I celebrated my birthday with 20 friends on the patio of El Borrego today and it was such a wonderful experience! I'm so grateful to Rodnia, the owner, and her staff, for being so attentive and handling it all so well. They sectioned off half of the outdoor patio and set it up with beautiful decor, as well as umbrellas for shade and a big fan as it was 80 degrees out. At the bar, guests could choose from house made Horchata, Agua de Jamaica, beer and Sangria. I heard so many compliments about the venue and especially on the food! We served a self-serve buffet of Cochinita Pibil and Lamb Barbacoa with tortillas, guacamole and garnishes, plus quesadillas made with squash blossoms and rajas that they brought out hot as they were ready. The whole afternoon felt easy and relaxed and I got to enjoy spending time with friends rather than being stressed about hosting. The mellow music they played set a nice atmosphere for a Sunday afternoon. This restaurant is such a neighborhood gem! If you're looking for a space to accommodate a crowd and excellent food and service, I highly recommend El Borrego!

El Borrego is one of the very best Mexican restaurants you'll ever eat at. Their "Lamb Mixiote" is a braised-meat lover's dream of soft, melty lamb swimming in lamb juices, broken-down collagen, and Aztec-Mexican seasoning. A lot of time and love go into preparing this dish, and it is a superb stand-out on a lamb-oriented menu that would be fantastic even without it. One of my favorites on that menu is the Green Pozole, a somewhat rare dish in San Diego, despite the popularity of red pozole around this area. The Green Pozole at El Borrego features both succulent pork meat and pork rinds in a fragrant broth that is a lot less overbearing than the red broths in red pozole. Another favorite of mine is the Huitlacoche Quesadilla, which has an excellent earthy flavor that is well met with some of El Borrego's habanero-pickled onions. Again, an item you won't find at most other Mexican restaurants in San Diego. If you're on the fence about coming here, don't think another second about it, just do it -- it'll be difficult for you to find better Mexican food anywhere in this city.

No dogs allowed. They have a very nice outdoor patio but they had a recent incident where a dog bit a child and now no dogs are allowed. Very bummed because we had brought our dog and ended up ordering take out. Parking is not that easy here. No lot, it’s all street and there’s construction going on and lots of red curb. It’s one of those places where you order first then seat yourself. We got chilaquiles with green sauce ($10.99), added chicken ($4.25) and 1 egg (1.99). Also got huevos rancheros ($11.99). It was two over easy eggs over corn tortilla with 2 extra corn tortilla, rice and beans. I am not impressed with the home made chips. It’s not an airy crispy that I like, it has a dry hard crunch and it gets soggy in the sauce. However, their sauce is good. Thumbs down on the small portion and price. The huevos rancheros is meh. Over easy egg was more like well done. No yolk oozed out. Overall, food was average to my liking. Service and atmosphere was exceptional.

Muy rico! I like El Borrego very much. I’ve been here twice and I have had the green enchiladas plate, the borrego burrito and a jamaica water. The enchiladas were very good, very good portions, my husband and I shared them. I had the borrego burrito myself and it was pretty good, it had beans, rice, cilantro and lamb, the tortilla was delicious. Their lamb is pretty close to what we call “barbacoa” in Tijuana, very delicious soft meat. The agua de jamaica, DELICIOUS! They have very fair prices, a nice looking interior, and their back patio is cute. What I really like about this place is that you are getting authentic home-made mexican food. I am giving the restaurant 4 stars (not 5) because I have had better mexican food at fancier places, but honestly El Borrego is really good. Give it a try.

Amazing Food. My girlfriend is very picky when it come to "Mexican Home Cooking." Her mother and her are both amazing cooks and actually it gets a little annoying always hearing how her Mom's beans or her Mom's Sope is so much better than whatever Mexican food we usually try in town. This is the FIRST place where sh'e too busy eating the great food to compare to her Mom's! The Lamb Quesadillas and The Chilaquiles are some of my favorites here. They also have amazing soups and the Enchilada's are sooo good. Basically, you can't go wrong with whatever you order, The cooks and Servers are very friendly and always are willing to suggest something to order if you can't decide. Also don't forget to try the Coffee, OK Im gonna shut up now, This is definitely my new favorite breakfast spot.

  • Charles Carlin

Simple looking place. Simple layout, looks like it is a fast food place! Order at the counter and then they bring it to your table. Nice. The menu is painted on the wall, and I suggest you love lamb if you come here. It is the specialty of the house. It is oh so tender and tasty. The salsa comes in two flavors and warm and hotter. I liked them both and found the warm to be excellent and the hot was a bit hotter than I wanted. The hand made tortillas were excellent and were gobbled up promptly. The dessert flan was excellent and greatly appreciated! All in all my cousin who is a local, now tells me that this a new favorite of hers! Were were all pleased and stuffed! Coming back soon, I hope! oh yes, be patient, food is prepared in small batches and is oh so fresh and wonderful.

