We were a party of five seated immediately. I absolutely adore the decor of this place, as well as the newspaper article on the stews for some historical context about the place we were eating at. They also gave us free bean and cheese dip with chips; you can ask for more chips but it’s an extra $2 and the staff doesn’t tell you that (and the refill itself it pretty small compared to the first basket). I ordered the lavender relaxer mimosa and had to send it back because we saw lipstick on the rim of the glass. Hopefully the drink was remade instead of just being poured into a clean glass lol, but the same sprit of lavender was re-used from the original glass they gave me. I split the Jocon soup and Cubano sandwich with a friend, and I absolutely loved BOTH, especially the soup. The flavor of it was just so unlike anything I’ve ever tasted, but still gave me familiar soul food vibes. They also gave us tortillas in a little pouch and chili oil to eat with our meal. If you’re paying with card, the staff will bring out a card reader to your table; after we paid, I had to ask for an itemized receipt since they don’t provide one for you. I didn’t realize until we had left that they had over-charged us by one drink, which was disappointing considering I had to get one remade. In any case, I’d love to give this place five stars because the food was amazing but will be deducting one star for cleanliness and being overcharged.

GUATEMALA Eat the World NYC review: One of my favorite dishes in the entire city is the jocón at Tierras Centro Americanas in Jamaica, Queens, so I was ecstatic to see the dish listed on a second menu finally. The version here ($13) comes out looking perfect, topped with crisp green beans and a deep green color from tomatillos, cilantro, and green peppers. Toasted pumpkin seeds called pepitos, garlic, and onions provide the rest of the palate. Oddly left out was the heat that is usually a big part of this dish, which I later learned from the owner was an unfortunate byproduct of his customers who for the most part do not like spicy food. ° The menu is absolutely all over the map, with Spanish tortilla de huevo, sandwiches, kimchi soup, and plenty of breakfast options with high end coffee and tea. But look a little closer to some of the items, especially in the soups list, and you start to see some standouts. Alternatively you could find some of these soups on the menus of a Mexican or Guatemalan restaurant, but what they share in common is their roots in centuries old Mayan kitchens. Guatemalan dishes like pepian and jocón are just the tip of the iceberg for using ingredients to this culture that spanned the lands of what is now Guatemala and southern México.

IX Cafe is the perfect married of the Latin American diaspora with the modern influence of worldly chef. I’m deleitad to say this as Indigenous, Costa Rica sharing my experience with this place. The food which at its root highlights ancestral food are giving a modern rebirth in elements from other tribes of colour, like their Kimchi. Each bite is a melancholic dance of ancient flavours, a flavour reminiscent of comfort, such as that of Nan’s home-cooked meal over a fire. Their service is stellar, with each server being vastly knowledgeable about coffee and the food present on their menu as well as the sourcing of produce. If you wish to dine at a place that provides a familial and home comforting experience. My one wish would for them consider, expanding their menu in a more seasonal matter that highlights fruits and vegetables according to season, providing us with the freshest and best flavours each season has to offer. After all certain things are enjoy best when you can’t haven’t daily. Just like how our ancestors did in the past, eating only what the land provided to us according to the season. Buen provecho!

Delicious everything! Loved the ambiance and the food. My favourite Guatemalan restaurant in NYC. The chef is a sweetie from Xela. I asked for the secret menu and the bartender had the biggest grin on his face as he pulled a deck of cards out of a rum bottle canister. We shuffled through the dream deck and ordered two dishes from the secret menu. It pays to read the New York Times article about Ix! . The chef even tossed in scallop-edged round blue nachos and black bean salsa with some hot-hot sauce (so firey you only need a few drops) so we won't get hangry while he was prepping our meals. . Everything was absolutely delicious and I mean everythang from the cucumber salad to the jacon to the cacao frappe to the rosemary churros with dulce de leche. Love our tradition of coming here during the Greenest Block in Brooklyn contest.

