This is a really difficult review to write, as this is a lovely branch of my favourite coffee shop chain - but there's a VERY big problem. The problem is that the manager is one of the rudest, most unpleasant people I've ever come across within a retail environment (bloke in his thirties or forties, quite large build). He is rude, bordering on aggressive to customers - I just ordered an apple and cinnamon and he barked at me, without any sort of politeness - and he treats his staff like dirt, and makes no effort to conceal this from customers either (again, just watched him bark orders aggressively at two staff members). This was not the first time I've seen this. I've seen it three or four times now, and it's to the point where I can no longer write it off as him having a bad day - I had to raise it somewhere. Perhaps this isn't the best forum, but if it goes someway to him treating people - staff and customers alike - with a little respect and decency then it's worthwhile. That aside, the other staff are really lovely, and the drinks are consistently great.
Used to love going here. Today's experience not good. Firstly there was a sign to say short staffed so looking at the que, I knew it would be a wait. Took my mum and daughter downstairs and found a seat. Then qued up. In came a group of loud teens swearing at the top of their voices everyone looked including staff but nothing said. Was told take out cups only but you could still sit in. Ordered food and collected drinks. Sat down to wait for food. Downstairs came the teens to use the toilet. With door wide open shouting and swearing. Saying how drunk they were, all underage. One standing in door to toilet shouting need tampon for one clearly on the toilet for all of us to see. Staff member came halfway down to shout to be quiet then retreated. They carried on. Surely there should be security in gracechurch? Food then came in paper bags cheese had stuck to bags and for mushroom ementle it was all cheese with grated mushroom. The drinks were lovely but that was all that was good about the whole experience.

Nice store its spacious and feels welcoming. It's a shame there was so many tables that hadn't been cleared as it has the ability to have a great first impression. I moved some items to sit down and it took over 50 minutes for them to be cleared even though the store was quiet and there were people working, no-one checked down the back of the store. I felt the staff were lacking in customer service skills as when I walked in there were 2 people behind the counter and one person in the queue being served. When the person on the till finished serving the person in front of me she turned away ignoring me and walked off, it took a long time to even be acknowledged (and then that was by the man on the machine, who was good). The hot chocolate was not very chocolatey AT ALL and could easily pass as coloured milk, i don't know whether they're saving money by not putting enough chocolate powder in, maybe the other drinks are better. All in all I was disappointed. 2* as I like the fixtures and fittings/ambience was nice and the man that served me was lovely.
never usually do a bad review but this afternoon was highly embarrassing for me. I went to go pay for my order and the woman with glasses was making a loud fuss about how my transaction hadnt of gone through several times. I could see by the card machine that it was the internet service that was down and she was persistently saying how i basically didn’t have the money in my account with a huge que hearing in. I went across the road to cafe Nero just for them to reassure me the internet was down and it wasn’t my fault. Please teach your staff how to deal with these situations as it made me feel embarrassed. Thankyou to the younger gentleman that came over and tried to tell her that it was the internet and not my fault. I don’t think I will be returning

The only good things about this place is the coffee and the extra space downstairs. The manager seems pleasant, but there never seems to be any food. We went there 1 week before Christmas on a Sunday at 1pm and no food left whatsoever. This can also happen mid week. The cakes are not appetizing to look at and are very dry tasting. Queues are a nightmare as well. Dont know what takes so long. We go to Costa as well, but my husband prefers coffee #1 so we take it in turns where we go, but most times we go back to Costa due to no food and queues that take way too long. They are also in serious need of a dumb waiter as a lot of the tables downstairs are constantly full of dirty cups and plates. The trays also seem really heavy for staff to carry back upstairs.
Male server was extremely rude, asked if they had toast he just said "nope" with no smile or offer of anything else. Looked absolutely miserable and like wanted to be anywhere else but serving. The place was filthy and all I heard were the staff chatting loudly the whole place felt more like a seemed like a free drop in centre than a cafe. Also decor showing its age just a bad experience plenty of other coffee places in the area. I'd give no stars if I could.

I met a friend whom I hadn't seen since before covid 19 outbreak and another friend. It was great sitting in Coffee#1 as government guidelines were followed. We had cheese cake and large latte coffee. The coffees were to our liking. We thought that the cheese cake was nicely presented- wow. In a well presented box. Everything was disposable. I was impressed. The cheese cake was tasty and rich. We stayed for a couple of hours. And talked a lot. The atmosphere was good. We will definitely go back to have good coffee and some thing to nibble on whilst catching up on the latest.
As a visitor to Sutton this branch needs a bit of a clean & staff need to brighten up with their approach. Talking excessively 2gether & not attentive. Saucer was dirty & also had milk & sprinkles on it. When I asked politely for another, almost as dirty and badly worn was banged down without a word. A glass on the drinking water table had a shred of old lettuce dangling! Tables dirty & not cleared. Always nice previously, needs a shake up!!