I paid $20 for half a plate of chilaquiles and half a plate of beans. I was charged extra for protein, no problem but I don’t think I even got 2oz of protein (pictured). I was also charge $3.99 for this half container of chilaquiles sauce. I asked them about $3.99 charge for half a container of chilaquiles sauce and they said they don’t do charity work and cannot give anything away. I laughed because it was a great joke but I will never go back. They have zero regard for customers. I was trying to support a small business but $20 for half a plate of fried tortillas with green sauce is excessive. Protein was thrown out as it seemed chewy and lacked salt.

I’m always looking for authentic Mexican food so I found this place and decided to give it a try, they overcharged me, I ordered barbacoa tacos and they were poorly served and way too expensive and be aware because the price that came on the menu are totally different they will doble up the amount, the place have a weird smell I also ordered orange juice and they served only half of the cup, they charged me $80 for 2lb of romeritos and $80 for 2lb of bacalao and they gave me different total when I placed my order on the phone. I don’t recommend this place the food is way so expensive and poor quality. Never coming back again

The food it's good but this is not a kids friendly restaurant , in my last visit the owner made my kid feel bad , I have my kid very well educated and I always keep an eye on him specially on public places but it took 1 second of distraction of me for my kid to jump on the chair a he got grounded immediately by the lady sitting in one corner looks like she was starting at him the whole time, my kid felt shy and didn't know what to do, my kid was 4 years by then I felt bad also because I see others kids and parents being irresponsible and it wasn't my case I was enjoying my kid being nice .it was a sour experience not going back

  • Ruben Comparan

I really wanted to like this place. Came here on a sunday not to busy but had a very bad experience. First the cashier kept skipping the ordering line and taking payments and giving out things. After waiting I ordered the mole chilaquiles. Waited 17mins and got called up and was told my green chilaquiles are ready. they took the wrong order and had a horrible attitude about it. I wasn’t going to keep waiting or arguing so I took it home. The food is very under seasoned and chilaquiles over cooked. DO NOT RECOMMEND

The place was very clean in appearance. The food was a little above average with good presentation. The chips and salsa were a bit of a disappointment because I was chips and pico like you get at most places; however, the 'salsa' is the same hot sauce they give you with your food... plus it was only a very small amount of chips. Main dish was tasty and came out very quickly (I was the only one in the restaurant). Very small menu... like, there isn't even tacos on the menu... kind of disappointed with the small menu and lack of options. Overall, the main dish was very good!

  • Miedy Pakasi

Very delicious food. If you're vegetarian or vegan, they'll accommodate, but you gotta ask for it. The price is reasonable. Very delicious. The hot sauce is quite spicy compared to other Mexican restaurants I've been to, but I love it! To me, it's a plus! They have a patio in the back too and it was nice especially if it's warm enough. I'd definitely recommend this place.

Great place! Super-fresh Mexican food with vegan options. House-made tortillas, house-soyrizo, fresh guacamole, fresh Juice(!)-- love this place! Here's what we order for our "Build Your Own Amazing Vegan Tacos" spread for 2 people: 2 orders of Tortillas (3 tortillas/order) Then a side of each of these: Beans Rice Guac Soyrizo It comes with 2 great salsas, and a bowl of fresh Cilantro & onion. Add a fresh Juice (breakfast), Tamarindo or Jamaica (lunch), or a local beer (dinner). Before you go: Check the hours. They do close early, and close Mondays

This isn't your run in the mill little Mexican food stop. The menu and resturant maybe small, but the atmosphere makes you feel like you're visiting family. All the staff I have seen so far are ladies. Majorily women who are moms, so you know you're going to have the mommas touch when digging in. I can't say which dish is best. However, if you never had actual mexican breakfast then start with having chilaquiles since it is very simple and tasty. Finding parking can be a hassle so be prepared to walk if you don't score the spots in front.

  • J “Tello” Humble

I love finding places that make such authentic dishes and this place here is one of them, we came around 11am for breakfast, My wife was craving some huevos rancheros and I wanted some good old huevos con chorriso, We drove by here and decided to give it a try. They have definetly gained a new Customer, if you are looking for some good old Mexican breakfast this is the place to go, It is not pricy at all So you wont need to worry about it Being way out of your Budget. Parking is a lil harsh but The walk back to the car will do you good.

