CURATORIAL NOTE ON THE ARTWORK PROGRAM Art Wall Small In India Jaya He mark and celebrate every rite of passage, particularly in travel – every threshold and doorway is enriched by ritual consecrating the journey through it. Jaya He ambition was to bring this sensibility to the airport, infusing meaning into the huge spatial volumes of T2 Mumbai. Jaya He was conceived as an initiation into the immediate environment and the larger context of the airport, the city of Mumbai and of India as a whole. Reflecting the many - layered story that is India, the collection evolved into an immense multi-disciplinary endeavour, like a new museum. Arguably India’s largest public art initiative, Jaya He has two distinct sections so far. The first of these is in the arrivals corridor, consisting of a series of nos. especially commissioned artworks that map the city as a layered narrative, unfolding page by page before the disembarking travellers. The second section is a wall running like a central curvilinear spine, designed to direct and control circulation of passengers through the terminal. Jaya He wanted the wall itself to become the artwork of an immense sculptural tableau of India’s plural cultural legacy, living traditions and contemporary artistic expression. Jaya He brought together designers, artists, artisans, architects, art historians, anthropologists and conservators with technicians, all working together to distil and interpret India culturally, aesthetically, historically and socially in a manner that leaves visitors with doubt that they are in the heart of the South Asian subcontinent.

JAYA HE GVK NEW MUSEUM Art and Culture : GVK CSMIA T2 is home to India’s largest public art programme, titled ‘Jaya He’, in the form of a 3.2 km multi-storey Art Wall, illuminated by skylights, that has over 5000 pieces of artwork and artifacts from every region & corner of India. Possibly India’s largest public artwork project to date, Jaya He Museum at the Mumbai International Airport, spans across Terminal 2 and is a landmark corporate initiative to safeguard an immense cultural resource. One of the few Installations I liked during my visit here: 1. Recycled & Unconventional Map of Mumbai 2. Hawa Mahal in Turban denoting Vaayu (An element of panchmahabhuta) 3. Frozen Fire denoting Agni 4. Moving Constant- (Tanjore Paintings- Folk Art Form) 5. Nomadic Tribes (Gadiya Lohar) 6. Vahanas (mount/vehicle) of a Hindu God 7. Palitana Painting (09/09/1934) Special thanks to Ms.Ashwini Varma @ashwini_varma for a guided tour of the museum. You can also plan your visit, for no matter how many times you transit through the airport, Domestic or International, it been created in a way that you will be see a new detail in these exquisite “narrative trails” rich in ethnographic stories every time you are at the Airport. CSMIA gives you an opportunity to take a guided tour of the museum in the departures section. Called as Jaya He Safari, these tours can be availed for free as you depart from Terminal 2.

I had an amazing experience with the GVK guided tour of the museum. The guides were fantastic and very interactive. The exhibits are phenomenal and having someone explain it makes one appreciate it further. This is a free of cost tour that you can take if you have a long layover or waiting time at the airport. One can easily register for it online on the csia website. They say the registration should be done prior to 24 hrs but I had done some 15 hrs before and they accomodated me. My tour was around 2 hours and it was time we'll spent. It is up to you how much and how long you want to spend. The flexibility is its hallmark. Overall I would love to do this again as I was only able to see the parts in the domestic level of the terminal. Specially recommended for all foreigners who travel in and out of the country. If you love art and sculpture, you would not regret making this decision. I also got a thank you email along with a pic and a few post cards and pamphlets.

One cannot miss the spectacular artworks incorporated in to the Mumbai Airport terminal 2 . Only a very few people know that this is the Jaya He gvk museum. Look closely ladies and gentlemen, I found this as a brilliant narrative of our culture and transformation, a fine blend of art and history, and ofcourse extraordinary means of communication, especially as they make it available for free at a platform where people enter and move out carrying it's essence where they travel. Jaya He also provides a free Safari explaining the intricacies of these magnificent pieces of art. They also have a Jaya He museum shop where one can find very interesting at works, handprint clothes, essential oils and showpieces. I found the Jaya He project as a very thoughtful initiative. One special mention about my Jaya He Safari captain Simran. She did a great job in giving us a deep insight into the art and definitely made us inquisitive in knowing more.

The Jaya He museum is inside the terminal 2 of the CSIA (Mumbai international Airport). It's spread out in the east as well as the west wings of the airport in the form of an U. It spreads over large walls spanning 3 floors of the airport. Its beautifully thought out and the exhibits depict Indian heritage and pay homage to many obscure or forgotten cultural and artistic brilliance of our country. There is an app that can be downloaded and played along while browsing the exhibits. It's truly spectacular and passengers should take out time to visit this during their wait at the airport.

The most equisite collection of contemporary Indian Art! There are two aspects of this Airport Museum - 1. The fact that this collection is on display in an airport makes this Airport highly engaging and makes the experience one to remember ! 2. The collection itself is stunning, with very creative and unique interpretation of Indian Art in contemporary settings... The creativity of the collection is a standout in today's Indian setting...

In India we mark and celebrate every rite of passage, particularly in travel – every threshold and doorway is enriched by a ritual, consecrating the journey through it. Our ambition was to bring this sensibility to the airport, infusing meaning into the huge spatial volumes of T2 Mumbai. Jaya He was conceived as an initiation into the immediate environment and the larger context of the airport, the city of Mumbai and of India as a whole.

Jaya He, GVK New Museum T2 Mumbai was conceived as a spectacular doorway to India. It is also a distinctive narrative of India’s incredible diversity, living in multiple centuries simultaneously. One of the largest public art programs in India, where the binaries between folk, traditional and contemporary art are broken. The artwork interprets India, culturally, aesthetically, historically and socially in a 21st century.

  • Narendra Mehra

Exclusive plants and flowers outside the Arrival hall of T2 Mumbai International airport. Very nice options and display. Maybe a bit expensive. Its an outlet which will not have many competitors in the vicinity. You normally get such plants at roadside nurseries in Mumbai. Worth a look. However the actual work of art is inside the T2 terminal hall and spread across the whole terminal. Outstanding.

While most airports go for a minimalistic approach to design. This is the polar opposite. The walls are adorned with some really eye catching murals. And some that raise social awareness too. Does help you spend time while waiting for your flight. Can help you save some money as you’ll be busy looking at these displays instead of spending time in the shops. Unique!!

Worth spending the layer over time looking at the art made by artists around India, from Kerala murals to renaissance paintings. Download the Jay He Museum app from Google Play Store, for better understanding of the context and details of the art and the artist.
