Having tried quite a few bike shops in Bristol for repairs, servicing etc this is my most trusted and go to shop. First off the work they do has always been as good as anywhere else, in fact I've been unhappy with what's been done in some of the other places. The major advantage over other shops is the price which is better on two counts - the labour here is about half the cost of some of the more aesthetically pleasing places, and also if your bike is used primarily for commuting then they have components that are both compatible and don't cost the earth. For example I ride a 90s steel frame racer with gear levers on the down tube - I needed some replacement shifters and they have a set in the back which they sold me for a fiver. I needed a new wheel and they had a rear wheel which was ~£30 and only charged me a tenner to change the freehub, cassette, tyre and tube across - some shops will charge you more than that to change an inner tube. Also good about this place is that on weekdays you can walk in in the morning and they can usually fit your bike in and fix it the same day, if not they can do it the next. I once called Mud Dock about getting some work done and they were trying to schedule me in for 2 weeks later which isn't much good for a commuter. Only drawback is that if I was buying a new bike from there the shop is so small and packed with bikes that it would be difficult to browse their stock.

Took my bike in for a brake service, when I came to pick it up they told me that they'd needed to re-align the rear axle, which was £45 extra. I feel that they could have called me to check that I was happy to pay, but if it needed to be done, fair enough. I cycled it home, and when I engaged the brakes the first time... they fell off my bike. Luckily it was in my drive, and not in the road. I understand that mistakes happen, and I dropped it in again and they were able to fix it, but it could've easily caused an accident, and I feel that it was pretty unprofessional. This was around Christmas, so I wasn't cycling very much at all. When I did start cycling again I realised pretty quickly that the rear axle was completely buggered. I tried to get in contact with the Bike Workshop, but after a few days and unanswered calls, I had to go elsewhere. They'd massively over-tightened the rear axle, causing it to shatter. So all in all, they charged me 4 times the price for a brake service, which they effed up, and as a bonus wrecked my rear axle. Completely unprofessional.

I use this shop very regularly and always appreciate their advice and help in getting you what you need for the right price (they won't push you into buying something fancy just to make a few quid). Why I am minded to review though is that I recently took my bike in because I had a problem with the gear shifter. They told me the replacement part would be £75 (plus labour) and ordered one in for me. When I went to collect my bike, the lady told me that when she took apart the shifter, she managed to fix it, so only charged me the labour. I had gone into the shop fully intending to spend that money (and happy to as I had caused the fault with the shifter myself), and could have left the shop none the wiser, but instead I left with a big smile on my face. Cheers guys - keep going the extra mile!

Disappointing. Different prices for the same product depending on who serves you. Not very warm to customers and an arrogant edge to the whole experience. It's about customer service, not making everyone feel like an idiot because they don't work with bikes all day. With a little consistency (set prices) and thought put into your front of shop, customer facing business - you should see a rise in repeat trade. As it stands, I'll be giving you a wide birth for the near future and would advise others to do the same. Another reason for writing this review is after speaking to friends about the shop it was apparent they had had similar, if not worse experiences.

After test riding a 2nd-hand bike I agreed a price and left my number, and was told to expect a call the next day when the final repairs were completed. The next day I didn't receive a call, so went back to the shop near closing time to see when the repairs would be done. Whilst queuing to enter the shop, I saw another customer buy the bike I had agreed to pay for. I am frustrated that even after agreeing a price I was not called back and that the bike was gone within 24 hours. This was the first time I had been to this shop, and this experience has completely put me off going back in the future.

I found the member of staff who served me was a little arrogant and not very warm/friendly. I asked if they sold chains and the guy fetched one for me. It was a quality chain and quite expensive so I asked if they sold any others, it turned out they did sell cheaper ones but instead of giving me the choice he tried to sell me the more expensive one. He also tried to sell me an over priced tool that I wouldn't have necessarily needed. Shame, because the shop used to be great years ago, I won't be returning unless i'm desperate.

  • Mr_Smellnice

Very knowledgeable and helpful staff, and didn't insist on me booking the bike in for repairs - after a bit of a chat it turned out i could probably do it myself, and was sold a very reasonably priced second hand part to do it with. I imagine had i taken it to one of the larger chain stores they'd have got me to book it in, put a brand new part on and charged me an arm and a leg for it + labour. I've used this shop a few times in the past and would highly recommend it.

  • Brian McCulloch

A knowledgeable and trustworthy bike shop - one of a handful of shops in Bristol that have a deep understanding of bikes and a nice way about them. I've been using the Bike Workshop for years and find them consistently helpful. Prices are fair for what is a skilled job. I've used them for wheel building, fork servicing (sent away to a specialist) and various other mechanical jobs where specialist tools and knowledge are needed. They've always got the job done.

