HOW is this place still in business and how are they getting 5 star reviews?!?!?! Reposting here, as my review and other poor reviews, have been taken down from another platform. HORRIFIC EXPERIENCE Brought my dog here after she had been bit in the face at a dog park. My usual vet clinic couldn't take her, but were able to check her quickly at the desk and assessed she likely wouldn't need stitches but still needed to be checked and likely required antibiotics. She's part greyhound, very intense runner and her breed is known for a higher heart rate, but chasing her ball and getting bit, it was likely adrenaline making the blood literally squirt out of her face. Naturally, I was feeling quite panicked. Dr. Harry could see her immediately and said she was likely going to need stitches, but they needed to take her in the back without me to check. I was not ok with it but in a panic to make sure my girl was ok, I sent her back for assessment. He suggested they give her a mild sedative or something to calm her so they could examine her. Then I was given a bunch of paperwork and was rushed to fill it out. As I asked for pricing and questioned items in the paperwork, I heard her whining and retching in the back, so I asked what's going on. He said they were inducing vomiting so they can put her under. I immediately told them to stop as I didn't authorize that, I was told she'd be given something to calm her down, not put under sedation. They said they had already started the drip. Like, what?!? You're getting her to vomit WHILE she's being sedated at the same time!? I asked for an explanation for putting her under. They assumed I authorized it in the paperwork, but I asked how when I was still asking questions while filling it out, but again, why put her under?! They didn't answer but said they can reverse it, so I told them to do that so I can get her out of there. The vet then told me I needed to pay almost $1,000. I couldn't believe what I heard. Among the charges were an emergency fee for bringing her in in a rush - they aren't even an emergency clinic. Also charged for sedation I didn't agree to and adrenaline they apparently needed to inject her with to reverse the sedation I didn't approve of. Within an hour, she had adrenaline going through her after getting bit in the face, then sedation, then more adrenaline. Extremely concerned what she had just gone through and how this vet handled the situation, I disputed the charges and Dr. Harry went to the back and left his staff to handle the dispute. They told me he apparently had to leave. So how was he planning to assess my sedated dog and potentially stitch her face if he had to go? I was finally told to pay $600 for his time and materials to get my dog back so we could leave. To top it off, they claimed they cashed out their payment terminal, so I needed to e-transfer the funds. I refused and told them it all seemed scammy, then magically, they were able to take my card. Under different care, my dog recovered - she needed some antibiotic cream, some pain medication, lots of love and she was back to good in about a week or so with minimal scarring. Please, please be careful with your pets and don't make the same mistake I did going here. More people need to share their negative experiences with CVBC.

I had a dreadful experience at Hemlock Animal Hospital Vancouver towards the end of 2020 when I took my cat there for vaccination. At the time, I was considering taking my cat back to my home country and inquired about the price of FAVN serum reports. Their quote was higher than I found online, so I visited the hospital in person to inquire about the detailed pricing before deciding. Consequently, I asked them not to draw blood and only administer the vaccination when I brought my cat in. However, without seeking my consent, the veterinarian proceeded to shave my cat's neck and draw blood. I could hear my poor cat crying in distress inside the examination room. When my cat was brought back to me, they had placed her in a cage. The veterinarian informed me that the blood needed to be sent to the lab for testing and demanded over $600 plus taxes on the spot. I was infuriated because I had never agreed to the blood test in the first place, yet I was charged for it. Upon returning home, I noticed unusual behaviour from my cat. She hid under the bed and started vomiting. Concerned, I took her out and discovered a significant bruise on her neck. I rushed her to the emergency room. Fortunately, she recovered. After this incident, I immediately informed a group of people planning to bring their pets back home due to the pandemic, warning them to avoid this particular animal hospital. The staff at this establishment showed no regard for the well-being of animals; their only concern seemed to be money. Moreover, all the procedures performed on my cat violated regulations. In standard practice, blood is drawn from the leg after shaving a small area, and the owner's consent is obtained beforehand. However, none of this was followed at Hemlock Animal Hospital Vancouver. They caused immense trauma to my cat and made her lose blood. This demonstrates their lack of professionalism. I strongly advise against visiting this establishment unless you want your beloved furry companion to facing immediate danger. The hospital staff are indifferent to your pet's life; their primary focus is financial gain. Stay away from this place if you value your pet's well-being.

