I have 2 recent instances where I have to praise the consulate officials. My spouse's passport was expired and we applied to renew along with a request to split the given names which i am sure many have encountered. We were really amazed how smoothly the process went through and we got the passport back in just 16 days including the from & to transit time.!! Excellent service. On the other hand, my passport re-issuance with change in personal particulars took a long time to complete. I was in the same boat like many of you. I did follow up multiple times. Finally I got a call from the consulate saying that it's approved now. The lady official who called me back was very professional in explaining me what the process was and why it took so long. It made sense especially due to the pandemic situation and the number of steps involved in unusual cases. The official who called me was thanking me for being patient on all the communications I sent. Overall it was a good experience with the consulate and I appreciate the help.! One thing I have to mention here is that vfs has issues with how they communicate. There is definitely gap in their process and need to improve. When the consulate handed over the passport to vfs, I got an automated message saying that my passport will be shipped back using the shipping method I chose at the time of applying, and FedEx tracking information will be sent. A day later I got an email asking to confirm my address, I did. But did not get any tracking or any other notification. The next day evening FedEx delivered the package!!!! It was standard overnight service. But one would appreciate a tracking update or any other notification to inform its on the way!!

I would have given 0 star if there was an option for that. I have had several bad experiences in the past but still I trusted some of these reviews which said that the staff there had changed. But today I learned that nothing changed and I doubt the credibility of these reviews. I don’t understand how Indian Consulate in NY always gets the worst staff. Most of them are very rude, especially the lady I spoke over the phone today. Whenever I had to call the office, this was my experience. Not only over the phone, I felt the same when I had to go there too. Their attitude destroys my sanity. I got an email from VFS regarding my pending application asking me to contact Consular Office. When I contacted them, even without hearing my concern completely, the lady told very rudely, “If you received email from VFS, you contact VFS.. we don’t have your application”. The email clearly stated that Indian Consular is requesting additional documents and you contact them directly with any queries. I had to literally loose my temper to get my point through and still she didn’t want to help and just got rid of me providing an email which had nothing to do with it. Shame on this agency!

I send all the documents for poa as per they given their website. Because when i call them they are not giving the instructions or not even listening me. And once i send all my documents i got message from fedex that they got it but when i check with my reference number in their site for pramit they were not updated . They just showing application not submitted to counsel. So i called them asked about it and they were not telling about my application and the way talked to me was very rude. Even i emailed them but they just replied me telling please allow 5 to bussiness day. But after 8 days they returned my documents with my return envelope that i send along with my documents that they need something else with that which is not even include in the documents required that i saw in website. Atleast they can call me or email me telling that. They waisted my time my money and they send back without notarizing it telling a document that they didnt even add their website . Worst experience when i call them too.

They have two locations consult general of India and vfs. Consulate general of India gives token for miscellaneous services it’s mentioned in their walk-in kiosks and when you get to counter .till than you have to wait they will tell you that they don’t provide this service you have to go to vfs and vfs tell you that you have to go consulate general of india literally they have paper print of each other office address very irritating people work there and no responsibility of there their work three people was there while I was there they have pull their hair to make this people under Stand their point and staff was acting like nothing happened. Hope one day they will take responsibility for their service and make people life easy rather then making it hell. Consult general of India it’s not Ada complaint just let you know if you have anyone handicapped or older in your family they need assistance.

