Columbia University (Columbia; officially Columbia University in the City of New York) is a private Ivy League research university in New York City. Established in 1754 near the Upper West Side region of Manhattan, Columbia is the oldest institution of higher education in New York and the fifth-oldest institution of higher learning in the United States. It is one of nine colonial colleges founded prior to the Declaration of Independence, seven of which belong to the Ivy League. It has been ranked by numerous major education publications as among the top ten universities in the world. Columbia was established as King's College by royal charter of George II of Great Britain in reaction to the founding of Princeton University in New Jersey. It was renamed Columbia College in 1784 following the Revolutionary War and in 1787 was placed under a private board of trustees headed by former students Alexander Hamilton and John Jay. In 1896, the campus was moved from Madison Avenue to its current location in Morningside Heights and renamed Columbia University. Columbia scientists and scholars have played an important role in the development of notable scientific fields and breakthroughs including: brain-computer interface; the laser and maser; nuclear magnetic resonance; the first nuclear pile; the first nuclear fission reaction in the Americas; Thomas Hunt Morgan's drosophila experiment – considered the origin of modern genetics; the first evidence for plate tectonics and continental drift;and much of the initial research and planning of the Manhattan Project during World War II. The Columbia University Physics Department has been affiliated with 33 Nobel Prize winners as alumni, faculty or research staff, the third most of any American institution behind MIT and Harvard. In addition, 22 Nobel Prize winners in Physiology or Medicine have been affiliated with Columbia, the third most of any American institution. The university's research efforts include the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Goddard Institute for Space Studies and accelerator laboratories with major technology firms such as IBM.[28] Columbia is one of the fourteen founding members of the Association of American Universities and was the first school in the United States to grant the M.D. degree.[14][29] The university administers the Pulitzer Prize annually.[30] Columbia is organized into twenty schools, including three undergraduate schools and numerous graduate schools. It maintains research centers outside of the United States known as Columbia Global Centers. In 2019, Columbia's undergraduate acceptance rate was 5.1%, making it one of the most selective colleges in the United States, and the second most selective in the Ivy League after Harvard. Columbia is ranked as the 3rd best university in the United States by U.S. News & World Report behind Princeton and Harvard In athletics, the Lions field varsity teams in 29 sports as a member of the NCAA Division I Ivy League conference. The university's endowment stood at $10.9 billion in 2018, among the largest of any academic institution. As of 2018, Columbia's alumni and affiliates include: five Founding Fathers of the United States — among them an author of the United States Constitution and a co-author of the Declaration of Independence; three U.S. presidents; 29 foreign heads of state; ten Justices of the United States Supreme Court, two of whom currently serve; 96 Nobel laureates; 101 National Academy members;[35] 38 living billionaires; eleven Olympic medalists; 39 Academy Award winners; and 125 Pulitzer Prize recipients.

