Went here based on it being called out for "one of the 12 best spots for puffy tacos in SA". As our Uber driver dropped us off he told us that this was the worst mexican food in San Antonio. Since we had traveled for 20 minutes to get there, we soldiered onward. While it is probably not the worst place, it is definitely far down on the list. Atmosphere was not bad, service pretty prompt and attentive, but the food is just not good. We ordered queso and "house made tortilla chips". Worst queso I have ever experienced. Thin, bland, and tastless cheese liquid. Definitely not house made chips. Strike one. We also ordered guacamole and chips. Mashed avocado. That is it. No onion, cilantro, lemon, spices. At least they did not stir in any sour cream. Strike 2. Next came a shrimp cocktail. Not bad, not at all spicy and a bit sweeter than my previous experiences with Mexican shrimp cocktail. This one we did finish, so not bad. Then came the famous fluffy tacos. Tried beef, chicken, bean, and guacamole versions. All were heavy and very greasy. The chicken meat had good flavor. The beef was bland and heavy, bean and guacamole were passable. We left lots of taco on our plates. Beans and rice served with them were sub par. Strike 3. In short AVOID!

Los Barrios on Blanco Road  is one four Mexican Restaurants owned by this  family.  Three in San Anotonio and the fourth in Boerne.   First time to eat here. The parking lot and along the side  street were full when we arrived just before 12:00 o'clock.       As you step inside is the reception, waiting area, a gift shop, & a margarita/bar/ beverage station. Their cookbook is sold to the public.  Many memories, photos, posters of the Barrios  family are displayed.     We were guests of a friend who picked up the tab using a coupon which allowed one free meal with purchase of beverages.  Food prices are reasonable with or without a coupon. Usurered to a nice table  on left side of dining room.  The room provides a nice casual dining atmosphere.   The two who served us were friendly and efficient. Immediately brought our chips, salsa & drinks to our table.  The food plate delivered to us was smoking  hot. Initially,  it was too hot to handle.   My wife & I ordered Frajita Taco plates.  Our host  had a bowl of Menudo which she thought was excellent.  My beef Fajita was seasoned,  tender and juicy.   The salsa for the chips was mild.  Contrary to one review, Los Barrios makes its  own tortillas to serve customers (included photo of tortillas being made in restaurant).  Based on our experience, we will definitely return to Los Barrios,  as well as visit  La Hacienda de Los Barrios at their  Redlands location next week.

Los Barrios is very popular with the locals in San Antonio. Visitors may not notice the building as they maintain a low-key appearance. Once inside, it's clear this is no small venture. There are three large dining areas, plus a large outdoor patio dining section. The entry foyer is ornate with Talavera style tiling and some gift-shop items. The dining areas are clean & neat, with a very open feeling due to the high ceilings and wall of windows to the patio dining area. The menu is large, with most Mexican dish you would expect. Prices are moderate, leaning to the high side but not excessive. My local friends rave about the place, and this was our second attempt to go, the first visit nixed due to the long wait time. The food was good. Our waitress disappeared after taking our order and never visited again until we had to hunt her down for the check, even though the place wasn't half full at this time. This is a good place to take out-of-towners who may not enjoy one of the cozy smaller mom & pop Mexican restaurants which are all around town.

This one only gets three stars for several reasons. The puffy tacos are really good and it was the only thing that was good! Oh, and the ice tea. The portions are tiny, like less then a kids plate for rice and beans the salad on the plate was old and lettuce brown. You can see it in the pics kind of! Same lettuce in the tacos. You are charged .49 cents for cheese if you want it on the tacos. The enchilada sauce is more like a hot dog chili sauce and the enchiladas were the smallest I have ever seen in my life. The server I didn’t get her name but she is why they get the third star. They charge you for chips and salsa 1.99 for a tiny 16oz bowl of chips. I would definitely go here again but only for the puffy taco and tea!