I visited the embassy to get GPA/POA attested. The process was clean, simple and quicker than I expected Process - Gather the documents mentioned in the section, try to fill the application and pay the fees online. When you reach the embassy, it clearly indicates the embassy offices are down the stairs. The downstairs gates are opened at 9 AM and processing starts at 9:30. There is a waiting area but phones have to be locked away. As soon as you enter the waiting area, check in using three the portals on your left. Filling in your name and reason for visit generates a token. The documents are verified at the counter when you token is called. Attested documents can be picked up at 4pm

Do not believe any bad reviews you read around, the staff has changed and these new people are the kindest and most helpful Indians I ever met. The staff is literally spending so much energy to explain simple concepts to people, as we Indians have a habit of repeating the same question expecting a different answer- the staff here is so classy, they patiently kept explaining to at least 4 people while I was waiting. They spend so much of their energy I would’ve lost my patience! Love and best wishes to my Indian consulate staff! Very clean and hygienic restrooms too. Indian classiness at its best. Got me emotional and I miss my parents. Let’s throw a Jai Hind in too

Big shout out to the staff for going out of the way to help! We had to get my wife's parents' death certificates attested and in all honestly, I was not expecting much help from the staff. I was obviously influenced by the negative reviews. However, the staff not only went out of the way to help but, also delivered the docs quickly. The staff was really friendly, courteous and sympathetic. As they say, everything flows from the top to the bottom and therefore, we must also give credit to the leadership team at the consulate for ensuring that NRIs receive an exemplary experience at the consulate. Thanks a lot for the timely help. God Bless You ! Jai Hind !

My passport renewal took almost 6 weeks. There is no processing for almost 5 weeks because they are not able to find my district as the new government changed the district names (technical issues). I am not sure what's going on and also, I have an upcoming travel to India just in one week. So, I raised a query via PRAMIT. One of the representative called and explained me what's going on and updated the application with the new district details. It took only two days for them to complete the process. I got my passport in time for India trip. Thank you New York embassy team for resolving my case ASAP. Appreciate the consulate for the excellent service!

I renewed my passport along with change in place of birth through the Consulate of India in New York. I forgot to include the affidavit for change in place of birth, Indian consulate reached out to me over the phone/email and asked to provide the affidavit. I must commend the Consulate for the excellent service it offered during this process. They were quick to respond to queries through the PRAMIT service, and the support of the Consulate in general was very efficient. I received my passport well in time. And overall, it was a smooth experience. Thank you.

Pathetic service. For one or another reason they would reject your application and every time will give you a new reason for rejection. The irony is that they are representing the Govt system and there is no alternative options of them, so you are on there mercy to get lucky to get your documents accepted. If you have to keep rejecting the documents, then be respectful of others time and provide all rejection reason at one time. There is no need for rejecting the applicant with new reason every time. Is it money making process for you people?

Very Good Service....I arrived 2 mins late since I travel from NJ. the ladies behind the counter was really very nice people & very helpful. They also have a copier machine on site which we needed for the documents at no charge. One thing I will say to the Readers ,I have seen people get frustrated & don't want to wait at all. Recently I been to US embassy were i have to spend all day in Consulate to renew my passport and it takes time. Please have Passion and be Respectful to the Staff working for us. Namaste. Jai Hind

The words I would use are professional, extremely competent and most of all courteous & compassionate. The experience with the Consul Team was exceptional in every way. The team is clearly upholding a very high standard of utter professionalism and excellent communication skills. They are providing exceptional service to the community and we would like to thank them immensely. Our situation was time sensitive and they did whatever they could staying within the process to help facilitate and we are very very grateful.

Almost 5 months to renew my passport through VFS which sent my application to this consular. The hold up was the police verification- I have never lived in India in my life, but I NEEDED to have someone "vouch" for my existence, for which my relative assisted me. I gave a very old address from my first ever passport which caused a delay. I didn't know of this delay until I messaged this consular multiple times. I would also have to remind them manually by email that the physical police verification was completed.

Had a good experience. Went to get POA documents attested and we were a little late (deadline was 11:30 but we reached at 12 pm) due to NYC traffic but they were understanding and luckily the officer was still at the office and hadn’t left so we were able to get the job done. Although one of the officers kept speaking in Hindi despite us speaking in English and we went along with it because we wanted to get the job done but it would be nice if the embassy people don’t expect South Indians to know Hindi too.

