Nice little bagel shop with decent bagels but small selection. I stopped in here to grab a bagel while waiting for a nearby store to open. The shop itself was small but inviting. The interior seemed to be decorated with signage and other accents which referenced a subway stop. The interior was clean, which is something I always appreciate, though there isn't much seating. If you go when it's busy, don't expect to be able to enjoy your bagel inside. The staff seemed friendly and made sure that I had everything I needed. They prepared the orders quickly and did a good job of keeping everything running smoothly. The most disappointing part of my visit was the selection of bagels and schmears, and the actual bagel itself. Was it a bad bagel? No. But it wasn't a fantastic bagel either. I was bummed to see no honey schmear, but every place is different so not a huge deal. There wasn't a huge variety of bagels though, so I ended up with a cinnamon raisin spice bagel with plain schmear. While it tasted fine, it didn't taste that much different from the standard non-boiled bagels you can get at most places in the Portland area. While this was my first supposed "New York" style bagel, I've been told that the difference between a real bagel and "round bread" is like night and day. This did not seem to me to fall into that category. All in all if you want a bagel that's good enough and a nice place to enjoy it, Bowery Bagels will suit you just fine.

1st thing's first : Best NY-style bagel Portland has ever had. There's not even a close 2nd Staff is always very friendly and everyone there takes Covid precautions seriously. Always plan on taking your food to go as the place is small. Perhaps walk 1 block west to the North Park blocks. I've tried the Dan Burnside breakfast sandwich and it is so damn tasty and well priced at $7.50, which is extremely cheap for a meal sammy. Otherwise, my pup Nova and I come in once or twice a week for a half dozen bagels and I've tried numerous kinds. All baked fresh, that damn day. I've yet to be disappointed by any of them. Their cold beverage case is fairly well covered. Anything from name brand sodas to tea's ect. I always asked for their black ice tea, which they make because, believe it or not, people do be f@#&* up a black iced tea all the time and theirs is perfect Important to note: This isn't some boujee-Portland-hipster place. You. Just. Get. Normal. Bagel. Variations. There aren't any "Ice Cream" or "Thanksgiving Turkey" flavors, FOH with that nonsense Bonus points for always being so sweet to Nova

The staff were friendly, but not very focused or helpful. They got our order wrong, and cheerfully didn't seem to understand what the problem was with that. Finally gave up trying to get the mocha latte we ordered (unamused though we were with the soy latte we were given), and just came to terms with the fact that the hot chocolate would remain only half a 16oz hot chocolate. The breakfast sandwiches were....not edible. The bagels were chewy, tough, and tasteless. The egg was not appealing and the bacon was...something with bacon flavoring. We trashed the sandwiches and the soy latte, downed the 8oz of lukewarm chocolate. I enjoyed the yoghurt with dried raisins and toasted coconut...even though it was impossible to find a place to eat it and I couldn't manage the sandwiches and drinks and tub of yoghurt until I had thrown everything else away....since we were shoo-ed out the door the moment we tried to eat or drink anything inside. Waste of $30. We went across the street to Johns Cafe and had the best breakfast I have had in along time. Steer away from the bagels and go sit down at John's.

I grew up eating authentic NY style bagels on the east coast, and I can tell you Bowery Bagels are legit! I can't go a week without coming here. I would respectfully argue that any reviewer claiming these to be "too hard" may not be totally aware of (or perhaps just do not like) what an authentic NY bagel is. They are boiled for a few seconds before they get baked. This seals the crust and gives it that authentic bagel crunch on the outside that bubbles slightly when toasted and develops another layer of flavor, while also remaining chewy on the inside. This is what makes a great bagel. Most store bought and inauthentic bagels are soft because it is simply just enriched wheat flour bread shaped in a circle. Not here. These are quality. I don't think it's fair at all to criticize a bagel shop or dock them stars for having authentic NY style bagels, which is what the website even states they do. Bowery is the best and the staff are lovely too <3

VEGANS STAY AWAY!!!!!! was on my way to work event so didn’t want to wait for a sandwich because I knew it would take longer given since it seemed busy when I walked in. Ordered a drip and a pre-made vegan knish thinking it would be less than 5 mins. Nope. Waited 20 mins and finally asked about it. Got a “so sorry here it is, but it’ll take 20-30 minutes to warm it up.” I was already 10 minutes late to my work event so I said “you’re fine just give it to me cold” Took two bites and immediately realized it was NOT vegan. I called and they apologized and said I could get a bagel made in exchange. When I went back to pick it up they tried to charge me the difference of $3!!!? I’ve been vegan for 15 years and if you have any kind of strict dietary requirements you know how AWFUL an experience like this is. As a food service worker, I would never ask a customer to pay $3 if I accidentally did something like this.

