I was there as a substitute teacher in December 2016. I ended up going on a "Do Not Use" list for that school. It's something schools can do. I met with an district administrator who read me parts of report. He said that someone there, obviously someone there with credibility, stated that my supervision of the kids was loose to the point where there was concern about the kids' safety. I took this extremely seriously, even though I remembered having finished out the day as usual and that the kids' safety was NEVER a concern. But someone there had reported that it was, apparently. And then something seemed really wrong to me. How could someone have had a question in their mind about kids' safety, stood and watched and took notes about this alleged situation, and then done absolutely nothing about anything? It's not like there's a gray area. If you have a legitimate question in your mind about kids' safety, then you have to get someone to intervene immediately. Send in the Principal, or the V.P. Send the sub home and divide up the class. Call the police and have them come out and do something. There are a number of different options that anyone who truly had a genuine concern could have used. Really, that kind of situation is the most serious kind of emergency, but someone or some people, claiming to have this question, and then doing *absolutely nothing* to address it. I had some of the kids out in a kind of quad area which you can easily supervise from the inside as long as you are standing by the classroom door, which I did the whole time. After a while I noticed that the kids weren't really settling down and doing the reading they were supposed to, so I brought them all back in. It did occur to me that it was an awkward arrangement, not worth it and that I wouldn't do something like that again. I noticed that some of them were quarreling over where to sit and whatever, while the report used the word "fighting". Again, someone claiming a concern in some detail for kids' safety, with possible implications of violence, and then not only not intervening themselves, but failing to notify and/or convince anyone else to intervene. In fact, there was at least an hour or two left in the day after I brought the kids back in, which leaves plenty of more time where someone could have intervened. If you are a responsible teacher, aid assistant or administrator with any kind of credibility, do you truly leave kids with someone like that hour after hour!? Do you trust them to supervise the kids as they leave the class to go home which from a safety concern is probably the most sensitive times of the entire day?!?!?! Someone also stated that I wasn't "teaching standard" that day. This is kind of a headscratcher because teaching standard is definitely not an expectation for a one day assignment. Subs rely on lesson plans left by the teacher. In fact, I was following the lesson plan from the teacher, which included some subject work and also holiday arts and crafts for a lot of the day. This expectation about teaching standard has no basis in policy and obviously the supposed concern about kids' safety is untrue just on the face of it because no one intervened. (Or, which is even worse, did someone really, truly see a dangerous situation and then do absolutely nothing at all? Shouldn't that person have to answer for that??? I know for a fact there was no safety issue, because I was watching so I could do something if anything came up. But this person claims they saw something and essentially admits they just stood idly by while kids where in danger. The mind boggles.) I just don't know what to make of this combination of invalid and false claims, or the intention of the person(s) conveying these things to the district. I can't get inside the head of the person who conveyed these things to the district, but from my point of view, I feel like someone was just throwing mud, and that their behavior regarding this was distinctly toxic.