I would definitely recommend Los Barrios !!! This restaurant has been there as long as I can remember. The people that opened it, continue to own and run it today. I had the cheese enchilada dinner, it was just as good as I remember. The only thing that was disappointing was no more chips & salsa. No big deal I would recommend anything and everything on the menu. Just to let you know they are closed on Sundays & Monday's

Forty years after attending Holmes High School, I shared a wonderful dinner and beautiful memories with my favorite teacher and a lifelong beloved friend Rosie Cantu. Time stood still and all was right with the world. Lots of love querida Maestra. The place of our reunion was San Antonio Sacred Ground, Los Barrios on Blanco Road. The recommended Tacos a La Diana were delicious, as were the rice and beans, although I will go back for the Pollo con Mole and the Shrimp plates. It is an impressive menu. My thankfulness to Luis Barrios, owner of Los Barrios Mexican Restaurant, for the warm welcome and the amazing food. The Guayaba & Queso Empanada was spectacular!

Absolutely LOVE Los Barrios! My family and myself have been coming to this family owned and oriented restaurant for years, and it never disappoints. Diana and her team, across the board, never disappoint on customer service and efficiency & always take ownership of issues or concerns regarding service or food. There is a very vast selection of menu items, as well as alcoholic beverages that can be ordered. Believe it or not, there is a very solid alcoholic beverage selection for a traditional Mexican restaurant. It is a VERY family oriented, traditional, Mexican restaurant. When you walk in, you’re definitely family. And let me say, if it’s your birthday, you’re in for a surprise. The team LOVES birthdays! I, highly, recommend the “tacos a la Diana” and a “top shelf” margarita with an extra shot. It’s worth it!

Been in San Antonio since 1968. 1st time eating at Los Barrios. Will be the last. Ordered an enchilada lunch special with a puffy taco and a mango margarita. The rice tasted like water no flavor at all the beans and enchiladas were good. The puffy taco was on the bland side and the margaritas was $11 for a small one and it tasted more like apricot than mango. I asked the waitress how much the margaritas were and she didn't know. Ordered one anyway big mistake. It was waaaay over priced. My friend who was with me agree that rice was horrible and she said her carne asada taco was below average. The waitress was nice and the busboy was very nice and friendly. Like I said 1st and last time going there.

The chili relleno was as good as I've ever had. The tortillas were excellent as well. After that it goes down hill fast. The waitresses forgot to take mine and my wife's orders. Then entre arrived prior to our 2 appetizers. The shrimp cocktail used precooked shrimp that tasted like it was ketchup based and had some avocado thrown in. It was not only horrible, I could tell this is it's normal taste. $20.00 in the trash would have been better. It's a shame to see a part of san antonio that's been around for so long was so disappointing. Everything else was mediocre at best. Rice and beans were forgettable. $90.00 meal for 2 without alcoholic beverages and I'm done. We couldn't even get chips and salsa an hour into being seated.

Los Barrios is not a fancy place, but the service we had was FANTASTIC and the food was good. We were torn between the No. 13 Enchiladas Mexicanas, the No. 7 Enchiladas Verdes, and the No. 14 Enchiladas Rancheras so our server brought us a tasting of each. I've never had a server or restaurant do such a thing, usually you just get a suggestion or no notes at all. Our server was so sweet and honest. Ultimately, after our tasting, my companion chose the server's suggestion of the No. 13 Enchiladas Mexicanas, which resemble mole but are actually a roasted red pepper sauce, very good. I had the No. 1 with a puffy taco, which was also very good. We did not find the prices exuberant. This is a great place if you are in the mood for a low key place with good food.

  • Jerry E.

Great place. I gotta say they stepped up. We had a group, one afternoon, that we sprung on them and, seemingly, we weren't the only ones. 3 or 4 rather large-ish unrelated groups popped in about the same time on a Saturday and the staff took it like a champ. Beverages were a little slow getting out, but again, we were the largest of 3 or 4 groups. It's understandable. We slammed them and they did their thing. Food came out hot and as ordered. no complaints there. Way to go folks.

