The chef was outside smoking near the street bins when we arrived, we should have taken this as a sign and turned around and gone home...he went out past us to smoke twice more whilst we were there and gave us the 'eau de Winfield' each time he walked past our table...such class...This restaurant simply does not work, it is trying to be something in cannot pull off; desperately wants to be mid level French with prices to match, but ends up falling very short, issues in summary as follows, had to ask for a side plate for the bread, starters OK but not freshly prepared, ordered half duck, got 2 pieces, overcooked, 4 terrible chips on plate, been in microwave, other item on plate was inedible, my Wife had the pork, too tough to eat; the other 2 sides we ordered did not even arrive, waiters response was, oh sorry, do you still want it?? The wine was fine but all they did to that was pour it, my Wife's glass was not empty when they decided to just take it away when the second glass arrived...we went to this place when it opened and it was terrible then, still is, bill was $159, do yourself a favor and stay outside smoking with the Chef.

I am going to judge purely based on the meal and service and that would be a well deserved 5 star. I could not fault the food nor the service. It was quite busy when we came and we were lucky to have the last table available as we were walk-in patrons. The entree (Liver parfait) was 10/10. Amazing taste, I could lick the plate if no one was around. For mains, I ordered steak frites, which was 8/10. It was great but steak is steak. I will give it a plus point as the serving of French Fries was a bowl full that I ended up sharing with my husband. The other main, Kangaroo in Blueberry and Juniper Jus however, was 10/10. The meat was tender and juicy despite how kangaroo meat can be quite tough when not cooked perfectly. The sauce was to die for. This time I did run my french fries to sweep up the plate clean. The only minus (i did not factor in to the score) was how stuffy the place was. It was very hot, I am not sure whether the aircon was working and it was quite a hot night. But with food that good and amazing friendly service from the French monsieur who I assume was the owner, this is easily forgiven.

We totally enjoyed the evening , except for the standard of food preparation .. presentation was superb , but unfortunately everything was overcooked and not cooked properly relative to the type of meat or poultry ordered. The kangaroo , which is a delicate lean meat was poorly prepared , tough & chewy and over cooked. The garnish & sauce were excellent. The duck , was very similar as the kangaroo , totally overcooked , tough & chewy but the garnish & sauce were excellent. The same thing with the steak , totally overcooked , tough & chewy but the garnish & sauce were excellent. Even the ratatouille was average , although well presented , it was no better than you could make at home. The food quality was that of a pub/hotel meal not an upmarket restaurant. We were a party of 12 & would have spent nearly $1000- , and every time we go out to a restaurant we expect to enjoy something special and different , that we could not cook at home. Also , aside from the food , it was very noisy & almost impossible to enjoy conversation comfortably.

Second visit. First time food was perfectly cooked and we had a table away from the other tables. This time we were sandwiched between 2 other tables which I really didn't like. I would expect more room between tables seeing you are paying premium for your meal. I felt like we were in a fast good outlet to be honest. My husband had exactly the same as he had eaten the previous time and was really happy qith the food. I however decided to change it around and had the duck. Unfortunately, I felt the duck was over cooked. Not a succulent piece of duck I was imagening. I was disappointed. It's a lovely little place which connects me to France which I love. I do feel that you really need to look at your seating plan again. Don't just squash people in to get more money. It's about the experience and the food. It's up to you to fulfil this for your customers.

I have been going to this place for years and absolutely love it! Everything I've ever tried is exceptional. Recently I got their takeaway options. I got what the chef recommended which was 2 different types of stews, (one was beef burgandy, the other was some French name that I can't remember) I got their bread for dipping into the sauce and the waitress's fav desert. (Another weird french name) I followed the reheating instructions to a T. Well that was about a month ago now and I can't stop thinking about it. It's seriously mine and hubbys fav restaurant in all of melb. If I lived closer I'd visit there more frequently. I'd probably be broke. It's a real foodie experience. I loved talking with the chef as his passion really comes through, with what I could understand through his thick French accent. Yep it's a real deal french restaurant.

WOW. AMAZING food, fantastic service and atmosphere, great wine list with an honest and knowledgeable head of staff. If you are on a trip away from Melbourne this is a must visit and probably the only place I’d recommend or come back to Belgrave for. If you’re from the city, you won’t find the prices bad at all as others have complained of in the reviews - they are really reasonable actually for the produce, pub food pricing for top level food. WAY better than the best French I’ve tried in the CBD, and that was ridiculously pretentious, expensive and didn’t have as much flavour or food on the plate. This is good food done exceptionally well, they could honestly give the best restaurants with “stars” a run for their money. Highly recommend, go here.

Cosy, classy vibe. Helpful, knowledgeable French waiter (no snooty French folk here!) who knew his wine and recommended something that married my preferences and meal choice beautifully. Lovely food presented well. Come for a little celebration or just to catch up with friends and family. This was our second visit and we'll be back.

Lovely place! Everything you could ask for in terms of quintessential French cuisine. An unbelievable amount of delicious entrees made it really difficult to chose what to start with. We went with escargot and the pate (from the specials board). Mains are heavy on meat, so not a great vegetarian option, but they did have some good fish options for mains so pescatarians rejoice! Desserts menu also loaded with amazing choices. If you're local and looking for a really impressive meal, this place will not disappoint. Also a good chance that this place is worth driving to if you're closer to the city. We will definitely be going again.

We tried to celebrate a friend’s birthday. She has dietary requirements and the French waiter could not have been ruder - rolling his eyes and just not listening. We waited over an hour for mains which were all delicious but had to flag him down to order desserts which were all very poor-cold grainy crème brulee with no toffee and disappointing sorbet that seemed to have a cheap store-bought red sauce on top. No tea or coffee offered. This isn’t a cheap restaurant and level of service and attitude to customers should be top notch. All we encountered was an extremely arrogant man. 2 stars given as the mains were good.

