Sadly, no Stars. It's too much! and You're Wrong! are memorable rude and pushy responses I experienced. Oh, and even though I was dressed well and acted respectful, they are unapologetic and “feel uncomfortable is the lame excuse because they just cannot admit they could be in the wrong”. Ego driven or what! The context of my story is below, yet I've now changed my purchases to stores like Mephisto (they sell Birkenstock, Olang, Rieker and more), Tiramisu, and SoftMoc. Story with context I was there to for a 2nd time in one week to return a pair of shoes I wore around home during 30-day trial period and were perfectly clean, enclosed in its original box and was also ready to try a light & dressy winter shoe/boot, much different than the heavier winter duty boot I purchased within the past month that I liked (have since returned those too due to their rudeness). Is returning again for another purchase an insult? a crime? Outside of other helpful associates like Liam, Sales associate Dominique was not receptive to me during a previous visit; what is it with her? Although it was elder Mr. Kunitz who helped me with the return, it went quickly enough but I sensed he was not too pleased about doing a return - well at least I returned them in A1 condition. Afterwards, I went over to the display area, zoning in on two prospective models. I picked them up and soon after a kind female employee asked if I had been helped. I mentioned the exact size I needed for both in hand. I sat down on the circular seat that allows 4-5 customers to sit around while trying on shoes. I found it took her a while and became aware that she already was serving others but she never mentioned that. Okay, all good, I'll be patient and decided to look at another two on display. To keep this short, I asked to try on four different light duty winter booties in all, and she assisted me with three. Because they didn't quite feel right and before I spend $2-400 of my dollars, I wanted to ensure I try those other two. In between trying on the shoes: 1) Younger Mr. Kunitz (owner) walked near me and as he did was two days prior when I did a previous purchase, seemed pushy with his question, "Did those other boots fit right for you?" Yes, I replied (have since returned then due to this bad experience). 2) A female customer was seated to the left of me trying on 3-4 different types of slippers. 3) Another female customer seated to the right of me had three different ankle high leather spike boots that she was trying on. When it came to the last two pairs for me, and as the female employee was busy elsewhere, I approached Mr. Kunitz (elder - father) for assistance (he was rearranging things in the store and not helping anyone that I noticed) and mentioned the size I required, but for one, I wanted it in a black colour instead of the brown one on display. When he came out with that black boot version, and I mentioned that I thought the black version had a smooth patent finish like the brown one on display instead of a pebble texture that it does, he strongly replied in a rude tone, "No you're Wrong!" When he came back with the 4th boot, he then said, "You've been in this store two times now and it's too much!!" Huh? He then added, "What seems to be the problem, why are you having such a difficult time finding a boot? We are busy here and it's just too much". I asked do you mean that me asking to try on different pairs of shoes/boots is asking too much? "Yes" was the reply. In ending, he also said "it's been far too much, and I refuse to provide you business here!" Just imagine, he is the one who has a problem, not me the customer. That this is the response I received over a seemingly typical shoe purchase experience. WOW!! I am already sharing my story with family (+70 1st cousins) and friends.

Think twice about getting your shoe repairs done here. I brought my well-loved Echo shoes here to put on a new sole. After being shown the different options I went with the profile that best matches the original heights and pad profile. The soles provided to me as samples were not bulged and were flat and consistent as one would expect and would be formed to the shoe. Nothing out of the ordinary. Upon receiving the notification of completion I went in and paid. Big mistake as I should have put the shoes on and worn them before paying and leaving. When I got home I figured I'd wear them around the house and get a feel for it and instantly realized there was a big problem as the shoes had a significant wobble and absolutely no stability. I could feel considerable knee strain and fatigue almost instantly. I checked further and see a huge bulge in the soles (see pics at the front of the heal portion of the sole). It is hard to tell by the pictures, but these bulges are not consistent in terms of placement on the shoe sole profile and indicates this is an installation concern, not manufacturer defect in the sole itself. It's almost like it was unevenly cut off and then force-pressed on around a poor preparation job. I digress that I'm not a cobbler and not sure of the process, but I am sure about the quality of the result. They did not offer a refund as "services were rendered" according to the sales woman. They suggested we leave the sole on to bring it somewhere else where they could cut it off and do something better (since clearly they had no confidence they could fix this). They were polite enough and non-aggressive, so I can give them that of course which is why they get 1-star and not zero. Very unfortunate. The cost to re-sole with them was 60% of the cost of the shoe. The shoe has alot of life in the upper and seemed worth it, but now I'll be well beyond the cost of an entirely new pair in order to bring it elsewhere and have it re-done properly. I would not recommend except for the most basic of jobs and even then, if you have problems I would expect they won't stand behind it. Best to find another reputable place for repairs, since this one won't make any proper efforts for you on the customer service side. Best we stick to supporting retailers that stand behind their work in order to ensure we don't get taken advantage of as consumers.

