I have always loved Hootannays and have been going for years however on Friday I had a horrible experience. I asked for the happy hour wine which I had bought earlier in the drink and it was £15. I was then charged £20 when I questioned the woman was very nice about it and asked if I wanted a refund. I said I did so she got her colleague to come and process it. Her colleague a blonde woman whose name I sadly didn’t get was incredibly rude and stand-offish from the start. She made me feel absolutely humiliated and was incredibly patronising. She didn’t explain anything just shoved the ATM machine at me so I assumed we had finished the transaction and to be honest wanted to get away from her. I back outside to my friends, 5 minutes she came storming out and shouted at me that I didn’t pay for the bottle and had only got my refund (which I’m still waiting for). Her attitude and the way she spoke to me was disgusting. All my friends were absolutely stunned and asked why she was so aggressive towards me. Sadly I will be avoiding Hootanannys so I don’t have to have contact with that bartender again.

Went there for David Roddigan, an excellent night although it was too crammed for my liking. As a music venue you can't go wrong, drinks are reasonably priced and the crowd is varied from legal drinking age to mature drinkers like myself. Will definitely be going back again.

Been there last night. The gig and dj set were great! But oh my days...the crowds full of youngish stack up people (not all ofc - but enough to make me notice) feeling they were in the poshest club of London, not to mention everybody was on another world. Dont mind a bit of high but on a Danamyte night?! Nothing to do with that music culture. And don't even get me started witht the baristas behind the bar, miserable! Acting like you were disrespecting them when ordering. This place used to be an amazing place where you were gurantee fun 100% with his undergruond culture. Baristas behind the bar were proud to work at Hootananny and were having fun. I appreciate they swapped the ladies with the man's toilette..that's about it. Not going back.

Staff were friendly and helpful, location is great too, ten minutes from the tube and across the road from a big Sainsbury's if you need food. But it's a bit hard to access if you don't have keys, there might not be anyone to let you in, and bouncers might take issue with you if you try to get in via the pub during a gig. If you have luggage you might struggle with the stairs. Temperature was either freezing cold or really hot at night, not sure why. The noise levels are as you'd expect being on top of a live music venue - I imagine staying on the top floor is a bit better than the middle floor. The people were really fun though.

Biga ranx show was good. But the service not so good. I payed £6 for 1 drink. Had it knocked out of my hand within 10 seconds. Went to the bar again and the woman serving charged me £6 for another (guy that knocked it out of my hand didnt offer to get me another) bar woman didn't even offer blue roll to clean myself up. I paid for the 2nd drink, but didn't go back for anymore. My £100 drink budget only went down £12 due to your staff. So thanks I guess. Toilets were blocked, and filthy. Seen cleaner portaloos on the 3rd day of Glastonbury. Dance hall had sticky walls and floor before the show even started

Please don't attend the Reggae Brunch. I attended a reggae Reggae Brunch in June for my birthday. The music and entertainment was good. However, it could have been better organised. I went for my birthday for a brunch, but it seemed like a poorly managed event where you party like it's night time. Plus the event organiser didn't refund my money for the extra ticket I accidentally booked because of the poorly written advert. They need someone who has English and event management qualifications. The food was utterly terrible! My friends and I paid so much money for everything to go to waste because it was badly organised.

Stayed one night, my bed was clean and the roommates very kind. The hostel is well located. Very close to central Brixton. I suggest to Walk 10min To explore Brixton, it’s a very nice district, music is everywhere, I loved the energies ! At the hostel, the staff was very friendly and super nice. You can take a shower, you will have a locker to keep safe your important stuff and little bags. I did not experience the breakfast but it was included on my booking. There is a laundry and you can keep your fresh food in the fridge. There is a bar where they organise a lot of parties with every music style ! I totally recommend this place if you’re a bag packer

I was enjoying myself until a member of staff told me I didn't pay for a round. I pulled up my transactions and asked to see the CCTV to see what round I didn't pay for. They told me I was rude to their colleague despite being politely confused at the accusations. They kicked us out. Very weird accusation, we were very polite and enjoyed our time until then but it seemed a member of staff didn't like us for some reason. We offered to pay for any discrepancy but they kicked us out regardless. I'm confused and angry, despite really enjoying the night and the club before that point.

Hostel Review...Looked a cool place but unfortunately my bed was crawling with bed bugs. Im not just talking one or two. I killed 14. It was pretty bad. To their credit in the morning the staff seemed horrified and refunded my 5 day booking immediately and were very apologetic. Shame because I liked the vibe of the place. Issue is while spending the night in the common room i looked up their bookingdotcom reviews and found a bed bugs reference only a week before on Aug 3rd so it was either ignored, not cleaned properly or there's multiple infested beds.

This place used to be great, now its worse than terrible! Music used be brilliant! The place to go! Now its mediocre with the odd act worth seeing and even then the glaring lights on the dance floor and poor sound makes it hardly worth bothering. The dance floor used to be nicely lit and you were surrounded by good quality and loud sound. You could get lost in the music and it was fun! Now it's blindingly bright and boringly quiet! I'd be happy to pay the high entrance fees for a good venue but sadly it isn't anymore. This place could do with a change of management. Until then I'll be going elsewhere.

