I've never left a review before, much less a negative one, but I felt I had to today after 9/10 visits usually end in disappointment and/or rotten produce. While I'm not sure what's to blame, more often than not the produce is well priced but either already rotten or bruised beyond belief; berries are usually dark or already fuzzy on the shelves, almost all apples are bruised to the point of being extremely soft or have holes and marks all-over, some potatoes are starting to sprout in the bins, and this week I found a bag of green beans that were white and slimey with the best before date marked May 17. Not many employees seem to be around, usually only one on cash, a couple shelving, and one person to help with self checkout if you're lucky. Everything I've tried to checkout that's Bob's Red Mill or gluten free hasn't shown up in the system and no one came for a price check when called by an associate. Today, I bought items on sale in the flyer only to scan for the original price. I'll take the L for this because it was only a couple of dollars, but this isn't the first time and I've read about other similar experiences. Otherwise, most pantry staples, long-lasting veggies, and frozen goods seem to be in good condition and in stock. Although I'm not happy sharing this as most of the staff have been friendly and I'm sure are stressed and work hard, I strongly recommend shopping elsewhere to find your produce in particular. While the prices are nice, most of the time the fruit especially shouldn't even be shelved. When you're on any sort of budget or just expect decent quality, things like this suck.

This has to be the worst grocery store ever. Beware- always check the expiry dates on EVERYTHING! I do not understand why their bread is sometimes frozen?? Do they freeze it, then put it back on the shelf to pretend it is fresh? Nor do I understand why this is the only grocery store with such a huge fly problem? (even a produce market can control fruit flies) A huge amount of their produce is moldy or rotting. I do not understand how they have not be investigated by Public Health but it is about time they intervene. Please beware of the thawing frozen food that looks constantly left out and put back in the freezer. This is a health hazard. Is there no guidance at all? This store serves an under privileged, highly ethnic neighborhood that may not feel or know that they have a voice. I think it is high time that people start taking pictures of the crap they are trying to sell on a daily basis. The staff are very friendly to each other when they like each other, otherwise they are not. The last thing I want to do is pay my money for rotting food while waiting for the cashiers to finish there conversations with each other. (take note- I just left the store- the cashier only said my total- the rest of the time she spoke with her co worker. No thank you, no hello and no good bye. I just needed one item. It is a poor excuse for a grocery store and does not even deserve a star.

I am writing in regards to theft and fraud from Food Basics at store #613. On October 22nd, I shopped at store #613 at 853 Jane St. in Toronto. My original total was $109.12 which I attempted to pay for with my debit card. Unfortunately before the transaction was completed, my three year old son pulled the debit card out of the slot. Of course the end result was incomplete. When I tried again, my card was declined. I removed just under $30.00 worth of items, leaving the total at $81.08. That amount was approved. Two days later, on the 24th of October, $109.12 was inexplicably removed from my bank account stating that it was going to Food Basics. Because of this, I was unable to pay my bills on time as the amount expected to be in my account was not there. As a result, I have also incurred extra interest charges. When I went to the bank to file a dispute, I was informed that similar disputes have recently been filed by many other customers, also involving Food Basics. My bank has launched an investigation of their own and I have asked that Food Basics do the same as I no longer feel safe at any Food Basics store. Unless they are able to provide a reasonable explanation, along with the return of my money, I will no longer shop at ANY Food Basics store and will let others know of the theft and fraud which takes place there.

Wow . Iv never had to leave such a negative comment ever. I work in the area. It was the day before canada day . I had to work late and walked up to the door 10 mins before closing. . I realized that I missed out on the main ingredient needed for canada day. Ground beef!! . Just one item. That's it. Nothing else. I was told at the door they were closing and would not be taking any more customers in. Because I was not allowed to buy one item ( I peaded with the guy at the door . Saying nothing is open the next day and I just needed the one thing) . I'm going to have to feed my family garbage Mc Donald's on canada day. Thanks food basics at Jane Park. I'll be going out my way to shop somewhere else from now on.