My favorite neighborhood spot. Some of the best customer service you have ever received, and every member of the team is so sweet! Stephanie, was the first person to make me feel home in the space, and it's always a pleasure to check in with her no matter what else is going on. As far as the yummy food, all of it is intentional and thoughtful. My favorites are the ginger hot chocolate, rosemary churros, Pepian soup, and the short ribs - everything is so flavorfully complex and delicious. The head chef, Jorge, is also very kind, and I believe he lived in Berlin for a bit, which explains some of the German/Guatemalan fusion you see on the menu. I really enjoy this spot, and tell everyone about it as much as I can - definitely recommend!

Ix is the best Guatemalan food I’ve ever tasted outside of Guate (and my family’s cooking). The paches are flavorful with a wonderful texture and served with slices of white bread (that’s how we eat them at my house). Definitely order the chuchitos if you’re looking for a denser tamalito to eat with crema (their spin on it with horseradish is beyond tasty). Even their sandwiches served with toasted pumpkin seeds are delicious. You won’t regret it. The vibes here are immaculate with lovely decor, really fun live music, and excellent service. Make sure to end your meal with a cafecito (I had a cappuccino that was delicious even unsweetened) and a rellenito. I love it here and can’t wait to go back the next time I visit New York!

Out of our five day restaurant experience in NYC this one was by far most memorable. The menu's words don't do the food justice as it's complex flavors and fragrances unfold in your palate. As a family of four we had two sandwiches, pancakes and one soup, as well one desert, coffee and hot chocolate. All items were exceptional in their delivery. The coffee was bold, full bodied but not burned like a French roast, the hot cocoa deserves a visit all on its own, the food was simply great in all aspects, flavor, the satiety it provided, and the feeling of quality. The staff was responsive, friendly, and fun.

A taste of home away from home, a hidden gem in the area; this authentic Guatemalan restaurant with Mayan dishes is the best spot to stop before and after your Prospect park stroll. Gotta try all the different types of hot chocolate, each with a unique flavor. Grab one of their flavorful stews when hungry, or a well elaborated egg dish when starting your day. The taste of everything in this place is to die for. And don't forget to cheers with the very friendly staff with a cold Famosa, known as Gallo in Guatemala.

Got hungry walking through the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, went to Google to get to a good sit-down eatery, found this. What a treat! The reviews are spot on- the Pepian was superb, but the Jocon was amazing and stole the show. The hot chocolate was just the right balance is sweetness. The lavender hot chocolate was a nice twist to the old recipe. We finished with a round of rosemary churros - perfect ending!

One of THE most tremendous restaurants in Brooklyn/NYC. The hospitality is . The flavorful food and decor transports you well beyond our boroughs & borders to a rich and joyous dining experience, where even just for a meal, you are transported to the lush, delicious, best of the best, in a land far away. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Sprint, don't run! The truffle corn is bae. The soups are naughty. The honey fig balsamic reduction omelet is a grandslam.

Good place. The pepian soup let the cinnamon, cardamom, cumin, pumpkin, and chicken stand on their own. Highly recommend. The ründstuck sliders had a pernil too dry for me. The tortilla de huevos had the kind of egg that is really fluffy and wide with crisp on both sides, which you either think is fun or think is weird. I think it's fun. Coffee was good as well. The ambience is so cool, very much an inviting place to eat and socialize.

Authentic Guatemalan cuisine. Awesome appetizers (we ordered corn cup and melted cheese with jalapeño), delicious main courses (chicken soup, pepian, etc). Churros and chocolate are superb!. Service was a bit let down, the waiter was friendly but took forever to take the order, clean the tables, and get the order for dessert. The atmosphere was nice with live music. I will definitely come back!

Ix is such an amazing place to dine, I spoke to the owner who is very humble and kind, he wanted to start ix as a Mexican restaurant but eventually slowly introduced it as a Guatemalan cuisine. I have to say that their food is very tasteful! Their chocolate drink is to die for! I had them put ice since it was summer in New York and I needed a cold drink but not frozen slushy, they are very accommodating to my request. All the staff are very welcoming and respectful, definitely a must go if you want to try authentic Guatemalan food in Brooklyn!

