So just under a year ago I was invited to this place and absolutely loved their food. Then as I continue to eat there and do events I became more and more disappointed!!! Had a party for my daughter there 30/40 people and took a section. I was very disappointed, long story short…. I had to rearrange the place for my guest in my dress and high heels with zero help from staff no matter how much I asked. The owners son said they are too busy! Food was served one hour late to my guests amongst so many things!! I didn’t complain to the owner. Bought food a few months ago and it was burned and tasted bitter! I was told they will replace it and they did a couple of weeks later but yet again bitter and the chicken was raw to my surprise, we couldn’t eat it…..again!! I didn’t bother to complain! We took a pause for a few months and decided to try them again but sadly we were yet again disappointed!! All the veggies were raw and no flavours. The broccoli was like from the garden to my plate. The pepper shrimp had no favour and didn’t even had a colour on it, it looks steamed. The carrots, cabbage and bora came from the garden in my steamed rice, absolutely nothing fried about that fried rice!! It was cabbage and cabbage and more cabbage and big hard pieces of cabbage. Sorry to say it was so disgusting to eat….no favours!! Don’t get me wrong….food used to be delicious and the owner is a great guy. I just don’t know what happened….maybe new management/chef….I don’t know but sadly I’m no longer spending my money here!!

We got a hotel room down the street at the courtyard hotel and it was about 7PM on Thursday night. We went here because Google said it was Caribbean food. It was no such thing. The food is Chinese food with a "Guyanese" twist. Unfortunately it was just American-Chinese food. And it was really bad American-Chinese Food at that. I got a combo with rice noodles and chicken. The Rice was completely inedible, it tasted like burnt Ash. The chicken was not great. The sauce that was used was just straight up Ketchup. The only thing that was palatable on the plate was the noodles, Unfortunately they had fragments of chicken bone throughout. Me and the other person with me both picked out 3 or 4 bone piece each. Not only was the food not great, but between the restaurant being run down and having visible water damage on the ceiling and Christmas decorations up (March). The restaurant was also completely devoid of any other customers. The only people who came in were friends of the waitress and just stood around talking for 30 minutes. But the thing that instilled the least amount of confidence was the fact the restaurant is called "Kalypso" hut with a K but the menu spelled "Calypso" special with a C. It's like this restaurant doesn't know what it wants to be. This was without doubt the worst Restaurant experience i have found in the Greater Toronto Area.

I decided to try this place as just an attempt to not eat some more fast food. I stopped in and had a look at the take out menu. I ended up ordering the chicken low mein. The place was pretty empty and bare upon entry, and I wasn't sure where to go to order so I just stood by the bar. But pretty promptly a nice lady came out and took care of me. My food was prepared quickly and I was back to work to eat my meal. Personally, the low mein wasn't what I thought it would be. It wasn't necessarily bad. Just wasn't what I was expecting. The chicken part of this low mein was actual chunks of dark meat chicken cut in to chunks. The problem was it was full of bones and the bones had shattered and basically contaminated the whole dish. It just became more of a pain to eat than it was worth. . again, the dish wasn't really that bad and the pepper sauce was super spicy which I enjoyed, but for the price point and all chipped bones in my noodles, I probably wouldn't order the same dish again. Still better than fast food.

Wish i would’ve took a photo of the food but unfortunately i didn’t get one. We ordered pepper shrimp that was not hot at all nor warm it’s like they reheated it real quick. Then we ordered the chicken and shrimp noodles and it was absolutely horrible. The chicken was thrown in it like if it was frozen then reheated. The noodles and the sauce tasted awful and nothing was fresh at all. The shrimp still had the tails on them which is not a pleasure when trying to enjoy your meal. I am very disappointed and definitely made the server aware and gave them back the rest of their food. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Hopefully they switch up cooks and then it might be better. For the price you pay everything should be cooked to order. And it wasn’t busy to say the least.

