I love that Amtrak at Union Station gives me access to multiple major cities without the stress of driving however there are issues at this station. The first is a waiting room issue its is too small and fills completely up right before the train arrivals. For the size of the metro area it definetly needs to be expanded. Second, is the lack of comfort and effieciency in the waiting room. The only seating is original wooden benches placed in the center of the room. They are hard, have no cuishoning, and do not allow everyone a seat. There is plenty of space along the blank pictureless walls for more seating but there is none. People often have to stand. Adding to that there are little to no outlets for charging, and no monitor in the room about train arrivals and departures. Third, there is only one narrow doorway in and out of the room so you often bump into people trying to enter the room as you are exiting and vice versa. Fourth, the waiting room is far from the discusting Union Station bathrooms. Fifth, the check in and waiting room are even farther from the actual trains and the walk between them is outside. It is covered but the rain and wind easily blows in on you. Sixth, once you reach the end of the walk you must go down a long stairway or wait on the singular very slow elevator. There is ample room to add another elevator but this has not been done. Then once you reach the train level it is uncovered. I've been rained on before. There are 2 things that are redemeing to me about this station. You do feel safe due to the security guards located around Union Station and the actual train experience meets standards. I also understand that some of these issues are out of their hands due to funding and the historic nature of the building.

Amtrak review- If you are elderly, disabled, have babies or are pregnant I would not recommend riding the train. They don’t do priority seating. There is extreme disorganization boarding and deboarding the train. It may be faster to let able-bodied people push through to the front of the line like a bunch of savages but what does it say about an organization that allows the disadvantaged to get pushed to the back? I’m breastfeeding 2 babies and wasn’t able to get seats together because my husband got stuck trying to get all the luggage on so we ended up sitting in the luggage car for the whole trip just so I could sit with my babies. The conductor recommended this instead of asking someone to move seats. Since we sat by the door the whole time you’d think we’d be the first ones off the train, but nope people were already lining up an hour before we arrived and we weren’t able to get in through the line to get all of our bags and get off the train. When I complained to the manager he didn’t seem to care at all. Then an 80 year old woman with her disabled son came up to complain because they were the last ones to get off the train. Love the train for transportation but have no desire to get on that mess again. Get it together.

Could not be more disappointed in Amtrak today…. I dropped my wife and 2 year old son off at the Kansas City Union Station to take a train. Prior to arriving at the station we called and spoke with Amtrak and confirmed they would have a baggage storage area. This was to confirm what Amtrak already has on their website which also said they have storage to drop off luggage until the train arrives. While waiting in the Amtrak waiting area my wife was very uneasy and felt threatened by several people there. One of which sat down beside her and my son in a near empty room and just stared at them. When she told the Amtrak rep at the kiosk that she felt very uneasy by the people in the waiting area who were cussing and seemed to be on drugs, and could he please help her move her bags away from them, he replied only that he could not help her at all. He didn’t offer ANY help at all! When I called Amtrak Police to ask if they could please check on them, they replied that they don’t have anyone on site at that station… Union Station at one of the largest cites in the country.. This is ridiculous. How do you expect normal people to ride your train if when they tell you they don’t feel safe and ask for help you ignore them?!

Did a round trip to St. Louis and back. Getting to St. Louis was fine, staff was nice and communicative. However, from St. Louis to Kansas City was terrible. ETA is 9:30, and somehow we are sitting just past the Independence Amtrak station…stuck. How do they close an essential part of the railroad tracks and 1) not know and 2) have no plan? We are literally less than five minutes past the Independence station, 20 minutes away from Union Station. They said it would be at least 30 minutes for them to get their “new route” approved + the 20 minutes it gets to Union Station. We are literally stuck so close to our destination and will not arrive until over 1.5 hours after our ETA. Mind you, Amtrak just said that they knew about this closure. So how the hell…do you let this happen?!? I decided to take the train despite people telling me it would be easier to drive, because I’d never been on a train before. Well congrats Amtrak, this will be my first AND last train ride. Let’s hope it’ll only be 1.5 hours late and not double or triple that like the nightmares they’ve created for other people before.

Me and my physically disabled mother stood in line to check our bags from 6:45am to 7:15 am for a 7:45am train to Chicago, bag checking is until 7am; however the worker who was supposed to check our bags was not doing his job. At 7:15am a worker came out claiming that the bagchecker was doing his job, despite over a dozen people waiting there since 6:30am who witnessed the exact opposite, including a women who had children and 5 suitcases and was told essentially, Owell take it on board yourself or check it late and wait 24 hours to get your belonging. There are no signs that clearly state what to do or when, and essentially no workers directing the public despite the two previously mentioned who were only seen for a few minutes each. Currently waiting to board and supposedly there will be enough room for all those who couldn't check their bags to store them on board. We will see... Highly disappointed in the service I recieved. I would give no stars for this neglect of customers if I could.

