Every year the Johannesburg Zoo visitor numbers increased to such an extent that parking became an urgency to alleviate the impact on residents as well as to ensure safety for zoo visitors. The Johannesburg Zoo’s R45 million parking building is expected to provide easier access for visitors coming by car to the zoo. The Zoo three storey parkade was designed to accommodate 710 cars and 15 buses. Special needs, parents with prams and wheelchair parking is available on the ground floor. City of Joburg supplied the funding for the parkade in 2014 to the value of R45 million. The project started in 2014 and completed in 2017. Visitors will be relieved from illegal car guards. Spill over parking on very busy days will still be able to utilise the Distong Museum of Military history parking as well as other parking areas on Erlswold Way and Jan Smuts. The intention is to grow visitor numbers to 800 000 per annum. Visitors can use the new parking starting from Wednesday 26 July 2017 till Monday 1 August 2017. The parkade will be closed on 2 August 2017 for the official launch but will be opened again at 14:00 for FREE parking. Parking fees: Buses R25 Cars R15

Visiting the Johannesburg zoo was the highlight of my visit to south Africa. It was a long walk to see different creatures but it was worth it. I had the opportunity to move around on my own, I saw lions and a lot of other animals. The green environment is next to none. I enjoyed every bit of my time. They also have stores for souvenirs, spots to eat food and drinks. On arrival, you are welcomed by those who would take your pictures to make your visit a memorable one. While there, you can use carts or bus as I did, but any option is good and you're assured to have loads of fun.

There will be people on the street wearing carguard vests claiming that the parking lott is full and that you should park on the street and give them R20 when you are done. First of all you shouldn't have to pay to park on a public road and secondly, the parking arcade has four stories of parking so the chances of it being full are quite minimal! You will pay the parking (R15 for the day) when you purchase a ticket at the ticket office.

Very good experience, previously and issue with the place was the parking, but it has been given a serious multi level upgrade. The lion area is massive and white lions are available. Pity about exotic animals like the polar bear, last visible in 2014, not being replaced..... all other animals are there and there seems to be constant, albeit, minor, upgrades to facilities. A few more restaurants would be great

In good condition. Lots of new renovation. Enjoyed the early morning walk about. Recommend early start to keep cool though at this time of year. Lots of food and drink stations around the Zoo too. Bit pricy at R 18 a Coke. Take your own if possible.

Great place to take the kid's A few places are under construction tho so not everything is open. No golf cart to rent so its a long walk. The animals seem to be in good shape. A bit on the over grow side and lack of some up keep. Still lots to see.

  • Paballo Deborah

A number of cages/areas were under renovations. The kids did not get to see most of the animals we had hoped they would see. Hopefully after all renovations, the trip will not be wasted. Nonetheless, the zoo is well kept and this is impressive.

  • Mpho Ditinti

The Animals are either not Visible or cages are empty. The Shops inside close quite early and the workers Are hardly visible or Around at all. Although there's enough Chairs and Free Roaming animals.. Gives one A sense of nature and Peace

  • Neo Lerefolo

A safe environment with a lot of security and the animals are under constant vetenerian care. They often host charity events or even let the public host their charity events on the premises. The last one I went to was the Nappy Run 2018.

Still a fantastic family day out. We saw SO MANY animals, the zoo is clean, staff are very friendly, and the parking is great. The only negative was the Amazon exhibit - it seemed very run down compared to how it looked a few years ago.

  • Jumoke Adebayo

Friendly parking lot attendants. Be sure to look out for the device with green light on the ceiling, this lets you know empty parking spots easily and saved you the stress of having to drive around looking for a free space

  • NF N

Very nicely done guys, ample parking, but don't drop your guard and be careless, cars still get stolen here, beware pick Pocketers, place you paid parking ticket in a safe place not next to your keys

  • Faaizah Ally

The Johannesburg Zoo is always a good place to take kids. It has been that way since I was a child. There's lots of walking and a large variety of animals to see. The staff are also quite helpful.

  • Abu Saffaanah

Safe and secure paid parking. Ample parking available. Parking bays seem too narrow if the parking is full considering that you coming with family, kids and things in your car.

  • Calvin Reddy

Lekker Zoo! Parking is nice and safe, plenty of animals to see and food stalls to eat at. Lovely day out with the family. Will always return to come and see the animals.

  • Bibi aaishah Gardee

Great parking without the harassers outside anymore. The zoo should provide the train or golf carts for cuatomers. Map.and.actual.layout not in sunc. Too.much walkgimg

  • Ashley Shub

Sad to see how this facility has been so badly run this Zoo is an absolute mess and run down. This used to be such a beautiful place to visit for a day visit.

  • SELLO SEBOTHOMA

The directory needs to be updated animals are hard to find however a zoo is a zoo always a good time to go especially with someone significant or the kids

  • Brandon Marriott

The zoo was in great condition, the animals looked in great shape too! Big ups to the staff, theres definitely something awesomely different JHBZoo

  • Daniel Marvin Van Der Merwe

Its nice for an outing, but JHB Zoo is too big, you walk yourself to death and most of the animals are hiding. In two minds regarding this review.

  • Philippa Van Wyk

Zoo Trot was oh so awesome, refreshing and early morning to stop and smell the roses, check out the animals and birds. Nature at its best ⚘ …

  • Roshal Orrie

Always love going to this Zoo. It's clean and the animals look well taken care of. The animals of the Amazon are amazing. A definite must see.

  • Paimaan B

The parking design is terrible. City should ask for their money back from whomever designed this parking building. …

  • Jennie Gauthier

I loved visiting this zoo. It was clean and tons of fun. Being from the U.S. I'm used to free zoos so I didn't like paying an entrance fee.

  • Rochelle Latchman

Bit of a mess I some places. But with the new changes allowing you to be closer to some of the animals is an awesome experience.

  • Raymond de Waal

They were closed when we wanted to visit about two weeks ago after my friends phoned and they confirmed that they were open...

  • Demi M

Well worth it. Just the map is confusing and theres not enough variety of foods, otherwise I loved it. Very well maintained.

  • Kelly Lynch

Parking lot is good. The exit can be a touch confusing though. Parking tickets get paid at the entrance with your zoo entry

  • Cameron Tait

Some of the enclosures are not maintained correctly. Better signage and info boards would be useful, however nice day out.

  • Antoon Hofman

Parking is poorly designed. Tip: if you're reverse parking on the first floor, don't rely on you parking sensors - LOOK!

  • hassen vally

Clean -service good -lacking a lot of animals-empty cages -needs more young animals-good.day out in the open with kid's

  • Mr du Preez

Nice improvement, even got lights to show you if parking is available or not, just a heads up R15 set fee for parking.

  • Jashwin Dayaram

When through for the festival of lights. The Sausage salon food stalls service was not too good and they had no stock

  • Christelle Havenga

Lots to see. A whole day eorth of an outing with the family. Food and drinks pricy and kids rides way too expensive

  • Nikolai Swartz

Always a fun experience. But some of the animals I think were in hibernation, because some of the cages were empty.

  • Satish Bahgoo

Very modern set up. Parking bays are freely available and there is no need to struggle like other places
