This is a beautiful respite within the French Quarter housing a fantastic selection of rare and vintage, as well as used, books. Jeff was working the counter and couldn’t have been more gracious. He answered our questions and nerded out with us when we asked him to show us a (very heavy) 1860s (I think) book of French Women in Art. Floor to ceiling books are displayed as if it were my own bookcase, using every inch of vertical and horizontal space They also have a nice selection of vintage maps. They offer an adorable tote when you make a purchase, as well as stickers that I will use on the back of my laptop. There are so few independent bookstores left, and nearly all in the French Quarter have folded, but this is an adorable bookstore that you’d expect to see in a movie. Check it out!

This is my favorite bookstore in NOLA. It offers books by local authors. Antique maps, prints, and rare books. Used and new books are available. Impressive poetry section and translations by Black Widow Press. The staff is extremely helpful, particularly Geoff. You will probably find what you want, something you didn't know you wanted, an amazing find, and a good conversation. There is also a beautiful blue cat to keep you company. This time I found some unusual 1st edition counterculture books from the 60s. Last time I bought some critical theory texts, French Surrealist translations, and two books written by local poets. There are also a surprising number of cookbooks and books on local history, myth, and culture. You can read one and be your own tour guide in the city.

Vintage and used book shop on Baronne at Canal. This large store has lots to look through. I spoke with a helpful staff member about New Orleans themed books and he pointed me to a shelf of local interest materials. I chose “A confederacy of Dunces”. Duh! Anyhow, thanks to the staff’s helpful directions in less than five minutes I was standing in front of a statue of Ignatious Reilly right on Canal street. There I was, side by side with Reilly, holding a Pulitzer Prize winner while drunken tourists staggered about. On a Sunday afternoon! Don’t get me wrong, I was part of the degenerate throng only hours earlier. I sat to read the beginning and quickly found it hadn’t lost anything in humor or relevance over time. Thanks Crescent City Books!

Such a little gem! The collection here is idiosyncratic, but thoughtful -- if you like local history, art prints, and rare books, this is the place to go. The art prints are top-notch, with all sorts of lithographs, maps, and periodicals. Spend some time hunting if you need something new on your wall. The local books run the gamut from cookbooks to niche history to novels set in Louisiana to coffee table books, and all for very reasonable prices. The speculative fiction section is quite good, and the history section is thoughtful. The highlight is the cabinet of rare books, which is just fascinating. Take some time and enjoy the shop. Everyone is friendly and while it's crowded, it is welcoming and navigable. It's a new favourite here.

We walked past Crescent City Books several times before we went in and when we finally went in, we didn't understand why we had waited so long. They were the only book store in the area, so they lived up to every expectation we could have. They had 1st editions that we were afraid to touch. They had books on local folklore and history in addition to books you find everywhere else. Oh did I mention they ship? This place is awesome! Visit if you are in the area..

My wife and I visited for the first time in 2019 at their former location. In July of this year we visited for the second time in their new French Quarter location. A great store, with wonderful books on New Orleans history. We urge anyone who visits New Orleans to go to it. The manager, Jason, is a sweetheart of a person. We were so happy to see him again!!! And very happy that the bookstore is surviving! Please make a point of visiting! We will be back!!

Beautiful little store with a large collection of books from all sorts of times and places. Don't let its size fool you; felt I could lose hours browsing the wide selection. The shop is clean, well organized, and the gentleman at the counter was very helpful, even showing me some of the oldest books and manuscripts in the building. It's a must-visit if you're looking for a cool, downtempo shopping experience in the French Quarter.

Incredible bookstore. Used books from the 2000s and dating back hundreds of years. Some really rare antique beauties as well. Fairly priced. Very friendly and helpful store manager that either knows the answers or will find the answers. I look forward to visiting annually when I visit family in the area. This will be a staple, for sure. I went to 5 bookstore in the area and this was my favorite for old books.

The folks at Crescent City books are always willing to help you find the right book, remember what you're looking for, and hold on to it for you. But my favorite feature is a simple shelf right in the front with their new arrivals. Every book on the shelf is worth reading, and especially when shopping for used books, it makes things painless. I never leave empty handed.

  • Mackenzie Chavez

There were so many different selections to choose from, and all at great prices. The person handling the register was very kind and was pretty knowledgeable in a variety of topics. I got three books, and with them, I was given a sticker, as well as a bookmark for each book (free of cost). If I ever return to New Orleans, I will definitely come back to this shop :)

  • Brianna Cunningham

Overall, this is a really cool used bookstore! They have a huge selection of books. If you like used and vintage styled books, this store is perfect for you. This store is definitely not like a Barnes and Noble, but overall they have a decent selection of books. They do have a really cool rack that highlights local books from local authors in the area.

  • Wesley Peden

It was a nice, well organized location. They had lots of great choices of books. I'm sure that I could have spent much longer just browsing around if I hadn't been short on time. The employees are very helpful and will go above and beyond to help find specific books. If I come back to New Orleans, I'll have to come back by and see the new selection.

  • Kristin Ziska Strange

I stopped in while at a conference in town because I like to buy books from local booksellers everywhere I go. I had fun going through the shelves and had an incredible time chatting it up with the owner. I even came back and bought a few of the recommended books before I left town to go home. Such a great place to browse and buy!

