Ik heb altijd met plezier mijn boeken voor studie en eigen interesses gekocht bij Athenaeum maar ben nu toch wel teleurgesteld in de klantenservice. Na bijna een maand te hebben gewacht op een bestelling voor mijn studie (kan natuurlijk gebeuren ivm Covid/Brexit) zag ik opeens het geld teruggestort op mijn rekening. Toen besloot ik toch maar even verhaal te halen en kreeg ik te horen dat een paar dagen na mijn bestelling al een mail naar mij was gestuurd waarin werd gezegd dat het boek waarschijnlijk niet meer leverbaar is en of ik het dan maar wilde annuleren. Deze mail heb ik nooit gezien, wat ik wel vreemd vind omdat ik alle andere mails wel heb gekregen, maar goed dat soort dingen kunnen soms gebeuren. Irritanter is alleen wel dat wanneer ik na twee weken belde om te vragen of het nog veel langer ging duren mij niks verteld is over deze mail en het feit dat men nog op een reactie van mij zat te wachten. Dat ik dan nu ook een nonchalante medewerker aan de telefoon krijg die niet lijkt in te zien dat dit voor mij toch wel erg irritant is geeft me het gevoel dat Athenaeum mijn tijd en klandizie niet erg serieus neemt. Jammer!

Hands down, the best book store in the entire country. It feels like a maze, but in a good way. Going up or down a staircase or to one of the rooms in the back feels like an experience I never had before in a book store. Every time I come here, it is a journey in and of itself. Browsing the different floors and rooms, the staff is there to help you if you want. The only slight problem, is whenever I'm here, I always leave with more than I planned to do. Ordering online through the website and picking it up in the store itself is also quite nice, and the orders go through very fast. I ordered on Monday morning, and I picked it up in the afternoon. Thanks to all the staff here for making every and all visits to the store definitely worth it! :)

Fenomenaal! Majestueuze gebouw.... kloeke kasten... ze hebben echt álles!! Ik ben er slechts tweemaal geweest maar kan met zekerheid zeggen dat de mooiste boekhandel is in heel Nederland! Boekendiversiteit is markant. Van Loeb-edities tot Penguins, Russische Bibliotheek en zelfs Pléiade-uitgaven (tot mijn grote verbazing) Daarnaast hebben ze een héérlijk terrasje om te genieten van een net aangeschafte boekje rustig op het Spui. Wat wil men nog meer? Kortom, klantvriendelijkheid is uitstekend en door die enorme diversiteit aan boeken loopt men nooit zonder een boekje de deur uit. Studentenkorting hebben ze ook!

TIP ! Aarzel niet bij deze boekhandel te vragen naar een boektitel waarnaar je al misschien al jaren op zoek was! Vriendelijke medewerkers en kundig. Duizenden boeken over de verschillende afdelingen. Ook buitenlandse boekuitgaven. In het digitale tijdperk is het een genoegen om op zoek te gaan in deze boekwinkel naar dat boek wat je altijd wilde aanschaffen. Een excursie en ontdekkingsreis op zich zelf!

I am so impressed by the employees of this bookstore. When my books got stuck in US customs they worked hard to unravel the bureaucratic red tape and went out of their way to make sure I received my books. As you can imagine, this took patience, so much perseverance, kindness, and intelligence. It's nice that such a wonderful bookstore has such wonderful people working there.

This is my “go to” bookstore when I visit Amsterdam and am in need of something interesting to read. The added benefit is its location right in Spui so you have many bakeries, bars and restaurants where you can then go to read your book. The staff is friendly and very helpful if you are looking for something in particular. Stop in and see what you think.

We already knew that Spui area is a book stores area, but we didn't expect to have Athenaeum just next to The American Book Center. It was so convenient! Athenaeum carries a huge selection of books as well, and the people here are very friendly and helpful to find me the book that I was looking for. Definitely will be back on next trip.

Whenever I want to buy books I'll wait until we go to Amsterdam, which is an hour's drive, so I can buy them here because I love everything about this bookshop. The staff, so friendly and they know everything, the building, great atmosphere. It has got everything a good bookshop should have.

Een van de beste zaken in Amsterdam. Koop je boeken via de boekhandel. Een bezoek aan een goede boekwinkel is een voedzaam uitje en je bestelde boek is er net zo snel als via internet. En dan verdient de mooie boekwinkel geld om te kunnen blijven bestaan, en niet een internetmiljardair.

My friend actually reserved a copy of a magazine all the way from South America, and the owners were so nice and responsive, they reserved the copy for me to pick it up at the location and gift wrapped it for me. Lovely people and great selection of international magazines too !

Fijne winkel. Groot aanbod. Je kan hier ook koffie drinken. Ze hebben een klein hoekje strips wat ik zelf wel fijn vind. Het zijn stads prijzen, gemiddeld een klein beetje hoger dan andere zaken, het zal niet veel schelen. Het personeel wat ik sprak was vriendelijk.