It has been renovated for good, it is like a new Store, improving in all senses: now people can use the self-serving cashiers for paying faster; also has increase the variety of products ; Experience employees always providing care for clients and creating a good atmosphere; Store Manager super friendly and always in the move, working hard itself looking to cover even minimum details to cover all client's needs. I meet him several years now and every time I meet him he is always working and looking to improve and have all wide variety of items in exhibition, fresh, and handy to facilitate client's shopping and satisfaction

  • Kevin Connor

Prices change to quick, usually more then 10 items in the store without prices posted and I have go and ask someone. The cashiers don't always scan the markdown code with an item. Items that have run out don't get restocked and state they have no control over restocking the item yet I've been told otherwise and items that were there being sold go out of stock and do not get restocked for up to 6 months! Produce is not always that fresh they don't replace the items fast enough! The older staff are not as friendly as the younger!

  • Yolanda Jackson

This location was not helpful. Went to get some sales item listed in the flyer. Some items were at the sales price and others like sugar were not.I was told that it was not for that location but a Thornhill location. I asked why some of the sales items you saying yes but others your saying no. Its all in the same flyer. Only to be told well you can go to a store like No Frills because they price match That was a manager advising that. Who tells a customer to go to their competitors to buy. Not good service at all

  • Lapsy Kevreki

I usually do not shop at Food Basics. I had several issues prior from 2 locations one being on Dundas W across Cloverdale. However since this is new and close to my work, I decided to check it out. I liked the store layout, floor (cement, authentic) the cleanliness, organized. Staff seemed polite helpful. Very different from other Food Basics. I hope it stays like this. Either because it is new or they have a good store manager, may be both. Keept it up !

  • Chantel Pereira

2 years ago I bought produce that went bad the very next day.. all of it. Decided to do shopping else where until last week because I was close by and needed a couple things, well not to my surprise the liberte yogurt I bought was mouldy when I opened it. Was suppose to be good till may 30th. Not shocking, was probably sitting out of the fridge and put back later (which is a No, no) ... this place is food poisoning.

  • Shazia Sheikh

Very rude cashier, who was serving a customer with full basket of 16 - 17 items on Express lane which only allows 1-8 items. There was a long line of people holding 1 or 2 items. When I reminded her that this is the Express lane, she went to the other register and asked another cashier to serve me. With this kind of service and staff, this store doesn't even deserve one star. I guess they don't care at all.

  • StreetPass Toronto

super friendly staff, 5 star place, I wanted chicken breast and was frustrated they were sold out, one of the staff member informed me I could get a rain check WITH 10% I ended up paying only $1.80 for skinless boneless chicken breasts which were sold out at $1.99. The store sales are amazing you will not find better value anywhere else. Food Basics and the Pizza Pizza are west end gems in this plaza.

  • My Experience

This has to be the most messed up and unorganized grocery store I have ever been half the employees look like they don't want to be there and are roud the other half look like there in space and the lineup gets big because people don't know how to use self check out anyways if you want just couple items good place to go in and out quick if your lucky

  • Sandra Gamarra

The cashier at the lottery was rude. the one on the express line was friendly and very confused and customers laughed I felt bad for her, she didn't know where the receipt paper was, or the size she needed, she kept asking for help running back and forth. And the lines are so big people walked in see the lines and out they go, I do that most times.

  • Abdollahi Tunkara

Bought some coca cola zero 4 a certain price inflation who's inflating everything make a review for a certain view or audience parental advice may be needed soon with certain foods costing like u shouldn't eat it acertain food (energy) I laughed and said unleash the what in G drink holy u know how to articulate ur vision everything is a process

  • Christine Zinni

Staff is GREAT!!!! I have been shopping here for years and the only thing I can say is that I want you guys to start carrying the Liberté 5% yogurt in a vanilla bean flavour. Not the plain vanilla but the vanilla bean. Half the time I shop somewhere else where I know I can get it. If you had to I would have no need for those other places.