Very good New York style bagels in a really clean store with friendly and efficient staff. The bagel egg only sandwich was very good and nicely wrapped. The bagels were just the right amount of density yet chewy soft for NY style bagels. The egg was good as well. The staff was friendly and accommodating with dietary restriction requests. They were very friendly to a newcomer as they were to several regulars that came in. They had their orders known as they said hello. The store is very clean and seems well run. They scored a perfect health code rating on the last inspection in June 2022. The Pride items around make the environment welcoming and affirming. Not a direct effect on the products sold, but adds to the general experience as a positive one. A great choice for a good bagel, sandwich or warm or cold beverages.

  • jbucky

A small shop on Broadway surrounded by homeless craziness they could do with cleaning their shop up a bit, making it a touch nicer and also being a touch more welcoming to their customers. The bagels are ok, I might even say good, but I am no new yorker. Their menu seems a smidge over priced for the quality of the food and experience. With a little investment from the owners to make this a bit nicer of a place, I think it would go a long way, fresh coat of paint, keep it cleaner, a few more lights and nice bar stool area would not take much. Now, if their food was amazing and it was a bit gritty that would be another review, but it's not. Dear owners, invest some cash, maybe pay your workers more and maybe they would be nicer and maybe you would have more customers too.

Stumbled upon this establishment on my way to the Bolt Bus. So glad I did! I ordered coffee and a bagel with avocado. After the transaction went through, they discovered the avocado wasn't available and offered me any other topping I wanted. They gave me veggies and vegan shmear, all the while quite apologetic. No offense was taken by this customer, as the staff were so friendly and efficient; it was clear that pleasing their customer was a priority. Besides the great customer service, it was a delicious bagel. That and the Stumptown coffee were just the perfect combination for boarding the Bolt Bus. Very vegan friendly, great people working there, I'll be returning! #veganfriendly

Delicious bagels and sandwiches! The sandwich that they had for Portland Sandwich Week was phenomenal. I don't even like beets and still loved the sandwich, that's how good it is. The bagels are fresh and they aren't skimpy on the shmear. I don't know why people are saying they are expensive. They aren't. A bagel with shmear is only gonna cost you a few bucks. It's actually cheaper to get a freshly made bagel with homemade shmear here than it is to get a lame prepacked one at Starbucks. My only complaint is that there isn't any room to eat inside and there aren't any tables outside either. We ended up eating our food in the car.

The bagels are fresh and taste good. The staff (only some of them) have an attitude problem. I like to ask for extra cream cheese since sometimes it can be very light. No problem and i always offer to pay extra, I really don't mind. Well as I pay by card I hit the 10% tip (usually I choose 15/20%) by accident. With no obvious way to back out, I just finished the payment. Well the young lady behind the counter stared at me like I'd stepped in something I shouldn't have. That was nothing like the stare down I got when she handed me my bagel. Well sure enough there was almost no cream cheese on my bagel . Seriously, ...

Stopped in here randomly while waiting on the Bolt bus and it was amazing. A warm respite from the cold filled with amazing bread smells and friendly staff with big smiles. They answered my questions about the smoked salmon spread and how fishy it may smell and so we're helpful in my quest to not be THAT person on the bus. They also suggested the great lavender iced tea which was so delightful! Warmed/toasted that bagel to perfection and I was set to have the best snack experience on my bus ride. The store/restaurant is small with not much seating, but they have a great selection and great prices!

  • Lee

Great bagels, alright service. They take your name when taking your order, cool so far. There were multiple people in the shop, and they called out the name of a sandwich. It was what I had ordered but with there being more than one person I asked if it was for Lee. "I don't know, is this what you ordered," in the snarkiest tone possible. What a jerk. Next, I called 4 times and went to voicemail each time. They don't allow you to order through post mates in the morning (why even have it?) despite advertising Postmates. The only other option is paying $1.50 to order ahead.

Was heading up to Seattle on the Bolt Bus and saw Bowery Bagels from the bus stop. Having been born and lived near the Bowery, in New York, I was curious. The décor is that of the old Noah's Bagels, tiled to look like a NY subway station. The staff were attentive, getting my order just right (and that's not a given). The bagels are good, and the toppings too. It's not up to par with NY's best -- Russ & Daughters on Houston St -- but it was very satisfying in Portland, very early on a Saturday morning.