It's a good cheap restuarant, the lunch buffet is $7.99, between 12pm- 230pm, you can either eat in or take out from the buffet, this is in a commercial area, its a truck stop, food is alright and cheap, You get 6 items, noodles, chicken, fish, saute vegetable, and a spicy scrambled egg, its like a generic American style chinese food. I would go there if I was looking for a cheap deal for food that taste alright. Service is slow as there is only one person, but cant ask for much for that price, also it's a llbo so they have a range of beer and some hard liquor. And they have a range of Caribbean desert at the counter, you have to pay for, its not included in the buffet. Accessible right off 401 and dixie, large sitting arrangements, somewhat family environment, if you are on a budget and traveling with a large group or family this is an ideal place. Lots of cheap motels and inns in the area, parking is also free.

Never I repeat never go here for food. We’ve been going to all locations for over 25 years but this location has moved over 5 times and changed the spelling of there names a couple of times as well. Should have rung a bell for me considering the food and standards of this place has dropped to an all time low. We had a party of over 20 people and we received burnt rice, raw wonton meat, stale food all around. Owner was so rude in addressing the issue and made comments such as: there only one cook, that we were trying to eat free, that he closed the kitchen and hour ago but it was 10 o clock and we called ahead and asked if the kitchen was open which he replied yes. We spent over $300 dollars that night there and he had the audacity to say we wanted free food. The washrooms are in horrendous shape as well as the kitchen. Stay far away .

Have been here a few times , the restaurant recently increased the price for buffets, that’s okay . But I was surprised by there changes in service. Very poor nw . I asked some water and the girl at the counter got me bottles water , I requested her for tap water and she was like I have to go and get the tap water from the counter . They don’t even have the courtesy to serve water on table since I don’t pay for water . Haven’t seen this culture in any of the good restaurant . I came with a group of friends for lunch and all of us had to go to there counter get water and had to walk again if we need refill. That’s the worst thing that could happen to you when you go out for lunch with your friends at this place . So poor. I hope the management take this matter seriously .

Take the girl out of the country but you can't take the country out of the girl...in this case -THE FOOD! Go on an adventure and visit this Caribbean restaurant that is mainly Guyanese dishes with influences of Chinese food. All blended to create a unique combination of spices, flavourings and culture. Caribbean, Guyanese and Trinidad music can be heard always. It is a clean restaurant with - of course- Caribbean decor. The hospitality of the staff is warm and friendly. My favourites are the fried rice and chowmein. I salivate just thinking about it and always overeat. They also offer catering for events such as Caribana, weddings, parties etc. A must visit place for a well rounded food experience.

I love the Chow Mein. The photo of of the Beef Chow Mein, it’s delicious ….This place has the most delicious food such that I am a regular customer. I am writing this review because I ordered through ubereats, and I was surprised to see that this restaurant is rated a 4.4 which is not an accurate representation of the place. I am blown away by the food and the service. I requested hot sauce and was given a generous portion. I am so grateful. Go check out this restaurant y’all. Their food is tasty and their hot sauce is second to none. I am from a Caribbean background consequently great hot sauce, is a must with our meals. Thank you kalypso Hut !!!!!!

  • Syed

I’ve dined at this restaurant and the food is always delicious. The pepper sauce has a special flavour to it that goes with the food. Service and staff are good, and so are prices. Owner is friendly and cares about the service his customers receive. The menu has a variety of dishes to choose from. They offer a variety of snacks that are considered Guyanese favourites. The setting is a kind of mix between a restaurant and a bar so the music can tend to be too loud sometimes if you’re just there to have a meal; however, the staff and owner is bound to make your visit an enjoyable one, so be sure to let them know if something is making you uncomfortable.

Please, if you don't know HOW TO DO YOUR JOB,....CHANGE IT! I asked for a glass of wine, and the lady didn't even know what is was! I had to call the owner ti explain him what I wanted, and then they asked me the green pass o proof of vaccination. And until here, is even legit....but wait: I'm fully vaccinated with Vax Card, QCODE and Pass Card since I'm from Manitoba and truck driver (so I travel a lot) and they said that they never seen something like this so they cannot accept it!! OF COURSE YOU DIDN'T SEE IT, BECAUSE IM FROM MANITOBA AND YOU'RE FROM ONTARIO!!! But that doesn't mean that isn't valid, you dumb!!