  • Annie Lou

I love El Borrego. It is a lovely, family owned, small business that serves authentic dishes. It may be a bit ‘pricey’ but you’re not paying for fast food, you are paying for a high quality meal made with care and served with love. Corny huh :) I wish more people knew about this place! Their chilaquiles w mole on the weekends is THE BEST. They’re often sold out if I come for breakfast too late - that’s how popular it is. It also shows that breakfast 2pm on the weekends does NOT reward you with Mole Chilaquiles. Thank you El Borrego <3

  • Sage Ortiz

I recently moved to the area and El Borrego is a god-send. They have the Mexican staples you’d expect with a number of other items you won’t find in other restaurants. Though I’ve not yet tired of the Toluca burrito with soy chorizo so I haven’t had time to try anything else in the menu. The guacamole is perfection. There is a focus on quality, ingredients, and customer service. Family owned and the service proves that. If you’re looking for a new place to call home, this is the place for you. Love El Borrego!

  • Paul C

El Borrego is supposed to be mexican food prepared in a traditional way vs the normal fast food experience. I like it but it is considerable more expensive. I will visit more often as finances permit. I have a small issue with consistency. Sometimes I am really wow'ed by the meal and other times it is just Ok verses excellent. I want the same wow experience ever time ideally with ever item that I order. But I can live with it as it is and plan to return again soon. Also, atmosphere feels cozy, warm and caring.

  • Michael Kagan

Yummy home cooked chilaquilles with an egg for breakfast. They didn’t have green that early so we went for red. Homemade tortillas are fantastic. The 2 salsa options were both delicious. The red one has a nice full bodied spice to it as well. Got 2 asada burritos to go. Ate them a few hours later once we got to our destination. Still bomb. Looking forward to visiting again in the future! The lady who helped us was very sweet. The place felt like we were eating straight out of a personal kitchen. Worth trying!

  • Grant Boroff

We were anticipating a nice Mexican lamb meal, but were let down. The caldo seemed to be watered down and no noticeable seasoning and bland flavor. Next was the lamb meat for tacos, though it was perfectly cooked, it too was very bland (a little salt would have gone a long way). Finally, the lamb flautas, pretty good, generously filled tortillas, but again missing that special something. Nice lady helped us out, and everything was well packaged to go, I just feel flavor wise, it was an off day.

  • Arnold Estrella

Every time my family comes here we are greeted by the friendliest staff. We love coming here. The parking in the area isn’t great but we park over by the YMCA and walk. The food is always good, consistent. My wife gets chilaquiles and I usually get a burrito. This is one of our go to spots for good food at a fair price

Not your typical Mexican restaurant. The menu is very limited. We shared a carne asada burrito. The kid at the register said the burrito was huge. Not true. It was average in size and in taste. We also ordered chips and guacamole. The chips were stale and it was the smallest serving of guacamole, especially for $6.00! We asked for pico de gallo and they wanted to charge for that. Needless to say we will NOT be back.

We live in Ontario, we had an apt in San Diego we decided on the way back home to stop by and eat breakfast and we stopped here. The breakfast was delicious, home cooked meal at it's best! I love chilaquiles rojos & the sauces was so good! Definitely would stop by if we ever in San Diego again :) p.s. the employees were so kind!

Absolutely some of the best authentic Mexican food you can get your hands on this side of the border! Ran by a beautiful and friendly family who genuinely loves to create delicious food. It shows in the product! The mole is amazing, their lamb Barbacoa is out of this world! Their Hibiscus juice is amazing and they do serve beer which is great as well! It was here that I first became obsessed w pork Pibil!

The food is so delicious and tastes authentic. As close as you can get to home cooked. My favorites so far are the Chicken mole enchiladas, chilaquiles and horchata. Lamb especial is okay, the lamb taco and quesdilla are delicious. While the cactus salad and rolled taco are forgettable. Mixiore Of Berrego is delicious but over priced. Borrego burrito is okay, a little lackluster.

  • Ana Corona

First time coming to this place. Parking is a chore, but if you're patient and manage to snag a spot it will be worth it. Fast and friendly service. Good portions for the price and delicious food. Huevos rancheros and mole chilaquiles remind me of home. Green and red salsa has great flavor too. Tortillas are warm and soft. Can't wait to come back and try other menu options.

  • Erika Perez

Horrible! Food is naaaasty and cold. Worst customer service. Restaurant owner charges for everything. Ships and salsa $2.40. (by the way ships taste stale) and if you want more chips and salsa, they charge $1.75. I ordered Chilaquiles verdes (should be named Water with a splash of green color). It had no flavor. OVERALL just nasty. Don't waste your time and money.

When there's a big heavyset guy that's working behind there and cooking the food every time I eat that food from their place in the patent of the runs right away and be like I need to look for bathroom real quick before I go in my pants if I eat at that that's only it when the guy is cooking when there was a lady cooking it's actually pretty good food somewhat

I would give them 0 stars if I could. The large consomés i ordered were only half full, the garbanzos were undercooked and it had 0 flavor. Tasted watered down and was cold. Tortillas took long to come in and were cold. Meat has no flavor. I came in once before years ago. Same issues, very stingy with serving. Not coming back.

