This is in reference to the Compare foods on the corner of N.Sharon Amity and Milton Rd. Having been a long standing customer of over 2 1/2 yrs, I was extremely surprised and and appalled by my treatment this past Saturday on April 21st at approximately 10:30 am. I am a disabled veteran and on occasion I go to Octapharmaplasma, which is located in the same shopping center. The money that I earn from my plasma donations is extremely helpful and useful. On the aforementioned date and time, I attempted to purchase 2packs of cigarettes with my debit card. I always check my balance prior to making any type of purchase; this way I know exactly how much I can spend and/or get some cash back if needed. To reiterate, I have been a good customer here for over 2 1/2 yrs. Immediately there was a problem with my debit card, I was told to see the cashier who told me that I had insufficient funds which I knew was not the case. She refused to give me the 2packs of cigarettes, even though the money had already been deducted from my debit card, upon trying it again with one pack of cigarettes, I was told again that the purchase had been declined again for insufficient even though the money was deducted from my account again; a total of over 17 dollars was deducted from my account. They refused to give me the cigarettes and refused to reimburse me. This was in the customer service section no less. I was told repeatedly that my card would replace it on Monday. I asked numerous times why this would occur. They said it happens all of the time with these debit cards. I was becoming increasingly annoyed with her tone and attitude. They debited my card, took my money and refused to give me the items that I had paid for. Really?!?. The customer service manager had the audacity to tell me to my face that; you people cause problems all the time. I don't know if the "you people" reference referred to customers in general, or customers that were other than Latino. I found this extremely offensive, especially coming from a minority owned business that I've patronized for over 2 1/2 yrs. The situation was eventually resolved favorably; approximately 6 weeks later. If you took the time to read this post, please take a 1/2 second and click like. Thank you.

What can I tell you about compare foods? Well having been a customer I can tell you quite a bit. Compare foods claims to be inexpensive compared to other grocery stores, its right there in the name but its not true. Compare foods overcharges for anything possible because there customers won't go elsewhere. To get deeper into that problem we'd have to break down what type of people shop here (me included. I'm not getting into that, that's not the point. Moving on, compare foods is severely understaffed, you'll be in line for awhile no matter what because there's probably only 1 line open. When it does get full you'll hate this even more, they'll open a whole 3 lines for what seems like 40 people all with groceries pouring out of there carts. But you only have a few items, maybe you came in for a cold drink or you just needed some eggs and milk well too bad. They don't have a special line for people with 20 items or less, even though they have 5 unopen lines (they never open more than 3). And then you see the heartbreaking light indicated that the line is open go out..that means you have to find a new line. As soon as that light comes on the cashier finishes there customer and the rest have to jump in the back of an already long line. No warning or anything. Enjoy it on empty day or you know, shop somewhere cheaper, better staffed and not ran by lazy people.

Good place for your grocery needs if you are looking for ethnic items or foods from other country. It is also a good place to seek for seafood. For fresh fruits and vegetables, this place is quite good. For other grocery needs, this place is just decent as for most items the price is higher than other place. The place is not very clean. It is not dirty, but it is not clean either. The parking for this place is quite small, a large parking lot is nearby but the condition is quite bad. At times, the place is quite dodgy as some questionable characters such as drunken or people that are high on drugs are hanging out near the entrance of the place. Nothing too serious for this part of Charlotte.

  • Gedd Head

Very nice produce section. They have just about anything you can possibly need in regards to veggies. Deep selection of ethnic foods and one aisle has nothing but various kinds of beans. The meat section is smaller but has anything you would need from sausage and goat meat to steak and lots of others. I would definitely recommend this place especially if you need certain kinds of meats and their deep produce section alone. And of course they have everything else a typical grocery store has. It leans heavy towards the Spanish and other ethnic races and specializes in that line of products

  • Amy Vinson

Great produce selection! They also carry cuts of meats that you wouldn't necessarily find in other stores. You can purchase different types of seafood also. They also have an extensive selection of shelved items. This Compare has a bakery that makes tasty cookies, breads, pastries and cakes. There is also a check cashing service, a money transfer service and a jeweler in-store. Outside there are a couple of lunch trucks selling tacos, tortas and other types of food. Overall this is a good place to shop but their prices can be a little higher than other stores for their shelved items.

