Do you need a magical place? The Knights of Malta Keyhole is a truly enchanting and mysterious place. As you approach this unassuming keyhole on the Aventine Hill, little do you know the extraordinary sight that awaits you. As you peer through the keyhole, a breathtaking view of the Vatican comes into focus. It's as if you've discovered a hidden portal into another world. The juxtaposition of the ancient keyhole and the grandeur of St. Peter's Basilica in the distance is awe-inspiring. The Knights of Malta Keyhole offers a unique and captivating perspective, blending history, intrigue, and beauty all in one. It's a testament to the wonders that can be found in unexpected places. A visit to this mystical keyhole is a must for anyone seeking a touch of magic and a glimpse into the secrets of Rome.

If you want to go off-the-beaten-path and away from the regular Rome attractions, then this is the 'key' to your answer. The third attempt of getting here was lucky, as in the previous two we came too late, at around 6 PM, and the queue was too long. My suggestion is to go in the morning, before noon, because the wait will be around 15 minutes. The view of St. Peter's Basilica can be seen much better in person that what the camera can do. Especially not in a few seconds since you're not alone in line. There is no entrance fee, but be mindful and don't sit there for too long to take pictures.

People in the queue are incredibly selfish and obsessed with trying to take a picture that will likely not turn out well through the keyhole (which is almost impossible in the evening) when they should just admire the view and move on. Some people would stand there for like 10 minutes when 20-30 people were behind them waiting. I would only go really early in the morning otherwise better to see the view of the city from the Orange grove beside, or go to the church in the evening to listen to the Gregoria chanting of the Vespers which is so beautiful.

Neat set-up…but the need for everyone to be Insta-famous kills the vibe…three or four folks walk up at a time, each person tries to figure out how to get the phone to focus through a long “keyhole”. Seriously kids, share one photo amongst your group, you’ve been there for ten minutes! The three adults immediately in front of us (no attempts at photos) took less than a minute total. Oh well, I’ve since had a wine and am back in Italy mode…like most landmarks, get here early to avoid the crowds.

This was a wonderful unique experience. My background in Maltese so it was a must do for me. The line was long though. It’s free, but you’ll need to wait maybe 30 mins. Nothing really around this area so make sure you are self set. Once you look through that keyhole you’re transported to a Is this real of make-believe moment in time. Just amazing. Wish I went early in the morning so I could have more than the 30 seconds to look (didn’t want to hold up the people waiting behind me).

Interesting task in Rome. Taking a picture through a Keyhole. Not something you do very often, haha. Definitely worth it. The line can be long, but got lucky with a guitar player. Taking the picture can be tricky so be ready, dont make people behind you way for too long, especially if its after 5pm.

LOL walked right past it twice because I was expecting to see a huge queue. Nobody there but me at 8am on a Thursday. If you're expecting the basilica from a phone camera, you're going to be disappointed (see my shot). But the beauty you see with your eyes is lovely. Plus the neighborhood is lovely.

This place can get very crowded and you can get to wait a long time to get your camera pointed through the key hole. Next to this was the Orange gardens that looked great at Sunset. Make sure you visit just before closing time otherwise no sunset pics from the gardens.

Keyhole on Aventine hill with a picturesque view of the dome of Saint Peter's Basilica. You may need to wait in line to get a view. The keyhole is difficult to look though; it's quite small... But I bet it has a great personality.

This was such a nice experience to visit! Going super early in the morning (8am) there are no tourists and you can have all the time you want looking through the keyhole! And the nearby park makes a nice little stop afterwards

The view is great only problem is the queue and you don't get to long to admire it as so many people inpatiently waiting behind. Taking a picture is very difficult. Worth going to when your close by. About 15 people in front of me but just as I got there 2 tour groups turned up making a queue of about 40 people behind me

There's quite a walk from the station to here, but it's a beautiful way to peek at The Vatican. There's also a garden nearby with a majestic treeline and a fuller view of Vatican and Rome ruins. There was also a street musician the time I visited, so the music added to the vibe.

This is NOT a 5 star stop. It's different and you won't forget it though. The nearby parks have views of the whole city. There's a church or two as well. Maybe allow one hour. I went at the height of August tourism (ugh!) and this side trip has almost nobody there.

Knights of Malta keyhole/Aventine keyhole, an amazing experience, although the queue might be long, even in the late hours of the evening, but it’s worth visiting. You will be impressed bye what lights on the other side of the keyhole!

Qui si trova il famoso"buco della serratura". È la serratura del portone del giardino appartenente all'ordine dei cav. Di malta. Attraverso la serratura si scorge distintamente la cupola di s.pietro che dista in linea d'aria circa 3km

Not much people so it was very fast visit but if you want very good picture from the key hole you need a professional camera. I have s OnePlus 9 pro and couldn't take the"perfect key hole pic", but amazing view!

  • Klaudia Hufnágel

Really cute place on the hill next to beautiful parks. The view is amazing in the hole.

Wake up early and go to avoid the queue. Its a nice walk around the location. But basically you look through the keyhole, nice photo, but that's it. Was it built on purpose like this?