  • Victor Persaud

First time going there for the Lunch Buffet... very reasonably priced considering the very limited selection. The pepper-sauce & the fried fish were great. The owner behaves as if he is completely clueless & have no idea what to do with his time... perhaps he should invite chef Gordon Ramsay to teach him the basic principles such as offering your customers a “glass of water”.. like they do in every other Buffet. Perhaps because the glass of water is Free, they rather ignore the customer. Just a small advice from me: being polite & courteous is very important in today’s customer service environment...

  • Hardkor Style

I like the place food was great, I have the chicken & shrimp fried rice & noodles, it looks like a place to bring the kids while having a drink with friends. Lots of people were there with the kids. They also have the option to parties. Nice tables area & dance floor.

Was invited to a party at Kalypso Hut. Half of the space was booked for the party. There was a dance floor, plenty of seating, clean washrooms, a buffet table, and the customer service was excellent. The owner Paul was also present and helping with the food. I can appreciate it when I see the owner working hard and making sure everything is going well. My only complaint would be that there is minimal parking but otherwise great experience!

This place has to be a joke to call themselves a Caribbean restaurant. Never seen special chicken fried rice with 3 tiny pieces of chicken on top. I thought it was an accident until I seen the other box was identical. The shrimp was an insult to be called pepper shrimp. I recieved half a container full and had no flavor. I was even denied extra pepper sauce even though I ordered quite a bit of food. I honestly can't believe this place is in business still. Never again. Avoid at all costs

  • River R

Restaurant needs reevaluation on customer service, quality of food, and size portion. My order of fried Rice was hard, found a string of beans that weren't chopped properly, chicken on top was cut extremely small. Pretty Embarassing as this is Not what you're use to seeing from any guyanese restaurant. If you want to keep your customers happy and those customers coming back you'll have to address the items listed above. I dont think I will return here.

We ,went to Kalypso Hut, when I entered through the Door. They do not have any signs saying watch out for the first step or anything like that. I fell down and I asked someone for some ice to put on my left ankle it felt like I twisted my ankle. I bruised my right knee when I fell down so I was icing both of my legs. The owner was there and he did not come over to even see how I was doing. And did not even give a discount.

SO RUDE ON THE PHONE Just called to inquire the cost of their medium tray chicken fried rice and vegetable chow mein, I was speaking to a lady and she said it’s $50 each. Then some man came on the line and was so RUDE “you want to order” I said I am inquiring first, but somewhere else listed it a bit cheaper, then he said VERY RUDELY “THEN GO ORDER THERE” and hung up. Disgusting behaviour. That’s how you treat inquiring customers.

  • Jaspal Brar (Jesse)

Well too bad for East Asian and brown folks since my visit on Saturday as soon as I entered the store the employee working there kind of yelled UBER. Well every brown guy doesn’t come to deliver for Uber I had to dine in for dinner & instead of greeting me for what I’m there for I was asked UBER. That’s rude customer service, should be treated better. The food wasn’t bad at all freshly made & was my first time trying there.

  • Richard McIntosh

Nice people, food was really good, flavors are really well developed, vegetable were nice and fresh, not overcooked. The wonton soup had a really nice, deep, fresh earthy flavor, fried wontons were perfectly prepared, not undercooked or over seasoned, and the house special mixed fried rice was absolutely delicious, perfectly seasoned, and savory. Definitely will return next time I'm spending an evening in town. Great job.

  • Yvonne King

First time eating there, I tried their fried rice and lomein which was pretty good. It was an early Saturday evening and it seemed like they were getting ready for a function or something because someone started vacuuming the place while we were eating. The atmosphere felt more like a small banquet hall than a restaurant and I kind of felt as though I was intruding. I think I will give it another try though.

  • Eva Accounting

We ordered bbq chicken and fried rice, it tasted AWEFUL! It seemed like old food reheated, chicken was dry and rice had the texture like it was going bad. We felt sick after eating this garbage! Never going back and telling friends / family my experience ! No pictures becuz we threw it all out.

Food is ok at best. Today was the second time I had visited, I wasn't sure where the smell or taste came from but the overpowering flavor was cigarette, stale cigarette. Probably, will not return. I really don't enjoy posting negative reviews but the cigarette smell and taste was too much. I asked one of the other people I was with and they could also smell and taste the same thing.