  • Kelle Pressley

I love being able to get culturally diverse food in a clean an well.lit space.i have been going to Compare foods for years. May it be the Sugar Creek store or the one off Milton Rd. I have never had a bad shopping experience and everything that I ever seemed was procured there. So yes the selection is fantastic. I just don't care for that strange smell coming from that meat area. It's enough to rush me on through the store whenever I smell it. I immediately recall why I don't shop there on the regular.

Texan here …… so we got some bread from their bread department ….being from Texas we just put the bread in a bag and kept on shopping….their manager fr fr came to us when we tried to pay for the bread up front and told us there was no way we could buy the bread and snatched the bag away ! LIKE WHAT ??? Ive worked at a grocery store in the past and there was multiple ways to ring up an item ………..This store is a joke , it also stinks like stale cheese all the time . This place is whack

No security, self check out assistant is too busy flirting with a group of guys to even realized I needed help. One entry blocked by a bunch of dudes she's flirting with, same guys went to my parking spot and started threatening me. Don't think I'll come back to this location anymore. Don't feel safe when even the people inside don't care if you're getting threatened with racial slurs thrown. I know enough Spanish to know what was said to me. You guys could do better than this.

  • Brittany Linder

I like this market. Their seasonings are a little pricey but the prices of their meats are reasonable. They have a large variety of meats some that I haven't even seen in Philadelphia. What i like is that you don't have to go to a meat counter and ask them to weigh out a certain amount of meat. Everything is fresh and already weighed, packaged and priced. The store is always clean and well organized and recovered better than most supermarkets and retail stores I've been to.

  • Johanna Espino

I love compare foods but this one is not the best. The only good thing about this place is their employees. The place is so cold that you feel uncomfortable shopping, the meat tent to be bad, the chicken if you don’t cook it right away spect it to be rotten pretty soon. Rats and roaches can be spotted if you go late night. I guess is because the building is very old maybe. The food selection is awesome and you can find almost everything.

  • Kevin Garcia

I like this store as well as their other locations throughout Charlotte. They have a wide selection of mostly Hispanic foods and household items. The prices can be kind of high compared to other grocery stores but the produce and meats are always very fresh and they also sell premarinated meat as well. I wouldn't do my weekly grocery shopping here but they have some things you can't get at a traditional grocery store.

  • El Guero

I worked here. The rats chewed the wiring out of a new stove overnight. If you eat something from here... Prithee it be canned and the can sanitized properly beforehand. Dont even get me started how the snooty dominican management treats mexicans and central americans in their employ. Plus their "top flite" thug security is as rude as can be. Nice idea but poorly executed. Try harder.

  • Eva T

I find this is a place to go to, for specific stuff, otherwise it's kind of expensive, asparagus $5.99, oxtail $9.99, Food lion will be better for everyday stuff. I search for flour for arepas and only one girl knew what I was referring to! And they only had one brand, unknown to me. And it was work to get them to help me. I understand other locations may be better.

  • Assah

Now one of the most expensive store to go to. I was at the one on North Tryon today and a gallon of milk cost $6.50 Like why Almost everything is very expensive. When i go to those clean white neighborhood stores like Publix I spend less for more. Only minorities shop at compare foods and it’s just wrong to rip us off. STOP STEALING FROM MINORITIES!!!

  • Arthur Jackson

You can purchase whole pigs here for roasting. The pig I got was shipped from Miami, so it was frozen when I got it (thaw in COLD water overnight). Be careful how you order it. If you order a 40lb pig, you'll get a MINIMUM 40lb pig. It can be a $30 difference between a 40lb and 49lb pig. You'll have to order in advance as well. Happy Roasting!

  • K Ream

A little more expensive on some of there items but overall a great store with a large variety especially meats, veggies and Spanish cuisine! It’s very cold inside store no matter the temp outside so maybe bring a jacket along with you to shop. Also I seen bill pay, check cashing, cell phone sales and pay as well as a nice jewelry counter.

