I walked in off the street an hour or so ago. I’d never been here before, but I’d spoken to a guy over the phone there a few weeks ago. He seemed cool and helpful. That’s not the “guy” that I spoke to today. As you enter the store front, there’s a stop sign due to Coronavirus precautions. So I stopped there and asked could I proceed and look at their bike selection. The one guy who was fixing a bike for (I’m assuming) the only other customer in the store at the time, told me ‘they’re only allowing one person in store at a time right now’. The customer was sitting behind me and over to my right; he and I were more than 6ft apart. From where I stood beyond the stop sign in store to the counter where the two associates are located had to be about 15ft. I could have reasonably been allowed to come closer to the bike that caught my eye without endangering anyone health wise. The second associate ,who’s bald, did ask what I was looking for and told me about the bike that caught my eye. No one introduced themselves, or asked my name, or anything that would make you feel valued as a potential customer... Ultimately, I just didn’t feel welcomed to be there; as if the guy fixing the bike just really wanted me to leave. At least when I walked out, I heard someone say, “have a nice day”. I think that was the bald guy because at least he told me about the one bike instead of just kicking me out like the curly headed guy fixing the bike tried to do. That’s worth at least one star, right? In response to your response, Even in times of crisis such as these, YOU STILL SHOULD MAKE EACH AND EVERYONE OF YOUR POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS FEEL WELCOMED AS A PATRON. You guys didn’t even try, John. It’ll be ok, though. I will just go somewhere else and deal with another bike shop where they’ll at least act like I matter as a potential customer. Maybe instead of assuming someone will get you sick, especially when you see them taking all the required steps NOT to do so, you should just treat them as you’d want to be treated. You know, just imagine you’re in a new city, in a totally new environment and you humble yourself to walk into a place and go to ask a total stranger for help.... Next time, maybe lead with that. Just so you know, getting you guys sick would have been the furthest thing from my intentions. I just could have really used your help. You’ve helped me, though. You’ve told me to go somewhere else. I will. Thanks, John.

My experience with John today was great! When I took my bike to him for a much needed brake adjustment I asked him to check the bike for anything else it needed. He put it on a stand, ran through the gears, checked my brake pads with a flashlight, checked chain tension and wear and thoroughly inspected the rest of the bike before giving me an estimate of $30 to adjust the brakes and lube the dry chain. "That's all it needs," he said. It being a rainy day I remembered to ask about fenders and he recommended a $50 set that I liked. Installation would be $30 and, since it would clearly take a bit of time, I asked him to do it. John texted less than 2 hours after I left to say my bike was ready. When he brought it out I was pleasantly surprised to see that he'd cleaned it and it looked like new (it's 4 years old)! But the really pleasant surprise was that my bike felt new again when I rode it. He'd topped up the tires and done I'm-not-sure-what-else but it was a different bike than I'd ridden to his shop. And the cherry on top? There were still several hours of daylight left to play with my new bike! John's price was better than I'd paid at other shops in the past, so I hadn't expected such first class service. John has a new loyal customer. I think your bike is in very good hands with him.

One of the employees was great, other guy (didn’t catch his name) was pretty rude. Went in to get my ebike flat repaired. Thought I was quoted 40$ but they said 60$ when it was done. Brought this up and one employee kindly agreed to the original price even after I offered to split the difference at 50$ in case it was my fault for mishearing him. The other employee, however, was complaining about how annoying the bike was to repair and then made a super unprofessional remark about how it’s never the people with “normal” bikes that refuse to pay. As if I had ever refused to pay?? On top of that their site says 25$ for a flat out the door, 8$ for tube 17$ for labor. I brought in my own tube so it was only labor, but it was the back wheel of an e-bike so I understood it being more expensive than normal. Just don’t understand being disrespectful to a first time customers.

I've stopped into this shop on a few random occasions, and I've always been pleased with the awesome service. My main bike shop is a bit out of the way, so I've been here for supplies, a flat, and even a car collision. The team here is knowledgeable, the store has everything you need (or they're happy to order it), and most importantly for me, everyone is friendly—even the other customers you'll encounter in the store. A couple of months ago, I had a service issue at this shop, and the focus put on resolving my issue honestly made my day. I appreciate that this is a small business, and even with what must be tight margins, they're more than willing to make the right decisions towards ensuring a great experience & rightfully loyal customers. I'm not at all exaggerating when I say that I was highly impressed by the service. Thank you!

This place helped me right away (I just had to wait patiently while he helped the guy ahead of me. Not long) after calling many other places (Kudos to Warm Planet bikes who recommended them because Warm Planet was temporarily closed). My chain broke on the way to work and I really depend on my bike to get to work. He not only fixed my chain but also made some adjustments and my bike is working way better now, like new. it was a nominal, very reasonable charge, well worth it. I wish I caught the guy's name. If you're reading this Mr. Bike Fixer, I was just there (8/23/21, about 12:30ish). Thank you!!!!