Pre covid, no issues, nice portions good food and the buffet was great. Since covid tho, iv ordered the special with the bbq chicken on top and both times got the smallest pieces of chicken iv ever got from a restaurant, nothing like the pictures from the review below me. I would be fine with that, maybe you get bigger pieces if you dine in? wont be a third time for me tho

I’ve ordered from uber eats here several times. Each time I ask for extra peppers sauce and each time they give me one in total. The food is pretty good but they are too stingy on the pepper sauce. You have to beg and plead for more than one. If you want to get more than one don’t order on Uber eats. You need to go in person to get on your knees in front on them and beg

  • Rose H

Ordered a plate of pepper shrimps and only got 7 shrimps on the plate...never seen that happen. The gentleman that was singing karaoke was so boring and the songs he sang made me contemplate why I didn't just stay home and eat dhal and rice. Never coming back here again the food used to be good not it isn't. All the portions are small better to go to Caribbean Heat.

The food is very good here. I attended a family function couple weeks ago. I have since returned to eat couple times. The service is quite good and the location is easy to get to. Try the fried chicken and any one of the rice dishes. The owner Paul is always there to great you personally and professionally. I recommend visiting asap.

  • Mustafa al rubai

I wouldn't even give it a one star. Buffet options are only 6 items. 90% of it isn't good. I was getting a plate to go, and the owner didn't want me to put only one item in my plate. He said " you can't do that, you can only take a bit of everything." Which is waste cuz the rest of the stuff that he has aren't good at all!

  • Anees Khokhar

The chicken fried rice should be called fried rice, barely any chicken in it. It used to be tasty now it’s bland. Cabbage is no longer an ingredient in the original OG recipe I used to love and enjoy. Been a huge fan for decades, sadly it will end today. I should do a charge back on my credit for services not rendered.

The polouri was amazing the chicken fried rice was great but I was missinformed because I asked for fried chicken and was told to order the special chicken which was bbq chicken and that seemed like it had ketchup on it. So not that great after all. But it was the first time and I will give it a second chance

Everything I ordered was terrible. It looked okay but felt and tasted really really bad. I don’t like to waste food but I threw everything out and just stayed hungry for the night. If you don’t believe me and still want to try it, take a small order first so you don’t waste your money like I did.

  • Devo Shah

Nice place not to busy to sit relax and down a couple cold ones or have a guyanese chinese meal on a weekday evening. They play a good tracklist of 90s Indian classics that will have you staying longer. Service is extremely slow to place orders and reorders. Would be nice if they hired someone.

  • Manuel Wagner

Never again 23$ for a small plate of chicken choke instead of rice I ordered fries but got charged for both and a 0.33 can coke. Big advertising lunch buffet but no buffet because holiday. In the time I ate there 3 guests leave because no buffet. All over all food was ok but the rest

  • Eric Labayne

We came and waited for seating but the owner rudely reminded us we should tip because he experienced from some customers. Then we noticed the food we used to order is no longer that good so we told him and he got mad. Turned out he have a new cook. We will never come back any more.

  • Johnny Luy

Delicious food for an excellent price if you're going for their all-you-can-eat lunch buffet(I highly recommend it!) ... My issue is that when I placed an order for pickup, the portion was very stingy and disappointingly minimal. I recommend you dine in rather than take out.

  • Diana Rajgopaul

The owner is very friendly, and the food is great. I dare not enter the washroom, I'm scared of how gross it may be. You can rent this place out for parties - it includes a dj! Though the food is good, the portion is small compared to other guyanese style chinese food.

  • Arfa Ally

I didn't even want to give it a star but had to to leave a review not a good place the owner is a prick very cheap not even a glass of water with your meal and he has not customer service skills what so ever. I would have had a better time at the burger king next door

Been wanting to try this place for a while. I ordered the chicken in the ruf. Oh man, is the chicken ever so dry. Tough to chew. I think it's been refried more than once. Cassava pone: $3.50 A piece. Rice would be the only thing I'd buy from here if I had no choice.