Process is easy to get power of attorney attestation, not crowded. Please note, service is in basement, and Copier available in the basement. Check in kiosk is there, so first come first serve. If you keep your documents as Set A and Set B as mentioned on their kiosk then everything will be done within couple of minutes. You will be asked to switch off the phones and put it in a locker without keys. Would have given 5 star if there’s a safe place to keep our phones.

It feels so safe and reassuring to know that we have a home away from home. The staff here is extremely efficient if the application is submitted properly. Only complain is that your application may get rejected for minor issues and you are not necessarily informed about the rejection. The application rejection can be expensive and time consuming, and wish there can be an option to make changes to your application online before its rejected.

  • Utkarsh Jhala

I was extremely impressed by the friendliness of the staff, cleanliness of the facility and the quality of service! I needed to have copies of my passport and OCI card for what I needed and they had a copier available to make free copies of the documents you needed! Once again, truly grateful and appreciative of the help and assistance provided today! Sahi mein, Mera Desh badal raha hai! Modi hai to Mumkin hai! ❤️

For document collection they need to understand that people will come from different places and most of them wait outside around central park till evening 4:00 PM EST and is horrible and they need to improve that part to communicate in a text message saying that doc is ready for collection. Waiting till till evening 4:00 PM EST is a big pain. Or they can give a mail option by charging courier fee

I attended the Cincinnati, OH Consulate General New York camp just moments ago. My son's appointment time was at 9:30 am. We were greeted when we reached at 9 am and we had a very good reception and we were served fast. There was also notary service at this location available. The entire checking and verification took only 5 to 10 minutes and I got enough time to write review as well.

  • Samyak

An amazing experience !! Best in class service... everything is streamlined... Everything happens as mentioned in the website... If you follow very simple basics you will not only get your work done comfortably but also will feel good about the polite and sweet behavior from the staff. Not sure if the people who complain about delays here, have experienced other offices in NY/NJ...

They are unresponsive, difficult to contact. Been trying to renew indian passport for 8 months- keep rejecting my application. Submitted everything according to the online guidelines. Keep charging fees for each application and rejecting it. My spouse's passport got renewed in 3 weeks with same paperwork but keep rejecting mine. No one helping or listening to me.

This is my second time renewing the passport and still facing the issue. It's been more than a month and havn't received any proper response regarding the timeline or the process. I had lost my passport while visiting USA on a family trip and the staff was extremely helpful and gave me all instructions and information as needed when I visited them. They were kind enough to issue a new passport to me on the same day as well. Saved me a lot of hassle and trouble. Extremely grateful for their service.

  • Darshan Patel

I gave 3 stars with a reason. Indian embassies around the world can exemplify Indian hospitality, and hiring a branding consultant could aid in realizing this goal within India's current budget on the mission in NY or anywhere else. Sometimes, offering criticism or not praising also means presenting a solution. Agree?

  • Urbashi Basu

I needed my minor son's passport to be reissued for emergency travel. The staff were very patient, kind, accommodating and extremely helpful. Could not have had better service. Every member of the team was courteous and explained document requirements and steps very lucidly. Keep up the good work!

  • Nagesh Thanneeru

I went for power of attorney attestation and the team was so friendly there. I got my attestation done in less than 1 hour even though the document collection window was at 4 pm. I went at 10:30 and got them done by 11:25. Thanks to the team who helped me save time traveling back to my place.

  • Irem Gurel

The lady in the phone was so rude. I was shocked. I asked her a question and she was like no you can’t enter India and hanged up on me! I don’t understand how this is okay. I send voicemails to the consulate and they don’t get back to me, can’t talk to a real person on the phone either

  • Santhosh Sathiyaraj

Visited consulate general office for attestation purpose, really good people but you might want to get in as early as possible as they only have one window open for any miscellaneous work. Check out website for more details please.

  • Narinder Sharma

The POA attestation process is easy and fast. The staff was pretty helpful and will guide you if additional docs are required. Charging $23 for stamping two papers is way too high. Mondays are always busy, try mid week