Mansplained everything. Edit: their reply is literally gas lighting me which is what I'm saying!! Since I am being asked to elaborate at risk of being inauthentic here are the dirty details: went there with my bike and was quoted a very very high price and was pressured to write down my information on a piece of paper he gave me very abruptly and rashly and was honestly so shocked and surprised by how rude and condescending they were and found a super super kind small Mexican family owned shop who did an amazing job for 1/3 the price (will post shop name later, reccomend them way more)

  • Francisco Morales-O'Connor

I can't believe someone rated this place one star...ESPECIALLY DURING THE PANDEMIC. People are all on edge and we need to understand that these are not normal circumstances. John attended me super well and left me with my 40+ year old bike feeling brand new. I live in the neighborhood and I'm so glad this place is here. Also, the prices are super reasonable. I went to a bike shop to get my bike fixed in Eugene, Oregon and they actually charged me more there for a similar service than the service that I got here.

  • Tony Moller

Fantastic service. I don't think you'll find anywhere else in the city with their combination of speed, knowledge, and price. I took my commuter/weekend warrior in for a tune-up, and noticed afterward that there was a bit of derailleur rubbing on the lowest gears. Took it back in and received immediate help, attention, and information on preventing it from John and Rez, with no extra charge. These guys stand behind their work, they're efficient and no-nonsense, and they don't charge you an arm and a leg.

  • Russell Lewis

Excellent service. You won't likely discover a company in the city that combines timeliness, expertise, and price like they do. After having my commuter/weekend warrior bike serviced, I discovered that the lowest gears had some derailleur rubbing. Took it back in and got free care, attention, and advice from John and Rez on how to stop it right away. These folks don't charge you an arm and a leg, they are effective and straightforward, and they stand behind their job.

Amazing bike shop run by an honest bike mechanic. Took my bike in for a check because my braking distance was increased. He took a look at my bike, told me that I still have a plenty of brake pad left, rather than trying to sell me one. Showed me a new brake pad and taught me which signs to look out for. Made a quick adjustment on my brakes and charged me nothing but a fist bump. He probably didn't know it them, but he got me as a customer for life. Highly recommend.

  • Emilie

When I wanted to have my bike fixed I didn't expect a condescending and strangely aggressive man to scream at me and try to pressure me into paying 3x what other shops quoted me. I hope that if you are a woman and a beginner that you avoid this place for risk of a traumatic experience like I had. I genuinely hope this man can learn to be kinder to strangers, we don't need extra negativity in this world. I will never return.

  • Mariano A. Aveledo

Mechanics are very knowledgeable and are not looking to overcharge you. Their prices are very reasonable, and tune-ups have a quick turnaround. I've swung by a few times for quick adjustments and/or minor repairs, and they've always made time to address the issue on the spot, and not even charge me! Just a friendly fist bump and you are on your way. These guys definitely know how to create loyal customers!

  • Kallie Fell

Fixed my flat in a pinch, but it was flat again the next day! I work nights and after getting off of night shift, my back tire was completely flat. I was thrilled to find a shop open at 7am. The guy working was efficient, but not extremely friendly. However, he got me out the door in no time! However, the next day my tire was completely flat again. Pretty disappointed, but hope it was a one-off.

  • David Richter

Excellent local bike shop. Friendly, bike-savvy staff, especially Matt. As a bonus, they'll keep an eye on your bike if you have to do business at the SFMTA. Consider having some cash on hand to tip the staff if you use this invaluable service. A $5 tip is well worth having your bike in one piece -- far from a guarantee when you lock it up on Van Ness and Market . . . .

  • Jessie Wilson

Honest, no-nonsense staff who do great work and charge a fair price. I had a chain and cassette replacement done here and I am very pleased with how much smoother my bike rides afterwards. The shop also carries a great selection of accessories and bikes to suit different riding styles. This is my go-to shop and I can't recommend them highly enough.

  • Elifaz Filho

Is there a way to rate 0 stars? What a terrible experience I had, the front desk attendant was extremely rude and did nothing to help while he kept complaining about how much my bike was damaged. I ended up quitting on his service and left. I hope no one goes to this store because places like that definitely don't deserve our business.

Market Street Cycles are honest, no nonsense in their approach and overall really want to help you in keeping your bike in good condition. They open early which is convenient and provide a solid customer service platform. I would recommend with confidence that if you need your bike repaired or maintained this place is on point.

  • Bhuechalo Kazi

Overcharge waylong time even no customer service. Wven not showing intrest to dix and if the had to they will in way expensive than others never return place and recommanded same to other by my own experience and when they hold bike the will take more wxtra day and will charge even more than more price for holding to bad

  • kieran mcnulty

Always happy to advise on everything bike related. When I need a tune up they make an appointment, prompt and are fairly priced. I saw today one of the guys helping out a wheelchair bound, and I presume of no fixed abode, man on the street outside who looked like he had a wheel issue. Customer for life here now guys : )

  • Matt Swain

Very impressed with the service from this shop. I needed my bike boxed up and shipped internationally. Lots of delays with the shipping company followed, and Market Street kept me in the loop the whole time as if the bike was their own. On top of all that they charged the lowest price I could find for boxing a bike.

  • brian reasoner

Both Matt and Brendan were a delight to work with. They helped my fiancé find the perfect bike on his birthday and tuned it up so he could ride it out same day. Highly recommend to spend your money here! They were patient and had great customer service. Thank you Market Street Cycles!

  • Olli Vanhoja

I crashed my Bianchi pretty badly and were able to get new parts and put it back together. My bike feels like new again, if not better. The tape job is perfect, a lot better than the original or the replacement I had made elsewhere. I seriously recommend their services, worth every penny!

  • Tim Wang