Excellent college campus in New York City. Columbia University, officially titled as Columbia University in the City of New York, is a private Ivy League research university in New York City. Established in 1754 as King's College on the grounds of Trinity Church in Manhattan, it is the oldest institution of higher education in New York, the fifth-oldest in the United States, and one of nine colonial colleges founded prior to the Declaration of Independence. Columbia was established by royal charter under George II of Great Britain. It was renamed Columbia College in 1784 following the American Revolution, and in 1787 was placed under a private board of trustees headed by former students Alexander Hamilton and John Jay. In 1896, the campus was moved to its current location in Morningside Heights and renamed Columbia University. Columbia scientists and scholars have played a pivotal role in scientific breakthroughs including brain-computer interface; the laser and maser;[9][10] nuclear magnetic resonance; the first nuclear pile; the first nuclear fission reaction in the Americas; the first evidence for plate tectonics and continental drift; and much of the initial research and planning for the Manhattan Project during World War II. Columbia is organized into twenty schools, including four undergraduate schools and 16 graduate schools. The university's research efforts include the Lamont–Doherty Earth Observatory, the Goddard Institute for Space Studies, and accelerator laboratories with Big Tech firms such as Amazon and IBM. Columbia is a founding member of the Association of American Universities and was the first school in the United States to grant the MD degree. The university also annually administers the Pulitzer Prize. With over 15 million volumes, Columbia University Library is the third-largest private research library in the United States. The university's endowment stands at $13.3 billion in 2022, among the largest of any academic institution. Columbia University is a stunning campus that is steeped in history and tradition. From the moment you step onto its grounds, you are struck by the beauty of the architecture and the natural surroundings. The campus is sprawling, with lush green spaces, modern buildings, and historic landmarks. The faculty are world-renowned experts in their fields, and the curriculum is challenging and thought-provoking. The university also provides an abundance of extracurricular activities and resources, including clubs, sports teams, and research programs. One of my favorite aspects of Columbia is its location in New York City. The university is situated in the heart of Manhattan, surrounded by some of the best restaurants, museums, and cultural attractions in the world. It's the perfect place to experience the vibrancy of city life while also pursuing your academic goals. Overall, I highly recommend Columbia University to anyone who is seeking a top-notch education, a supportive community, and a vibrant city experience.

I am a student at Columbia University, specifically with GSAPP. The main campus is a beautiful campus during the summer. It is constructed so that all the buildings provide a “wall” around the campus so that the interior is quiet and separate from the city. The landscaping is always up kept. You see students gathered in green spaces or along the library stairs each day. There are some current construction projects, but they are minor and don’t take away from the Columbia experience. The interior of campus is safe and always monitored by gatekeepers and campus security. As soon as you step off campus it is no longer securities jurisdiction so there are fairly often robberies around the area. Columbias campus alert system does a good job of keeping students up to date on these events. The surroundings of campus include many restaurants, stores, and grocery stores that are very convenient for students and surrounding people. Overall I have always felt safe in the area and love the beauty of the campus.

I’m an outspoken critic against US education. Columbia, Ivy League, and all of prestigious universities are supposed to make promising careers for all students. These students were supposed to have a successful future. This turned out to be a myth. Ivy League are nothing but corrupt institutes that drove students to insanity. They don’t care about student problems. All they do to is to get away from suicides; they do this to protect their image. I’m not discouraging people from attending Columbia. I’m convincing them not to apply unless they have outstanding records in school marks, SATs and extra activities. Also they have to be confident at handling rigourous course work. This is not a joke.

I’m an applicant to Columbia University 2019-2020! I had very great experience with an interviewer as well as campus tours. The history of this university is interesting and motivating you to new beginnings! Even if I would be rejected, thank you Columbia for all experience I gained through my lifetime as conferences and great professors speeches! Looking forward to coming over to your campus as soon as possible to get new motivation for my entire life! Thank you!

Columbia University is absolutely incredible & I will never grow tired of visiting this campus. It’s a gem in the heart of New York City. I’ve had the privilege of coming to Columbia a few times through the years, and I think I only fall in love with this place more each time I emerge from the 116th Street subway station. If you’re contemplating checking it out, don’t think twice! I have to say, the autumn months are particularly lovely (as pictured).

  • Tonya

We went for a campus tour and I loved the campus. Although it was cold and snowing, the snow on the trees was lovely and the buildings looked so majestic. I liked that the campus was like its own world...when you enter the gates it's almost like you're not in New York anymore. The tour was organized into small groups depending on what major you were interested in. The guides were friendly and knowledgeable and the presentation was very informative.

Columbia University is a great, big and beautiful campus. Whenever I go to this University, I always admire the architecture of the buildings and the many art pieces such as the statue of the Lion in front of the Havemayer building. I also see many other people engaged in different activities such as playing music, games or just relaxing on the grass on the warm summer days. This campus has a good energy and it ambient just relaxed me.