  • Simon W

Good old neighborhood Food Basics located in a plaza by Jane and Alliance. Same plaza with Tim Hortons, Pizza Pizza and Church's Chicken. Came on a Sunday evening at 6pm and it wasn't too busy. Everything that was on sale seemed to be well stocked. There's always plenty of free parking. Note they no longer offer single use plastic bags.

  • Princess Spooky

5 stars for the sales and cleanliness But 0 stars for our cashier, I said hello how are you today? Silence... then she goes *This parsley or Cilantro* lol its like imagine trying to have a nice day (I worked retail and I left my bad day/attitude at the door not bring it in the store lol) Whoever you are...I hope your day gets better ❤

  • Isabel Blain

Real jerks when it comes to returns. I had problems with 2 items and they won't take it back. I had the bill and it was before 14 days. Nasty people there. Also there fruit and produce is all rotten. No wonder they sell so cheap. Garbage store in Bradford. I do not recommend you shop there. Avoid this store, they only sell trash.

  • DJ Paradise

Used to be a go to grocery store, on my recent visit, I was followed around like a dog from the “security guard”… every aisle I went, he followed, went to cash out, he was standing directly in front of the cash out aisle… not sure how obvious they’re trying to be that they’re watching you. But I won’t be shopping here again.

  • Wendy Bonney

Staff are very nice but the quality of the produce is terrible. Raspberries turned mouldy and broccoli turned yellow in two days. These pictures below are what they are selling as fresh food and this is not from the reduced pile. Sadly, this is not the first time I've seen things like this at this location.

  • Dawn

Worst customer service ever. I returned a jar of pickled eggs that were three months expired… But because they were delivered by Uber eats, the store did not take any responsibility for the expired product. Not sure how the delivery company should be responsible for food basic selling expired product.

  • Ali Ashraf

It's quite clean nice big facility in this neighborhood. Gentle friendly professional staffing. Some Halal meat product also available. All kinds of fresh foods available in the good price. Huge free parking lot. Easy access location at Jane St & Alliance Ave Bus stop at this Jane Park big plaza.

  • Craig

On par with No Frills and Freshco, Food Basics has a very simple layout with all the groceries you'll need at very good prices. You might want to go earlier in the day if you hope to get some of the exceptional deals as they sometimes sell out quick and do not restock things till the next day.

  • Robert Feeney

Typical grocery store prices very reasonable not enough cashiers when there is a huge line up more then 8 people waiting for one cashier. Because the store seems dark inside gives you the store is dirty feeling. Has most items that you find in other grocery store. No deli has daily baked bread

  • Tulio Lessa

The store has a variety of products that are either expired or went bad and the staff is extremely slow and never pay attention to anything... Not sure if they have any management cuz I haven't seen this in Toronto before, which it sucks since thats the closest supermarket to my house...

  • Kevin Nunes

I've been coming here for a few years now and its always been dependable and convenient. Always well stocked on sale items for the most part, good selection, fresh products and competitive pricing. Store staff are wonderful and probably it's best qaulity which is why I always come back.

  • Eduardo Amaral (Eddy)

This location really needs an upgrade and a real big clean up and the fruits and vegetables are not so fresh, all areas are unorganized and messy, staff is some what ok, good enough parking spaces, I still do come here some days but only for the sale products or something I really need.

  • Luke Wheeler

Selection is much smaller than Walmart or other nearby grocery stores. It's less busy than other places though. Prices are decent on most items, but they don't price match. Cashiers have been friendly as well, not sure about people on the floor but I imagine they're friendly.

  • Harpreet Gulri

Great thing about Food Basics is that if they are out of an advertised special, they will give you a rain check with further 10%discount. Just availed today and paid $6.82 per kilogram against advertised $7.56 per kilogram. Also found Rapini on sale $1.67 per bunch.

  • Shawn Devlin

Since the new renovations and massive cashier cuts, new self checkouts and 1 cashier working, this place is a joke. The customer is clearly now the enemy. Long insane lines as most people don't want to work there as a cashier and avoid self checkouts. Stay away.

