We attended Customs House Hotel for an event with roughly 40 guests. Throughout the night none of the female guests were questioned when it came to the fact that they were drinking too much. However, not only did they remove a male guest from the venue for so-called drinking too much, when he had two drinks the entire night. They cut practically every male guest off requesting they drink water. Fast forward, myself and other male guests left due to the fact one of us was removed for no good legitimate reason. Our female partners stayed on at the event to continue enjoying their time with friends. They continued to drink and were not asked once over a 3 hour period to have water. This was the same for every female guest. They were also served well over their limit (I'm talking 14+ standard drinks). After walking out the door, one female passed out cold on the sidewalk, she continued to spew while the others were blind drunk and unable to provide adequate assistance. This venue seriously breached their Responsible Service of Alcohol. You should not host an event at this location and their service, management and stick figure security guard is to be considered unacceptable and attrocous. I hope to see this venue in court one day.

Great value for money in an historic building directly across from the port. You are steps away from the Salamanca Square, piers and great restaurants. Our C$360 bill for 2 nights included parking and a full on breakfast for 2 people for two days. The rooms are clean and a good size. Easy access to the highway and sites around Hobart. In terms of accessibility, you need to request upon booking a room on the first or second floor given there are a lot of steps to the rooms and the third floor is only accessible via stairs.

When I asked to speak to the manager about my steak meal having tastless chips and missing roast potatoes and vegetables and my wife's seafood basket missing the coleslaw and having the same anaemic chips, he said it was because I ordered from the wrong counter!! I was completely shocked when he was not prepared to give us our money back and basically blamed us the customers!!! Through all of this I was respectful and gave no cause for his rudeness. My advice is, if you are looking for a place to eat out where you expect even just basic good customer service, don't eat at the Customs House Hotel. P.S. The waitress came to our table just after I had ordered and was plainly irritated because I had left my table number at the till. She said if she hadn't brought it over the meals would have been left on the counter!!! Need I say more!

I am very disappointed when we arrived in the hotel.I told them that I need 2 single bed for myself and for my daughter. The room that have 2 single bed was at the back and the view was a back of a building with an abandoned back of building. The room was really old, the floor and the carpet is old when you step on it i feel like it will gonna broke and I'm gonna drop. The windows are fixed and can't open, and the creepy one is before you enter on the room it have another door that need to open, (it's open) Very disappointing as the room is very old, so we decided to move to another room with one queen bed. Also the stairs going down is too tight. The door going to stairs is absolutely awkward. The furnitures also need to change.Very different on the photo that they posted.Old and tired building.Better to book to different hotel to avoid dissatisfaction.

Ordered from the New dinner menu a seafood basket. It was the poorest, stingiest seafood meal I have ever had. I couldnt believe how for 34 dollars you received two ring finger sized pieces of fish. The tiniest scallops which were dissected roe from white. Tiny 3 prawns. Lots (a mountain) of chips. The coleslaw was the only good thing as the crumb on the seafood wasn't that gr8. I know it's a pub meal but it was a rip off. I get better battered fish at my local fish and chip shop. At least give one decent piece of fish. Two large scallops and 2 large prawns, 3 calamari and less cheating with so many chips. A seafood basket should be quality seafood esp. Since we are in Hobart. This is about saving money. 34$ for getting a tiny metal basket on a plate served to you. Awful meal. The hotel and location gr8 and the breakfast very good.

Reviewing the hotel only- would NOT recommend. Had a fantastic stay up the road at salamanca suites for similar price and customs house sux in comparison. The shower had hair from previous guest in it when I checked in. Unfortunately I only found out about this while I was showering. Absolutely disgusting! I was offered compensation by the evening staff and then this offer was denied by day staff. Completely unprofessional. I was offered a meal voucher for the hotel restaurant which was irrelevant as I had other bookings. The day staff came across as largely disinterested by the fact that they had checked me in to a room that had not met basic hygiene standards. Additionally, horns from the boats across the road start at 7.30am.

Steep stairs in the Waterfront Superior, which was very difficult to carry big suitcases up. Good space, comfy and clean, great view.
Walkability
Great access to Salamanca markets and restaurants. Hotel has lifts, however each floor has additional stairs which are unavoidable. Very long hallways which can be difficult for those with mobilitity issues.
Food & drinks
Great variety and very quick service. Very enjoyable meals, highly recommend booking for dinner as very busy.