  • Michelle Lin

I Definitely recommend getting the jocón. It’s a bangin chicken stew that is so large, it could feed two people. It has a little acidity from the tomatillos and nuttiness from the pumpkin seeds. You should Definitely ask for the hot sauce on the side. I ended up buying a container to go cause it was that good. I can’t wait to come back here to try more of their soups and hot chocolates especially in the wintertime. The prices are affordable and the food is delicious

Delicious jocón and pepián (the jocón was our favorite), & mole plantain dessert, with an all-over-the-place menu I’ve never not been pleasantly surpised by. Ask for the chili oil if it’s not on your table, it’s unreal. I’m going to buy a jar next time I stop by. Very sweet workers—tip them well! I miss living around the corner from this place.

Ix has a unique menu that has a little something for everyone. Complimentary bean dip and chips when you dine in. One thing that is not on the menu (if dining in), are their ribs. They literally fall off the bone. Best ribs nearby and my go to spot! I may regret letting the ribs secret out, but they are a must try! Please leave some ribs for me though!

Amazing Guatemalan food! Loved it here! Great ambience & atmosphere. Beautiful interior decor with so much color and life. Place is tight though. Inside and outside dining available. Loved the cardamom cocoa, but wasn't a fan of the iced chai. Got one of the most recommended soups. The soup/stew was devine! The green eggs sandwich was delicious! The service was a little slow but definitely will return & Highly recommend.

Food was good and service was pleasant. The way they will calculate the bill is bit upsetting. 85 bucks for two sandwiches and two frozen margaritas in a tiny glass plus tip is just bit too much. On the menu frozen margaritas are listed for 7 bucks, frozen flavored margaritas are 5 bucks more. On my bill frozen flavored margarita was over 16 bucks. Bit too much for a small glass where half of it is just a foam.

The environment was beautiful and the menu had a nice variety of options. Tried their warmed wine and found that it had anise, cinnamon and an orange slice — tasted so good! I ordered the popular soup, crazy corn, tres leches and hot chocolate. Canned corn for $10 is ridiculous. The soup had half a stick of carrot, maybe 1/4 of a potato and one small piece of chicken shredded. That being said, it was good. Although my hot chocolate spilled by the time it was delivered to me, it was delicious. Everything was delicious and flavorful. I only took away points for the prices.

I think the best thing about the food scene in NY the availability of cuisines that are common to other major cities. This Guatemalan restaurants a prime example of showcasing the range of flavors it countries cuisine provides. The stew show here boasted so much flavor & was perfect for my hangover too. Absolutely love the food here! Can’t wait to try more things on the menu. We shared the melted cheese, which sounds kind of basic but was sinfully good, and the hot figs with goat cheese which was also absolutely delicious. The flavors of this restaurant are so new and fresh to me. It makes me want to go to Guatemala immediately. The soups are out of control delicious. If you’re dining with another person and you can each order a different soup and ask them to divide it and you can try two. I’ve tried all the soups now and always go with the same person. The tres leche is probably the best I’ve ever had. So so good.

I love this café. It's got a great staff and intimate interior. I've not explored the menu enough because I mostly come here to relive my experience in Xela (Quetzaltenango) Guatemala with their selection of cacao drinks. I always go for the cacao aguado. It's a delicious, rich, vegan cocoa or cacao drink. LOVE. I shall return for food...and more cacao.

No shortage of culinary treasures in Brooklyn. Here’s another one. Guatemalan fare made just right in an intimate setting. The shrimp sliders were a delight, the only downside was I ate them all and longed for more. The Belleza sandwich is scrumptious. I recommend the House hot sauce in everything. Yum.

  • Alison C

Got the Caldo Ix and Pepian which were both great. The Caldo Ix is similar to a chicken noodle soup base with rice, vegetables, and chicken. The Pepian was smoky and paired well with the hot sauce. I also got the Ix Cacao which was rich and not too sweet — the size and taste was worth the price IMO.

What an amazing soup. Super clean and the coldest beer I have had in a long time. Great service on a slow Monday night. Will be back. Oh. Get the hot sauce!

The coffee and hot chocolate were both great. Will have to come back to scope out the food. EDIT: Had two of the sandwiches, both of them were great.