I called in about a week ago regarding the in-home vet services, as my cat was very old and I wanted him to experience the least amount of stress in his final moments. When I called, the receptionist was exceptionally kind and gentle with me. I just called for a quote to discuss with my brother. She let me know a veterinarian would call me back to explain the process to me. When the Veterinarian called me back I was blown away by how cold and inconsiderate he was. He even asked me if I was sure I didn't want to just put my cat down the day I called. I was very emotional and tried to frantically explain I just wanted a quote, as this was a decision for me and my brother to make. He then coldly responded if I was keeping the ashes or not. I hadn't even thought that far and just asked for the prices for both. He seemed annoyed with me. He then asked me to confirm the appointment, I explained for a third time I just wanted a quote to discuss with my brother. He asked if I was to cancel the appointment, I said I didn't make one, so obviously! He called me back a few hours later to re-confirm the appointment with me: at this point I was livid. my beloved pet was dying, I had to discuss our options with my brother, the vet was beyond inconsiderate to me during this whole process and kept trying to push me to confirm an appointment. This was the hardest decision I have ever had to make in my life, and I am so glad I didn't go here for it. In short: Reception is kind and caring. actual Veterinarian is cold and inconsiderate to ones feelings regarding pet end of life. I am not a current patient: I was just looking for in-home service for my pet and my experience with the Veterinarian over the phone made me feel good about my decision to not go through with this service and go to my trusted vet instead.

  • Fox Winlock

Saw me on short notice due to my regular vet being short staffed, but I made a mistake in choice. Reception is nice enough but that's where the satisfaction ends. Doctor spent little time actually physically examining my dog. That which he did was not thorough and he seemed to have little regard for the exam itself (I had to catch my dog multiple times from slipping off his exam table), did little physical diagnostic and seemed much much more interested in upselling services I didn't need. Didn't really seem to care too much about what I had to say. I ended up paying for 3 xrays I straight up told the assistant I wasn't sure I wanted before she rushed my dog away. $550 later, and no more info than when I went in (unsurprisngly as I found out later). Doctor didn't even bother following up much after the xrays. I feel he knew the xrays were unnecessary. Reason being is I left so put out by my experience here I went to a different vet shortly after and they were surprised xrays were ordered especially on his leg when the new vet concluded after a -real- physical checkup (and rather quickly) that it was a soft tissue neck injury. The secondary opinion vet seemed unsurprised to say the least, when I informed them of where my first stop was. Guilt and high pressure tactics when folks are already stressed out seem to be pretty prevalent here. Do not reccomend and will not be back. Borderline scammy behaviour. Don't be fooled by the low initial exam fee. I get the feeling most people don't leave here without paying for something they didn't need.

This is a late review, should have it done weeks ago but did not get the chance. My dear dog's name Zoe, almost 3 years old toy podlle . I take Zoe with me anywhere I go even when I travel. We were with other veterinarian in new Westminster since she was born. Long story short, my old veterinarian did an international travel documents for Zoe last year to Europe with no problem. I requested an international travel docments to China in May this year as soon as I got the ticket. The dr. and receptionist told me I got lots time. Because my fly is in Oct. Funny thing is we visited the veterinarian more than 3 times for different appointments after my request; and no one ever say anything about the travel documents, I was assuming that they did once so they must know and have a plan to do it this time, so I feel shy to push or ask again. Until about half month before the fly, I can't wait anymore so ask again, they told me they don't do it anymore. I CAN NOT BELIEVE IT. Why did not tell me sooner and where I am going to do all those in a such short time. I believe all you guys as a pets owner can understand how I feel. Lucky me. My friend told me HEMLOCK HOSPITAL. and they took me in right away. The dr. and receptionist are super friendly and nice and more impotently they all patient. I can't say enough good thing about this clinic. I am so glad we found them for Zoe before too late, Zoe is 3, and long way to go, a good veterinarian and service can make my life and Zoe's life so much easier. Highly highly recommended.