Was really disappointed with my recent customer service at this location. This was my go to for shoes because of their great selection and past customer service. I was prepared to buy a couple pairs but left disappointed. After choosing a couple styles and willing to try an 8 or 9 ( cause their styles fit differently) the sales lady took about 10 min to return. She quickly told me their computer says there’s one style in a 9 but someone must be trying it on. She started looking all around the sales floor and returned to me 5 min later to tell me she can’t see them. Then she abruptly disappeared again ( I wasn’t sure if I should leave at that point or she was coming back?) when she returned she said she had asked the manager and she said the computer was wrong and they were out of stock of all my choices. No offer to cross check other stores or a suggestion of when they would be restocked. I’ve never had an issue with them being out of stock this early in the season. Another thing I noticed while left waiting, is a sales woman who was more vocal than others, spoke condescendingly to another associate which left her feeling embarrassed . Something about she couldn’t help her with her issue because she was busy too. Very unprofessional and I hope this was not a manager or certainly hope this is not normally how associates are addressed.

So I'm a little split on this review so I'll write a little comparison of my varying experiences. The first time I came the store was empty other than the 2 sales people. My friend and I looked at shoes for 15-20 minutes before we received any service and even then it was only provided because we asked. I questioned my shoe size in European sizes and instead of a proper fitting or size suggestion the woman just brought out a couple of Mary Janes varying slightly around the American size I thought I was. She didn't question fit but did mention the shoes were on sale. I felt pressured to buy the shoes even if I wasn't certain of my purchase. I wore the shoes twice. One indoor to sort of break them in, the second time I wore them out. The second time I wore them I quickly formed multiple blisters. Upon returning to the store I was greeted immediately and asked how I could be helped. Although I could not return my shoes they staff offered to stretch the leather for a more comfortable fit. I was offered help by multiple staff while browsing and the staff that did help me seemed incredibly knowledgeable. If my first visit had been like my second I'm quite certain I wouldn't have needed to another visit and the store would have gotten a 5 star review.

When your father was a cobbler by trade when he came to Canada from Germany, I was taught to wear good quality, usually, European made shoes. From dad, I also got big feet. Kunitz carries some of the nicest, most colourful, and mainly, carefully made shoes, boots, booties, sandals and kids shoes too. Usually most are made in Europe, somewhere. And my size 42 shoe is available there. They usually go by European size chart. But all equivalencies are listed too. Recently, they have had local artists creating the artwork and design of new shoe and boot lines. Get on their mailing list. Don't miss out..........jun 12/23. I did it again. And they enabled me. Only 2 this time. One orange and a hi top design, pink and purple. My honest opinion, with peripheral neuropathy, in my toes, which can really affect your walking, pain, shoes. The orange shoes were so comfortable walked 12,500+ steps over the course of the day. And the softness of the leather used. Well done. I want the blue ones!