  • Jack Champion

I came to the shop with a strict budget and looking for a commuter bike that could also cut it as a casual road bike. From start to finish the staff were excellent, knowledgeable and built me a bike from a mix old and new parts. I ultimately ended up with a bike far beyond my means, during a time when parts are extremely hard to come by. The people here know their stuff and if you give them the room, they will make you something special.

  • Susie Weldon

Got to give a five star rating for this place after I went in saying my bike (bought elsewhere) was too big for me. Was thinking of spending £370 on a new bike but was persuaded to try a new stem for my handlebars first; it transformed my experience of my bike and, secondhand, cost less than £10. These guys really rate customer service and getting it right above just making a sale. No wonder the place is full of happy customers.

  • Matt Griffith

Have been coming to Bike Workshop for several years - find them one of the friendliest and most helpful places in Bristol. They do good reliable services, and incredibly good value (including recycling parts when other places will charge you top dollar for brand new), and are a friendly and approachable bunch. I'm not a hipster cyclist, and they just help you keep your bike on the road and well looked after. Recommend.

  • Adrián Jiménez Ortiz

I brought my bike here to change casette, chain, brake pads, adjust gears and lubricate and tight the bottom bracket (cause I was feeling a kind of pulse on the pedals). They not only changed the parts but cleaned all the old grease and put a new one, so all the sistem was nice and clean. Also they did the work very fast (I think next day the had it finished) and for a sensible price. Now my old bike feels like new.

  • Tom Treacher

Having just moved to Bristol I spent three days exploring almost every bike shop I could track down. I ended up getting a new hybrid after years of cycling second hand bangers and couldn't be more happy with it. The Bike Workshop offers very friendly and informed service with great products at a reasonable price (this can also be said for The Bristol Bike Project and Jakes Bikes) This place comes highly recommended.

  • Simon Gordon-Smith

Fantastic local bike shop, highly recommend. Great after-sales care too. I took my old commuter road bike in, which needed a lot of work. We talked through options, from replacing all the broken parts to buying a new bike. Their focus was on re-use and sustainability, even at the expense of losing a new bike sale. In the end we converted my bike to a single-speed, which is working perfectly. Thanks!

  • David Christopherson

It's a proper bike shop. No-nonsense, just great advice, great service and really honest prices. I went in there after my back wheel totally buckled after riding around with a broken spoke, they fitted a new wheel and also replaced the brake pads (which I had also asked for) for just £50 right there and then. I really couldn't recommend this place more.

  • Daniel Penfold

Amazing.. Been hunting for a weird sized replacement bolt for a seat post for two weeks in every bike shop in Bristol. The guy identified it before it left my hand and found a replacement in seconds. It was like stepping into a wand shops Saved me £20 for a new post Know where I I will be going when I need my bike serviced These guys know their stuff

  • Jason Gardiner

Brilliant service as usual lady who served me today was super helpful, was after a tool I needed pretty urgent to remove a bottom bracket every shop around wasn’t interested in helping but the lady in bike workshop sold me a spare from there tools and only charged me 2quid! Great service great price will use again for sure super helpful

  • Jonathan Gander

On a trip from John O'Groats to Land's End. Bike broke down so bought one from them. Staff were very helpful but whoever had set the bike up had done a shoddy job. Unfortunately it lasted only 30 miles during which the bottom bracket developed huge play in it and then 10 more miles and the pedal crank fell off. Caveat Emptor !

  • Valerie Knapp

I brought my bike here a few times and I found the service to be honest and straightforward. When I needed to replace a wheel, they had a variety of options and prices, and I got to choose the right one for me. It's not cheap but reasonably priced and much more helpful than anywhere else I've found in Bristol.

  • William Barber

The guys at the Bike Workshop are absolutely brilliant, super friendly and really know their stuff. Prices are very competitive and over my several visits work is carried out both quickly and to a great standard. I'll never go anywhere else for bike maintenance - undoubtedly the best in Bristol!

  • Darren Whittington

Popped my bike in for service, pointed out clearly what the problems were, they did another £60 pounds of work without consulting me and replaced parts that did not require replacing, some of my original issues not being resolved. On the upside the work they did do was of a high quality.

  • Adrian Finn

Fantastic and very knowledgable bike shop - I'd always trust their experience and opinions here rather than the bigger chains. They also have an Aladdin's cave of older / recycled parts that are great for restoring or building up an older frame. Long may this type of shop prosper...