This review is for Amtrak trip KC-Chicago, then Chicago-Poughkeepsie NY round-trip in mid-October 2022. Wow! What an experience! It was new to me, so exciting of course. Everything went well for all boarding, train ride, food, etc. Staff was very friendly throughout. I rode coach for 3 legs of the journey, and a 'roomette' for Poughkeepsie-Chicago. Both were great. One perk of the roomette was that you can use the VIP lounge in Chicago Union Station during a layover. I highly recommend. The ride is a little rough at times, and could not really sleep, but the view and perspective from the train was so cool. Also, Chicago to New York City route follows cities along Lake Erie that were really interesting to roll into. The price in coach was very reasonable - a little high for a room, though. Only negative is that you walk a long long way in both KC and Chicago to board! p.s. I will rate KC Union Station itself separately!

My medications was taken from my bag on Monday riverroad train i was traveling from stlmo to KCMO The male conductor wouldn't let me keep my rollator walker and baggage near my person.the train was not full as offered as a reason . He was irritated because I arrived at 0859. I was not informed that needs to arrive 45 minutes early. My ticket was clearly labeled disability . Review your voice recordings. I made the change Sunday morning for the Monday 0915. Check your loss and found or tapes. I have MS and the medication was metroprolol ER 50 MGS, ALPRAZOLAM 50MG, TRAMALOL 50 MGS, Tizanidine 4mgsans, & loratadine 10 MGS medications pkage in a pill container, placed in brown mail envelope, scheduled 2 drugs and blood pressure medication in dispense bottles plus placed in a ziploc freezer bag. Not happy and I anxiously await your response. Respectively, Betty J Conley

My girlfriends and I had a girls weekend planned since April for this weekend September 27th and we were planned to leave at 4pm. Showed up at union station to check in and was informed that the train broke down in St. Louis this morning at 8am. Was not notified, no text, no email NOTHING!!!! And the teller was very incompetent and didn’t inform us of anything going on. We asked what was going on, not knowing because we have never had this experience before and he informed us there was a bus coming between 5-7 pm tonight but couldn’t tell us an exact time and told us we wouldn’t arrive in Herman until 12am -130am. We asked if we would get a refund after having to ride the bus instead and he told us no! So instead we have to drive the entire way if we want to continue our vacation!.......... very disappointed in Amtrak services!!!!!!

I tried the Amtrak from Union Station. The station itself is very nice, one of the few major stops that has lots of amenities for travelers. The biggest downside is parking. I wish Amtrak/Union Station partnered to validate parking for Amtrak customers, even if it was just a discount. $23/day at the attached parking garage is a bit expensive, and we all know downtown KC has limited options for parking already, especially overnight. So try and get dropped off / picked up by a friend / Uber. Pro tip for Amtrak users, try the BidUp feature for your journey, especially if your train doesn't show that it's very full. Potentially upgrade your coach seat to business class for $9.

We went to Kansas City Union Station , Nelson Atkins Art Museum Jazz Museum .We end up watching bowl games on day 2 at the Kansas City Power & Light area. It was nice to be able to park our vehicles at Union Station & then take a free street tram to these different areas & back again. The street tram on weekends runs to 1 or 2 am. It was a very good time we'll spent with family while visting the KC area. We stayed in Overland Park. Embasy Suites which was priced very reasonably for all the amenities. We We able to get a multi day rate which was nice. Over all it was a great couple days touring the some POI of Kansas City on Holiday time.

We were supposed to depart at 7:24am and didn’t depart until 11:11am because the train was super late ruining the day we had planned in the city of our drop off destination. On top of that there was no communication through email or the app that the train would be late until about 20 minutes before it was scheduled to arrive. So basically we got at Amtrak at 6:30am and had to wait that whole time. Also, the speed of the train is slow as hell and it stinks. Irritated isn’t the word! If you don’t mind being late and annoyed then the train is for you but they’ll never get another dime from me. Their first impression was a total fail.

On time arrival 10:00 last night SW Chief. Had to drag luggage up two flights of stairs exposed to elements(slow elevator packed). Long walk to AMTRAK entrance exposed to elements when a simple wall would help.. Restrooms were blocked by event in main hall, so went to little-known ones downstairs-locked. What a poor welcome presented to arriving rail passengers after so much spent, thru pasengers de-train here and also get an inhospitable experience. The long chute to stairs should be enclosed, even a bit of heat and there should be escalators down to the platform. Come on Union Station, get it right!