  • Stay Humble

If you appreciate the taste of good, authentic mole try the mole chilaquiles! I opted for lamb and two eggs over easy. The mexican coffee, cafe de la hoya, was delicious and fresh. Greeted with big smiles, clean, excellent customer service! They serve fresh juice, orange, grapefruit and carrot. I will visit again soon.

Love to eat here! First time I went was for posole, seems like not a lot of places make it. Their food is very tasty. I love the mole enchiladas with a fried egg on top. It is definitely my go to breakfast spot. The staff is very friendly, and if you dine in they will make sure everything is to your expectations.

  • Elizabeth Cooper

This family owned spot is my go to breakfast place, and in the dozen+ times I’ve been here over the years I’ve never been disappointed. Everything on their menu is fresh and delicious, with their huevos rancheros being my personal favorite. Can’t wait to try the new ‘Secret Garden’ patio for breakfast or lunch!

  • Eugina Brown

I would like to start off by saying they were busy and the customer service was decent, but their food is very bland. The enchilada sauce was very tomatoey, the chicken had no seasoning, and the rice was hard and nasty. I was expecting refried beans with my meal and got pinto beans highly disappointed.

  • Vivi Becerra

Very friendly atmosphere. Was welcomed as soon as we walked in and the waitress was very helpful. I ordered the chicken enchiladas in green sauce and a cochinita pibil taco and both were really great and full in flavors! Was very satisfied with my food and also was my husband. We both reacommend it.

  • Winona Nash

One of the better places to eat in City Heights. Don't expect the typical greasy Mexican food here. The menu features Southern style soups and lamb dishes in addition to the usual tacos, enchiladas, and nachos. You can't get a California burrito here--but try the Jimador burrito.

Their food is good. but expensive also they give a little bit of the consome like it's just water in the plate no garbanzo beans or rice in it basically just the soup water. Needs improvement

Saw this place in the Reader and as I love Lamb we had to try it. It was so good, everything is in house made even the horchata. I highly recommend you try this small out of the way place.

I can only speak to the quality of the chilaquiles mole because it's the only thing I ever get here. But it is DELICIOUS. Service is good, and the restaurant has a very home-y feel to it.

Favorite home-style, authentic Mexican! Very warm and inviting. Love the Huevos Rancheros, Lamb especial, rolled tacos, flan. They even have craft beer, fresh made carrot juice and OJ!

Mexicanos autentico! Got to try the ensalada nopales. You are starting to see nopales (cactus) on menus. This dish is reminiscent of ceviche with a lime dressing but green. Very tasty.

Really good food...LOVED that there were fresh made juices, especially mine... the fresh made horchata!!!!!! I think this is the best horchata I've had anywhere.

The food is freshly made just as they have on the board. The fresh drinks were good. The food does feel authentic and home made. Would definitely go again.

Eating here is like being invited to eat at your best friend's mom's house. It's a home cooked meal that is cooked with love. If you like lamb eat here.

This is one of our favorite restaurants. We LOVE the huevos rancheros. The service is so friendly. Can't wait to come back. El Borrego is the best!!

  • Sara Feldman

Excellent food that you can customize how you want. Go for traditional or put a healthy spin on it. Delicious fresh juice too! Get the chiliquiles.

Food was delicious, staff was friendly and the coffee refills are free! Chilaquiles with eggs and chicken was exactly what was needed this morning.

  • Patty Cruz

I was so happy after I found this place. Their breakfast is amazing and loved that they served natural juice shakes! Great place, great service!

Food was okay. Chicken enchiladas were good, but the green sauce was cold. The chips and salsa for 3 dollars was a waste. Beer was cold though.

  • Jasmine Reyes

Authentic Mexican cuisine from southern Mexico. Yummy chilaquiles and their cafe de la olla is superb! Excellent and friendly customer service.

Had the chicken enchiladas with mole. One word.....Mmmmmmmmm. Tried the lamb tacos since lamb is their signature. 3 words....Pretty darn good!

  • Lucas Parsons

Very overpriced for the amount of food and quality of barbacoa you get. I suggest Texcoco. More authentic in my opinion and prices are fair.

  • Gloria MORENO

Lamb chilaquiles hardly had any lamb. 12.25$ overpriced for chilaquiles with a small amount of beans and hardly any lamb. Very disappointed.

  • Navid Zamani

Best Mexican in San Diego I've had. Food is from a region in Mexico where lamb is the main dish. If you like lamb definitely order it here

  • Shyanne H

The food and service here is EXCELLENT!! I can tell that the kind lady taking our order had a beautiful smile underneath her face mask ❤️

  • Jesus Medina

Great food, great atmosphere, great service. I’m a huge fan of the Green Chilaquiles but everything I have tried is always amazing.

El Borrego is some of the best, most authentic and delicious Mexican food north of the border. I eat here at least once a month!
