Obama Cookies are a delightful culinary memento dedicated to the visit of former U.S. President Barack Obama to the city in 2009. As of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, the cookies are famed for their novelty, quality, and connection to a moment in history. Each cookie is a sizeable shortbread, molded into the shape of a maple leaf, which serves as a fitting tribute to the nation's symbol. Obama's face is skillfully rendered in the icing, adding a dash of playfulness to the treat. In terms of flavor, the Obama Cookie strikes an excellent balance. The shortbread itself is rich and buttery, with just the right amount of crumble that you would expect from a high-quality shortbread cookie. It's neither overly sweet nor bland, allowing the natural flavors of the butter and flour to shine through. The icing, beyond just being decorative, adds an additional layer of sweetness to the cookie. It hardens to a nice, crisp layer, providing a delightful contrast to the soft and crumbly shortbread beneath. Each cookie is also individually wrapped, making them easy to take as a souvenir or gift.

I had the pleasure of visiting Le Moulin de Provence some time ago, and it's undoubtedly a prominent spot in the Byward Market. We stumbled upon this gem for breakfast during a leisurely walk through the market. One of the first things that caught our eye was their tempting selection of cookies, pastries, and sandwiches. We decided to sample a bit of everything, and I must say, it was all quite decent. Even with the place bustling with customers, the service remained attentive and friendly. One standout feature was their unique selection of 'Obama cookies' – a nod to the former president's visit to this bakery during his time in Canada. We couldn't resist trying these iconic treats. As for the coffee, it was alright, although not particularly memorable. All in all, Le Moulin de Provence is a must-visit spot in Ottawa, not only for its delicious offerings but also for the unique Obama cookie corner, which adds a touch of history to this place experience.

Stopped in here for a treat while we strolled around enjoying Winterlude. I had the chocolate almond croissant and my boyfriend had the almond croissant. Both were amazing! I preferred the chocolate almond over the regular almond, and so did my boyfriend. He found the pastry to be a bit too moist for his liking as he likes crunchy pastry, I however love softer pastries. The following day we stopped in again to pick up some almond/almond and chocolate croissants for family we were seeing later that day in Montreal before attending a wedding. Some of the croissants were put out for the guests, and I heard several comments stating they were actually better than some of the catered desserts! The service was fast, very friendly and bilingual. Prices were a bit high, but everything is made in house, looks amazing, and from what we sampled, tastes amazing! Can't wait to come back in the summer!

Located on the core of Byward Market, this is a stop for me every time I’m in Ottawa. There is a lot to choose from so be ready to make a decision on what to pick. I haven’t had their sandwiches or drinks but from what I saw they seem pretty tasty. I’ve never had an issue with service, they are welcoming and patient for those having to take a bit more time to choose from their many products. On my last trip out I got the lemon danish, meringue and double chocolate cookie. Both the Danish and Meringue were superb and I would highly recommend trying if you go. My reason for the 4 stars is for the double chocolate cookie. The taste was there but the freshness was lacking as the cookie was not soft but hard. I’m not sure if that’s the way they are going with their cookie but it is more of a crunch than a melt in your mouth. would recommend stoping here on your trip to the market!

We were looking for a little treat in Byward and walked in 10 minutes before closing. What was disappointing was that they were taking the items out of the showcase before closing time - really limiting the options. The workers seemed very uninterested about serving all the people lined up (and actively ignored us) Seemed that they did not care about the business at all, but rather closing the store. I had to ask if they were no longer serving since they just kept removing items to which they responded with a monotone “what do you want?”. Mind you there were another 7-8 people in like behind me. I can understand one worker having a bad day, but everyone? My recommendation is that if you don’t want the business then close the doors and tell the customers you are closed. 1 star because the dessert was good, but terrible service.

Loved walking around the market experiencing different pubs and foods. Came across le moulin de province. Id say the French make the best pastries and the wife and I were excited to eat a legit croissant even if canada. Larhe display of baked goods, breads, pastries, cookies etc. Took some time to look everything over as it wrapped around the building. Everyrhing was fresh and looked delicious. We intended on a croissant. Which they had several different ones. But we ended up buying additional pastries just because of how tasty they looked. Prices were pretty average, service was helpful and quick. Taste was more then what was expected and yes, best croissant ever. I think only getting one in France would top it. The market is a must visit, but while there you need to stop by this Bakery and sample some of the goods.