I ate lunch here with the family it was definitely good compared to some other “Mexican” restaurants. The food was amazing! I rated 4 stars due to the service from the hostess. She sat us next to their storage room with the doors wide open so we had a nice view of some cleaning buckets and ladder and some other stuff that you don’t want to look at while you’re eating. The table she put together was dirty it still had food crumbs all over it. When the waiter came we asked for a new table. Anyways back to the food, the cabrito is a must try it’s super tender. My husband had the chicken red mole which he enjoyed. There isn’t many restaurants that can make a good red mole. I would definitely recommend this place.

  • Rob J

The main issue I have is the drink I ordered. It was a Dos a Rita. It was served in an iced tea glass, filled maybe 1/4 of the way with margarita and a beer. It was bad. Maybe 3 or 4 oz of margarita. That’s it. The drink was basically just a beer with a dash of margarita. I’ve never seen that drink prepared that badly before. We also got bad service from our waiter. I could overlook that. But the drink was very very very badly done. So badly done, still paid for it in full. But feel so badly cheated that I won’t go back. And I had been there before, and the food and drinks were good in previous visits. I have no idea who the bartender was, but it was bad.

Food is a little over priced for the quality you get so that is why I'm giving it 4 stars. The service was great but what I disagree with is that they charge 2.00 for a small bowl of chips and salsa and virtually every Mexican restaurant gives them to you free of charge so that is also another disappointment. I ordered the enchiladas Verdes and the green sauce was way to salty and I had to ask the waiter to take it back for another plate and I ordered cheese enchiladas instead.

Just left los barrios restaurant Had a great los barrios plate and I’m one to be picky with the taste of enchiladas. Los Barrios has the greatest enchiladas and tacos overall service. Had a great experience and enjoyed the food. Best of all my friend and I were out side under a tree having our cigarette and the main boss , I think the owner sent us some ice water to have while we smoked. By the way something I didn’t know was there’s a patio where we could have had our cigarette. Great experience loved the lunch we had at los barrios. Thank you for some great enchiladas and first time I saw my friend finish her plate.

Service is wonderful and food delicious Found it amusing reading the many reviews complaining about the chips not being free they're 1.99 extra....1.99! If 1.99 is that much of a burden then maybe do yourself a favor and have dinner at home. We ordered a large guacamole and a large chile con queso so our chips were included but I'd have no problem paying for them. The salsa they give you is not too spicy but really flavorful. Our waiter was super attentive and made sure we were good from start to finish. Highly recommend

We came here on the recommendation of a family member and we were NOT disappointed. Friendly waitstaff and our server was excellent. I always tend to judge Mexican restaurants by their flour tortillas and queso while my husband tends to judge on the salsa Verde (or something just as spicy if not more)and by the taste of the meat. The pictures show what we ordered. I had the No 1 plate and he had the Los Barrios deluxe. We were extremely happy with our decisions. The tortillas are soft and fluffy, the queso was excellent, the salsa was plenty spicy and the meat was exquisite. Topped off our night with delicious cheesecake. We are DEFINITELY coming back!!

  • M Allen

So good! Great salsa and chips! I am so picky about such things! The only real issue was that there wasn't enough baskets of chips or bowls of salsa. We had to reach ALOT! The food was attractive and tasty! I would love to go back! Stunning building!

This is my favorite place in San Antonio to go to have a great plate of Mexican food! I really like a family owned business, and that one of the owners will be dropping by your table to make sure everything is great. They really care about good service, too. The El Jefe margarita is the best in San Antonio! When they bring you chips, I recommend asking for Henry's Salsa - not that the red salsa is bad. I just love a bit more spice.