Phenomenal experience. I walked in with an $80 pair of dress shoes, they were killing my feet over the years, but I couldn’t afford a new pair, so I opted for the cheap solution, repair and polish. As I was waiting for a quote, a bright and compelling young lady approached me, her name is Lamia, she asked me a variety of questions, very kind and polite. We ended up having a 20 minute chat, needless to say she absolutely put me together. I have been wearing my brand new Fluchos to work every single day since my visit (13 days), my feet have never felt more comfortable in a pair of dress shoes, and I feel lighter and quicker. Needless to say I no longer experience pains in my feet, thanks to Lamia showing me the benefits of investing in a healthy pair of lifestyle dress shoes. I’m so happy! If anyone needs a hand in the shoe industry, do yourself a favour, save some time, money and hardship, go visit Lamia at Kunitz :)

I went to Kunitz shoes for the first time on Jan 18, 2021. A young lady named Claire helped me and she was awesome! I had picked out several shoes that I liked. I am a diabetic and have neuropathy issues with my feet. After advising Claire about my foot issues, she then went through my shoe picks and advised why some would work for me and why others wouldn’t. She then found me other options that I really liked. I ended up buying 3 pairs. At checkout, Claire wrote out the directions for care (which needed to be sprayed and which did not.). As you might imagine, I took up quite a bit of Clair’s time while I tried on shoes and boots. The whole time Claire had a smile on her face and never made me feel as if I needed to hurry up. She was patient, kind and very knowledgeable. I will be back and I will be referring this store to family and friends. (Plus another bonus is that Kunitz has a great shoe selection!)

White sales people discriminate....not outwardly racist, but the last 3 times I've been in the store, none of them would help me. They were all standing behind the counter gossiping while I was standing at the counter. They didn't look at me or ask if I need help. They DID however, assist the other white customers that were there at the same time as myself. All the 3 times, an Asian and Black Canadian helped me. I guess the white sales people don't like non white sales people either. The non white sales people were running around helping customers while the white sales people ignored them, gossiped and only assisted white customers. I haven't been inside the South side store or bought anything online from Kunitz following my last in store shopping experience from them. The shoe repair person and customer service was great so I'm saddened that the sales experience has spoiled it for me.

I’ve been coming to Kunitz for shoes since I was a kid; they are always great at listening to what you need and finding perfect shoes, but today was by far the best. I need a very specific shoe after breaking my foot a while ago- it needs to have a non-flexible sole with a removable footbed for my orthotics. The associates were extremely patient with me and made some excellent suggestions of brands and shoes and tirelessly brought out different ones for me to try. We found a perfect shoe that fits all of my needs as well as a cute pair of slippers that I can put insoles into. I actually cried with happiness when I got home because I was convinced that I’d have to wear sneakers every day for the rest of my life. Now I have options! I will definitely be coming to Kunitz more often.

We are out of town and this store was recommended to us. First visit was good. Due to kids being chaotic we didn’t finish with a sale without a bit more research. Staff was very helpful. I’ve returned with our kids trying to buy an insert only. Arriving at the doors 5 min before 6 pm in July 24,2019 the doors were locked. Waited for some customers to get out and ask the staff if I could only buy the inserts (quick transaction). The staff denied my entry and the outgoing clients shook their head saying that this is not the proper way of doing business. I agree with them and didn’t insist more and left. This Store should rethink on how to deal with near closing hours. This made me not to ever spend any dime at this store.

Terrible place! My experience shopping at Kunitz shoes was horrible. As a POC when I walked in I could feel I was being racially profiled and the only staff members that smiled at me were the black and Asian people on the staff. I tried asking an older white staff member about a shoe I wanted and they never came back to me. Instead I noticed later that they were helping someone who looked more like them. I’m very dissatisfied and disappointed with the service I received especially as we’re in 2023 and you’ll think they’ll be educating their staff. I would highly suggest to any POC’s thinking of coming here to avoid at all cost. I would give them 0 starts if I could.

I have shopped at Kunitz Shoes for many years in Edmonton and spent a great deal of money there over the years. Sadly, the first time I tried to return faulty merchandise I was told it was "my fault and it was not covered by warranty and could not be repaired". This was the most expensive pair of slippers I had ever purchased and the first time I wore them the felt ripped. I was shocked that they would not stand behind their product or at least repair them. I am very disappointed in their customer service and sadly will be spending my hard earned shoe shopping money elsewhere in the future, anywhere but Kunitz Shoes.