Went there for my 9 year old golden’s knee surgery. They were the only ones who would not make me do another 1000$ In new X-rays because the ones I had were a month old. Every other place wanted another 1000$ in X-rays when the Dr here said “why get more, these are perfectly fine” that’s when I knew they were reasonable people. Her surgery went well , she is recovering now, staff were very pleasant and easy to deal with. They were the most reasonably priced in the city and did a good job with her. Other vets wanted double or triple the money to do the same surgery + more pre op X-rays for some reason, plus other places were saying other extras we don’t know what they will be yet…… Seems like this is one of the few places that is not out for just money grab and they are very pleasant / knowledgeable , So looks like I will be taking my dog here from now on. …..Edit … wow so many crazy people in the review section, I’m glad I didn’t seem them until now or it might have scared me off of going there. Not sure what everyone’s problem is. My dog had surgery there 4 days ago (Sept 2nd) and all went well, staff was great, Dr answered any questions I had , my dog is recovering well and he charged me $3500 for a TPLO , when other places wanted $7000-$9000 plus extras. Picture of my poor dog with the cone of shame ..lol

Dr. Harry and the Hemlock Animal Hospital team has been amazing to work with! Across various issues including a fractured leg, Dr. Harry would take time out of his busy schedule to regularly call me and see how Leo is recovering. Ear cleanings and regular checkups are very easy with Dr. Harry and his team. A quick call to make an appointment and then a quick chat with Dr. Harry at the end of it to see how everything went or if there's anything we should do differently. Personally what Dr. Harry has done for me that I am very thankful for is that my dog is allergic to a lot of different types of food. We took an allergy test and Dr. Harry supplied me with the right food for Leo. Keeping my busy schedule in mind he regularly orders food for me and gives me a call on when to pick it up. Dr. Harry has been very helpful and knowledgeable throughout the past 5 years and I trust him with Leo's health completely. Its very tough to find a vet that you can trust. Dr. Harry is a diamond when it comes to pets and I would recommend him to anyone in need of a vet.

I am a first time pet owner who brought her two kittens to the vet for the first time! I just recently got my kittens spayed by Dr.Harry Makkar and his vet team. The overall experience was a 10/10!!! The vet team not only care about your pets, but they care about you too. They follow up, always ask if you have any questions, and take the time to explain everything in easy words that I can understand. They are so easy to talk to. The only downside is that the prices are definitely a bit in the higher side, but that may be due to the vet being located in Vancouver (expensive city ever!!!). Despite this, a lot of discounted prices are offered and the vet team can provide an estimate ahead of time. Just remember to always have some buffer when you are budgeting. Anything can happen during surgery or your visit, so always come extra prepared! Thank you Dr. Makkar and entire vet staff! You are all too kind and provide such excellent service. I was not as nervous as I thought I would be Looking forward to my next visit!

Never go to this place if you love your animal! Owner who is a doctor just hate animals you can see it’s just a business for him! When I checked all previous reviews I was shocked unfortunately it was after our appointment. We just came for vaccinations and by phone I get one price list , in hospital that was totally different prices and unprofessional doctor who is the owner at the same time so there are no reason to complain he don’t care! My dog has serious health issues history and he has zero ideas what I’m talking about, same as Front desk girl told me - he is not doctor for disease lol so he is a doctor for what? My dog screamed like crazy from his injection and way he treated him! As well when I told him price by phone was different he change his face in a second and started yelled on me…he and FD girl was lying about to whom I spoke by phone they told me no one can give me that prices. Never ever again, this place have to be shutdown! All the best to this “doctor” please change your carrier you hate animals!

Dr. Harry works SO hard. He and his smiley team are lovely to interact with and each time I come in with either/both of my pets I receive wonderful service and excellent, thorough care for my pets at the best prices in town. They have a memo taped to their front counter that mentions that their philosophy is that pets often suffer greatly because pet health care is so expensive and they believe in giving to their customers the best prices possible. I've not seen anything like it anywhere else. And their price list has always been perfect for us. Thank you Dr. Harry and team at Hemlock Animal Hospital for providing a safe and affordable to ensure our pets health.