  • Laura Lay

Bagels are mediocre. Didn't toast well like we asked & got yelled at for taking a sip of my coffee in the store even though I put my mask back up immediately after my sip & we were the only people in the store & I was all the in the far corner way beyond 10 feet from the people working which a 6ft tall glass case between us. I'm trusting them to make my food & not get my sick & in any other restaurant you can take your mask off while eating & drinking & I didn't even do that. Won't ever go back

  • Ruthie Elizabeth

i immediately regretted not getting a bagel with schmear. i ordered the oliver lent because the gruyere really sounded like it would hit the spot, but truth be told — go with what you know. i know i like sesame bagels with schmear. the bagels are OK, but they’re not the right texture — reminded me of really dense bread. the service was great. the staff was super friendly and the coffee they made was good, too. it’s worth stating, the bagels are superior to any i’ve had in seattle.

  • Pamela Koppe

Shout out to the amazing staff member who helped me out this morning. I was having a really bad morning, came in the middle of having a panic attack and they made me feel very welcomed and taken care of. Sorry I don’t remember your name, and you might not think this was a big deal but it was huge for me; thanks for treating me with kindness while I was having a hard time. PS: the coffee and the bagel sandwich were just what I needed to get myself to a calmer place ❤️

  • Ed D

I'm eating the Reuben right now and it's incredible. I'm not a huge fan of bagels generally because I have weak teeth and find them difficult to chew, but the everything bagel saturated with pastrami juice is perfect. Fresh and easy to chew. Service was very friendly, preparation was quick, shop felt clean, safe, and welcoming, substantial sandwich for a reasonable price. Will return in the future.

  • V C

It's the kind of place that sells "nyc authenticity" but puts the schmear on there like butter. Maybe if they spent less on on authentic looking fake subway mosaics they would need to stiff you cream cheese. I'm still giving five stars cause the coffee is good, the bagels themselves pretty "authentic" and the exhausted looking young women who work there are always "inauthentically" friendly

  • Jenny Koll

Was craving a bagel and was so happy to find this unassuming shop close to my office in downtown. Having lived right outside NYC for a few years, I’ve yet to find a great bagel shop in Portland before now. So many bagel options with lots of schmear choices to mix and match. The espresso I ordered was also delicious and paired perfectly with my bagel. Can’t wait to go back for more bagels!

  • Wyatt Savage

Ive ate here a few times as i work in the neighborhood a few blocks away , I have yet to be disappointed there is never a long wait the bagels are always warm and delicious. The customer service is awesome quick and nice and the staff always keeps the shop clean definitely happy with Bowery Bagels! Ps if they had mimosas this would be the coolest brunch spot in Portland just saying

  • Jessica Kelley

They have the best bagels you’ll find this side of the Rockies. Their staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. I made an order the day prior for a brunch spread I put together for Admin Day and Chad Brown was very responsive and very helpful and made it so easy. Everything was perfect as always. Be sure to take advantage of their house made schmeer! It’s heavenly.

  • Zach Adham

Smelled like burning bagels inside. Line was long and slow-moving on a weekend morning. Bagels are expensive for the size (i.e. small), but good quality. Staff were kind despite being so busy. I personally find Henry Higgins bagels adequate for me at a lower price point and less of a wait time. I'll likely only come back here if I'm in the neighborhood.

  • Matt

Stumbled upon this place on Broadway and just had a really great sea salt bagel and schmear. It was chewy and slightly crispy on the outside like it supposed to be. The interior is small but really nicely fitted out like a New York subway stop. Looks like they have some interesting offerings, looking forward to coming back for lunch!

  • Scott Markwell

Good bagels and coffee. Isn't a deal, they are in line with other coffee shops/cafes downtown with quality coffee. Not a pleasant atmosphere inside, seems to be setup to encourage people to get out instead of hanging out. Not a place to crack a laptop or read the paper. Overall solid if you are looking for a bagel and coffee to go.

  • Taryn Dorsey

I came in a rush today to get something to eat before I got on the Bolt Bus and everyone was really helpful and sweet. I have to say that not only was the customer service fantastic but that Everything bagel was EVERYTHING. I haven't had a bagel that tasty in years. Thank you for the delicious breakfast and a great start to my day.

  • Shiraz

Solid bagels and friendly staff. But not a very large selection of flavors for bagels. Makes sense as they might have a lot of left overs if they did that I guess, since it doesn't seem like a super busy place. Cool small biz vibe, but there isn't really any seating other than a counter with some stools. Definitely a to go place.