  • Krystal Elder

From the moment I walked in to the moment I left, I felt like a valued customer and the service representative that helped me listen to what I was looking for. She had great recommendations and was quick to get what I wanted to try on, and knew exactly when to leave me to make my decisions. I went in for a pair of shoes and walked out with two because I just couldn't decide. EXTRA impressed that everyone ignored my service dog, which is rare and very welcome, so that I could focus on getting my shoes and not answering personal questions. This was a very nice gift! Thank you!

I’m so glad I decided to drive over to Kunitz today!! After going store to store at South Common looking for winter boots and having zero luck, I decided to try Kunitz. The young man that greeted me at the door and helped me through the whole thing was amazing. He knew EVERYTHING about all the boots, brought me other styles I hadn’t considered and I ended up finding the perfect pair. I could have hugged him. I never felt pressured or ignored. It was probably the the best shoe shopping experience I’ve ever had. That young man deserves an award.

  • Michelle Crosby

I used to shop here at least once a year.... I like boots and sandals, and always look to 'support local'. Today however, I was discriminated against for having a medical mask exemption. I had no problem making an in-store purchase last year, in the midst of this health emergency, and yet, six days before mandates are to be lifted you decide you don't want my money. That's ok, Soft Moc at the mall has no problem with my condition and they even cost less. To be clear, you lost a $200 sale today... and next year, and the year after...

  • Robert Pequin

Sooo very disappointed with the staff and owner of Kunitz shoes saddleback road location, we have been going there for decades! The staff is rude and the owner is more so, they don’t know what one person said to the other and they can’t even get the rules for online ordering properly, I will be telling everyone I know and all my vast customers NOT to go shopping here I hope that they have an attitude change fast and get some customer service skill management courses going for the staff and the rude owner

  • Joy Jannette-Walen

I visited this site in 2020 and saw their shoes, and fell in love with them, but due to the pandemic I was unable to buy them. And besides all the events I was invited to had to be canceled . But this year, everything is almost back to normal. So I bought these absolutely gorgeous shoes and they weigh almost nothing, but they fit so lovely. I was pleased, so pleased that I am going to get a few for my kids. The delivery was quick and efficient. Thanks everyone at Kunitz thumbs up

  • Alex Wong

I love this store. The employees are all so helpful and friendly, they offer warranty and repair services that no other store in Edmonton offers, the shoes are so comfy and cute and at a great price point. When we went in with out baby today, the person who helped us even asked how old our baby was while while gender neutral pronouns, which is a small thing that I loved and made me feel like it's a great, open place to be. I don't think I'll ever be able to buy shoes elsewhere.

  • Laura Gilligan

I had a fantastic experience today! Morgan was exceptionally friendly and helpful. I had bought a pair of shoes online, and Morgan showed me different insole options to help make the shoes fit just right! She came up with several variations before we were successful in finding the best combination possible for those shoes. I was told about Kunitz’s shoe repairs, and was impressed with the variety of shoes that were available. I’ll definitely be returning! Thank you!

  • Samantha Dreger

I've been going to Kunitz shoes for years now, mainly because they have great quality shoes and the staff are really knowledgable. I'm giving them 4 stars since the staff seem to be less knowledgeable this year. I did not have to wait long to be helped, but the staff did not know much about the shoes themselves. I'm glad that I was able to do some research on the shoes before going in in (which I haven't had to do in the past).

  • Gord

Kunitz is IMO, the best shoe store in the city hands-down. Best selection of really, really nice shoes, the staff clearly know what they're talking about and they will go out of their way to make sure that you're completely satisfied. It's an absolute pleasure to deal with this family-run (I think) business, and every shoes I've purchased there make me happy every time I put them on. Shop here, you won't regret it.

  • Caitlin Cupid

Such a great experience buying my work Birkenstocks. Last time I was here was 7 (!!!) years ago when I bought my first pair, and the service was phenomenal. I don't know the name of who helped me but she was friendly, knowledgeable, and so helpful! The shoes can be expensive, but it's because they only stock the best... Evidenced by the fact that my shoes lasted 7 years! Give them a try, you won't regret it!