Location and opening hours, it's pretty good – I'd give 4/5. Service-wise, they're pretty decent and attentive: 3/5. The food though...I came here at lunch and bought a quarter beef stew pie, and also a large cookie. It might just be the items I happened to choose that were both bad. The pie had chunks of beef that were so dry it was borderlining on the Chinese shredded pork floss stuff. Only it wasn't quite crispy either. It was drier and chewier than beef jerky. Flavour was good. They also kinda just threw it into a box, but that's ok, doesn't affect the flavour anyway. The oatmeal raisin cookie...was also dry and hard. Hurt my teeth to chew. Flavour-wise, it didn't taste like what I'd expect oatmeal raisin cookies to taste. There's this strong bitter orange peel after taste. 2/5, at least based on the items I got.

I ordered a black forest cake for my son . I was so disappointed with the cake. I have never eaten such a horrible cake in my life. Clearly it was a brownie decorated with whipped cream. When my son cut the cake yesterday he said , why is it so hard ? It should be sponge cake but it was more a harder brownie. We tried in their byward market store, it tasted pretty good so we ordered as a Birthday cake for my son. If you see the photo they have on this site , my cake was nothing to do with that. Being a reputed boulagerie I am super disappointed with them, if they give a completly different thing. I can say that this was made by some intern, no not even intern but by someone who doesn’t know how a cake is made. Horrible ! I will never go to them .

This Obama cookie killed the French vibe for me but I would say it offers a variety of baked goodies, deli and drinks. Prices are on the higher side. Their pizza is expensive but tastes good. There are not a lot of spaces of inside the store but I would say it’s a good cafe for a grab and go adventure. Customer service was ok. They offer salad and sandwiches but I didn’t find them impressive.

I have not eaten here but passed through to get to the market beyond. the Place has plenty of seating though given the number of people that visit, it might be a challenge to find a place. It is easier to find a seat if you come in the morning, as loads of people will be visiting in the afternoon. It is not the quietest of places to have lunch but the crowds of people do add an endearing sense of hospitality. The sweets are probably the highlight of this place for me, though their price tag is not, but this is a touristic area and this sort of price tag is to be expected. The do offer pies, deli, cold cuts, sandwiches and sweets.

  • Sam Pattnaik

4 stars just for the variety of pastries they offer and their baguette was on point. Of course it isn’t humanely possible for me to try out all their offering but the scone and the muffins were great. The place is a little cramped but it’s in byward market so makes sense. They make a big deal about Obama cookies as president Obama stopped by here on one of his visits, we didn’t try it but they looked cool. I’m sure if you order one, they would know you are from America. Good bakery if you are looking for some pastries in Ottawa but I believe there are much better specialty French bakeries if you are really looking for quality.

2023: the meat pies they have here are unbelievable. Update 2020: So nice to see this place in the summer with its windows open. I just had the best chocolate cheesecakes. I was sad as they ran out of NY cheesecakes :( This place is the best spot to go if you are looking for cheesecakes, pastries, sandwiches, cookies, meals and a wide assortment of breads. The staff are very friendly and there are lots of seating.

Great selection of bread, pastries, sweet , sandwiches, and coffee. They also have a salad display fridge that I ordered Shrimp Salad which was unbelievable. The staff are amazing especially Iman who did every possible effort to answer my questions. The seating area was big and they have a very nice patio. The only thing that I didn’t like is there were bees all over some sections of the displayed pastries which I’ve seen customers leaving the store without ordering as they were considering it a hygiene issue. Other that that I highly recommend this shop for everyone.

Dismal service. All I asked was for a milk and sugar with my coffee, and instead of passing the sugar to me the server simply threw it across the counter. Also the croissant breakfast was soggy, and the fruit was just three slices of old, miserable and dried up oranges. And even though they dont accept tips, it seems that they charged me a few dollars extra for my order (unless the menu prices were just outdated). Who cares if Obama has apparently been there, you'll get better service at Tim Hortons! Absolutely terrible and substandard - avoid at all costs.

  • Qiot Riot

Amazing selection of fresh pastries in the heart of the Byward market. Great selection of sandwiches and cakes too. An essential visit for visitors. Parking of course is challenging in this area especially during prime tourist season in the summer time. 15-minutes free parking on York St just outside and across the street is convenient if you just want to run in and out, if you are lucky enough to catch a spot. Pastry prices start from around $3-$5, cakes from $20 up. Treat yourself and forget how many calories you'll need to work off later.

This place is a large bakery that has apart of the bread products, numerous pastries, cakes and pre-made food. The location has inside and outside space to eat. The place it is really busy but the bilingual friendly employees are efficient managing the long lines. I order an almond croissant, that I thought that was old, but when I progress towards the center I realized that it was just crispy. I also had a good raisin bread which was quite good. Since the great variety is available you can easily find something you like.