Took a trip on the Amtrak from KC to STL with my infant child. It was clean, calm, and a breeze. The staff were verrrrry helpful and nice. The seats were a bit uncomfy but I didn't have high expectations for such a short and affordable trip. They had a place to order food/snacks but they were out of alot of things so I settled on a pre-made deli sandwich. It wasn't the best but It was enough to hold me over.Again, I ddnt have high expectations....I had a pretty decent experience and I think everyone should try a train trip atleast once or twice in their lifetime.

  • Cody Woods

Horrid experience. Would give Amtrak 0 out of 5 stars if possible. Boarded a train in Kansas City, MO headed to St. Louis, MO at 4PM and was supposed to arrive at 9:30PM; we traveled one hour via rail and then stopped. We were informed that we should get moving within the hour and are still sitting here at 2:32AM. I called customer to support to ask about a refund being that the train has been on track with us sitting here for 9 hours and was informed that there is nothing the can do. Don’t waste the money......Just drive

This is a very interesting place to visit in Kansas City, even if you do not plan to take the train. Lots of interesting architecture to see and the station frequently has some sort of exhibition going on. The station is also one of the primary spots to board the free trolley that takes you through downtown Kansas City. Finally, the station is also across the street from an incredible war memorial and a neat reflecting pool. Come in the early evening for some great pictures.

  • Shari Albright

My friend and I took the River Runner from Union Station to Hermann for the weekend and it was flawless! We boarded without issue in KC and left promptly at the time quoted! No stress! We were able to sit back, relax, enjoy snacks and rid ourselves of the stress of traveling!! The staff were super friendly and tolerant of our giddiness! I love this tradition and am excited to ride the train again soon!!

  • Pete the Traveler

The Union Station is a fabulous building, and this review is not of the building as that would easily receive 6 stars. However, the Amtrak section is crowded, there is little management of people who have disabilities, and it’s a free for all when the train arrives. Otherwise, decent waiting area, bearable configuration, and somewhat friendly staff.

  • Shana Keeler

Based solely on customer service. They sit there and look at you like you asked the answer to what is life? No, I just want to know where overnight parking is so I can make my train. The staff is rude, unhelpful, and downright disrespectful. If at all humanly possible avoiding this station in the future.

  • Jennifer Day

Space was clean. Amtrak staff were friendly, helpful and clear communicators. Bathrooms were clean and easy to find. Shops were not open yet, but looked nice enough. Very cool to see the Union Station building and appreciate all the details in old light fixtures, door handles, ceiling details, etc.

  • Liberty Missouri

I absolutely would NEVER RECOMMEND THIS TRAIN!!!! THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE WAS HORRIBLE THEY PRE AUTHORIZED MY CARD FIVE TIMES AND WOULDN'T CANCEL THE AUTHORIZATIONS I HAD TO WAIT A WHOLE ENTIRE FREAKING WEEK FOR MY MONEY BACK, WHICH I WAS GOING OUT OF TOWN I WAS OUT FIVE HUNDRED BUCKS !!! HORRIBLE

  • KEITH JOHNSON

It's awesome the strain I was supposed to be on the night before last canceled so Amtrak paid for me to stay in a hotel overnight N bought a meal the only thing I didn't like to well was there was not a Starbucks inside the Union Station in Kansas City …

  • wendy casebier

The guy assigning seats (which is completely pointless) had to check my ticket a 3rd time. Talked down to me after HE was the one who assigned me a seat HE had already given away. Just let people seat themselves and check our tickets on the train before leaving. ONE AND DONE

  • Reed Radcliffe

Awesome vintage railway station. They have reworked this place into a cool restaurant venue with the Amtrak waiting area and ticketing office. This city did it right. We've come through here on several occasions and there are always some new improvements and things to see.

  • Roger Day

This marvelous traveling exhibition of Mayan art and culture will move on to other venues after March 12th, so catch it before it does. It's a very interactive, multimedia and multigenerational experience including many recent discoveries made possible by LIDAR mapping.

  • Steven G

Matt at Amtrak was amazing. Missed my connecting train to Chicago and he immediately made it his business to help get me on the very next train less than an hour away. Definitely made me feel like a priority when he didn’t have to. Give that guy a raise!!

  • Christina Mason

I would not recommend Amtrak service as an acceptable mode of transportation. My four year old son and myself got stuck on the train (not moving) for 5 hours! Making our 4 hour trip a 9 hour trip! And they would not let us off. Unacceptable!