  • Melissa Blanchard

We were referred to this vet by the foster who found and fostered our kitten before we adopted her. They came highly recommended and I absolutely understand why. At the front desk we had the pleasure of dealing with Tadia. Having a new kitten you want to make sure you’re doing everything right and she was very reassuring. Tadia was so helpful in suggesting pet insurance and making appointments for our kittens spay and vaccinations. The way they love on our pets reassures me that we’re at the right vet. Dr. Harry was very informative and knowledgeable, explaining in detail everything he was doing and about to do. Cute cat picture for fun.

  • Milena Reichenwallner

I recently visited this place and had a rather disappointing experience. While the service itself was satisfactory, I cannot overlook the significant overcharging issue. The price quoted over the phone was $50 lower than what I ended up paying. To make matters worse, they slapped on an additional $29 documentation fee on top of the health certificate fee, which I find utterly ridiculous. I believe in transparency and fairness when it comes to pricing, and this kind of misleading behavior is unacceptable. While the service quality was fine, the overcharging and surprise fees left a sour taste in my mouth.

  • Katherine Lauriente

Dr. Harry and his fabulous staff have been our vets for years now. I can always depend on them to provide the utmost care and quality of services bar none and my Pomchi Teddy actually looks forward to going in and hanging out with them which I think says a lot about the kind of people that they are. I find Doctor Harry's price point on the services they offer very fair and he will go above and beyond, he even came to our house to put our older white Persian kitty to sleep, so that it would be less stressful for him, so you know there aren't that many veterinarians that kind and caring so 5 Paws Up

  • Chelsie McEachnie

Amazing place! They're so kind and compassionate with our fur babies. They take the time to explain all procedures, treatments and medications. Impeccable and outstanding service. Ty for your service!!! Well, they've done it AGAIN! Dr. Harry and his team are truly amazing! They welcomed us with open arms and warm smiles. They really do care about our pets well being, as well as ours. I Absolutely recommend Dr. Harry and his team here at Hemlock. Ty again for everything. You're soooooooo appreciated for all you do for our fur babies. ❤️

We had our kitten neutered at Hemlock Animal Hospital this week and as a first time, nervous pet owner, the staff made me feel very confident and comfortable leaving Sammy in their care. Their follow up phone calls were appreciated and caring. I called Dr. Harry first thing this morning with a minor concern, and he asked lots of questions and reassured me that everything was fine. He told me I should call tomorrow (on a Saturday) if I was still worried. We will definitely continue to have Hemlock as our vet! Thank you Hemlock!

  • Monica Dhir

Thank you Dr Harry and Dr gurmeet for all you have done for our Bella! You took utmost care of her just like she was your own. We always felt reassured that she was in good hands with you. You took the time to explain every detail to us and were always patient with all of our many questions. Having dealt with other vets in the past, there is no one we would trust more than you. You guys are amazing at what you do! It speaks volumes when our dog herself was excited to see you. Thank you for everything! We are forever grateful!

  • Claire Joyce

I have been volunteering here for around 1 1/2 months and have had the most amazing experience of my life. Dr. Harry and Dr. Gurmeet have given me amazing opportunities to help a variety of animals with several health issues. Dr. Harry is very professional and treats each animal with care. He is very patient and always treats customers kindly. The staff are all very nice and have been lovely to work with! I would definitely recommend this animal hospital to anyone who wants their animal to be treated with the best care!

  • Vancouverite Bulldogs

They took my frenchie girl in on a short notice and have been very helpful and flexible to give me an appointment in the quieter traffic hours, so I can avoid traffic to drive there from White Rock. The clinic is very clean and organized, the receptionist was very nice. They allowed me to be with Snowflake during the initial checkup and Dr. Harry answered to all my questions patiently. Their prices are reasonable and me and my frenchie girl left the clinic happy and satisfied. I recommend them to my clients for sure.

  • Anurag Chugh

Dr. Harry and his co- workers are so cordial, mindful, and steady. I've been taking my canine here for quite a long time and I've just had positive encounters. Dr. HARRY is extremely quiet and learned while making sense of strategies and consistently takes care to address any inquiries I might have. He take care of my pets delicately which is vital to me since she is very restless around new individuals. Generally speaking, I would prescribe Hemlock to everyone.