  • Michael Nielson

Amazing bagels and schmear. Closest thing to real east coast bagels. The difference in texture from crust to interior is AMAZING. Wide variety of flavors. I'd recommend getting a dozen as they get you 13 instead of 12. Only caveat - price - these aren't grocery store bagels, so they're not priced the same as grocery store bagels.

  • Nidhi Shah

Bagels: Best place to get bagels, their broad variety of cream cheese and vegan bagels is crazy impressive. I tried Jalapeno salt bagel with walnut pear blue cheese, it was delicious. You can do bagels into two halves and try different cream cheese on it. Coffee: Try their sugar syrup coffees it is different and tasty.

  • bree

Best Bagels in Portland. Trust me, I’ve tried them all. Bowery goes a fantastic job and offer a bakers dozen at a great price. Wonderful bagel breakfast sandwiches as well! Worth the try, you won’t be disappointed. Note: Staff is always fast and friendly ☺️

This place has tanked and this is coming from a New Yorker of 13 years. Only plain bagels available at my last visit added smoked salmon and it was very fishy taste ick. Second visit everything bagel toasted with cream cheese. Top bagel chewy bottom half decent crispy crunchy. Can I only buy the bottom half ?

  • Riley Esmay

Bagel was OK. The bagel itself was good, but I paid an extra $4 ish to get sausage and cheese on the bagel, but it tasted like cheap packaged food and wasn't worth the $4 extra. The bagels themselves are good, and they have reasonable prices for the bagels being good, but not the extra stuff on the bagel.

  • Michelle August

Clearly anyone who left less than 5 stars doesn’t know how bagels should taste. I got an everything bagel with herb schmear and it was absolutely divine! Perfect level of crunch. I recently moved to the PNW and y’all like your bagels doughy and dense for some reason - these bagels are definitely not that.

  • Daryl Faulkner

The bagels are good enough. I'd advise you to take your bagel back with you and toast it on your own if that's how you like it. They have clearly lost the plot on what it means to actually toast a bagel and are more concerned with closing the ticket and moving on than getting your order right.

  • Phil Orchard

Absolutely sublime. These are the best bagels west of the Mississippi, and better than a lot of bagels I've had on the east coast for that matter. The main event though, is their savory vegan schmear. It's a house-made, cashew based cream cheese that is totally delectable and really addictive.

  • callmems 76

I had the bacon, egg & cheese onion bagel with a cranberry oatmeal cookie. Everything was really good, but that cranberry cookie was baked to perfection. It was soft, chewy, and had a nice flavor to it. I'll be sure to go back, while visiting Portland, for one of those delicious cookies.

I ordered catering for delivery for an office event and the staff of Bowery Bagels were the epidome of helpful and perfection. The delivery of our large order came right on time and was exactly right. I can't recommend Bowery Bagels enough for their quality service and quality food.

  • Anne Bunster

I ordered the Dan Burnside Bagel on Garlic Herb, and got an iced vanilla latte from Bowery, both were amazing!! I literally took a bite and went “oh my god…. Oh my god!” it was so good. Coffee was perfect, and one bagel sandwich kept me full all day. Definitely coming back soon!

  • Vee Amerio

Love this place. The salt & pepper bagel makes an excellent base for a veggie sandwich. Their fresh herb cream cheese is just plain amazing. And the half-price baker's dozen (a special they offer near closing time) is a fabulous way to stock my freezer with bagels for the week.

  • Jessica Cummins

The most delicious bagel breakfast sandwiches in Portland. My husband and I love going here on Sunday mornings. The staff is so friendly and fun — we always feel so welcomed! There is also a rewards program for frequent visitors and you get a free coffee drink for signing up.

  • Charles Batty-Capps

Bowery bagels is amazing and deserves 5/5 stars! They have excellent bagels, tasty bagel sandwiches, veg friendly options. Also, they have the best coffee for a breakfast place - water avenue coffee is excellent and bowery brews their cold brew and drip coffee well.

  • Kelly Chashchin

Wow! Genuinely the best bagels I’ve had in a long time. The vegan savory spread was delectable and perfectly seasons. And the vegan breakfast sandwich was so mouthwateringly delicious, I thought I died. The service was super friendly and the atmosphere was perfect.

  • Chance Calderhead

Y’all gotta put the cream cheese on the egg n meat sandwiches when people ask. Nobody ever puts the cream cheese on those in addition to the regular cheese. Wasn’t busy either. Good bagel tho, just adding my own cream cheese at home… pls read orders when building.