  • TC MattTrnr

No fresh choices...in particular, on a Monday! Seems to be the trend for big box grocers within the city to hock their wilted and whethered wares to the public ((at regular price mind you)) on this day and restock with semi-edible to fresh items on Wednesday!

  • Rae 17

Produce is always less then fresh. Self checkout attendants sometimes hover behind customers and it’s so uncomfortable. I can afford to pay for my groceries… I’m not a thief. It’s worse because they seem to pick and choose who they keep and eye on.

  • Rabeah Karram

Next to fresco this is a great grocery chain saving families tons of money and giving them tremendous value. Not sure why people go anywhere else when the value is outstanding. Just come prepared for bad service but the prices are unbeatable.

  • Greg Johnson

It's easy to get to and they have better prices than Walmart on some things. The only down side to this place is if they have a really good sale on fresh poultry, they can sell out by the end of the weekend or within a few days at worst.

  • Robert Davies

The store is kind of dated and needed of an upgrade and a good scrubbing. Some of the vegetables I was looking at buying or already going rotten as well. The tomatoes. Some items incl specials (bacon) were out of stock. Disappointing.

  • Curtis Taylor

Horrendous Covid Protocols. I was told by an employee I had to retrieve a dirty cart from the parking lot since there were zero clean carts and baskets. Only then would they sanitize the cart. I will not return here.

  • Milind V. Deshpande

Vegetables and fruits are always fresh. Grocery is cheaper than other shops, many times on sale. Timing of Food Basics is very convenient. Customer service is satisfactory. Lot of parking spaces. My rating 5 star.

  • Kelly Bland

I have come to get stewing beef that is on sale on a Tuesday at 11:00 am and it's sold out! Not the first time either. If this store had what was advertised I would shop here more often. Off to No Frills...

  • Lo B

Not usually busy. Great prices. Produce and meat freshness does not meet my standards. Twice I've bought meat here to cook day of and both times I opened the packaging to discover that it had gone bad.

  • Keebs

Always 2 cashiers available and long lines. I gave the store 3 stars because I’m West Indian and I can find some West Indies items here. Also another reason for 3 stars is the staff are actually nice.

  • Material Girl

I used to love this store. No more. Susan and her friend on cash register will make everything to put you down. If you do not want to be treated like dirt, find another place to do your groceries.

  • Michelle Green

Always enjoy going to this Plaza. There is a lot of places to check out. Food Basic, Subway, Black Hair Supply store, Tim Hortons, Pizza Pizza, A Dollar Store that is EXCELLENT and many others.

  • Karen Pessoa

Yes the store is older but I usually find whatever items I am looking for. Sometimes I find items that I can't find larger stores. I gave it four stars because it is on the smaller side.

  • Toronto's Finest

Price gauging at its finest. There's no reason why simple items should cost $2 more here than what they go for at Walmart. Unbelievable. I don't know how people do their groceries here.

  • Mike Sorbara

Great prices staff friendly love going shopping when everything you wont is there !!! The worst thing is when you have to ho to an other store if they don't have what you want

  • Garry Melville

Store has poor selection especially sale items. If they have them there is not much quantity so they sell out fast. It is better to go to the main store at Dundas and the 27.

  • K. Savaan

Government lifted restrictions, but you guys don't let use us use washroom, so if anybody want to use washroom leave your shopping go outside and don't come back, that's it

  • Kyle Huggins

This has to be the best Food Basics yet. OMG the store was clean and all the staff were so helpful. The store is also huge! Will be back here on a weekly for groceries

  • Rebecca L

Employees are great and friendly but I find that the reason some items are cheaper is because of lower quality. Buy Cauliflower for 1.69 but it has black spots on it.

  • Christine Mifsud

It has improved. Vegetable freshness, selection and availability is a goal to aim for here. Good Basics needs to have more than one cash register open after 3:30 pm.

