Booked for 2 days, ended up staying for a month..and then another 2! Any time I'm in S.A. a stop here is a must, and any time I'm in Durban, this is my choice. Cathy is the perfect mix of the mother you'd want and a great host who can keep the vibe up yet maintaining the place chilled and safe. She and talented Jessi made an absolute stunning work with their creative art and no corner has been ignored. From the jungle- like dorms to the cosy African honey moon rooms, there's anything you may dream of for your Durban stop, including all the comforts: wifi, lockers, curtains for privacy, plug points and lights for each bed. Dean is there for literally anything you need, any time, always ready to help with his great heart and his genuine smile. Auntie's food is honestly the best Indian food you'll eat in S.A. yet so incredibly convenient. Bobby is the official braai master, with his loyal braai master assistant Milo. He's also a professional horserider and animal lover, should you want to arrange eco safaris on horseback. Nick's humour and Peter's sarcasm will give you just the right spices for your nights, Brian's talent with plants brings you a beautiful, magic garden to wander around, and a herbs & veggie patch to enjoy, James makes sure security is tight, so you can forget about the problems of the outside world, Kobus is the trusted repair consultant and problem solver, Caro is such a beautiful soul and all the cleaning team works extra hard to make sure the place is neat. The pool is kept well clean as well, and it's perfect for those hot summer days. The kitchen is large and spotless clean, with plenty tools to get creative. Italian cook approved! All the dogs and Rhona the cat are the friendliest most adorable cuties, with Marley being the undisputed lifeguard and Noodle the monkey guard. Bbq area, living room with comfy sofas, TV, dvds, Netflix and board games, but all you're really want to do is probably hanging around those beautiful souls of the Aweh tribe in the garden or in the patio. Cherry on top: the tree of life in front of the terrace, that frames the stunning view on Durban and hosts such an abudance of wildlife, including wild vervet monkeys, birds, butterflies and more. Cons: you might lose time and not want to go back home. Soul place!

For a R550 private room booking to get a stinking place, untidy, old linen accomodation. This place is a mess. Very dirty. Smelling. Gates not working. The pics are misleading. No ways. It's condition is unacceptable. Kwa Zulu health inspectors should visit this place and close its doors. Cathy, this is very very disappointing, when you guys sent follow up emails to check if the guest is still coming, first check the condition of your accomodation. I should be getting a refund. I booked this for my brother who was coming from Johannesburg and visiting Durban for the first time. Appalling conditions which are health hazards. I'm so upset, had I known about these conditions I could have easily looked for a guest house or Airbnb. There are decent ones for that price you are charging. Absolutely disgusting

I have spent four years on the road now and this is one of my favorite hostels I have stayed at! The owners have made this place feel more like a home than a hostel and do whatever they can to make you feel comfortable. They told the guests whenever they were about to run an errand in case someone needed to grab something which is completely unnecessary but changes the dynamic of the host/guest relationship. They have a comfortable outdoor area as well as indoor area with a tv/DVD player. The kitchen has everything you need and the hostel is small enough that you will easily become friends with all of the guests if you wish. It very much felt like one big family including the owners. I will miss this place and go out of my way to stay here again. Thanks girls!

Girls you have a lovely place , I have read the reviews by some people who I believe have nothing better to do but to moan about things that are not true . I suggest you get hold of your lawyer and deal with them . I visit you regularly and I have never heard any guests complain in fact I only hear good things so these people who are trying to sabotage your business should get a life and grow up . if these stories were true why do people keep coming back to stay ? just doesn't make sense .I will definitely be referring people to you guys , well done you girls have done a great job keep it up , there isn't another back packers with such art work around its great .I love Aweh .

For the first in my life I tried something different when it comes to travelling. I usually book out a hotel or an AirBnb but I decided to try this one out It is located in a safe area. The staff was very helpful, welcoming and friendly. And they made sure I was comfortable during my entire stay. The rates per night are affordable It is a 10 bunk bed dormitory so you’ll be sharing with many others but it’s a great experience to avoid isolation and atleast make new friends. Thank you so much for hosting me. I enjoyed my stay. I would definitely recommend to someone willing to try something different from the hotel experience

Liked the area where this site is situated. We could view Moses Mabhida Stadium from our rooms. The service rendered was great too, with friendly staff members and other other guests... Thumbs up for large groups with a tight budget or those who are into self catering. Appreciated that you guys let our kids be kids! Mara lerata la bone shem Dankos

I spent 3 days last week at Aweh Africa Backpackers and found it to be friendly, welcoming and clean....affordable (if you want 10 star.. go and pay 10 times the price) everything available to use in the kitchen... bathrooms/showers and beds all great... beautiful swimming pool, TV, pool table... Japanese Garden in walking distance... God willing, I would love to return one day soon.

I had an amazing experience. The rooms, bathroom and kitchen were clean. The staff is friendly and go beyond expectations. Aweh Africa has a family vibe, I got along with everyone as if I've known them forever. The puppy they have is well mannered. I am most definitely referring my friends and family to this accommodation. Thank you for the superb hospitality.

Was very disappointed. We were supposed to be in a family room which was not the case. No bathroom onsuite as we expected. Room was smelly. Smelt like mould. Shoddy banged together furniture. Linen was disgusting. The smell of marijuana was potent. Too many paintings on the walls, making it way too busy. I will never go there again nor recommend it to anyone.

My home away from home. I love this place and the people that make it so special. From the first day I stayed here I felt comfortable and chilled, arrived as strangers and left as family. Thanks to each and every one of you for the amazing welcome and stay guys. You know who you all are. I'd recommend Aweh 11 out of 10 times...

One of the best backpackers I've been to in the country, Cathy, Dean and the family really make you feel at home. Everyone is very friendly and the view of the sea and moses mabida is amazing. Would definitely recommend this for anyone looking to backpack in Durban, definitely will be coming back.

In 2016,I met Cathy and Jess back in 2016 when I just moved from Uganda . They became my family as I lived with them for a year upto date... I'm successful today doing my boxing Passion because aweh Africa sponsored me for my professional boxing career here in durban north. Thanks to aweh Africa.

It's a very nice place, the owner is very sweet and accommodating, great vibe and everyone gets together on the weekend, makes you feel very comfortable and invited, there are darts pool table PlayStation and TV for guests, the themed rooms are particularly cool just lacks personal lockers

We loved our time at Aweh. Cathy and Jessie were more than accommodating, just wanting us to have the best time. Thank you for taking care of us (and my 82 year old mom)! We wish you all the best and may you go from strength to strength!!

Came in as a stranger , felt welcomed and at home with in an hour by the the people. The place and the atmosphere is the best. Learnt a lot from the dog pets they have on the property. The family vibes here are the best
