Went to sell some books I had acquired throughout the years. I didn’t expect much, and had read online they donate the books they won’t pay for anyway so I figured I’d give it a shot. Unfortunately I was mistaken, and they do not donate any books and instead have an incredibly harsh vetting process. I was greeted by a male staff member who began going through my books. He was condescending and judged each book painstakingly and loudly in front of other customers, even holding up the line in two occasions (also forcing them to to listen to the spectacle he was creating). The books were in fair condition but some had water damage, but instead of tactfully refusing the books, the employee made comments such as “this is basically a biohazard” and “we need Dostoyevsky so badly, and we’ve taken some pretty bad stuff, but not -this- bad.” The books were not “biohazards” and he even went to far as to say one was wet when that was not possible. After minutes of the public judgement of my allegedly horrifying books, I asked if we could continue the process in private due to the judgements. It was humiliating. I don’t care that he didn’t take the books, it was the tactless and condescending tone the employee used and the fact it was all done in front of multiple customers. I usually really enjoy this store, but the customer service was shocking and made a simple attempt to sell some books a publicly humiliating spectacle. I see in a few other reviews mentions of a rude male employee and I would suspect this is an ongoing issue in this location. What a shame.

What can I say about BMV at Eglinton? A great selection of books, many of which were purchased as remainders and are in new to mint condition for newer releases for a fraction of the cost at retail giant Indigo. I have a a ton in common with one member of the staff- we are both fine art and music buffs - and always makes for stimulating conversation. I have been frequenting so often and he knows exactly what I am seeking to purchase. My home library is extensive so many times, the classical music stock will be books I already own, but every now and then, I pick up a classic, or rare first edition. I know that if I tell him I will come in on a certain day to see new arrivals, he would not hesitate to put aside books he knows I will buy. It is these old customer practices that need to make a comeback. It makes customers feel appreciated and encourages loyalty. I am proud to be a regular customer. Fantastic spot to shop for any genre, and also carries CD's and Vinyl.

It was such a pleasure to browse the shelves of a well-curated print book store - a luxury seemingly taken for granted, not so long ago before the grip of digital publishing and online book selling and trading. If you like the smell of printed literature and the touch, weight, and sight of bound books, this is a place you'll love. You'll find a satisfying selection of everything from current releases, to the canon of Western literature, Philosophy, World Religions, and Psychology, plus a large selection of illustrated novels and more for the younger audiences as well. This BMV is also pleasantly easy on your pocketbook - with prices this good, any bibliophile will be hard-pressed not to walk out with a satchel full of impossible to resist purchases worthy of one's library. I look forward to my next visit - I suppose I'll need to build more bookshelves!

Only sell books here if you are extremely secure in your sense of self worth and are ready to be told that your books belong in a garbage can. I've had very hit or miss experiences with the front desk guys. It's totally fine to be matter of fact and say "I can give you 3 bucks for this" but you do not need to elaborate on what's wrong with the other books. I know full well that some of the books I brought in are old, the person who gave them to me has passed away so I know exactly how old they are. That's not being truthful, it's being hurtful and based on other reviews, it's losing them business. It would actually take less time to just buy what you need and keep your other opinions to yourself. It would be like a clothing store employee telling you you look like garbage in your garments. Seller beware ‍♀️

If you like books, and don't want to pay high prices, BMV is the place to be. They have plenty of selection of books of my interest, usually art, comics, biographies, and self help. 2 floors, first floor looks like your walking into a library of magic spells, with its high level book shelves and color scheme. 2nd floor, you can hear the creaks in the floor while you walk, and it gives you that retro feeling of coming into a room where the souls of the previous owners to these books are still here. All in all, if you're looking for a specific book, I highly recommend coming to this location if your in the area, staff are knowledgeable of what's in stock. Great prices!

