The building itself is interesting, with a very modern interior and old exterior. The receptionist was lovely and helpful, all the staff were really kind and welcoming. The art was amazing! The collections were large and interesting compared to other galleries in Australia. The spaces were well laid out and there was a range so that everyone would find something interesting. The cafe also had good options and was decently priced. Ordering online directly to your table is simple and easy. I was surprised how well functioning the whole museum was.

Stunning buildings inside and outside, masterfully curated collections that span many genres and cultures. Aboriginal art in North Gallery among very best contemporary art I've seen anywhere. Spent 6 hours there today and it wasn't enough. Superb, free guided tours. Congratulations to everyone involved in putting this together. I doubt there is a better, more engaging and more beautifully displayed public collection of art anywhere in the world today.

Came here to see the Archibald exhibition $25 for an adult. At 12 & 2pm there was a physical audio tour. They have a new building next door, so now there is the north and south buildings. The cloak room is great. There is a tap to donate $5 on the counter. The cafe was underwhelming with the savoury dishes not good value, the hummingbird cake was tasty though. One of the best features are all gender toilets. See photos. I would visit again.

A beautiful addition to the art gallery, entry is free of charge, and the gallery is very tastefully laid out. There are plenty of food options, and there are public toilets on site. The artwork is of varying quality but is all quite unique and interesting. Accessibility is very good with elevators available and wide dooways. There are staff on hand to help and to answer questions. Highly recommended.

During my recent visit to the NSW Art Gallery, I was completely enchanted by the experience. The displays were incredibly diverse and truly captivated my imagination. From the awe-inspiring works of established artists to the innovative pieces from emerging artists, the artistry on display was truly impressive. Even the architecture of the gallery added a unique charm to the whole experience. If you have an appreciation for art and design, this gallery is an absolute must-visit.

Attended the Archie Party and was blown away by the event. Food stalls from popular vendors (Messina, Fishbowl etc) live performances and art on display for the Archibald Prize. Beautiful architecture both inside and out of the gallery and amazing artwork from talented Australian artists. Don't miss any event at the Art Gallery of NSW, check the website for future ticketed events.

I recently photographed a wonderful wedding at the Art Gallery of New South Wales and it was awesome. We were able to walk through the art gallery after hours and do some wedding photos of the couple. It was closed to the public so we had the place to ourselves which was great. The wedding reception took place in the restaurant which was modern and sophisticated. Overall it was a wonderful wedding and a great experience.

  • Priscilla Jacob

The new building is absolutely sensational and the exhibitions are amazing. The architecture really speaks for itself and provides a futuristic yet cosy style. The navigation was somewhat tricky but there were plenty of staff to assist along the way. The gift shop has some nice bits. Most exhibits are access friendly except for one. Very much enjoyed the time we spent here. Great addition to the main Gallery

  • Harold Josman

The Architecture is almost as amazing as the artworks! There is something for all ages, young and old with an interactive exhibition and a range of Modern Art for all to enjoy. Various exhibitions, art workshops, coffee shops, and restaurants can make your visit for 1hr or 4hrs all worthwhile. Check the website to see what's on. Staff are friendly and helpful. Definitely a must see in the Sydney CBD.

Always a treat going to this gallery. Really enjoyed viewing the Archibald's, Sulman and Wynn finalists. It would be appreciated if the tour guide leader could possibly lower their voice. I understand that they are enthusiastic but l would like to just view the paintings in peace and quiet. I did try and go to other areas...... but they seemed to be always in the same room eventually.

Art Gallery of New South Wales, founded as the New South Wales Academy of Art in 1872 and known as the National Art Gallery of New South Wales between 1883 and 1958, is located in The Domain, Sydney, Australia. It is the most important public gallery in Sydney and one of the largest in Australia!

After a five decade gap between visits, it was encouraging to see the indigenous art collections enjoying the somewhat more increased sensitivity to not "othering" or "paternalism" towards Aboriginal culture, but saddened by the evocative pieces on deaths in custody, and Maralinga.

Beautifully designed new building. The area is spacious and lots of artistic and coffee corners to sit down and enjoy the art. The top level is beautifully filled with panoramic view of the harbour and lots of seating. High speed wifi available inside the building too so quite helpful.

Very beautiful gallery and free!! There are escalators and a lift to help you get around the several floors. Little confused by the order of the artwork, seemed to jump theme a lot (or maybe I misinterpreted!!) but otherwise a nice experience. Cafe / restaurant available.