  • Peter Cross

Great bike shop, really good selection of cool vintage road bikes. Owner is a super nice guy very happy to chat about all the history of all the different stuff. Bought an old Raleigh in good condition and a year on its still riding nicely without needing any major maintenance

  • Sam “Scribbler” Morris

Managed to sort me a new wheel in the 20 minutes before they closed after I came off and buckled mine. Lovely people, and super helpful. Plus, it helps that they actually stock bike parts, unlike the local chain stores that seemingly don't stock things like wheels or tyres.

  • Nick Blomley

Had to wait 15 minutes whilst the manager was on the phone when I arrived, then kept having to ring back to ask about my bike. Mechanic was standoffish and impolite - also didn't bother mentioning that he had put in parts that didn't match other parts of the bike. Avoid.

  • Monika Pletty

Complete ripoff, beware!!!! I had my bike serviced 2-3 months ago, I was was told that there was absolutely nothing wrong with it as it was hardly used, yet I was charged £60 to have it checked and the bike came back dirty just as it was, the worst experience ever!!!!

  • Loborhox

Amazing workshop! I was kind of desperate searching for a decent 2nd hand bike, and a friend told me about this shop, and then found what I was looking for! Staff was very kind tuning up my new bike doing the last details. So I definitely recommend them! Thanks guys!

  • Zach Baker

DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE. they gave ma a quote of £80 full service including rims, chains, cassets ETC but when going to the shop they said it will be £250. When pressing to see why each person wanted to increase the price going as high as £300 FOR A BASIC SERVICE.

  • F H

Great place to buy parts - take your bike along and they'll point you in the right direction if you don't know what you need. Sometimes have cheaper used parts. Very friendly. Had some work done by them and it was a bit mixed (derailleur wasn't indexed properly).

  • Mark Churchill

An exceedingly helpful place. Each time I've been in for a repair, it has been completed to a good standard in quick time and at a very reasonable price. They are flexible and accommodating. Thanks for helping keep this cyclist on the road and out of the car.

  • Camille Parke

Tom went above and beyond to source a derailleur hanger for an obscure Ukrainian bike. That means a Ukrainian refugee family living in Bristol are now mobile and very grateful. Small piece of kit but vital and without it a nice bike would be junk !

  • Tom Nutting

Such a friendly and helpful bike shop where you are not judged for not knowing everything about bikes. My wheel came off and I couldn’t figure out how to get it back on; Henry quickly repaired it for me for free so I could get on to work :)

  • Jimmy Deimert

Needed a seat post urgently, no other bike shops in the area were helpful at all, the guy in this place however, gave me all the help I needed and was also very friendly and went out of his way to make sure I was happy, . …

  • Jonathan Austin

I came to the shop for a minor service to replace a bike chain and tuning gears on my road bike. I found them very reasonable, explained the problem, didn't do unnecessary extra work and all at a good price. Would recommend.

  • Simon banbury

Excellent shop. Simple repair needed to bike. Basket required fixing firmly. I was able to discuss the options and then decide which would suit best. Helpful advice and the modification was ideal and good value.

  • Gary Vincent

Brilliant Service and friendly staff. Dropped in on the off chance for a wheel true on the day ! Very accommodating and did the job in 2 hours. Old school service... Much appreciated guys …

  • Lewis Olliver

Excellent helpful staff. Reasonably priced and they even lent me bicycle since I commute to work and they had a wait of a few days for parts. Been going there for years. Highly recommended

  • Ski Smith

The staff are arogant and over charge, Give you one price for th part but when its fitted th priced is doubled, they made a pigs ear of fitting a chain set and chain Avoid this shop !!

  • Mike Saunders

Generally excellent. Always seem busy and different staff offer a ‘range of opinions’ on stuff but I find myself going back time after time. Usually excellent value and well informed.

  • Aaron

Very poor service got told one price then all of a sudden it’s a different price also left bike very dirty (seat post is white , now black ) thanks but no thanks

  • Chris I

On their advice bought a (pricey) bike pump from them. Used it a few times and the thread inside tore so couldn't attach it to the tyre valve any more. Useless.

  • Scott Alexander-Bown

Friendly, knowledgeable and good value. The chaps replaced rear wheel on my folding bike in Nov 2014 and did a great job and turned it around very quickly.

  • Mark Chopra

Asked to fix my front derailleur and managed to fit the repair in very promptly. Offered plenty of know-how and very competitively priced!

  • Te Kore

Feet up on their phones, dismissive of business and even if agreed on a price they'll ring you later and double it. Avoid like the plague.

  • Frankie W

The staff here were very sound and helpful on the occasion in which I visited. They all seem passionate about all things bike related.

  • Rob Byrne

I experienced the sort of friendly welcome that I’m sad to say is missing from most bike shops I visit. Good prices, great service.
