So this is a place I both love and hate. I love the van Leeuwen burger, I love their caeser salad (especially when they add extra chicken and bacon for me) and I love that they have a great beer selection. I love the quiet upstairs that I can look on to the canal, or in the summer, I love the terrace out front. What I hate is how a lot of their waiting staff simply ignore you. You could be standing at the bar whilst the bar tender is pouring a beer and wait upwards of 5 mins before he even turns around and acknowledges you. How difficult is it for him to say "I'll be right with you", and is it really that difficult to take an order AND pour a beer at the same time? I guess they don't hire staff who can multi-task. On top of that, when I ate there for dinner one evening, I sat upstairs. Not once did anyone come up to take my order, and each time I needed a refill, I had to walk back down to the bar myself. I know for a fact they wait tables upstairs, They've done it before at lunchtime. But the clown they had working that evening clearly had other ideas. There is ONLY ONE member of staff who knows what she's doing. She's Brazilian/Dutch, very friendly, very fast and always up for a chat. The rest of them are your usual no-clue millenials only there for a wage cheque at the end of the month. It's a shame really, but it has so much potential, and the chef clearly knows what they're doing.

Prima gelegen aan de Utrechtsestraat hoek Keizersgracht, met uitzicht op de gracht. Het is een buurtcafé waar naast veel buurtbewoners ook studenten en losse voorbijgangers komen. Heel vriendelijke medewerkers. Je kunt hier zowel ontbijt, lunch, als diner gebruiken. Er is ook een bovenruimte die je kunt huren. Voor het toilet moet je een smal trapje af. Buiten op het terras stonden tafeltjes met witte tafelkleden, een heel andere sfeer die mij minder aansprak. Het viel mij op dat bij de bediening veel van de losse drankjes met de hand werden aangeleverd die niet op een dienblad werden gezet. Soms niet helemaal hygiënisch, omdat de bediening met hun hand het glas boven aan de rand aanraakte. Mocht je dat ook onfris vinden, dan weet je dat en kun je ook je drankje zelf binnen ophalen bij de bar. Wat een beetje jammer was, dat om 17 uur de barbecue werd aangestoken, terwijl er anderhalf uur geen vlees op werd gelegd. Die bbq zette het hele terras in de blauwe rook en heeft mij uiteindelijk helaas verjaagd.

If I could give 0 stars I would. Came to this cafe and ordered bar snacks as they’d stopped lunch and not started dinner. Ordered spring rolls and olives. 40 minutes later we asked a waitress where our food was. She said the kitchen is busy. The table next to us (who arrived 5 mins before we asked where our food was) then got their food. We waited aasked again. Was then told the waitress who took our order had finished shift and never put the order through?!? We were told the snacks would be 5 minutes. Food arrives but the spring rolls, there are only 6 of them, the menu says 8 spring rolls. I tell the waitress when she brings the bill and she said “sorry but we have different menus” ?!?!? The bill was fully charged for the food we ordered; we begrudgingly paid it but this is honestly the worst service I’ve ever had - avoid!!!!

Today I ordered a falafel burger. On the menu it said it would come with yoghurt-mint dressing and it came also with nuts. The nuts were not mentioned in the menu so i told the waiter that i am allergic to nuts and it was not mentioned in the menu. Instead of giving me a new one for free the waiter demanded that I pay this one and refused to give me a new one for free because he said that I should’ve informed them in advance for my nut allergy. I simply didn’t because it was not mentioned on the menu that the falafel burger contains nuts. Someone can f*kind die because of that... people need to understand that allergies are a serious thing. I will demand a refund and look for my rights regarding this. Very disappointed of this place and it looked very promising....

The food wasn't bad but the service was terrible. The owner of the café was sitting inside shouting at the servers the whole time. He was talking bad about each foreign customer that got into the café and then left. I went there to read and order a tea and later breakfast, but still the owner and the servers constantly approached me asking if was going to order more, when I have just finished my plate and was clear that I was there to read for a while. At the end the owner approached me and lecture me about how I was using his café as a library and that that's not how things work in Amsterdam. Horrible experience and defeneltly no recommended to anyone.

Rustic, old looking, and tries to capture the vibe of the old Amsterdam "brown cafe's". If it succeeds, I'm not all too sure about. Their upstairs area, accessible through a narrow spiral staircase, is very cozy and has a great atmosphere, but it lacks a bit down stairs. They do have some great drinks on bottle and serve beer for an extremely decent price for Amsterdam standards. But when it's crowded inside, it gets very crowded fairly quickly as the place is not that big. The staff often consists of just one or two people, so when it's busy expect them to be a bit short on you, they got a lot of people to help.

We went there for breakfast and ordered 2 eggs on toast meals and orange juice. After about 30 minutes of waiting I noticed the chef leaving and figured maybe someone else is cooking in the kitchen. Keep in mind, we were the only ones in the place. After almost an hour in total of waiting, I asked if I can just pay for the drinks and leave because we had something booked. The girl looked at me like I was crazy.... they forgot to place our order!!! How? We were the only ones there! To add salt to the wound, our very small glasses of juice cost 9 euro. Wow. Disappointing to say the least.