  • M Richardson

I like fresh fruits and veggies. But, it's usually hard to find a good variety to introduce to the family. I love this particular compare location because it never lets me down in the area of variety. I live an hour 15 minutes away from the store, but I make a point to come here, has at least four other compares, at least once per month.

  • Enzo The Baker

I just had to throw away 2 pounds of beef that I purchased one day ago because it turned grey and smelled foul. If you shop here do not buy any meat products and if you're buying anything else double check expiration dates, make sure they haven't been tampered with. I wonder how the health department still allows this place to operate.

  • Aquilla Fitts

Denise was very rude. She got upset that I asked for a price to be checked. Then after she charged me twice for an item I told her she rang it up already once she rolled her eyes and said “this lady about to get on my nerves” she may have been having a bad day but she was not giving a customer quality service that keeps her at work.

  • Daniel Howard

Huge selection of fresh produce that is much more affordable than the brand name stores. The international variety here is fantastic and the staff are very friendly and helpful. There is plenty of parking and it's feels very safe. This is my favorite place to get marinated meats, peppers, and cactus... and stuff for a big gathering.

  • Stat Haven

OMG I love the morning staff here. Always has bright smiling faces. This is one very hard working crew here. The managers are very respectful and they always have everything restocked for the next day. I'm very to happy to be among an amazing group here at Tryon Street. Sincerely Loss Prevention Officer Tony!!! …

  • Max Tajabadi

I really like the fact that almost all the fruit and vegetables are loose and they are cheaper compared to other places. I also believe they are fresher and healthier. The other parts of the supermarket I really liked were the fish and baking sections. You can ask to clean or fillet fresh fish and the baked goods are so good.

  • Honey Dip

The meats looked old and everything was so expensive. The employees are rude. When you ask for help they ignore you. I will never shop there again. I went to the Asian market and got better service and got everything I needed at a reasonable price. Oh and their meats was fresh and not gray.

  • kkhggg williams

Love this place!. Since shopping here I'm able to keep food on the table for my kids. The meats and can goods are the best ever. Just to know my kids can eat every meal every day is heart warming not having to skip a meal. Blessings to the owners and workers. Helping to keep America great!

  • H B

Good prices on meats. But once you get the meat home, you can smell whatever is going on with them. Meat should not smell bad if you leave it in the refrigerator for a few hours. Meat should not smell bad when you take it out of the pack coming in from the store. Something isn't right....

  • Jamil Leon

Well, I have to rate them a one star because of their expired items. This is not the first time I’ve seen something like that. I told the manager and I handed her a can of condensed milk and she just said “oh let me check” But whatever, they just don’t care. Today’s date: Jan-08-2020

  • Theo Gordon

Stood at the seafood counter for 10 min with them just looking at me, I asked if anyone serving the guy told me no lol I’m like Waite so you just have the seafood here for show. Only thing they have exactly what I wanted to buy bulk load of seafood but I still left for somewhere els.

  • Darinka Rodriguez

I dont like coming here, there is always a strong foul smell in parking lot, not to mention to hope not to get hit on, produce section is always crowded and can barely make it if u have a cart. I rather go to the sharon amd milton rd location which is bigger and cleaner.

  • Dayra H

I could find some things from my country but the prices are very high and I bought Bonyurts and they are damaged, fermented and smell bad, the expiration date says 20 oct 2019 but that is already expired. I hope that the other things I bought are not also damaged …

  • Dave Kaminsky

Fantastic selection of Latino and Central/ South American groceries & specialty items. Specific and wide-ranging cuts of meat, and nice variety of fruits and vegetables. Wish they had American garlic, instead of imported from China...and there are zero organic options.

  • Carol K

Excellent place to shop. The produce is in abundance and always fresh. I also like the different choices of different meats, spices and the list goes on. Employees are polite and knowledgeable. This is my go-to place for produce and international foods. 5 Stars!!

  • Natalie Joseph

I love shopping at Compare Food because I can find food from my Homeland and the associates are helpful even if they don't speak English as a first language. They are always cleaning and restocking the produce section and I love the fact am getting fresh produce.