Absolutely delighted with my experience at Le Moulin de Provence in Ottawa! The continental breakfast surpassed all expectations – the eggs were flawlessly cooked, and the use of the highest quality ingredients truly stood out. The desserts, with their impeccable toppings, were a delightful finale. Eager to return and explore more of their enticing menu. A five-star gem!

Had high hopes for this place given the popularity and reviews but had a bad experience with most of the pastries I tried. Pina colada pastry and the 3 chocolate mousse was good. Didn't like the hot chocolate, felt a little watery with not enough chocolate. Mango mousse was the most horrible thing I have tasted in a while, very bad consistency, bought it at the end of the day so maybe it was stale. The espresso chocolate pastry was okay but not something I would want to eat a second time.

Still the best cafe' to drink and eat at when you are in the Parliament Hill, Rideau Centre, By Ward Market area of Ottawa. The selection of baked items is extensive. Fresh outside open air tables in Spring, Summer, Fall. Have eaten here over a couple of decades. Good place to sit with your Family, Kids when you just need to stop a moment. Especially if you are visiting from away. A real nice Cafe au Lait served here too in glass mugs. Good teas too. Well staffed. Enjoy.

Wow..amazing..dumbfounding..spectacular..extraordinary are a few words even which don't do the justice for this place..this place truly reminds me of my visit to Paris back in 2019..super friendly staff and delicious food..we had Pesto Chicken and Sun dried sandwich, Caramel Eclair, Coffee and Tea and really liked it..prices were economic too..spread from cookies to breads and sandwiches was astonishing..would definitely come back whenever I visit Ottawa again!

Sometimes touristy places are good and this is one of those times. They are strangely famous because Obama once ate a cookie there, had to be about a decade ago, but they are still talking about it. Anyway, the cookies are good. A standard shortbread style but my son loved it because it had a Mario design. I got the German Strudel which was good and had a bite of the Black Forest danish I got for my wife which was really good. No complaints, I’d go back.

  • L ZH

While I wouldn't call myself a regular, but i'm here often enough to notice the decline... I don't know if it's a post pandemic hangover, but if tourists are coming back to Ottawa this spring, M de P better step up its game. I purchased what is usually a flaky, flavourful chocoamande and got this squashed, flat sadness that had more sugar than chocolate or almond and frankly tastes like it was made 2 days ago. Please fix it.

  • Tania Kohl

Arrived for breakfast and had a wonderful omelette on a croissant, bacon, fruit, homemade potatoes a little tomato and lettuce and a cup of coffee for around 20$ Everything was so fresh and the man who served me was very nice. Nice soft music in the background and lots of windows for people watching :) Thanks for a great start to my day.

I like this place less with each visit. It's mostly a tourist attraction. We get it. Someone brought Obama there years ago. Get over it. On my last visit, I picked up an almond croissant that was the doughiest gooyest garbage I'd ever eaten. Not sure how it was a croissant? There was nothing flaky about it. I hear the one on Metcalfe and Queen is better ‍♀️

  • Ash Lamba

This place serves fresh baked sandwiches, croissants, quiche, pizza, etc. The place also has a huge variety of pastries, tarts, macaroons, cookies. The food is artisanal. I ordered a fruit tart, a spinach quiche and a latte. The tart and latte were really good but the quiche didn’t taste fresh. If you’re in Byward Market then you should definitely visit this place.

  • Marcel Lariviere

I have been a loyal customer for many years and have always sung their praises as to how their cakes and pastries were so delicious! But I find that the quality and consistency of their products has taken a big drop this year. They also make mistakes on orders but refuse to even respond to complaints. Unfortunately I can no longer recommend this bakery to anyone.

  • Patricia Cruz

This seems to be a notable spot at Byward Market. Their variety of sandwiches and pastries looked incredible and were decently priced! They even sell large meringue which I thought was very cute. I had the beef pie and it was pretty good. Good spot for tourists and locals definitely hit it up as well.

  • Kelly MacKenzie

A Byward Market favourite of mine whenever I'm in Ottawa. Great breads, Obama Cookies, pastries, good coffee and croissants, sandwiches, and prepared foods to eat in or take out. Delicious. The line ups can be long and slow but worth the wait. I go early. Staff are a bit harried but friendly enough.

[3.5/5] Super busy, which is always a good sign. Their almond chocolate croissants are really good. They served my latte in a “bowl” (or as another reviewer said, wide handle-less cup), so it was a little difficult to drink at first. Overall nice place, and would come again.