  • Greg Bem

Apparently this is the second largest train station in the country? I'm not so sure, but it is a nice space. Was under major construction when I stopped by, which kind of dampened the experience, but I could imagine it bustling.

  • Matt Robertson

First time ever riding a train. We took it from KC to St Louis. Very safe, fun and enjoyable. The staff was friendly. They serve snacks for small fee. Spacious, comfy seats, bathrooms were clean. Definitely 5 stars.

  • Les Bowen

Least organized boarding. Passengers were not directed to seats or cars, leading to mass pandemonium and confusion. On the plus side, the day staff was very courteous and accommodating of our temporary baggage hold.

  • Luis Paez

This train station is beautiful. Amtrak trains run incredibly slow and stop too often. An 11 hour drive from KC to Albuquerque took 23 hours. I was not in a hurry but my back killed me after this trip.

  • Jessica Jones

We love Union Station and all the things to do there! Science City, the planetarium, special events, the restaurants, etc. We have been members for a couple years now and will continue to be each year.

  • Brian Stump

Beautiful building, but the car centric experience completely ruins it. The parking lot destroys the front landscape, and the payment meters and parking signs are an embarrassment to public spaces.

  • Sophie Venus

Beautiful architectural, and well-researched exhibit. Kids are free, so don’t expect much peace. They do like do mark-up items a lot, $30 for a pair of socks 150% price increase. At your own risk

  • Jody Perry

So Awesome so good to see everyone out and enjoying Union Station. The train stations set up inside are a must see. Please go visit if you want to see something amazing. …

  • Chetan Belur

Union station decoration in Christmas is so awesome. There's mini train ride for kids. They have very elaborate Christmas cribs as well. And several Christmas trees of different sizes.

  • Angela N

The southwest chief is garbage. It's consistently late and forced me to miss my transfer. I have to wait in Kansas City for 7 hours. Clearly there is poor communication between trains.

  • Kelley Sanford

This city is amazing! We are loving living here. Union Station and the Crown Center are great places to visit at Christmas. Country Club Plaza is all lite up with Christmas lights.

  • Tequila Turentine

The train was awesome but the stairway to heaven is not. I have a real bad knee. The elevator was jammed pack. Thats means it took me almost 30 thirty minutes to get up the steps.

  • J Akhtar

What's not to love? Great BBQ. Great people. Midwest hospitality. Great restaurants. Short rush hour. A great zoo. Works of fun. Oceans of fun. A great City.

  • Amber Lank

Amtrak is fast and reliable. They let me know what is going on and when departing. The train sways alot but other than that it is fast and reliable.

  • Marisa Tejeda

Very kind workers and super helpful for first time Amtrak users. Thank you for your patience and working during the pandemic. You are appreciated.

  • Kou Jacobs

Sure, it's beautiful. Be sure to stop by the bathrooms if you want to get harassed by sanitation staff about which set of toilets you're using.

  • Mallory Peterson

Terrible communication between Amtrack and their customers. Thanks for letting us know 10 minutes early that our departure was delayed 5 hours!

  • Danielle Baird

Trainer 2 hours late but it's okay because I was 2 minutes late arriving it's a nice place to sit down and look at new things a weekly thing am

  • Jesse Goodeyon

Supposed to have a arrival of 10:30pm. Delayed 7 times. Still hasn’t Arrived, leaving this review at 4:18am. Place is past being a joke.

  • Daniel Warmuth

Beautiful building. Surprisingly clean. They could work on the efficiency of the boarding process, but it all worked out

  • William J

I like it, it had a few food places and a nice old train station. It even has facts of how they built the old station.

  • Alan Leggett

Way too long of a walk from the train into the station for someone with asthma and C.O.P.D. should have a shuttle.

  • Mimi Morris

Very Beautiful place, I wish they would put more shop and longer hour being open from 9-5 been on the weekend.

  • Richard Batchelor

Nice historic station. Wide open spaces. Nice steak restaurant inside. Small gift shop also located inside.

  • Steve Hellmann

I enjoy the museum and the model railroad. Amtrak services are acceptable but they seem a bit disorganized.

  • Miguel Salmeron

Amigos lo que pasa que ami me gustó mucho porque es un buen lugar y ciudad tranquilo que vives agusto

  • Nathan Richardson

Clean and full of interesting historical photos and stories. Beautiful building and good parking.

  • Pere Ozogu

Lots of holiday cheer. Warm atmosphere with the essence of old wood/charm. Lots of art and decor.

  • JJ And

Nice place. Maybe would be more comfort but.. Its not bad at all. Like the old station miniature.

  • Ron Jackson

Train is affordable, comfortable, and fun. Add business class and you get drinks and newspapers.