  • Q Madp

Stopped in on my way to passing time. Small place. No wait time. Bagels are good. Price OK. -- You should eat your bagel here or at your destination. Walk one block east munching on your good bagel, and your nose will be overwhelmed with the human waste smell.

  • Thomas Allen

They do have good food I’ve been here 3 times now cause it’s close to my work but each time I’ve came they have raised the price of the milk by 1$ each time.? She charged me for a expresso instead of a cup of milk. I don’t understand why is all I’m saying lol

  • Laura Paschke

I wish I’d listened to the bad reviews before going here. It’s a bagel..how bad can it be? Well, bad unfortunately. Bagel itself was too dense and dry but the worst part is they got our very simple order wrong. Don’t waste your time and money with this place.

  • Jay

Bagel shop off of broadway in downtown. Nice employees, great variety of bagels, bacon is homemade, and can even get a basic omelet as the egg of choice without any change in price. Been our go to place for bfast sandwiches after Eisenhower closed

Finally, a bagel shop that actually knows how to make bagels. The coffee is good. Adequate variety and selection. Awesome service. Clean, small interior. Perfect for a quick bagel fix. Breakfast sandwiches are excellent. As Portland as it gets!

  • April Wright-Sharp

My wife and I stopped by on impulse and got what I believe was day old baglels. They were so hard we could barely chew them. Maybe because it was late morning and we were in our dog walking outfits of dingy sweats and hoodies they thought

  • Chris Lazarus

Hands down the best bagels in Portland or anywhere west of the Mississippi. I used to live in Brooklyn NY not far from the top rated bagel shop there..Bowery is every bit as good. Have tried many others in Portland and been disappointed.

  • BETTY Rodriguez

Delicious dark roast coffee, yummy bagels & breakfast sandwiches! Excellent customer service:) Note: there are no seats available for those wanting to sit. My husband and I were perfectly fine enjoying our breakfast and people watching.

  • galby68

Ok, if they served more boutique coffee, this would have to be a 5-star review. How Portland is that, knocking off a star because of the coffee roaster? But they do make it well, and since it’s not called Bowery Coffee, let’s talk

  • piyush sopory

Delicious bagels, as good as any other. Had the plan and onion bagels. Warm and tastes fresh. The cream cheese options delicious too. Special shout out to the 2 staff who were working there- top customer service. Will visit again.

  • Joseph Peters

Delicious bagels, not too tough and definitely fresh. Pretty good coffee as well. Friendly staff. Bit of a wait mid-morning Sunday (10-15 minutes for the entire visit), but worth it if you don't need to be immediately in and out.

  • R. Kelley

In my opinion these are the best bagels in downtown Portland. The sandwich options are large and filling. The old town location feels very urban, one of the few blocks that hasn't been turned into condos and boutiques yet.

  • James Holohan

Busy spot, bagel sandwiches are ok, the espresso drinks are very sub par. Would recommend other spots in the relative area (spiel mans, rubensteins). Would probably just go with a bagel and schmear next time. More

  • Janelle Winter

Solid bagel place for a breakfast sammie. No seating options except for one small ledge to stand at and it is located in a not-so-great area, but I enjoyed a sunny side up egg on an onion bagel with cheese. Yum!

  • Marco Bernardi

Terrible and unprofessional service. The bagels are some of the best in town but the customer service and the professionalism is just horrid. I have no words and the frustration has just about led me to boycott.

  • Jules Wissmann (Jules)

Had the Sarah's Special on a garlic and herb bagel and it was fantastic! Cool little NY style/vibe shop! Just a couple stools at a counter in the window if you're wanting to eat in, but I took mine to go!

This is a good place for a quick bagel and a hot drink. It's not amazing, the bagels come out a little too hard when toasted in my opinion but they have a good variety and the flavors are great.

  • Katie Oestmann

The shear number of vegan and non-vegan options was amazing! The food was okay, their pumpkin spice latte was delicious! Definitely worth a visit, we will go back to try more combinations.

Have been twice so far and that’s all I need to know that I’ll be back over and over again. The bacon and egg bagel was incredibly tasty even on a “plain”. Very much recommend!

  • Francesca Erni

Pretty good! Everything bagel is too salty. That seems to be the norm with PNW bagels. They automatically toast/reheat it, which is a shame because it has a good chewiness.

  • Erin Ogden Green

Excellent bagel! Perfect level of chew, not sugary, good zing of yeast, excellent flavor and level of salt. Just a great bagel. Lox sandwich was also very nice.