I love this place, wandering through the aisles, picking from a wide assortment of books. Jazz playing in the air, getting lost in the day. I've been revisiting this haunt for decades and it's my preferred choice compared to the alternative, the big box behemoths. Nothing against them at all. But there is something about supporting the (rel) little guy. The experience here is far more personal (for me). Something about navigating the smaller aisles. Service is great. I've never had a problem. Selection is quite good. Of course they do not have the shelf space and you can't get it all here, but when I can, I do.

Love how they curate and display the books and that it is reuse culture. This shop is the opposite of book burning , this store and it's knowledgable staff saves civilization every day. I am a regular patron because I discover new books all the time from new to the historic authors and it's as peaceful as a library... It's pleasantly over stuffed with contents to make it at home on Diagon Alley. Thank you to the owners for making it so good. It would be my dream to work there and be paid in books! ♥️

I usually go here before checking out the indigo across the street. They have most of the books with really good prices. Some of the books are a bit pricy considering their quality but for the majority, their books are more affordable than other places. The new published books are also found there for a decent price which helps you save a couple of $$. As people mentioned you need to be patient with finding books and asking questions since it can take a while. They also buy your old paperback books.

  • Quan & Alina

This is probably my favourite BMV location - it's small and the staff is very friendly. I can imagine the store feeling crammed during busy hours, but if you go during their quieter hours, it's a nice, chill environment to browse for books. I've sold a few stacks of books here at the buy back counter and I got a fair amount of money back. Overall, good selection of books. One thing to note is that they have an upper floor and I'm not sure how wheelchair accessible this location is!

  • Greg Keane

I love this store, I've been buying books here and suggesting it to others since I moved to Y&E in the 90s. The selection is not as vast as the corporate monsters but ambiance is inviting and the staff are all knowledgeable and very friendly, like your library teacher who now sells books. I have gotten some great deals at this store. I recommend this place if you're sick of the too big, overly glossy stores. The only thing is I wish they had a online database of all their stock.

  • Sam Batterbury

Really feels like it's a part of the Yonge and Eglinton community. The staff is always incredibly kind and occasionally gives discounts, there's a great selection of books for a better price than the Indigo across the street, and generally has a really great vibe to the store. If you like reading, I'd recommend going here first before going to a big chain, 9 times out of 10 they have the book you're looking for and you get to support something more local!

  • Kosar Avini

I love this store. It's the best place for bookworms and movie nerds. It has enormous variety of second-hand books and movies. You can also find lots of new items that are sold much less than their original price. BMV also has many children books and games and puzzles. As well as adult board games and puzzles. I can easily spend 3 hours in this amazing store, and never get tired. People who work there... they are super nice and friendly.

  • Spencer

Extremely rude, arrogant, and disrespectful staff. Value may be found, but never negotiated or asked for. Run by childish men who belittle customers, seek confrontation, and exert dominance because they work there. I do not recommend selling anything here unless you want to get ripped off. If your shopping, save your time and energy asking the staff for any help or favours, unless you like being talked down to and disrespected.

  • JanePolarBear

The man who works at this location is rude, condescending and disrespectful. I was just wondering if the criteria for hiring are non-existing at this location. We saw him being rude to customers on several occasions, as if he owns the place and feels free to talk to you as he pleases. Isn’t it just common sense being nice to your customers when they’re being extremely nice to you? Would not be returning to this location.

  • Matthew Mc

Amazing prices and huge selection of books! The books cycle through often, so it makes book hunting a treat every time you come. The kids section is second to none in both prices and variety. Always check here before you go to indigo across the street. There’s also a really cool “rare” section here that you can find collectors books. I particularly like the Canadian author section in the back right corner.

  • Johan Creed

mediocre, decent at best. store has no unique flavor, the store is basically a discount Indigo, lots of bestsellers and common shelf books. They claim to have unique finds but even that is lacking. I asked afew questions last time I was here but the staff member I was dealing with was pretty uneducated about books. In all you might find something here but there are Much better bookshops around the city.

  • Fact Man

This place is truly incredible! Great collection of fiction& non-fiction, incredible prices. I drive 40-50 mins to visit at least once a month. Would like to see a bit more variety in history and military, but an overall a gem of a bookstore! I just wish they open a location in Newmarket area. I'd rather support them than spend twice the money on an average book in Chapters/Indigo.