Columbia University is one of the ivy league schools located in the heart center of NYC with historic landmark buildings like Butler Library, Low Memorial Library, Earl Hall, St.Paul Chapel and other interesting sites around the Morningside campus like Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine. It is also one of the oldest universities in US. Enjoy walking in and around the university or relax on the grounds or library stairs.

Always great to walk through on my way to and from work for over 18 plus years. Always clean. I am glad to see the college students back. I cross paths everyday with a future Doctor, Lawyer, possibly President of America or a big company, etc. I love to see the joy in the eyes of all the youth that are inspiring to be something of great worth to our society. ‍♀️

  • Carlo N.

Beautiful and huge campus. I had good memories as a student many moons ago. It is one of the top tier university in the States and in NYC. It’s one of the Ivy league schools and one of the oldest academic institution in the country. They have the largest endowment in NY state. Acceptance rate is very, very competitive. Tuition is very, very expensive.

Columbia University is among the top in the US, with scholars and students coming in from all over the world. Their main campus is on Broadway & 116 street. An impressive space with old buildings and a park in the middle. I haven't studied here, but auditet some classes in music. They also give concerts and arranger public lectures by famous speakers.

  • Ianos Ortega

Working almost every day with the College, is a good experience since you get to meet students from all over the world, and interact with them, very nice kids well educated and good manner, allways willing to help us in anything with need like open doors where we need a key with don't have, buy they know us. Bravo.... nice environment

  • Ravinder Singh

A historic Ivy League university doesn't need a visitor's review. I just had seen pictures of friends who have studied or visited over the years and so wanted to see it at some point. Finally got a chance to do that while coming back home from NYC and we stopped for 20 minutes or so. I wanted my son to see it and it was a great feeling being there.

  • Kara Thrace

The campus is small relative to the other's I've seen on the West Coast, but it's still a beautiful little place. It's got a posh intellectual vibe, which makes sense considering the wealthy students who attend. It's up pretty far north (generally crime gets worse above 101 in Manhattan) so don't go wandering up past campus grounds.

  • Hassan ebrahim

I loved everyone I met in there. Students and staff are some of the greatest people I met in my life. Dealing with them taught me a lot about how to respect the differences between us and accept everybody equally regardless what they do or believe. Thank you Columbia for letting me experience this great life changing experience.

  • Nicolas Tenoux

One of the best University in the world. The campus is wonderful and located in a beautiful part of New York. Highly renowned in economy, banking, etc. It is now possible to enjoy online courses throughout Coursera website. It will give you the opportunity to enhance your skills, knowledge and earn a Certificate as well.

  • Jack H

Quiet over the Christmas break but nonetheless a great sight to see. Just being in a university of it's statue was impressive enough but for them to leave building open to the public was a real treat. There wasn't much around in the way of food, or help getting around but the signage is more then enough.

  • John Z

Beautiful campus in uppertown of Manhattan. Comparing with other school, Columbia University campus is small so you can finish the campus tour in 1-2 hours by foot. Currently under pandemic, you can not go to inside of the library. Also multiple tents are set up for students to use temporarily.

  • ITTIPAT PRAPAPRASERT

The principal point of interest is the main courtyard. In the northern half, you'll find the statue of the open-armed Alma Mater seated before the Low Memorial Library. On the easter end of College Walk is Hamilton Hall, a key site during the famous student uprising of 1968.

  • Megan Mei Lam

It's an amazing university. You get both the city life and the seclusion of a college campus. It's a gorgeous place to visit and it's even more beautiful when you're there around the winter. I recommend traveling and spending and afternoon in the upper west side area.

  • Just A guy

Does it really needs to be introduced? One of the best school that the world has. Beautiful, beautiful campus. Many stores around that covers almost every aspect of life... Just, check it out. Only if to just sit on the grass here... Your gpa will rise a 0.5 for sure.

Great campus with such an inviting ambiance. The buildings have the classic feel of Victorian architecture that is a common theme of many of the Ivy leagues.

Beautiful and historical campus. In summer, the atmosphere is very good but most cafeterias are closed. So, people are forced to find food from outside.