  • John Dorney

I love shopping here. The isles are a bit tight but they have selections like no other store I've ever been too. The meat counters have every conceivable kind of meats for every ethnicity. They make dinner planning so tough due to the unlimited choices.

  • Zetopia Robinson

I can't believe how cold it was in this store today..i spent 15 mins in there and my nose was literally running when I left out...i had to turn my heat and seat warmers on before I drove off I was so cold.. and the cashiers had on coats (true story)

  • Vernell Steed

I have been shopping at compare for year's,way back when it used to be called, park n shop but personally I feel a bit uncomfortable shopping at this particular store, they are not friendly at all,not to African Americans, lets Tell the truth people!!

  • Vern Charley

I find EVERYTHING I'm shopping for here.. All my fresh Fruits & Vegetables, Healthy juices, other goodies also, and the prices are very reasonable.. The employees, inside & outside, are polite, helpful, and kind to all shoppers..!! BLESSINGS..

  • Hope Nelson

Just drive all the way from another state to visit and this man let another women in and a man but told me they were closed. I personally will never shop here it’s the Hollidays, I was grabbing something because I’ve been on the road all day.

  • v Al

Found what I was looking for. However there was no bagger and the cashier did not bag our food we did it ourselves. In the meAn time you have baggers talking with the cashiers in the other lines and no they had no customers on there register.

  • chandra b

They have a lot of hard to find items such as soft jelly coconuts, island fruit, wide variety of seafood ( check freshness), they also sell herbs and a variety of fresh greens. Caters to South American and Caribbean customers.

  • Rachel Howze

Love the produce and variety at this store. The food trucks outside always have fresh, authentic tacos. Great sweet breads section and delicious tres leches cakes. Wish the produce prices were a bit more reasonable.

  • Chris Manns

Meat and produce are really nice with reasonable prices....canned and boxed goods are on the pricey side One other thing when is the Concord Store on route 29 going to open??? OMG im waiting and waiting???

  • ir w

former park and shop store. very old and compact hard to shop at since the aisles are narrow. They just need to start all over by rebuilding the store. African american manager treats the customer wrong

  • Diana Diaz

I found here several items that couldn't find at any other store in the city. I'm talking about hispanic food, huge variety of products, I love it. Place was really clean and staff helpful and friendly.

  • Nicky BellJes

I don’t think they don’t know if some products from the produce department are bad and should be checked periodically to see if still need to be on the shelf, for instance: Avocado, yuka and Yarms.

  • Noe Salas

Worst place to go shopping theirs a guy that try to assault me also the so call loss prevention guy didnt do nothing guess why? Cause im not african like the guy that was threatening me …

  • Queen of the vibez 36

  • joyce mathews

This was the only store open on Christmas. Found everything we needed to throw an impromptu dinner together. Not as much of a selection as your bigger grocery stores but it had what we needed

  • stonedela

They never dress the tilapia I buy from their fresh produce section even though I indicated that it should be dressed. All they do is to cut the tilapia into pieces but not remove the fins

  • Angela Munoz

Don't waste your money there. We got there Beef Skirt Steak and it was disgusting, called and talked to the manager Jesus Gonzalez and the costumer service was very poor! Never again!!!

  • Selina Jones

Very friendly staff and knowledgeable about all products and their location in store. Beautiful meats and produce. Prices reflect current market prices yet in abundance per package.

  • KING SELT

Smells and the no good customer service. And some items are expensive. Rather go to Walmart.oh and the bakery is ran by nasty dirty women. Please do not by any bake goods there.

  • Diana Cruz

there quality of meat has gone down! this is usually where i go to get all my meat but not going anymore. i spent $165 in meat and most if it was rotten and smelled HORRIBLE!

  • srikant chakravorty

Cheap, fresh, diverse products and friendly staff. What else do you need. Just one star less of perfection due to the smell which bothers me every time I am at Compare Foods.

  • Umesh Jain

This place has lot of varieties in fruits and vegetables section when compared to other grocery stores. It's recommended to carry ID proof if you are paying with credit card.

It's a decent store, kinda cramped though, and the seafood section usually is extra ripe smelling, always crowded but the lines move really quickly