Just when you thought Sutton Town Centre had reached coffee bar overload, another one opens ;-) Happily, it was clearly a much needed addition, as I had to queue up for about ten minutes to get served - it was that busy. Granted, it was lunchtime. They've done a splendid job of transforming the place, both at ground level and the lower level, which I don't think people have discovered yet. Took advantage of this fact, and sat down there to enjoy my cup of flat white in relative peace. Have a feeling that's not going to last..
The staff are really friendly and so helpful, especially with helping my disabled father. The food is good and the drinks are really nice. Cheaper than Costa or Nero... Plus doggos are allowed!

There's a sloped doorway and outdoor seating, as well as a disabled toilet inside.
Very friendly staff who offer a welcoming greeting and smile upon entry to the building. The staff seemed knowledgeable about the drinks they had to offer - not simply the price, when questioned about the difference between drinks they were able to explain the different processes required. As for the layout and vibe of the location, it offers a relaxing environment where you can feel comfortable completing work, reading a book, or simply taking a moment for yourself. I look forward to returning again in future!
Busy, a little pricey, but the Columbian coffee and tostatas and little custard tarts were excellent... The only reason I marked service down is people were entering and clearing the stuff off the table they wanted to sit at, maybe they need an outstanding KP?

Available, although there is a set of stairs to a separate bit which I didn't see...
Was a bit disappointed, service was slow. I ordered pancakes with blueberries, seeds and maple syrup. When it came to the table I just got pancakes with blueberries and no seed or syrup. I eventually got the syrup but no seeds they were out. I wasn't informed of this when I ordered and I was charged full price. It was also the most expensive of the the toppings which I didn't receive. I won't be coming back. Lovely looking place but not worth the price. The place lacks passion and so do the staff.
Poor experience, cutlery dirty and stained, 2 slices of cake given on the same plate and expected to transfer these onto the second plate provided - making the dessert look a mess and unappealing, got half a cup off coffee instead of a full cup. Very unpleasant experience, won't be coming again any time soon. Nearly £20 for 2 slices of cake and 2 coffees and can't even get clean cutlery and put on own plates. Shameful.

One of my favorite coffee shops loads of seating down stairs as well. My favorite of theirs is gingerbread latte and a slice of carrot cake Unfortunately after 5 years of coming here today was a total let down ,the people behind the counter today had no idea how to make my gingerbread latte (with I took back twice) boiling milk or coffee should never happen .and my friend and her mothers cappuccino was as bad Hopefully this is a first and last time as this was my favourite coffee shop
Food was nice but how they treat their customers are despicable as they kicked two of my friends out.

Kid-friendliness
Me and friends enters this cafe after a tiring exam ready to study our next exam while eating food. But two of our friends weren’t hungry so they just want to study they got kicked out of this place like they were just rubbish being thrown out.
Visited coffee#1 at 9.20am. I ordered plain scone and tea and they had no plain scone. Only 1 slice of wht toast available too? Only 1 member of staff, taking orders, preparing the food and delivering to table. Queue was 6 deep and a long wait. When I did get my 1 slice of toast (as no scone available) my cup was dirty. Felt sorry for the lady on her own. Won't be visiting again. Such a pity, lovely establishment but no staff and no scones!
I ordered a pot of tea and was given a cup with stain marks on, I pointed it out to the batista who apologised and got a new cup. This cup had bits inside it, but was still put on my tray. I told the batista that this wasn't clean either. Batista proceeded to check 6/7 other cups and blamed someone else for them not being clean. They were all put back where they were found and were not put to clean again. Bit of a worry!
I am a regular customer here as the staff are always friendly, give great service and there is a bigger selection of vegan food with relevant items clearly labelled. There are a great selection of vegan cakes etc and non dairy milk alternatives for hot drinks. Plenty of seating, more than other coffee shops in the town centre and always a clean environment. Welcoming, comfortable and enjoyable place to relax.
Could be so much better, but a lack to service care let's it down. I don't mind being up sold too but not telling me it will cost more until the point my wallet is coming out!?!? Tables were not cleared in the time I was in the place. It might be better to have a collection station. Cake was a little dry, especially as it was lemon drizzle. Nothing that can't be fixed but pity it wasn't when I visited!
I am very disappointed with the quality of matcha in this cafe. Actually, it's not matcha, but something too much like milk with green liquid, which is not stirred in any way. I would recommend that the staff get trained to learn how to make this drink, as something is clearly not right. Otherwise, it's best to stop calling it matcha. I really hope that improvements will be made in the near future.
A really nice place for some good coffee. The atmosphere is great and there is a nice vibe going on. I do notice the staff are slightly overworked, with a lot of cups being left for a long time in the downstairs area and the queue taking long to get through! Some staff could use a smile, but most of them are great. All in all, not bad. P.s., the smoothies and fresh juices are lovely.
I Am a student and was a regular at this coffee shop, however due to recent rude staff that seem to hate all students even though we have never done anything to them I will not be returning after racist remarks and unfair treatment that had tried to be resolved but still felt uncomfortable staying in a place that treats people unfairly for whatever reason

The coffee is good. I like the atmosphere. Prices are much the same as any other coffee shop. The service is OK. It's let down by the cleanliness. For example, the section of counter where the staff place your tray before serving is dripping wet with spilt drinks. And the rest of the counter area looks untidy and a bit grubby. Easily sorted but only three stars for now.
Been in twice in the past week. The staff on both occasions have been miserable and rude. Appears they are short staffed but the customer service is zilch. There’s no passion in delivering the food (my cake was literally broken in 4 places) or friendliness which doesn’t make it too appealing. Won’t be visiting again.