Service was great, food was not!!! The chef/cook definitely has a heavy hand with the salt shaker. The food was so salt that it was inedible. Word to the wise, if you’re going to charge for chips and salty (which is sacrilegious in my book) then they need to be good fresh crispy tortilla chips. Not the oil soaked, stale ones that were served. I could go on and on but this definitely rates in the top 5 of worse meals I have ever eaten. I guess that’s what I get for trusting a paid review site.

Was not happy with my enchilada ver. I didn't know that we had to ask for cheese on top bc every other restaurant adds free cheese, plus its a dollar more. Enchiladas were very salty and didn't have very much green sauce and tortillas were very soggy! My sisters menudo was hard to chew and swallow... they were the worst Green Enchilada's ever that I ever ordered, and I'm not a picky person.

Worst service I can remember in a very long time. I asked the wait staff 4 times for a chair. The food came out before the chair, and no silverware was brought out. No chips and salsa was brought out. I never got napkins so after eating with my fingers I wasn't able to wipe my greasy hands. I went to the restroom to wash my hands and there were no paper towels in the restroom. Curious if staff has a separate restroom...

Still a great as it always was. I dream about their nachos. Great enchiladas, rice and beans. Get a flavored margarita. Ask for butter, you have to have it for those tortillas. Ask for Maria, she was wonderful. She was Like ninja, sneaking around the table quietly, dropping butter, chips and a tea (great tea) that never went dry. We also shopped the entrance area. My friend bought a beautiful embroidered mask... I need more nachos... Ok I dont need them but I want them

Used Google Reviews to find a great Tex-Mex restaurant and landed us here! From previous reviews, we were amped up - but we're thinking tonight was an off-night. I had an enchilada meal (3 chicken) and the meat was pink. My husband had the brisket gorditas and was extremely pleased - the meat was tender and the taste was delicious. I should have asked my server about my enchiladas, but he looked a little stressed-out and frenzied. Settling on three stars because of the one bite I had of my husband's meal - which was - phenomenal.

  • Jorge Campacos

Had not visited for some time. found out there is now a fee for chips! The food was salty, the beans tasted spoiled. The quality of the food has dropped badly. And reading some of the other reviews, I agree. And no response from owners. Louie must passed on duties to sister. Will not return for another Long While!

It feels like home! The food is tastes like homemade. We are regulars and have celebrated many, many birthday's there. We have been dining at Los Barrios for over 20 years. The Special Platter & Tacos a la Diane are two of our favorites. The Chicken Fajitas for two are delicious as is the fresh made Caldo de Res! They have a sizable selection of Beer and Margaritas that pack a punch. The atmosphere is jumping with Mariachis performing when you least expect them. A great, friendly and efficient wait staff.

I had a combination plate...I think it was like the number 14. Anyway it came with 2 crunchy tacos on a side plate. Those 2 tacos were quite possibly the best tacos I have ever eaten. Perfect flavor, quantity of meat and lettuce and tomatoes , perfect light crunchy shell. Not greasy and the shell didn't break all apart after a few bites. My mom had the puffy tacos and I tried a couple bites but my tacos were heavenly. I will always remember that experience and our waitress was awesome too

Service was fine. Food was mediocre; lacked seasoning and flavor. Maybe hot sauce was ok but they don’t provide complimentary chips. They give you a bowl of hot sauce and walk off. Then we noticed the sign as our food arrived. Food all tasted the same and required a lot of salt. I’ve had worse tex mex but this was certainly no where near what it could be. We are driving through and thought we would try this place since it has good reviews. The wait was not long and the staff was nice. The Chile con queso was just queso with one piece of Chile in it. It was ok. The kids had the beef puffy tacos and tortilla soup and they were ok. My husband and I had the enchiladas Mexicanas plate and it was ok . The chips and salsa was ok. I had a pina colada and it was ok.

  • Tanya Lechner

We visited on margarita Wednesday and it didn’t disappoint! The skinny margarita was much better than the house, we also tried the layered bean dip for an appetizer and it was huge! The soup and salad came with chicken on top of the salad and that was a pleasant surprise. The only part we didn’t love was the tres leches because it was slightly dry. But the service, drinks, and food made up for it!!

