Oh, where do I begin with my disastrous encounter at Big John's in Selly Oak? It was like stepping into a comedy sketch gone horribly wrong. Picture this: bagpipes blaring, kilts fluttering, and the unmistakable aroma of haggis lingering in the air. I thought I had stumbled into a Scottish festival, but nope, it was just Big John's attempt at authenticity. First off, let's talk about the food. I ordered their so-called "Scottish Special Burger," and boy, was it special indeed. The burger patty was so dry that even the Loch Ness Monster would have struggled to swallow it. And the toppings? Well, let's just say they were about as authentic as a fake Loch Ness Monster sighting. The "haggis" tasted suspiciously like a mushy mystery meat, and the tartar sauce had the audacity to call itself "Scottish Mayo." I've never seen mayo commit such a culinary crime. And finally, the service. I've never seen such a disorganised frenzy. The staff scurried around, bumping into each other like we were playing bummper carts back in the 80s and occasionally dropping trays of food like the london bombings. It was like watching a looney tunes comedy routine, except the joke was on the customers. My order was mixed up not once, not twice, but thrice BAH HUMBUG! At that point, I half-expected a bagpipe-playing clown to pop out and offer me a conpensation of three shillings and a £10 robux giftcard. In conclusion, if you're looking for a taste of Scotland, Big John's in Selly Oak is NOT the place to go. They've managed to turn a proud and vibrant culture into a warzone. So, if you're in the mood for a good laugh and an unforgettable dining experience (for all the wrong reasons), Big John's will definitely deliver. Just don't expect quality food or a true taste of Scotland. You've been warned!

Mushy Peas

I popped into Big Johns in Selly Oak on my way back from Birmingham. I live in Kingswinford. A lady took my order which was two fish and chip meals with mushy peas. I also ordered a side of chicken nuggets. Originally I was told that i would have to wait 8-10 minutes which I said was fine. However after 10 minutes the lady came over and said the chef at the back only made one fish instead of two so she was going to make two again so they are together. Therefore we had to wait another 10 minutes. She gave us our order and we live in Kingswinford so it took me 30 minutes to get home. When I got home and looked inside the order of chicken nuggets was missing and the lady gave me curry sauce instead of mushy peas. I rang head office customer service for a refund because I could not go back to Big Johns in Selly Oak and the nearest Big Johns to me is in West Bromwich which another 9 miles. I paid on card so I thought it would be no problem for them to refund me. They refused and told me to go to my nearseat store. I explained once again that it’s still very far and it’s not practical. They just did not care. I will be contacting the consumer ombudsman. I was so upset because of this especially when you purchase takeaway food and open when you get a shock at home. The most awful experience was the lack of care from Big Johns. I will never be going there again.

Having ordered pizza this evening, I then spent ten minutes waiting for the guy to start taking the order for my choice of toppings When he finally decided to work, he was nothing short of rude and ignorant I said I would take a refund and go elsewhere, to be curtly informed that I wasn't allowed a refund It took another couple of minutes to get my refund, but I think it was a better choice for them to refund me than to have the agro of not refunding in front of other customers I then went to pizza pepper, the establishment just 1 door to the right I selected my order, and paid just £1 more than I would have paid big John's The service was great The pizza was way better than the pizza I usually get in any big John's Tastier, and much much better dough If you want pizza, try pizza pepper, it's easy to find, it's right next door to big John's, which means if enough people get to see how good they are, maybe we can make big John's become little John's, cos they're appalling, unlike pizza pepper, whom after just 1 visit, will now be getting all my business when I'm in the area

Reasonably priced ,so thought we'd give it a try,even after reading some bad reviews,biggest mistake ever,basic food hygiene is not any kind of priority,the man put his hand with the same glove to put on the cheese,meat and onions/ mushrooms,talk about waiting for a bit of food poisoning with your pizza,being vegetarian I a asked him to change his glove,he actually went into another shop to fetch one,how long had he had that glove on !!.on a order of 2 pizza's one was made and cooked before the other was even made,will NEVER use this shop again,needs a good manager to put food hygiene in place and incurage the staff to have a bit more about them than zombie's,it's only got 1 star because I had to,else it would have got nothing,the chips are also cooked with the chicken by the smell and taste and the chicken wings tasted and looked hours old,my advice AVOID unless basic food hygiene,manners and taste don't matter.