This cafe has the ambience of an old fashioned bar; with its long counter, wooden flooring and bare brick walls. The lighting is subtle and the decor is simple and elegant. It's somewhere you actually want to sit and have a coffee; it just feels right. This is a coffee house done correctly. We'll definitely return.

Iced Caramel Latte and Salted Caramel Banoffee Frappuccino
Nice atmosphere - I avoid the other places because they seem way too busy and a little small, this one has nice comfortable seating downstairs so there's always a quiet spot to sit on my laptop. Gluten free food is appreciated but they're practically touching non-gf food so completely useless to anyone with coeliac disease or a genuine intolerance.
The place is very spacious and well decorated with nice wooden floors and brick walls. On the downside, however, over half the tables were littered with used cups, mugs and plates and it was almost an hour and a half before someone deigned to do the rounds to clear up. Also, overrun with pushchairs and mothers using the place as a daycare.
Best americano coffee in Sutton Coldfield, and I'm fussy! The chocolate crunch goes too good with it and must be kept! Always excellent service.

Back from holiday, was told a new cafe had opened. Very disappointed as cuppincino was tasteless, only milk. Talked to staff and advised me to order a strong one next time, willing to change a new one for us, however still nothing better. May be will try one more time, or I'll stick back to my favourite, Nero.
Been here twice now. Not even a massive fan of coffee, but they do the best mocha I have ever tasted. Cakes and sandwiches are lovely and fresh, staff very friendly and cheerful too. I felt very safe in store at the moment, very clean and obviously sticking to guidelines. Will definitely keep coming back!
Considering the current heat wave, I can almost excuse the staff for the slight attitude. However, the cappuccino ( with cinnamon) was really nice. Would revisit

Great coffee. Beautiful layout and decor. Loyalty card option. Selection of sandwiches / panini's and cake. There have a been a couple of times where ingredients haven't been available, and so menu options aren't always available. I also feel this is a little on the pricey side.

Dean, Duty manger was incredibly welcoming upon my visit into Coffee #1. He made sure I received my order in speedy time, clearly this demonstrates his brilliant managerial skills. He was incredibly attentive and friendly an asset to the team.
This store is amazing! the atmosphere is buzzing. However i did wait a while for my drink, but it was worth the wait. this young asian chap made my drink (abul) he was super nice and made my experience feel like it was worth the wait. Great
Having a quick trip out my with mother and father to Sutton Coldfield we thought it a nice idea to have a drink in a coffee shop. As a family we decided to try 'Coffee#1' and went in with high expectations as my sister had talked highly of
I'm in the cafe right now. It's Sunday 3.20 pm so that will probably explain why there are lots of gaps on the sandwich shelves as I suppose they don't want a lot of wastage. How I've only just noticed the place, I don't know as they told
A nice cafe in the town centre. Great friendly service, comfortable seating and a nice atmosphere. There is a very good choice of food and drinks. Hot chocolate was delicious but a cheesecake was even better. Can only recommend this place.
Too noisy today, sqealing child and barking/yappy dog. Nothing against either but just wanted to sit and unwind but 2 high pitched noises didn't allow this. Not staffs fault I suppose but not the place to ho for a quiet'ish coffee …
Coffee good, have seats outside and downstairs . They also give the used coffee grounds away free great for the garden. An added bonus is they let dogs in.

This is how to do coffee. I normally come here if I need some serious caffeine to get my brain working again, but it's a nice place to chill. Very friendly, welcoming, accessible. Also dog friendly if you need that.
#1 coffee I'd never have again. Gave it 2 chances. Latte had no taste and "deluxe" hot chocolate is plain milk. Not even sweet. The only good thing is they always have free tables outside. Not wondering why
Great Coffee and Service. Have been a few times now and always busy. Downstairs seating is also a bonus. Great selection of cakes on offer too. Staff are helpful with recommendations and make you feel welcome.

The offering is standard coffee shop, with marginally better cakes etc. However, this former Burton's has been carefully renovated to create a very comfortable & visually interesting interior.
My second visit to this upmarket nicely decorated coffee shop. Today I went for the advertised and newly promoted oat latte. Not my cup of tea (excuse the pun) and not inexpensive at £3.05.
Good distance between tables but customers queueing for drinks weren't being very sensible. Perhaps they could think about table service? Lovely coffee and sandwich as usual though.