  • sarah palmer

I am with Dr Harry and the staff of Hemlock animal hospital for 8 years now. First with my 2 cars Francis and Sophie, and now with the addition of my one year old puppy Sky! Dr Harry and his staff are very attentive, open to all my questions and my animals trust him. He listens and gives suggestions! He never pushes for unnecessary tests and has the animal and the owner in his mind when doing his diagnosis. I just only can say Kudos and will keep referring him!

  • Patricia Chartrand

I have been going to Hemlock for a few years now. They helped me care for my two very old dogs, and kept them very comfortable through their numerous health issues. Now, my puppy is receiving his primary care with Dr. Harry and the team. I know he is in good hands, and I always feel like he is getting the best care…and they are friendly and reasonably priced. I never hesitate to send people there! I can’t say enough about the team. Dr. Harry is a special vet.

  • Rachel Horng

Dr. Harry and his staff are always so friendly, caring, and supportive. I've been taking my dog here for 3 years and I've only had positive experiences. Dr. Harry is very patient and knowledgeable when explaining procedures and always takes care to answer any questions I may have. He treats my dog very gently which is important to me because she is quite anxious around new people. Overall, I would recommend Hemlock to all pet owners.

  • Wendy Murphy

Dr. Harry Makkar and his staff make this a great choice for our cat and dog. They have often made time in a busy day for last minute emergencies. Dr. Harry is careful to explain the reasons why one treatment or another may be necessary. The staff enjoy animals and always welcome them affectionately. Dr. Harry gave us invaluable help when our insurer refused a claim. There are other vets in our neighbourhood, but we prefer Hemlock.

  • Xiwen Zhu

Dr. Harry and the staff are wonderful and very responsible. My cat had a urinary block and we were worried sick and expecting the worse but fortunately Dr. Harry was able to treat it and my baby is now doing better than ever we are very thankful for Dr. Harry who made time late at night to check up on us during the recovery period! we also always come here for vaccinations and such and always had a pleasant experience

  • Brandon Dorscheid

Dr. Harry has been an amazing vet to work with! Across various issues between a couple cats over 5 or so years, Dr. Harry has been helpful and knowledgeable the whole way. He was always compassionate and honest about the conditions of our cats, which made sure that we had all the information we needed to make the best decisions for our cats. And the icing on the cake: the vet's services are affordable!

  • Argan “Kohcthulhu” oil

Really amazing and supportive staff, took really good care of my rat (and me) when I had to put him down due to cancer. Dr Harry was really gentle, kind and compassionate, so was everyone else at Hemlock. This is very good vet clinic and I highly recommend them for any smaller pet owner in need. It was a really hard day and they did everything in their power to make it as easy as possible.

  • Emi B

Very professional and thorough. You can tell they are animal lovers. I was looking for a rodent/exotic vet when my mouse got pinkeye and was nervous because previous doctors i had gone to when i had hamsters with tumours didnt seem to care. At Hemlock they genuinely seemed to love what they do and not be put off by his size and squirminess. Clean, organized and reasonably priced.

  • May Lawless

Dr. Harry and his team saved my cats life 2 years ago, I've stayed with them ever since and have recommended my friends to reach out to them for their pet care needs whenever I get the chance. They are reliable, trust worthy and compassionate. They do not try to trick you with unnecessary treatments or tests and the staff truly loves all animals (even the difficult little guys).

  • Sarb Mund

Dr Harry has been our vet for over five years. In that time we've gotten to know both Dr Harry and is wonderful wife. They were with us through all of our dogs ailments especially toward the end and were a source of strength and compassion as we had to say good bye to our beloved pet. Thank you Dr Harry and Gurmeet for everything you did for us.

  • Aanikh Kler

Last week we made the extremely difficult decision to put our beloved dog down after 15 years. Dr. Makkar was incredible. Kind, caring and professional. He made time late in the evening to come to our home because he knew our dog was in pain. He is a fantastic vet and we are so thankful for his warm presence during such a difficult time.

  • Sandra Fiddes

Our names are Bruce and Toni. We have been taken care of by our humans ,of course, ( Sandy & Dave ) and the doctors and staff at the wonderful Hemlock Animal Hospital since we were born. We are now 10 years old, fuzzy, happy and healthy. We recommend this place for friendliness, knowledge, promptness, gentleness and care. Thank you!