  • ali biid

Igot some of good prices like big tide soup for wasjing closes wass varry jeep and the stuff of cleening houses ireally loved and vary jeep dates ipreciatet woaw

  • CARLOS NINATANTA

There is no great variety of product, stock of fruits or vegetables in poor condition, terrible quality of some products and expensive ... not recommended at all

  • Ibrahim Varachhia

Very poorly managed store. Unorganized, unclean, only 2 cashiers, all others are self checkouts. Produce are not stocked well, and are not fresh. Needs a revamp.

  • Alexander Reid

Nice store. Clean, friendly staff. Small store, so less selection but very good prices - especially on staple foods. Not the best produce but great tangelos!

  • Trasa Bracken

Has improved a lot in the last few months. More cashiers on . No long line ups. Might change over and do full shopping if their keep self serve machines out.

  • Sharon Nimblett

The staff who was at the cash he was so wonderful with all the costumers who came up to cash out he was so pleasant I don't know his name but I thank him.

  • Jeff Kaman

Fairly big store, has everything you need good price's, some produce sold out but we'll stocked with the rest, parking very close too, no money carts.

  • Mauricio M & M

This grocery store is very small for their kind of business. You must shop very early in the morning to avoid other shoppers. Prices are reasonable.

  • Graciela Gomez

You are not opening your flyer unless I provide my name and email address. Your store is a dismay dirty, ill attended nothing is well organized.

  • Radu Pascariu

Place has been getting better over the years. Getting cleaner and it's nice to see frequent sales. I hope the plaza gets its crap together also

  • Anthony T

there shelves are not stocked with the items i shop ie never any dairy free ice cream or lactose free milk. I find the store old and tired.

  • Paul Reid

Clean , amd prices are reasonable. Something for everyone. Not a huge store but you do get what you need and tge cashiers are friendly

  • Wefour

They need to improve cashiers service . Always customers are waiting for check out .Long queues. and need to bring good quality fruit.

  • Don C

EMPLOYEE MADE RACIST REMARK TOWARDS ME AND MY MOTHER. Went there few months ago, never got to writing a review until now. Bought a

  • Andrew Kaikai

Well stocked and with great deals but alas they too are replacing human cashiers with those infernal self checkout monstrosities

  • Robert Davies

Rotten produce and weekly specials usually out of stock/limited supply. Not worth going to this dated grungy kinda dirty store.

  • Wall-E

This store is very convenient in its location the plaza has ample parking and some other stores to maximize your shopping trip.

  • Carol Ryan

They always have reasonably good prices . Fresh vegatables and fruits. When they have a sale they never run out and I like that

  • Dorothy Leroux

Good experience. People were respectful distancing and wore masks. Pretty good deals. Variety of products. Wasn't too busy

  • DFC FCD

It has a good selection of items. However, their produce isn't that great and there seems to always be a lack of cashiers

  • Juan Correa

last time I went was cleaner and well supplied, but I did go on a tuesday, which I believe is the day before restocking.

  • Thomas Berger

I always find great deals here especially in the meat section. Also like unique finds when they have clearance items.

  • Fernando Ferreira

Food Basic is good place for buy grocery and others products. there in nice location! low prices and smile employees.

  • Tommy Huynh

Great store but they gotta get rid of that shordy that approaches you in the parking lot like “ excusssseeee me sir”

  • Robert Collins

There was 15 boxes, every one was expired. Make sure you check the dates... I learned that from my Beautiful Wife..

  • Claudio Gloazzo

Great prices. Honoured my raincheck but did not have the quantity on my check. No matter. Still a great store!

  • A R

The place has lots to choose from! But could spend a little more time on cleaning the store up

  • Sam Gill

Quick in and out, using the self-checkouts. Otherwise, only seen one cashier working here.

  • Mark

This runs so much more smoothly with the new self checkouts. In and out with great parking.

  • Ray Dickson

Sale on BACON this week. Line wasn't long. 4 minute wait. Stay safe wear your mask.

Angela the cashie is amazing. She is very helpful. All staff are very friendly