  • John Gaspar

Valentine’s Day dinner. We ordered escargot as entrees, which were somewhat ordinary. As main course we both ordered eye fillet medium rare, one with mushroom, one with pepper sauce. The steaks were WELL DONE, there was no sauce, just liquid with sliced mushrooms and peppercorns. Impossible to put the salad on the plate as the “sauce” was flooding the plate. Cream Brûlée was next: the custard base was again watery, runny and the caramelised sugar was from non-existent to the razor thin. Would I visit again? NOT in this lifetime.

Best French restaurant I have been to in years, in or outside the City. Great oysters two ways. The inevitable snails. An wide variety of eclectic specials including one with a Morroccan. Incredible sounding Iles Flottantes as one of the many scrumptious desserts. But if you are going for the Fondunt Chocolate remember to order it straight after finishing your main or you will be waiting an extra 20 minutes for that member of your party to finish, as, as the menu advises it takes an extra 20 minutes to prepare (to it's level of perfection).

My wife says I should share this because this isn’t her personality We had our 8th wedding anniversary dinner here last night. The food was phenomenal and our waiter for the night was attentive and kind. Not only did he handle us with care, he also provided a moment of discreetness as we had a cuddle on the bench seat (humour of course). We will be back, for more cuddling and perhaps a meal ;)

Had dinner at Le Voltaire on Monday 6th. Service was great, particularly the attention by Chelsea, ably assisted by Charlotte. Excellent choice of food, including attention to dietary needs, Chelsea was very aware of my wife’s needs and took time to clarify any issues. Chelsea advised us of wines to match our food, her choices were excellent and the wines fully complimented the food, which was of very generous portions. I was pleased to know as we checked out that all staff that evening were female, just added value

Monday evening - Food was beyond excellent! Our waiter was friendly and a true professional. The entertainment was Jason Resch who was EXTRAORDINARY !!! Atmosphere great for a cosy winter's night. Decor - French eclectic - just beautiful with soft lighting and flickering "candles". Our group of 6 thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the evening. Thank you Le Voltaire !

A touch of culinary class in true French style in the heart of Belgrave. Three courses all expertly prepared and the best steak I've eaten this year. The scotch fillet was perfectly cooked and tender. The accompanying sauce was accurately matched and delicious. Also an excellent wine list. Elegant atmosphere with knowledgeable and friendly staff. Pricey but worth every dollar. Great find and a certainty for many visits.

I don't usually write reviews, but I'll definitely make an exception here! This restaurant is legitimately amazing in ALL aspects. The food is delicious, and paired with the great atmosphere, even more-so. The staff are wonderful, very friendly and observant special shoutout to one of the waitresses, Chelsea—you probably won't read this but you are legit the best). For those who like wine, from what my dad says, the selection is also really good! No comment from me tho since I'm a minor lol

  • Bibi Hagan

Service was friendly and approachable. Food quality was very good and there was a nice ambiance. BUT The plate designed as a share dish only had one of each thing so to share we had to cut stuff in half not possible with an oyster! We ordered the pommes Dauphine which tasted more like deep fried bread. Finally with my beef I would have preferred the option of crispy roast potatoes instead of fries. Slightly disappointed after going all that way hence only the 3 stars.

Great food & service BUT … - No vegetables with main meals, had to be ordered separately with extra charge, though they did taste great. - Main steak meal served with French fries, which are not really French, other potato choice would have been much more authentic. - Small tables for couples squished together on Valentine’s Day, we almost felt the breath of couples next to us … - Tip option being specifically mentioned when paying was rude. Again the food was very tasty.

What a superb restaurant! The food was amazing. And the service awesome. My adult children (foodies) absolutely loved the food, atmosphere and service. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting a French food experience. A little jewel in the crown tucked away in a beautiful part of Melbourne.

Celebrated our wedding anniversary on reopening night. As always the restaurant was as excellent as ever. Only suggestion is the ambience would be better if french music or more romantic or elevator style music was playing. Pop / Rock music from the 70's & 80's just doesn't suit fine dining at a French restaurant. Have been here multiple times and not sure if there is new owners?? That's the ONLY reason we didn't give it 5 stars.

  • Tim Young

Really cool little place. Food was delicious and there's a good range of cocktails and wines (French and local). There was an acoustic duo in when we went.... always a dicey venture in my mind but these guys were excellent. Not overpowering and the style suited the place perfectly.

My fiancee and I have come here once or twice a year for the last 5 years. I think the food is very reasonably priced for the quality and serving size. Fantastic service, the most amazing bread and the food is delicious. The staff are very friendly and helpful when trying to match wine to food and explaining french words. There is a reason we keep coming back.

  • Jasun Maxwell

Fantastic! Elegant! Magnifique! From the prompt kind witty service, to the "best garlic bread ever" (quote from my eldest) to the gourmet cheese to the exquisite crafted main meals and impressive specials menu going beyond the french classics, to the finely balanced desserts and then the live jazz that had us dancing at the table... I thoroughly recommend!

A favourite for our family. Great food and wine. Reasonably priced given the quality of the food. We have been here many times and find that when the senior Chef is not on the final product can be a little more variable - we therefore tend to stick to the busier Fridays and Saturdays to ensure he is there.

Absolutely a must for Belgrave dining! Amazing service. Very cosy and warm atmosphere & sometimes even live music. The lamb rack Wellington is out of this world! Freshly baked bread and butter is incredible & I’d keep coming back to just have that alone. Great selection of wines too!