  • Hannah Lee

Dr. Harry is sweet and knowledgeable! He was gentle with my kitty and reassured me with his answers to all my questions. I had a lot to ask, but he was very patient with me! Rashna at the front desk is friendly, kind, and helpful as well. My cat and I had a great experience- I would recommend coming here for check-ups and vaccines.

  • Maxim Karp

Never coming back here. I just picked up my dog Mika after surgery and had a 'self inflicted' injury when in her kenel after I dropped her off. Day before after repeatedly explaining to the Dr how sensitive her ears are, immediately after 'I' put a muzzle on her, grabbed her ear aggressively. I think she was struck in the face.

  • Sunny Andjic

Dr. Harry and his team are absolutely incredible. He has been my Pomeranian’s vet from day one and always exceeds my expectations! He’s a master at his craft, a magician when it comes to maintaining my dog’s joint health. Would recommend him to anyone looking for an honest and professional veterinarian. God bless you Dr. Harry!

  • Karen D

We have been going to Hemlock animal hospital for about 3 years and have been impressed by their services and fair costs. Staff are always friendly. We also had to euthanize our cat and everyone was just so lovely during that difficult time and we truly felt taken care of and that our cat was taken care of till the very end.

A month ago I had a huge problem with my kitten, honestly all the people who work at this vet are fallen angels from heaven, they helped me a lot, and they were always present for me and my kitten, the best prices and the best care, I feel very happy to have found them and that my kitten is in perfect hands.

  • Zaira Garcia

Had the worst experience. My dogs were misdiagnosed and in so much pain. Additionally, I told them I was going to get a new veterinary and they charged me when I requested for the online history of my dogs such as vaccines and surgery procedures. Don’t take your animals to this veterinary. I regret it a lot.

Dr. Harry and the staff here were very gentle and caring with my cat when she came in after swallowing a big long string! They were able to get her in for an appoinment right away and called to check in afterward and see how she was doing. I would highly recommend this vet clinic!

Awesome service, although it wasnt an emergency the vet here was willing to examine her and clean her up then provide me medication and she was very relaxed and she normally is very hesitant of letting strangers close to her but she had no problem with dr. Harry :)

  • April 1125

The doctor and the staff here are always very welcoming and kind! We have been going to Hemlock animal hospital since we got our new cat 3 years ago. We are moving to japan now so it’s a bit sad, but we’re thankful for everything Dr. Harry has done for us …

  • Irina Alekhina

The team is very friendly, the facility is nice and clean. Unfortunately, we haven't been properly diagnosed and tested with both my dogs. So many tests and money but no results, nobody focused on problem solving. Hopefully they will be more patient oriented.

  • Stuart Macdonald

It's nice dealing with a doctor that gives you clear and honest communication. He is willing to discuss options and unlike other operations they don't just go ahead with running multiple expensive tests without consulting the pet owner. 5 stars all the way.

  • Naseer Khan

I had the wonderful opportunity to bring my beloved pet to Hemlock Animal Hospital in Vancouver for their exceptional care. From the moment I stepped into their facility, I felt confident that my furry companion was receiving the best possible treatment.

Both of our cats have been receiving their care here since we adopted them! (We also adopted them here!!!) THANK YOU, Dr. Harry, for taking such good care of our babies, and especially for saving our baby girl's life when she was very sick!

This is the only vet I will be going to in Vancouver! I’ve taken my pups to a few in the area and it’s all up selling, high prices and inconsiderate people. Receptionist is very nice and veterinarian is gentle, considerate and passionate

I recently had to use the services of Dr. Makkar to put my girl to sleep. She suddenly lost the use of her back legs so we brought her to my vet then got referred to Canada West Vet to a neurologist. They couldn’t do anything and told us

Compassionate, efficient, excellent service! I'm so glad I brought Pazza here for her spay surgery. Admittedly, I was a little put off by the reviews, but I'm old enough to recognize a lynch mob when I see one! Amazing service, amazing

Dr. Harry was great! Honey's spay and microchip went really well and Dr Harry noticed some bad teeth in the meantime, and took care of that too. 10/10
