The Art Gallery of South Australia (AGSA), established as the National Gallery of South Australia in 1881, is located in Adelaide. It is the most significant visual arts museum in the Australian state of South Australia. It has a collection of almost 45,000 works of art, making it the second largest state art collection in Australia (after the National Gallery of Victoria). As part of North Terrace cultural precinct, the gallery is flanked by the South Australian Museum to the west and the University of Adelaide to the east. As well as its permanent collection, which is especially renowned for its collection of Australian art, AGSA hosts the annual Festival of Contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art known as Tarnanthi, displays a number of visiting exhibitions each year and also contributes travelling exhibitions to regional galleries. European (including British), Asian and North American art are also well represented in its collections.

Well worth a visit!! An art gallery in any major city is likely to impress an art enthusiast. But this gallery surpassed my expectations. The layout is excellent, visitor friendly, and I found it easy to navigate. Art collections are well coordinated and curated. I was particularly impressed with the William Morris exhibition, and the Japanese art collection. As a Morris fan this is one of the best compilations of his and other Pre-Raphaelite artists' works. I usually find art gallery bookshops expensive and disappointing, however, the Art Gallery of South Australia store presented a great range of books and merchandise that present as good value.

This was my first experience at an art gallery All my life, I've seen them in movies and documentaries I m a complete philistine when it comes to art, i don't understand it much but i respect it We should have that view about other things in life too Anyways, the entrance is free, all is required is your time and patience. You'll be immersed in a world of uncharted waters, try to swim across it's depth with an open mind From the local artists to experts from other parts of the world, from the contemporary to time long past.. It was a beautiful experience, i went in as me and came out as a much refined version of me

Since 1900 Art Gallery of South Australia has housed some of the best paintings ️ photographs and other curios. They have so many different exhibitions from time to time. I really enjoy their first Fridays. On first Fridays they offer curated programme of live music, talks and tours. It’s free. Can grab something to eat from the cafe and a coffee or a glass of wine some events are ticketed events. Better buy the tickets to those ticketed events prior to arriving at the venue.

A great place with great masterpieces. It’s free to access. They have guided tours happening at 3 different times during the day. It wasn’t crowded, but the place wasn’t deserted too. The art gallery has a cafeteria too. From art to ornaments to biological concepts to aboriginal art, this place displays a great collection even with origins from other countries. I would say it takes atleast about an hour to properly cover the place. It’s quite big. No parking since it’s in the heart of the city. You have to park somewhere else and get here.

I would recommend to visit this place because you can see a lot of historical things, art, remaining. This exhibition is a must see. The young artists have rallied and performed some magic. Very colourful and bold, most of the work in this exhibition will impress you. We look forward to some of joining the RSASA and impressing us for many years to come. Some of The exhibition is free and opens someday with nibbles and wine before the awards are presented. RSASA has a new exhibition every month - grab the calendar from the front desk.

Service: Definitely worth going when you visit or live in Adelaide. I’ve been here twice. The second time was to see the Frida Kahlo exhibition. It was amazing. Price: Most of the art exhibitions are free and only their special collections that you need to pay. Transportation: You can use the free transport which is the tram stop at Art Gallery/Museum or use the 99C or 98C free bus city loop and stop at G1 north side.

Cultured, tasteful, pleasant, exciting. These words for me sum up the Art Gallery of SA. I visit here twice a year, and they seem to update their walls frequently, so there is always new exhibits for you to see. It’s family friendly and has areas where children can sit and draw or play. It’s has elements of a museum, depicting the varied history of this state. They also have an extensive modern art section, so there great scope in what’s on display. I highly recommend you come by and check it out.

  • Emma Bray

The Art Gallery is free to visit, but you need to pay for special visiting exhibitions such as the Frida and Diego one I went to see. They have some amazing aboriginal art there and a mixture of more modern art and more traditional art. It doesn't have any of the more famous artworks like the impressionist works at the Musee D'Orsay and the National gallery in England, but it is a lovely place to visit and has a delicious cafe on site.

Wonderful collection of art was nicely displayed and convenient to walk through The tour guides were very thorough, However whilst I understand this is not a museum rather a gallery but it would be nice to see a public entry exhibition every now and then  Just to help showcase the unique art community We have here in South Australia.

The museum itself was beyond my expectations. There were many precious artworks from all over the world. From Rodin to Yayomi Kusama and Australian artists. Minimum 3 hours are needed to check each piece. There is also currently Andy Warhol exhibition until May. I skipped it as I saw Warhol’s artworks a few times in different countries but it should be visited if you are yet to see the Warhol’s world .

The Frida and Diego exhibition was so beautifully put together, and it was incredible seeing her art up close! The recreations of her clothing was a nice touch. And there was a live band performing when we went. Amazing exhibition! And the gallery is always beautifully maintained and with lovely, helpful staff.

I feel like I will never get bored of coming here. Sure it’s not as big as other cities, but the building in itself is art! Such a stunning place, and a wonderful collection and variety of art. I’ve been here many times and will continue to visit every now and then :)

The most outstanding collection of Australian impressionist artwork and surprisingly incredible level of European and Japanese art also present. Totally defied my expectations. Staff up front were eager and helpful, and a polite guard explained the story behind one of my fathers favourite paintings.

I felt like a 65 year old with red frame reading glasses when I had this delicious pumpkin soup with sourdough on a slightly chilled autumns day today. The South Australian art gallery is world class in its offerings and the management is exceptional. I come here all the time and love it.

  • Paul Hallgarth

This is a wonderful gallery to spend time in. It contains a most comprehensive collection of both Australian and European art. It also has some interesting items of furniture and other art objects which combines well with the paintings.