  • Carolyn J

Love the Volks Walkers I bought at the new Kunitz West store. They’re so comfortable that it feels like you’re wearing slippers. I got excellent service from Dave who was extremely patient bringing me out various shoes so I could get just the right fit. I always got excellent service from the Kunitz family (Everett, Morgan and Mr. Kunitz) at the Saddleback and downtown store. It’s my favourite shoe store!

  • Gina Martin

100% recommend! The young lady that helped my son with his new sandals was wonderful! They had a great selection and prices were comparable to the big online market, but in the end, better because of the convenience of NOT having to send them back because they don't fit. We will be shopping here for my entire family in the future. Thank you for great customer service!

  • Karen Grøn

I just had the best service with Kunitz shoes. I ordered some shoes and they shipped them to Grand Prairie quite quickly. I emailed a couple questions that I had, I got a personal and automated response within minutes. It’s a busy time of year for retailers and their customer service is absolutely top-notch. I will definitely be a return customer!

  • Ohmbuoy Kabo

Xlent service, knowledgeable staff and a real sense of being taken care of. After trying 6 pairs of shoes, I finally decided on a pair that were awesome in appearance, fit and comfort. I really enjoyed myself there and also ran into a couple of people who were interesting, friendly and informative. I highly recommend this outlet. 5/5.

  • Sheila Tomlinson

Great selection of high quality shoes. Bet you can’t just buy one! I did mail order for the first time. Sadly the boots did not fit. Return process was an absolute delight. Never been so easy. I’m not afraid to try ordering on line again based on my experience. Thank you for the great customer service. Truly appreciated.

  • Jennifer N

Unfortunately couldn't find what I needed for my specialty needs. But, the staff was tremendous. So helpful. Not super knowledgeable, but kind, good spirited, and very willing to work. A clean well organized store with a great selection of high end shoes. Definitely recommend for you to shop there!

  • Erin Crux

Kunitz has an excellent selection of high quality shoes, sandals and boots. They carry some brands that are quite unique - not just the same stuff everyone else has. The sales clerks are knowledgeable and friendly. The store is organized and always clean and tidy. Definitely my favorite shoe store!

  • Mark Diachinsky

The staff here are wonderful, they do an excellent job of assisting with the proper fitting of my children's shoes. Seem to have a good selection, with more quality shoe brands, although that also means the cost is a bit higher than some other retail stores. But worth it for the attention you get

  • Rebecca Robins

We went in to beat the winter boot rush. Staff super helpful. They had the boot we picked out in our size. We bought Kuoma boots bcse my little wanted something light and she no longer fits Stonz. They had an amazing array of themed socks so we bought a bunch of these too for Christmas presents.

  • Bradley Biamonte

Remember when shopping for shoes was not a do it yourself thing? When a knowledgeable salesperson actually helped you choose and fit a pair of shoes? If you do, and if you miss that kind of gentle and conscientious service, Kunitz Shoes is the place for you. Selling both men’s and women’s shoes.

  • D. Christensen

Thanks Kunitz Shoes for the excellent service! I live in Calgary & had almost given up on my search for a pair of basic Birkenstock sandals (knew model & size); was pleasantly surprised to find a pair on your website. Ordering was easy & delivery very fast. Also, glad I was able to buy local :)

  • Lorraine Marie

Several friends have recommended this local shoe shop and was well worth stopping in. Found two pair of summer sandals on sale! Staff were extremely helpful and kind. For Covid: They do have a hand washing station upon entry and currently limit the number of shoppers, masks worn by all staff.

  • Sophie Steinhubl

Came here to get a pair of Blundstone shoes, and the lovely sales lady Nelinda (I think that was her name, was working at 3:45 on October 7th) was SO knowledgeable and helpful when I was picking out the sizing. Definitely will be coming back for the great costumer service.

  • Kathleen Vail

Clean store with amazing selection of shoes where the primary concern is clearly comfort. This is a store for people who walk extensively. Excellent service s d good return policy. I have been coming to them for 30 years and they don't disappoint.

  • Angie S

I got asked to leave. Remember clean socks if you go there folks. They are a VERY SMALL shop. I would recommend if there target audience is people with flat and not just the masses. Sell compression socks.