Absolutely perfect location directly opposite Franklin Wharf and value for money. We had the corner room on Level 2 and the view was lovely. The room was clean and comfortable, and there was a lift if you didn't want to use the stairs. We also paid $15 for reserved parking, which was handy. We really enjoyed the included breakfast downstairs (generous portions!), and the pub itself had a wonderful vibe and a good range of beers on tap. If you're looking for a no-fuss hotel located right next to all of the ferries and Salamanca Markets, than you could not find better.

The house keepers were very helpful and very good at their job the service staff at breakfast were great .But unfortunately when walking back in through door to accommodation with grandson the manager was behind me and nearly ripped my arm off opening the door after me .then next morning run into him again said morning yet no smile or greeting not very good customer service even if your a manager so rated it 3 on that

I had a great stay at the Customs House. Nice views of the harbor and good food. The restaurant had limited serving times for breakfast, lunch and dinner but food could be ordered from the bar as well. Tyler and the rest of the staff was very friendly and helpful with any questions or needs I may have had. Lots of parks and historical places are within walking distance from the hotel.

The restaurant has slightly better than pub food available, although I thought the fisherman's basket was a little ordinary. Ended up eating here twice during our stay. It was during Dark MoFo so maybe that stretched resources a bit. However, our first choice of entrees was not available, neither one of the main courses or the bottle of wine we first chose. Like I said, maybe heavy tourist traffic reduced available products ?

Rude, horrible service. ARROGANT BAR STAFF. STOP HIRING ENTITLED ZOOMERS!! After sitting in the same spot for 2 hours staff cleared our full drinks, (THAT THE SAME STAFF JUST SERVED??) when we stepped outside to say hi to friends. Came back 3mins later, drinks were gone, and apparently none of the 2 staff working knew who cleared them. No apologies, just told we could buy the same again... ARE YOU JOKING?? HORRIBLE SERVICE! Would recommend your restaurant food was delicious service was good.just a couple of things, there was 4 of us dining, only one was having entree, waitress asked if he would like it as a main, so he agreed thinking it would be main size it wasn't, I was asked if I'd like another wine, as I had a little still in my glass I said yes expecting a fresh glass not to be the waitress bought the bottle to the table & topped up my glass. Not acceptable..

Booked dinner for 7pm on short notice and they accommodated us no problem. Upon arrival the fabulous staff really looked after us and offered the window seat which we loved. Entrees were superb but the mains were something else! My wife’s land shank was impressive but my surf and turf was truly amazing! A juicy Black Angus porterhouse topped by half a Lobster Moreau! Sensational doesn’t quite do it justice! You must must must try it.

Maintenance required: Room 5 Bathroom - black mould on ceilings Window didn’t lock or stay closed properly Location is very central, east walking to everywhere. Breakfast is lovely. BIG WARNING: if you stay on a Saturday night there is a night club below playing heavy drum and bass until 4am, bring ear plugs (even then you will feel it reverberating)

Six of us stayed for a week, leaving on 4th April 2023. It was a lovely touch having breakfast included into the room price. The staff in the restaurant, particularly Shay, would always welcome us each morning with a smile. When the tables were all full she would methodically work her magic around the room staying calm. She is an asset to your team. Thankyou to all staff who made our stay perfect. We would definitely recommend Custom House.

Not happy considering we paid over $260 per night. Room was clean and big but would not recommend as no window. Included breakfast was good. We also had dinner in hotel which was also good.

We had heard good things about this place and called in for a beer with a view to stay on for lunch. Other than the location I cannot understand all the good reviews. There is zero atmosphere to this place. The renovation they have done in the bar area makes you feel like you are sitting in a food court or cafe. The vibe was so "cold" that we decided to skip eating here, finished our beers and left.

  • Phil Riley

If you want to relax have a beer and a meal give this place a miss, i have never left a review before but after leaving this place so disappointed, we were made to fill rushed, staff kept watching us to pressure us to hurry even took out drinks from table before finnished, beers short poured and when mentioned barman just gave a blank look VERY DISAPPOINTED

We were asked what bread we wanted with the soup. We weren't told the bread was extra. Waitress swiped our drinks before we were finished. Not friendly service.

Nice little bar. Wasn't busy when I was there but I do know it can get rather crowded and busy. I'm a little chubby (not heaps) and found inside table and chairs were fixed so was rather uncomfortable feeling squashed between table and seat.