  • Iris Xie

My absolute favorite place in the city! Chock full of cheap and amazing books with a surprisingly diverse range. Extremely cosy, the salespeople were very kind to suggest books and sections for us to look at. There's a new selection every week with displayed specials on a table running through the middle of the store. A fantastic must-visit on Yonge-Dundas

  • Philippe Rivet

Didn't find exactly what I was looking for going in, but left with different and even more interesting books The main reason I like going into independent bookstores is because unlike the big bluish purple chain where everything is indexed you have to put in more effort browsing, which on many occasions (including this one) yields unexpected delights

  • Mark Webster

This is one of my favorite places to visit in toronto. You can find excellent journals calendars and terrific novels for a great price. If you were interested in getting some sort of paper agenda that wasn't ridiculously overpriced this is the place. If you were interested in coffee table books or anthologies of large works of art this is the best place.

  • Hana

Great customer service. The employees are very kind and patient. They helped me find a series of books that I was looking for. They have a large variety of books and there’s something for everyone. If you’re looking to sell items to them don’t expect more than a few bucks. For two or three books you would usually get around 5-7 dollars.

  • M J

The fellow working at the Younge and Eglinton location on the aft. of Monday May 16, was fantastic! Helped me find the books in a jiffy, then gave me some really good info on using a gift card and helped me look for it when I had misplaced it, even though he was very busy, he was so supportive. What a great guy and location. Thanks!

  • Camila M

I've been buying books at BMV for a decade now and always bring my friends here when they want to buy books. The staff is always extremely knowledgeable and helpful. They have an extensive variety of all genres. From children, to history to manga. The condition of the books is always perfect and the prices are unbeatable.

  • Gary Kaustinen

Great selection of new and gently used books, CD's and DVD's. There's an upstairs too for children's books, entertainment, travel, history etc. Staff are knowledgeable and are great at making suggestions. Word to the wise, try not to chat up staff at the cash too long as they're really busy trying to get stuff done.

  • Alex Chow

Great place for affordable books! This location in particular has a good children's section upstairs. BMV is not the place to go to get specific books - they only carry what they carry - but there's a lot of gems here for a good marked down price. Some are 2nd hand, but a lot are brand new and are marked as such.

  • Matt Li

A large selection of books, comics and some other products such as notebooks, board games or movies. The staff was helpful in indicating where I could find certain titles. They also have a selection of vinyl records. Item selection can vary greatly. There is also a hand sanitizer station at the front.

  • phraseography

Two floors of new and used books, music, and movies. They also sell a variety of comics and manga. The books are well displayed and in easy to find topics/sections. The music is a vinyl and cd format. The movies are in DVD and Blu-ray. Everything is well priced, and you can usually find a good deal.

  • Lisa Hulley

Came here in a rush, was looking for a specific title (business book) and although the book wasn’t there, the employee helping me (Colin I think??? who was so kind and generous with his time) guided me to 3 other books I didn’t even know I needed. This is my new favourite bookstore!

  • Micky Z.

Always a great selection of fiction and novelty items. This is the best BMV location in Toronto. Classic small bookstore feel complete with creaking wood floors, friendly service, and fair prices makes this my go to bookshop (preferred over the big box across the street!).

  • Kriti Shah

I was just walking by and I decided to stop in. A great collection of books, music, and movies! Very well maintained and good pricing. I asked for some recommendations from Shawn (sorry if that's not how you spell it), he was very kind and he made some great suggestions!

  • Cindy R

Great staff great selections. Very attentive and detail oriented. Although one staff will sustain a conversation with me with indirect eye contact. But I guess that’s just quirk of one person. Much better than indigo across the street. I am tempted to buy so many books!

  • Venice

My favourite bookstore! They have a large collection. Love selling my old books for cash and buying more. There’s many secondhand books that are for sale for lower prices, usually $10. The more popular secondhand books are more though and the prices vary, usually $20+.