Food here is good, but the wait time is sometimes insane. I made a small order of fish and chips, another chips and a veggie burger. If I'd kept it to just the first two, it probably wouldn't have been the ordeal that it was. I watched as 6 staff members fumbled around for 25 minutes. It wasn't busy at all, so I fail to see what the excuse could be. And because it took so long, I got caught in a downpour that I would have missed had they been on the ball. My suggestion, if you want your food in a reasonable time, stick to the basics (pizza, fish, chips) because you could be in for a long wait if you order anything else.

I confronted the manager of the selky oak branch to say if ordered on thier website cheese & tomatoe pizza 12" with boneless chicken with dip and chips and drink its more on the website with free. Sorry none free delivery online it's will be nearly £19.00. But 12 " cheese &tomatoes pizza, boneless (no wait it's not boneless) chicken and chips, dip and Pepsi at the restaurant in person it's £17.27. Oh wait it cost me at the branch £18.28 for what I ordered RIP OFF PEOPLE!!!! Nothing to recommend sorry unless you have drunk too much alcohol. Got to a near by chippy or Chinese it's way cheaper than big John's

Big John's is basically dead. Nothing to do with this particular breach it's more about the whole franchise. I used to love big John's but the quality of food and service has gone really down, things like they won't put chilli and mayo on your chips, they reheat the nan breads instead of making fresh ones, almost anything they can do to get that extra £££ out of you, in my opinion it goes against there slogan "NEIGHBOURHOOD TAKEAWAY" in my eyes they don't really care about being a traditional takeaway anymore and are concentrating on becoming a massive franchise.

Went in to find the big John but got to know they serve food. Quite tasty things. Didn't get a chance to meet Big J but other people were quite nice. And they serve food so fast didn't even had the chance to look around. I was just trying to peep inside and bam there is your order sir! We've been ordering from here for years but recently it's gone down hill. My partner and I have always ordered a half half pizza, but last weekend we were informed that the new policy is that you can only have a maximum of 4 toppings in total....we wanted 4 different toppings on each half of the pizza but apparently this is not possible any more due to new policy....so we ended up having 2 toppings each....how ridiculas. We shall not be getting food from there any more. The state of the place is going downhill too, freezing uncomfortable unfriendly place.

Disgusting food. Pizza made with mouldy cheese and had to argue my point with manager Ali, to even get half of my money back. Although 6 of us were eating the pizza. We noticed that it tasted mouldy. So will have to complain to the customer relations to get a full refund. Terrible customer services. Instead if dealing with me, he decided to tell me to ring the store and there was no answer. Ended up calling Soho road; who were really busy, but apologetic for my experience. I will never eat here again and will advise others to do the same.

Haven't been to a Big John's for a few years now and first thing I noticed were that the prices had now doubled! I still thought I should give it a go and for 2 burger meals @ £10, I would expect fresh, tasty delights but in reality it was a great fright! Chips were hard and the little bit of potato they had in them tasted a week old! The chicken was extremely dry and worried that it would get stuck in my throat. The beef burger is not beef but lamb! What a great and utter shame, and definitely £10 down the drain.

It's ok for a quick bite to eat, when we order and got home it was wrong we ask for a steak and kidney pie and chips and gave us a burger and chips the chips were dry and horrible and the burger was really spicy and burnt your mouth off!! In future I won't be ordering from there again

We go every other week for chicken and its always been great. But, a really big BUT .......... Last visit last week drove me to absolute madness, I consider myself a patient man but being grunted at, ignored and generally treated like I had arrived on the bottom of a shoe was infuriating. I have given 2 stars but purely because the food after a 25 minute wait for 2 pieces of chicken was fine. I know it isnt exactly fine dinning but fast food no, friendly food no. So really JUST FOOD

Ordered 4 meals together. Got home and not one thing was right. Paid over the odds and got a few scraps of chips. They put hot chilli sauce ona kebab for a child that we asked for tomato sauce on. Also had an allergic reaction to peanuts which must have been in the oil. Called customer services who said call back after 11pm. This was 9.30pm. Told her the problem that I was having a reaction and she said thank you and call back later. Used to be nice but absolutely disgusting now!!!

Suprised to see the reviews that came up about this place. The food was priced more than fairly. And the quality of the food was brilliant, we ordered a mix of burgers, chips and pizza and everything came hot, fast and fresh! The driver Waqas was really pleasant, told us exactly where he was parked (since we're an office with no place to stop) found him easily. We'll definitely be ordering here again. Recommend you try it too!