Stopped by in Ottawa’s ByWard Market. Cute bakery with a wide selection of meals, desserts, and breads! Staff were bilingual and friendly with our questions. Breakfast with eggs were OK, custard in the fruit danish was tasty! Gets pretty busy on a Saturday morning!

I am new to the city and celebrating a birthday so I was in the market for a good cheese cake. Le Moulin de Provence did not disappoint! I added a small tiramisu on the side and it was so light and wonderful.

Worth a try if your in the market, plenty to chose from. I probably made a mistake and had the pizza which wasn’t the best. There was plenty of other items which looked pretty good so I blame myself. Staff and layout of the cafe were good which is always a plus.

  • Taz C

Prominent spot in the Byward Market area. We walked through the market and ended up here for lunch. Tempting selection of cookies, breads, pastries, and sandwiches. Food was decent. Service was good but a bit slow. The selection on Obama cookies were unique.

  • Richard York

That is some good Danish. Danish is flakey and good. So many selections that you cannot decide what you want to order. The peanut butter cookie is also delicious. That is a good cookie. Not too sugary and just enough peanut. I want to buy more next time.

  • Jessica Cola

A perfect place for breakfast! They have countless pastries, delicious sandwiches and your traditional breakfast with eggs and bacon. Also a big variety of cakes and cookies, like the famous "Obama cookie". They have indoor and patio seating.

  • Nick Guiton

Probably the best place we ate during our visit to Ottawa, we found ourselves back there several times. An amazing selection of baked goods, pastries, salads, sandwiches etc. The espresso drinks are exceptionally good! Can't wait to go back!

  • Péter Sós

Very tired looking place with a massive selection of stuff. It feels like a food factory, even though it was not busy when I visited. I tried a brie and tomato sandwich and it was a very sad looking, soggy sandwich that tasted okay at best.

  • sloane rosen

Very large and spacious bakery. They have the famous Obama cookies (we got an owl and a unicorn) as well as other well priced treats (the fruit tart and scone). Would recommend to anyone to take a stop by and get something if they haven't.

  • Stacy Geraghty

it’s ok but quite expensive for what it is. pretty much overrated. I think the obama cookies idea is just silly.. cookies are also over cooked. 33$ for a meal made up of a sandwich, a tiny salad and a desert, no drink is way too expensive

  • Lou Mustillo

Recommended. Only had the Obama cookies, but they were very good. Very cool to see all the pictures when he came to Canada. Good location and helpful staff. Plenty of seating and other items to eat. Must do if you are in Ottawa.

This place have great bread, cakes. Brunch and lunch items etc. Tables kept spotlessly clean. BEST staff is being paid a living wage and NO tipping allowed. Because of this we only go to this establishment.

  • Nessrin 99

I just did not like that there were a lot of wasps and bees around the food which was really disgusting. I waited and stood long line to get in there and eventually ended up buying nothing when I saw that.

  • Ron Coristine

Hey moly! Cookies, scones, turnovers, eclairs, fancy pastries, squares, bread. Heaven for bread and pastry lovers. Unfortunately not a single gluten free option ($12 for a few macaroons is not reasonable).

  • Erica Kendrew

Stopped in to grab a sweet treat. The cookie was not overly sweet but had no apparent flavor. There was a good selection of other pastry and bread options which may be where the bakeries strong suit lies.

  • Robert Reyes Ong

Great bakery with good portion sizing! Got to try their blueberry danish, and would highly recommend. Didn't get to try them, but the Obama cookies were definitely overpriced at $4.50 a piece

  • Kah

Famous bakery. People on Google maps raved about their $5+tax almond croissant. All i got was a limp, soggy lump of unpuffed pastry. It's basically just a croissant size bun.

  • no thx

door closed at 6:49pm on a Sunday with staff inside. guess they don't want my business. went across the street to Cafe India and got freshly made Naan in 5 minutes.

  • Don_Akramsito

The food is full of bees and flies and the staff doesn’t care Food test: look good but test super average Prices don’t match with quality and value Don’t recommend

  • Marta M

Obama cookies were OK. The rest of the pastries pretty mind blowing. I could eat them all but I wasn’t in Ottawa for the required time to do that.

  • Em

The mousses are good, the egg tarts base are dry and pretty tough, the danishes are decent. Egg tart filling pretty good tho.

  • Diya Dinesh

I loved the bakery. It was so nice and so tasty. I recommend the Crème Brûlée. It was so tasty, and the texture was amazing.

  • Rod Orellana

Beautiful open air bakery in the market! Great easy atmosphere with incredible variety of desserts and artisan breads.

  • Morla Phan

I would give five stars for the taste, but the wait time is very disappointing