I'm excited. I went here for breakfast and on entering I knew it was going to be great. the innkeeper speaks with his guest and you get immediately a homiesh feeling like you are visiting your favorite uncle for breakfast. The coffee and the breakfast were great and surprisingly cheaper as your run of the mill coffees here. Will definitely come again next time I am in Amsterdam

Absolutely wonderful food and great service! Had their Kip Avocado, which is a Chicken Avocado BLT with truffle parmesan -- delicious! I'm a slightly picky coffee drinker, but their Cappuccino was lovely and smooth! I added sugar because I wanted something a little sweet-- but definitely great without as well. Would definitely go back again!

The location is great, staff could be a bit more friendly but they were correct. Completely overpriced, the burger is pretty small and not really tasty. For that price I would expect that the french fries are included, but you also need to order it extra. We ordered some starters, one burrata and 5 cherry tomatos = 12.50EUR!!! at least serve it with some toast bread or fresh basilicum... I think they have a lot more potential than just overcharge for very very basic things.

Nice corner bar with a great view over the utrechtsestraat. Service is friendly and the menu has a variety of choices. We had soup which was amazing and I also like that their sandwiches are made with sourdough. The stairs are quite steep so not really an option for people that are not that good on their feet.

We zouden een broodje hamburger gaan eten bij ter Marsch in de Vijzelstraat. Helaas was die gesloten. Maar geen nood, bij van Leeuwen hadden ze ook een superlekker broodje hamburger. Patatjes en een IJwit erbij en het feest was compleet. We zaten eerst aan een tafeltje met recht uitzit op een 'krul'. Gelukkig kwam er snel een andere tafel vrij. Plassende mannen tijdens het eten is toch niet zo smakelijk. Verder, helemaal prima!

Iced coffee was pretty solid. Got the brioche chicken sandwich - very fresh ingredients, but needed more dressing/sauce. Service was not the best - had to grab our own menus 10 minutes after asking for some and waited 20 minutes to even order. May be due to only 1 guy working.

"If you don't like the way we do things you can leave." - Actual words from a woman working there. Unbelievably bad service. Avoid this place if you're a tourist or english speaker, they'll treat you poorly - I've seen it happen. Many other bars and cafes in the area with decent customer service. Give your money to them instead.

De broodjes en de wentelteefjes waren van buitengewone kwaliteit. Vers, goede porties en heerlijk van smaak. Echt een aanrader!

Really nice location by the water, great to eat outside on a sunny day We had club sandwich & beef burger. Both were delicious but the chips are exceptional. Maybe some English diners would consider the burger undercooked, but for a confirmed carnivore it was perfect, and very juicy. Strongly recommend

Amazing food, clean environment and really nice and cozy vibes. Coming from North America it’s really nice to see some places like this here.

The sharing plate of bitterballen, cheese sticks and spring rolls was very tasty. Really enjoyed. Unfortunately the staff we’re not as nice. They were clearly not happy we didn’t order more food than this and they charged us 5euro for a basket of bread that we only assumed was complimentary

Stayed at a hotel nearby for 5 nights. Had a beautiful breakfast here every morning watching the world go by. Koffie was spectacular and the ambience was superb. Honestly a highlight of my trip.

Super gezellig if one manage to get upstairs. Often very crowded and the upstairs room is often booked for some private event. Beer there is quite nice and staff is usually very friendly. Nice tables outside in summer and a good choice of food (mainly bites tried)

Very rude service. The waiter couldn’t take 5 seconds of his time to explain there is no drinks menu but decided a rude no before walking off was how customer service should be handled. Smells a bit dirty as well like beer has been curating the wood for a decade.

Gezellig café waar je de hele dag door kunt eten. Alleen om 11.00 uur waren de croissants op... de bakker zit er tegenover. Haal daar even een paar dan was het geregeld. De pannenkoeken als ontbijt waren trouwens heerlijk.

Great location, terrible service. Orders arrive incomplete, staff refuse to check, after an hour the final order arrives with most of the group finished. Order was not complete and the staff arrogantly blamed the client.

Ongeïnteresseerde dame achter de bar. Er staan een aantal goede wijnen open maar pas op want deze zouden zomaar eens een dag of 2 te lang open kunnen staan.

Fijn terras in hartje Amsterdam. Prima wijnkaart en borrel happen. Bovendien heb je hier in het voorjaar tot in de late uurtjes zon op het terras!

Cute little bar with jazz @ 8pm on Sundays. Only gripe was that the staff was more interested in serving themselves & their friends, than others.

Super personeel en heerlijke vegetarische Croque-monsieur met geroosterde paprika en courgette. Heel jammer dat er onaangekondigd wasabi opzat.

Ondanks het slechte weer hadden we een prima plek op het terras, vriendelijke bediening en goed personeel. De Friet Rendang is aan te raden!
