This gorgeous gallery made me sad. You can see that it once was iconic, but it's clearly no longer the case. Sad how such a beautiful gem lies in the heart of the city, in a part that is one of the busiest, but remains empty and cold. Looking forward to seeing what the new management revives it.

The gallery is very spacious. It’s not so far from the CBD, Noord taxi rank to be exact. There are very few outlets surrounding the gallery and for someone who is not a Joburg resident, the area around the gallery was intimidating to me. However, the collection in the gallery calmed me.

Good architecture for a museum. Great spaces and good lighting. Nice cafe. We went to the Andy Warhol exhibit and I would definitely recommend it. The area is fine to leave your car parked on the street, obviously empty or without valuables in sight.

Worth a visit but be warned! Beautiful old building turning into a ruin. Current exhibition "Waiting for Gebane" is a solo exhibition by the South African artist Senzeni Mthwakazi Marasela. Excellent exhibition. It has been hastily displayed

The Johannesburg Art Gallery is an art gallery in Joubert Park in the central business district of Johannesburg, South Africa. It is the largest gallery on the continent. As a major focus of urban regeneration programmes, the gallery

The gallery has different pieces illustrating different artists. The only problem is the maintenance as when we were there it was raining and there was water coming from the ceiling in different areas of the gallery

  • mandisa mpulo

The gallery is currently showing "The Art of Comics" featuring a historic and contemporary look at the work of artists from South Africa, the broader continent, France, Reunion island and more.

  • We've Come So Far

Hidden gem in the city. Beautiful architecture and the archive is full of amazing pieces. The only shame is the location as getting there is a bit of a hassle. It needs more government funding.

What an amazing experience at JAG, great art pieces but I feel the place is not advertised too much because during my high school years we never went there....what a nice place to visit....

  • Gary Smith

Wonderful quiet museum. Had a lovely time here. Get a taxi right to the front door if you are not sure where to go. The entrance is to the right side and just buzz the door to be let in.

  • Ahmad Shokr

Entrance is free to JAG I gave it 4 stars only because of the location, alas the neighborhood can be much nicer, and the gallery can stand to have bit more pieces but that in no way

  • Junia Mphahlele

This is a beautiful place but sadly the gallery looks bare and like a shadow of its former glory. Still a great place that needs some TLC and it will be back to its former glory.

  • Abiah Mahlase

Wonderful gallery. It does require one to be comfortable driving around Johannesburg CBD in order to get to the gallery. A coffee shop would be a splendid addition to the gallery.

  • Karabo Skosana

Great place very big and spacious with great arty pieces on display, very organized and the best thing of all it's that it's open on Sundays and entrance is free

  • tshepo ray

Jag is the best art gallery in gauteng..with the most collection from the great south african black artists.. …

  • Lebo Lottering

Great place lots of art that's being showcased however the caretaker needs to take care of the building and maintain it

  • VAIMA KARIO (Vaima Lord Kario)

Great space with a lot of potential. My experience was actually made better when I chilled out at Joubert Park.

  • Nonkululeko Mashinini

Beautiful museum with historic monuments. It is well kept and managed, although there could be an improvement
