Just drove from Mayport to the Westside to pick up the police report of my son being hit by a drunk driver. The drunken lady hit my son and then fled the scene of the crime. They found her and took her to the hospital and took her to jail. This all happened 2/16/2022. I went with my son in ambulance to the hospital with him and his girlfriend who were thankfully wearing their seatbelts after getting T boned and car totaled. Another officer who couldn’t write the report comes and hands me a victims pamphlet with the case number at the hospital and told me I could go get the crash report and drivers report the next day. I waited two days and officer Nicolini is out of the office until next week and he works the midnight shift so I won’t get the paperwork until the end of next week. Now seeing as how this stuff is very time sensitive, why would you wait days to write the report? why not do it while It’s fresh in your head? Now my attorney, insurance and everything that had happened with this accused has turned our world upside down and now were on hold until Officer Nicolini gets back from vacation to write a report that I’m sure should have been written already. I’m not sure but is it proper protocol to write a report this far after the incident???

I have personally filed reports with JSO and it has taken upwards of 4 hours to get an officer to respond just to give a statement. Homeowners have reported to me as HOA President similar experiences. The station stated they couldn't do much without a report, but their inaction, rude comments and excessive wait times to file a report is inappropriate. I was even told by an officer that I was not accurate when I told her I've had to wait for over 4 hours for an officer to respond. There were some good officers like Barnett and Vermillion over the years, but when others have responded they act annoyed or even dismissive when you try to inquire. In some cases I called the non-emergency number just to inquire and they forced me to wait for an officer to come out over a question. ----- Update: This is NOT an "anti-police" post, but a honest evaluation of personal experiences with JSO. I support our police department and hope for improvement in the areas I addressed.