Donnor burgers came cold , meat was dry like it had been from the night before was absolutely vile. Dryest burger I've ever had in my life hardly any salad on it one peice of tomato and tiny bit of cucumber hardly any chilli or mayo , for the price I was disgusted how small there portions are.

I would give it a zero if it was possible, terrible delivery service. Over an hour I waited and waited and waited Me being pregnant and having to go outside walk around after being told the food had been delivered when it hadn’t, I’m very disappointed. My phone calls were constantly ignored and when I finally got through I was left on hold and hung up on. I will NEVER, EVER, order from this unorganised establishment again.

All looked very clean, the Staff were pleasant. Had a doner burger. The the bun was well toasted, the salad looked fresh and the sauces were very nice. Only taken one star off as the doner meat was pretty dry. I do understand I came late at night, after work though.

Never again !! Today I went to big johns I placed on order I was just watching the guy in the back who was making the burgers everything he was making is reheating the cheese burgers and passing them to the front to give out to customers he was not even wearing gloves when handling salad. Chicken wings taste like it was from yesterday it was not fresh at all.

Order spicy wings meal, said the price was the single 2.79. So I asked to make it a meal and the man said "but it already comes with chips, unless you want a drink I can charge for that." Reconfirmed again that this is the price for a meal. Left and realized this man only gave me chips and nothing else. Unbelievably horrible experience. Do not recommend.

Big John's has become a lot more expensive, you used to be able to get good meal deals for around £2 I understand prices need to increase but now it's £7.00+ for a burger meal, you're a fast food chain not a restaurant

Not really sure what to rate this store. Sometimes you go and the food is really nice and fresh then sometimes, it is really stale as if it has been reheated. The pizzas are always fresh and always have a good amount of toppings bit the sfc is hit and miss, I tend to go during the busier times as it is fresher. Something to keep in mind I suppose.

The food is really good - when they give you what you order. There has been 4 occasions since the start of September when they've gotten our order wrong, and it's very confusing as to why this keeps happening. Their jalapeno bites are incredible but if you order them it's a mystery as to whether you'll actually get them or some other random side.

Ignorant staff. Food that has been sitting there for hours. Over priced. Dirty. This place is so bad you would not believe it. If I did not know better I would share everyone in here is a none English speaking ISIS recruite. Whatever they are here for it certainly is not to be pleasant or serve good food. It does not change. Why do I come here?

Some years ago I used to have donner meat wraps and chicken wraps very delicious Mashallah, there's one in Town its horrible taste, was surprising. Anyways a lot of people have been giving low reviews on here which is ok I just want to thank this place for not putting up false reviews of 5 star ratings and random praises unlike Aziz Coaches.

Chips are always very and even when they say it's fresh....que system never matters these guys just service whoever and whenever... milkshake on the menu but never available last 4/5 months if I've ever stopped to ask for milkshake staright answer no milkshake! Put me if ordering anything else...I always try to avoid this branch if possible!

No star for this chip shop! I have been there today and made the biggest mistake by ordering two fish and chips. If you look closer of the photo, the fish was yellow???!!! What kind of species is that? Whats the taste like? Bland, greasy and chewy. And the staff? They probably had too much yellow fish as they do look like they are in pain!

Love the pizza from Big John's, especially with a BBQ sauce base. The options for customising them are great and it doesn't take too long to make (at least when we stopped by around 9pm). The chips could be better though - not quite up to 'chip shop' quality. Parking a little tricky too, but there are spots on some of the side roads.

If I could give this place zero I would do not eat from here service is shocking & get ripped off,you ring to complain cuz half your order is missing & you get told the delivery driver stole it & after looking into this place only has a 2 star food rating,food went in the bin,wouldn't eat here if it was free,stay away from the place

But my favourite thing about it is that they do PROPER potato chips...None of this fries rubbish. Real chips that are packaged up properly and are still hot when I get home ! Most of the foods ready and on the hot plate are dry or look sorry for themselves. They are quick, and polite but not engaging or entirely welcoming. It's just a chain chip shop and not a very good one. Chips aren't chip shop chips. Taste more like McCain's oven chips in a fryer. Poor ingredients and limited menus

Tonight I had the £5.99 fish and chips meal the fish was nice but the chips was totally unedable the guy serving seemed like he had to scrap the bottom of the tray to fill my box and when I got home they was dark brown I was gutted as I hadn't eaten all day I might have well put £5.99 down the drain. Never again!