Los Barrios is the place in San Antonio to get delicious, tender cabrito (baby goat). This is a birthday tradition for my spouse, and he loved it. I enjoyed the grilled chicken with guacamole salad. Service was friendly and prompt.

I am so happy to edit my review. After being contacted by restaurant we decided to give it a second try. The food was exquisite and the dessert even better. I normally wouldn't have given them a second try but the level of care demonstrated by management got me to go back!!!

The place is ok, needs maintenance. The food and drink are awful. I ordered a sampler, most of it tasted pre-made or frozen heated on microwave. Guacamole actually tasted funny, not fresh at all. We also ordered tacos, same with the beef meat, really bad taste. Margaritas were bad, in every aspect. Even the beer was not cold. I don't recommend it.

The food was terrible, service wasn't very good. There was a table full of drunk, obnoxious people near us and the restaurant kept serving them alcohol instead of limiting their intake. I don't ever plan to go back for the price they charged us. Might as well go to Taco Cabana or Taco Bell.

I was alone, and sometimes servers aren’t that nice or attentive to an older single woman. Opposite experience here! I wish I had gotten the gentleman’s name who waited on me so I could praise him by name. He was wonderful—efficient, courteous, thoughtful. My puffy taco was just great!

It does not make sense Hot Souce is free, and chips are not. Food is horrible, not even close to being Mexican food. I can not believe people even eat here; I stop by on my way to see a customer before heading out to my hometown Houston. We have better food than this; the taco truck is even better than this food. Stay away from here!

Old spot. Only the history of that restaurant is worth the visit. The food, bland. Nothing different than other spots. You do see a lot of white folks there. Don’t know why. I just felt out of place. Felt like a rally was about to brew

This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in San Antonio. The food is delicious and the staff is great. I recommend that the fajitas and the enchiladas. Good place for a cold cerveza. The restaurant also has a cookbook that you can buy and it had a lot of great recipes. Highly recommended!

My wife had the number 14 the chicken enchiladas. She loved them an so did I. I had the number 8 the chicken mole needles to say it was very very dry. The mole sauce tasted like sweet bbq sauce. But other than that the service was good the atmosphere was great.

I got the beef enchiladas. They were good, not the best I've ever had, but I would definitely go back and order them again. Ate the leftovers next day and they were dang good! The reason I would go back was because of the service! Excellent

I've always wanted to come here.. and I'm from San Antonio. So finally did it with family. The only issues really is how much Mexican food should cost. I love the place itself but breakfast should be affordable I understand lunch or dinner

  • Maria Reynosa

I will never eat here again. We ordered 2 bean and cheese and where charged 6.49 marked on our receipt as taquitos. We also order a couple of togo orders and we were charged a togo charge, and gratuity. I talk to the manager and she said

Ordered beef fajitas and 32oz drink to hotel thru Door Dash. Drink came with straw, but no plastic ware sent. Hard to eat rice and beans without those. Also very high up-charge for shredded cheese after the fact. Food mediocre and cold.

this place was so good! it was my partner's first ever meal in texas and she said the mole was amazing. i had the flautas and would definitely order them again. not to mention the good (and strong) margs.

Most amazing food and servers are amazing as well. Always order the same food and is an absolute must stop while I visit from out of town. Love the salsa and chips as well. Gabrito is out of the world.

Good food. Been awhile since I'd been there and found out on the bill they charge for chips. Unheard of. Won't order chips next time. Other Mexican restaurants we eat at DO NOT charge for chips.

  • Annette Martinez

Shrimp cocktail was a good size. Lots of avocado and shrimp not much juice. The shrimp tacos were delish. The carne guisada was the red gravy and over all flavor not so good.

The chamoyrita was delicious, and I liked the enchiladas a lot. The puffy tacos weren't really my thing but fun to try nonetheless. The service was really good.