  • Karen L

BMV has so many levels filled with things like books, records, merch, etc. They carry new and used books for a fraction of the retail price in big box retailers. I love going here to find gems. You can truly get lost through all the sections. Highly recommend.

  • Marc Bactadan

Called this place on a Saturday and the person behind the phone as rude, I just wanted to sell my books and I had no idea what they were but I knew they costed something, and the person told me to just bring them to a value village. Horrible service man

  • Jonathan Davies

Best used book store ever. Lots of new titles, think of this store at the Top40 radio station of book stores. DVDs also. Well organized and the staff know the inventory well. Books are all in good or excellent condition. Board Games is a new addition.

  • Zara Arif

I always find good selection of books. The store is well organized. It may not be worth it to sell your own books here but convenient for the times you've to get rid of a lot of them and not go through the hassle of selling them on marketplace.

  • Pong Lenis

Great little book store; I’ve been shopping here for years. The staff is very friendly and helpful. They have a great selection and variety of books. They have great deals and discounts, I would highly recommend them to family and friends.

  • James A

Usually pretty good stuff at good prices here. Staff are friendly and helpful but you need to be patient as there is usually just one or two people working at the counter so help comes but it takes time. This isn’t Chapters or Indigo!

  • W. Steven Vincent

Terrific selection of used books and DVD's. Their prices are quite good and they give top dollar for new release DVD's especially Blu-ray and 4K HD. All the staff that I have dealt with are very knowledgeable, helpful and friendly.

  • David S.

More often then not, I usually find something I didn't know I wanted in the smallest of the BMV locations. Store is clean, stacked and busy, just as it should be. Got a great deal on a set of dvds. Love BMV. So say we all. …

  • Noah S

Budget friendly books and things! I've found plenty of hidden DVD gems here, not to mention a lovely collection of poetry books. Awesome vinyls and comics, my only concern is the lack of accessibility to get to the second floor!

  • Chris Luna

Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. Great selection of used/almost new/new books at reasonable prices. My go to book store in Toronto. Sure hope they don't close like so many others!!! Please keep supporting their business.

  • Christopher B

My favorite BMV! I love all the BMVs. I love going through and finding rare gems. And of course the savings. From fiction, memoirs to graphic novels they have it all! And always a helpful staff. …

  • Gonga Salvador

Always waiting 10m at the cash register for one of the associates to notice me so I can pay. Seems staff doesn't care, and place is always messy. Decent selection of books though and good prices.

  • Jay

Best deals in the city! I've recently started collecting certain books (rather not say, this place is a gold mine), and nothing beats their quality and prices. I just need to not go so often!

  • Rahul Yadav

The books are really cheap and in good condition but the guy that works there has no directory to navigate the books faster, you just have to browse and look. My overall experience was nice.

  • Evelyn Mang

Such a great bookstore! It looks small but has a phenomenal selection, especially in the literature section. The books I got were really cheap for being in such great/perfect condition

  • Keith Diaz

LOVE love love this place, and these photos were just from my very 1st time in there! They've got all kinds of books for your liking, and apparently an even bigger location on Bloor!

  • Sean McConnell

Great place for new and used books. Always had excellent service and support at their locations. Plenty of accessory, book, audio, and video finds if you take the time to browse.

  • R. Nguyen

Cozy smalll book store with great selections, and great discounted prices. Staff is helpful and friendly. Good place to build up my reading habits and improve my English :)

  • Ashlea J. Russell

This is an excellent secondhand book store. The books are in great condition and there is a wide variety. They also sell records, board games and some other collectables.

  • Patrick Daye (Phatriik)

Great store, great prices. Check places like this before buying a book from Amazon or Indigo!! Usually a better price available here in like new condition

  • Luis Andino

Good place to look for books, and at reasonable prices. Great variety and if you see something you like, take it, or you might not find it any other time.

Smaller than our usual Bloor street haunt, but met all our expectations with friendly, knowledgeable staff and a decent selection of books.