  • Nasim Tavakoli

I stayed here for a week, and the rooms were cold. The most annoying thing was that the bathrooms were at another stair, so it was very hard to go to them. However, the staff are very friendly, especially Evelin, the receptionist. Brixton has a great atmosphere, and I love it. In this neighborhood, you will find lively bars and happiness all around and easy access to everything in London.

Fun place to go to on a night out, only a short walk away from the centre of Brixton. The music is hit or miss for me but the crowd is always cheerful which creates a good party atmosphere. There are food stalls with different types of foods in the outside courtyard area. One thing to be wary of is that the place is often stormed with professional pickpockets and the security staff doesn't do much about it. Mine and other girls' phones were stolen one night and I heard of one other person who had this happen too. Hootananny's staff - please sort it out!

  • Hugo Palian

Great history, decent atmosphere, but everything this pub once stood for has completely changed. Drinks became extortionate and more aimed towards the hipsters not the locals, helping support gentrification. Bouncers here are super aggressive for no reasons. Gigs use to cost 3£ but now cost around 30£+ even though its no one worth seeing. Dont bother coming here, go to a spoons EDIT: I can have multiple friends confirm that we had to pay 2 pounds for entry a few years ago.

Booked in to the hostel, jet lagged and tired as hell. the fella at the desk let me know that they were full after* I had paid but said I could have the couch. I was more than happy to settle. At 3:30am, a manager came in with security and had me kicked out, screaming at me when I tried to explain the situation. I’m 18 travelling in london by myself and this place led to a really scary, uncomfortable night in a country I don’t know. Still haven’t gotten my money back.

Went for a drink after work as this used to be our regular spot. Definitely won’t be coming back as the lady behind the bar was very rude and ignored me and my friend as we were trying to order. When I managed to get her attention she gave a lot of attitude when I brought up the fact that we were waiting. She said “we were holding up the line and clogging the system” I asked for a Long Island and she refused to serve us so we left and went to the bar next door. Terrible service and staff management.

Wouldn’t go back. Asked the staff endlessly what time the act was on and told 21.30. We waited until 12AM! My mate left after waiting having to listen to a terrible DJ playing ‘Hip Hop’ which was more 2000s pop. Once the act came on, a fight broke out, so annoying.. the rest of us left at barely 1am. Literally, the worst gig I’ve been to.

Stayed one night at the hostel and had an amazing evening. The hostel is located literally so close to central Brixton thus everything you need and would like to explore is merely a 10 minute walk to and from the hostel. The staff were very friendly and professional. I decided to check out the bar during my stay and I danced and had a gorgeous time! Would definitely book if I'm ever visiting Brixton again!

  • tracy almond

Visited there after paying for a ticket to watch Carol Thompson and Janet Kay. On entry to the venue I was asked for ID, luckily my friend was carrying ID and we entered the venue. I pointed out to security that this was the first I'd heard we needed to bring ID. The arrogant, power trip bloke in the box was rude saying its writenall over the info. Which is BS. They need to train staff to talk the truth.

  • debora

I always have a great night here. The sound system is on point, they have a good selection of music and the crowd is interesting. The dancefloor can be a bit annoying in that there's toilets at both ends of the pub and the entrance at the other side, so most of it turns into a path. Also, can sometimes be a bit bloke heavy at times, which can get annoying. Other than that, great night out!

  • Juan Ramírez

The place was fun, but there is one woman from the staff that was extremely rude. She came to the front of the dance floor and threw everyone’s jackets and drinks on the floor in a very disrespectful manner. All the people were surprised as she didn’t say anything or apologized, and just walked away shaking her hands. We spoke to the manager but we are unsure that will make a difference.

  • Hishyar Abid

This is a venue that we have visited several times. The place is vast and bustling. The stage and hall are so compact, it feels your at a house party. The performance is so close you can touch the act with your hands. The music has always been brilliant. I love the place.

Don’t think the floors have ever been cleaned, too sticky to move. Poorly laid out gaff, went for sound system and was the complete wrong crowd. Was definitely overpacked. Guess if you’re local and drink it’s probably a motive, but if you’re coming for music would definitely reconsider.

Not a bad place but a little disappointing. Attended for a music event which started almost an hour late with no explanation or apology as to why. Also, saw people vaping indoors and a member of staff drinking behind the bar which is a clear violation of health and safety. The music was good, just a shame the venue was so disorganised.

Covert racism at its finest. With the brazen sprinkle of blatant racism. If you fancy being patronised and spoken down to by security, blatantly ignored by the bar staff and feeling as though your authenticity is nothing short of wrong…then a night out at the Hootananny is what I suggest.

Drinks are OK, ambience is lovely good music and nice food section. The jerk chicken was lovely with a good set of sides. Had a problem with my drink and bartender remade it. Lovely staff. Menus and glasses were on the sticky side, I'm a bit of a perfectionist so that's more of a personal preference and my only criticism.

  • Gabriele Tesone

Legendary late night pub and music venue with an eclectic calendar of interesting acts, in a very relaxed, "real" and down to earth atmosphere. I've had many a fun night here. Good outside space too and you can get food from the stalls in the front garden. Good place if you want to stay out late and listen to live music.

  • rio-raquel ramsey

Always a good atmosphere always nice to have a drink there as there's always something on comedy, live music,so set etc Good choice of food outside and heaters and shelter! They need to change their beer menu either slightly or monthly.. And clean their lines as it shows via taste.. Other than that a nice place to go.