  • Marion Garner Wagner

Crescent City bookstore is wonderful ! I found books that I hadn't seen in years and the display of handmade beaded jewelry made me want to buy everything. The staff could not have been nicer or more helpful. It was nice to find so much Aloha so far from home ! Mahalo for your hospitality. Rick and Marion Kauai, Hawaii

  • Anitha Kartha

This store has a very interesting eclectic collection. I could spend half a day browsing if I had the time. They’ve got books that would be a great addition to a serious book collection as well as some some fun titles for a souvenir. It would have been a great conversation starter and way better than a cheesy magnet.

  • Lisa E McKim

This a great shop. Wonderful location, fantastic selection, and right across the street from the Chart Room. What could be better?? I enjoyed my first browse today and will certainly be back! In addition to all the great books, they have a really interesting selection of prints, woodcuts and other original pieces.

  • jophus Xakc

They have used books, new books, rare books, and maps. Prices vary greatly with the rarity and value. It's a decent selection for limited space, and the service was very friendly and helpful. She was giving advice on a lot of things to do in the area, which was appreciated. They had the book I was looking for.

  • Jennifer Roe

Fantastic book store with lots of New Orleans historical information! Located conveniently in the French Quarter across from the Chart Room Bar. The shop is nice and neat and easy to find fun history. Jason, Manager, is super nice and informative. Make suggestions, ask questions! He is also super resourceful.

  • KL H

I just love Crescent City books. As a newly minted part time resident, one of my favorite things to do is to stop in and pick up something from the local history/ authors section. The space and the staff have wonderful energy. I find myself reading more just so I can return. Thank you Crescent City Books~

  • Bookies

Not a great selection of books. When I visit bookstores even if I cant find a book, I usually purchase something with the bookstore logo on it, none to offer here. With a name like Crescent City Books I'd capitalize on Sarah J Mass Crescent City book with some merch. Wasn't greeted upon entry.

  • Leo Phillip

Cozy book shop with a great variety of antique + modern books as well as vintage art, vintage maps and photos. I could easily spend the day browsing the collection. Just needs a cozy little corner to sink into, it would be difficult with limited spacing. I am looking forward to my return.

  • Rebecca Morgan

The store host was incredibly knowledgeable on poetry and gave me multiple suggestions! I'll have dreams about this poetry section for years to come. There are so many shelves I've yet to dig through, and decade's worth of books on each one. What a lovely place, I can't wait to return.

  • Ren Scarbrough

Wonderful little bookstore that we stumbled across that was full of books and personality. Had uncommon books I've been wanting to read for a while by Steven Jay Gould as well as a very calm old cat who likes attention. Would love to go back and visit next time I go to New Orleans!

  • Bianca Fernandes

I’m so glad I happened to walk by this place! They have a wonderful collection of used and vintage books, plus some new ones. The prices are great and the staff was wonderful. I wish I had more time to explore the shelves- they had a really cool section highlighting local authors.

  • Adrianne Montoya

Don't be fooled by the smallish space-- this is a well-curated collection and the staff really know their stuff. They'll geek out with you over all things literary and bibliophilic. I've found several rare volumes here that I'd been casually hunting for years.

  • bronwyn miller

i loved the vibes of this bookstore! it’s a little crowded but charming, and the person working the front when i got there was positively lovely. I bought a print and it turns out it was her photograph, which is neat! Good variety of fiction and nonfiction

  • Scott Tatum

The owner was rude and got quite angry when I mentioned he was charging 60% more for a currently in print book than it cost new. Oh well, if you want to over charge at least get authors in for signings or something. Save your money and pass this place by.

  • Chelsea Hopkins

Huge selection of used books and art. Staff are also very knowledgeable about their stock as well. Also relatively easy to move around compared to other second hand book stores! They have some really rare books that are very interesting to see as well.

  • MarionBeth Dickey

Great little book nook! Was super rhapoy we finally walked by during the day when it was open! Found a few good ones for myself. Awesome selection of local new orleans literature and lore as well as older tomes, new books. Good mixture of everything.

What a cozy place in all the big city N. Orleans vibes. Original we had planned on getting coffee before going here and we did. Then it started pouring rain and we ran to the bookstore (which was only three or four stores down). We were

I’m so glad I stumbled upon this bookstore! There was a cat and a ladder and basically I want to live here! The girl who rang me up was super friendly too. She shared some history of the bookstore with me, which I really enjoyed!

  • Grace Su Ming

The man working in the shop, Jason (not 100% sure of the name) was amazing! He was so informative and gave us further suggestions based on what we got/liked. Lots of variety, including older classics you can't find other spots.

  • Praveen Sr

A must visit for the several New Orleans related books as well as the great collection of second hand books, all in a good condition. Also, country and region wise collections as well as some stuff on jazz and art.

  • Giselle Moulton

Staff was nice, Zelda the Bookstore's Store mascot was one of the chillest cats in NOLA. Books were priced higher than Powell's back home, but probably because the store was independently owned rather than a chain.

  • Andrew Korn

I came here twice during my trip to the city and had an excellent experience both times! The two gentlemen working were very nice and the books were priced well; far better than buying them new at a chain store.

  • Stephen Benson

Really cool rare books/maps/photos collection. If I can figure out how to order some of the rare map lithographs they have online, I probably will . Unfortunately we were overloaded for our return flight home.

  • BILL B

If my son hadn't pulled me out, I'd still be happily browsing & buying. Marvelous place. If you are a 'book person' stay far FAR away or you'll go crazy like I did. Nice folks, friendly folks, great place.