Chips tasted like cleaning product and were cold with a cardboard texture, would strongly advise to avoid this place and try roosters a bit further down the bristol road or pizza pepper. Food quality at this place is not fit for human consumption, the staff are always rude and have no customer service skills.

Disgusting I've given this shop the benefit of the doubt a couple of times but my last order was vile. Food was cold, stale tasting, flavourless and considering the delivery driver sat outside for 10 mins I'm not surprised. Id avoid this place yes its cheap but its because the quality and service is so bad.

Ordered via deliveroo, arrived pretty quickly. Pizza is delicious, perfect comfort food at a reasonable price. We got the deep dish which had a good level of toppings on, will be interested to try the thin base next time for comparison. Definitely ordering again next time I crave carbs and cheese!

Reading reviews on here, there seems to be a common theme with food being cold. I can't say that mine was cold, if anything it was boiling. However, quite disappointed with this place. Chicken was very dry, and difficult to swallow. Staff were a little on the rude side. I wouldn't recommend it.

Prices have gone up. No option to have mayo or chili on your food instead you have to by a small chili tub for 50p. The quality of the food has become serioulsy poor. Disgusted, threw my food in the bin. Will not be visiting again, stay away unless you want to waste your money.

The food is grim. Chicken Nuggets are the easiest thing to get right, but they got them sooooo wrong, they tasted almost fishy. The chips were dry, and the cheesy garlic bread was just stodgy. I barely ate any of it and it ended up in the bin where it belonged.

Avoid avoid avoid, pathetic service and they basically steal your money by never giving you your complete order. Didn't even try to understand my order. Go elsewhere and find better and boycott big johns as they all seem to be as bad as each other.

I ordered a takeaway on a Tuesday evening and had a delivery estimate of less than thirty minutes. It took over an hour and a half to be delivered and was cold when it arrived. We rung them no apology or attempt to make up for their mistake.

The Masala fish wrap is amazing. However, everything else is just standard cheap deep fried food. I live 5mins drive from there and can count the number of times i've used it in 10years. The staff quality of service is as cheap as its food.

Our order was completely different to the food we received. A masala fish kebab was a donner kebab instead. A margarita pizza (for a vegetarian) was covered in meat. When we tried calling no one answered. Poor service.

This place used to be good. But lately they feel that students community will buy anything you give. They have completely reduced the salad they give, the ingredients on the pizza. The customer service is poor too.

Very clean place. And the food looks very fresh. I had a pizza and it was really nice. Very thick not like these thin pizza you get from other places. The chicken is cooked perfectly. Thoroughly enjoyed the food.

Quick friendly service but not everyone is distanced or wears a mask including local police who never wear masks and are allowed to push in. I don't mind giving them priority but they could at least wear a mask.

Clean place. Nowhere to sit inside but also, there is a step to enter so may not be accessible but food looked freshly prepared and was served piping hot! Was pretty tasty too …

The worst food I’ve ever had I nearly threw up after eating it. The wings were definitely old as it tastes absolutely disgusting.

Picked up food with taxi waiting. 5 min trip everything cold. Asked for masala fish all i got was a dried out battered fish with jalapeanos. If you cant do it right take off the menu.

Great drunk food, but closes way to early to even specify as drunk food. You're chicken burgers are poisonous. And the staff are judgemental when I come in drunk and craving food.

It was horrible. I was not given the meal that I ordered and the staff did not speak English very well. Also, you can not do a meal deal of chips and a drink with a kebab menu.

Pizzas are cheap due to competing with the pizza shop next door. Staff are all nice and friendly and it's not too far from the house. However there's nowhere to park legally.

Stopped here on the way back from my visit in Tamworth, I did not enjoy my chips! They were hard and tasteless I wish I went to Taks in Northfield, at least they can cook!!

Got lot of offers in the heart of selly oak. Quick service and clean. Reception could be more warm and welcoming. No car parking... Elliot road has double yellow lines.

The usual big John's fast food place. Standard menu available. No easy parking as on main road junction, need to park down the side street and walk back.

Good selection of food, and at great prices. Well located, easy to get to. Staff here are very friendly and helpful. Definitely comes well recommended.

Absolutely superb chicken and chips are pretty good too. Delivery is also quick enough, and service in store is fast. Can't have any complaints at all

Should change name to little John's. Paid £2.49 for large chips was size of a small bag at any other chippy. Thought they'd give me the wrong order.
