JURY SUMMONS received and had to perform my civic duties or else face fines and penalties... So, the letter said to arrive at 9 am. Well the line to enter the courthouse was hanging out the door because of the security check in process. After that there was probably about 100 people waiting in a line to get checked in for jury duty. After that, we were confined to the jury room and not allowed to leave except for breaks and lunch. Rough Outline of this experience... @10 am to 10:15 we had a break and we're allowed to leave jury room. @ 12 pm they called the first group for jury duty. I was not called. @ 12:20 pm to 1:55 we did lunch. Nothing was provided. No food was provided. So, you had to figure it out for yourself. @ 2 pm they called the 2nd group for jury duty. I was not called. @ 2:15 pm to 2:30 pm we took a break. @ 2:45 pm they called the 3rd group for jury duty. I was not called. @ 3:30 pm they called the 4th and last group for jury duty. I was not called. @4:30 pm we were allowed to leave since we had not been selected for a jury. I did talk with some of the others who had been selected for jury duty. From their statements, it was a bunch of sitting around and mainly waiting for court proceedings to start. Then when things were about to start, they would take a break. So, given how late in the day groups were being pulled in for jury duty, unsure if they had to return the next day to finish their civil jury duty services. From my understanding, you are only compensated if chosen to serve on a jury. The compensation is like $12 a day. If more than 3 days, then it's like $20 a day. If more than 5 days, it's like $40 a day. I didn't actually read the materials on it since I wasn't selected, however, I'm not sure how that is even remotely fair compensation for performing a civil service. Overall, whoever, established this jury duty process needs to be summoned for Jury Duty because the entire process is beyond broken. Honestly, it felt like I was being punished in order to provide judgment on someone else's alleged criminal activities. I guarantee if the people who established this process had to undergo it, then some things would definitely change. For the entire day, we were allowed 1 free small coffee from Courthouse Cafe. The Courthouse Cafe employees were super friendly and really refreshing after a whole day of waiting. Being honest, I'm not sure how well someone is supposed to function, evaluate a court case and/or even render a judgment after this process. Everyone was drained and annoyed with the process before even getting into the courtroom. Justice may be allegedly blind, but if summoned, you better be prepared and have high levels of patience. Pack snacks/meals, books, games, laptop, phone, batteries and chargers because it going to be a lot of waiting!!

Prep Time: 15 minutes Total Time: 1 hour, 15 minutes Yield: 12-15 medium size or 20-25 small empanada discs Ingredients 3 cups all-purpose flour ¼ to 1/2 teaspoon salt 6 oz unsalted butter (1 ½ sticks) 1 egg 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup of water or milk, adjust as needed to obtain a soft and smooth dough Instructions Making homemade empanada dough: Mix the flour and salt in a food processor. Add the butter and pulse Add the egg and the water or milk (in small increments) and continue pulsing until a clumpy dough forms. To make the empanada dough by hand, follow the same instruction but use your hands to mix the ingredients together. Split the dough into 2 large ball, flatten slightly into the shape of disks. The dough can be used immediately or refrigerated until ready to use (1-2 days max). Roll out the dough into a thin sheet and cut out round disc shapes for empanadas (use round molds or a small plate). You can also make small individual balls with the dough and roll out each individual ball to a round shape (doesn't need to be perfectly round) - if you have a tortilla press you can use it to flatten the dough balls. Use immediately, or store in the refrigerator/freezer to use later. Assembling and baking the empanadas: To assemble the empanadas or turnovers, place a spoonful of the filling on the middle of each empanada disc. The amount of filling will vary based on the size of the empanada, but in general, it’s easier to seal an empanada that isn’t overstuffed. Also, the more you make empanadas, the easier it becomes to stuff them to the max and still seal them properly. To seal the empanadas, fold the disc and seal the edges by pressing the dough with your fingers. If you’re having a hard time sealing the edges, you can use brush the inside edges with egg white, it will act as a glue for the empanadas. You can also use a fork to help seal the edges, just press the top of the fork against the edges. To the repulgue or churito, the curl type seal, use your fingers to twist the curl the edges. There are also empanada molds that you can buy and will help seal the empanadas. For best results, I recommend refrigerating for at least 30 minutes the empanadas before baking – this also helps them seal better and prevents the filling from leaking out. If you want your empanadas to have a nice golden finish, then you can brush them with egg wash (a whole egg whisked or egg yolk plus a few drops of water whisked). Bake the empanadas in a pre-heated oven. I usually bake them at 375F-400F, the temperature will vary based on the oven and the size of the empanadas. I bake the smaller sized empanadas at 375F. The baking time also varies (again based on the oven and size), but it’s in the range of 18-25 minutes – the empanadas will be ready once they are golden.

I just completed my first day of jury duty today. If I have to offer one suggestion, it would be to have some signs as people enter the lobby to let jurors know which floor to go to. The building is beautiful and it’s easy enough to see how to get through security first thing. But once you’re in there really isn’t any direction on where to go as a juror unless you just stop someone and ask. OK, maybe two suggestions: have some decent coffee available! Aside from that, there were probably at least another 200 people that had also been summoned for today. You get the feeling that this is a pretty regular amount of people, and they have the division of all parties into their assorted court rooms down to a science. I think the main reason I wanted to leave such a positive review isn’t just because the facilities are very nice, and for a day of public service the creature comfort’s are not bad (they even played a Kevin Hart movie while we waited!) but because the staff working in all areas of the process are very sympathetic and friendly. The front desk check in staff walk everyone through the parking validation process and where to sit when checked in with a friendly and even demeanor. Orientation is thorough and backed up with a video that helps participants understand a bit more about the process. My section wasn’t called until the end of the day, but the deputy and the judge we’re both very sympathetic to the fact that everyone had given up a valuable workday to come and perform their civic duty. The prosecutor and defense attorney on the trial were also very cordial and I was extremely impressed with how everyone still managed to keep an upbeat attitude even at the end of the day. I’m not sure if we all were just lucky, but each person in the process that was assisting us - from security checking bags upon entry to the judge presiding over the case- had a really good sense of humor. I actually had fun at jury duty, would highly recommend it! ;)

The 2 customer service members that sit at the first 2 windows for Judgements on the second floor customer service is awful. The first time I spoke with a women I asked for my File No. for my small claims case. Before I could fully get my sentence out she directed me to the computers to search for my own file No. I then came back to the window and spoke with a guy because I had difficulties with the computer. He was no help either. He stated he couldnt provide me the information I needed without my File. No. That day I walked off really frustrated because everyone was directing me to speak with Judgements but they were no help! My second time I came to the courthouse I spoke with the same women from last time kindly asking for my file No. and she then directed me to the self service center down the hall. The service center directed me back to Judgements. This time I went to judgements I made sure I did not go to the 1st 2 windows because I just knew they would send me somewhere else. I spoke with Jill. She was very very helpful. She was more focused on actually listening to what I needed and helping instead of giving me the run around. She gave me the neccessary documents, helped me with my writ of execution form and the process is now done thanks to Jill. I can't thank her enough. This process that took running around 3 times was handled under 5 minutes with Jill. Great customer service

I guarantee that I will be making it my personal duty to launch a formal complaint against this whole entire district. I don’t care how much time it takes me to get done. Someone HAS to be informed of the utterly complete mistreatment here. It’s disgusting! I’ve been at the magistrate for 12hrs to pay a cash bond for someone. I have been given the run around and so many lies several times. Instead of the staff and judges taking accountability for NOT understanding their system or miscommunication w/ the other dept. they kept making it seem like the delay was my issue. When it was 100% their fault. Everyone I came in contact with these now 13hrs have all treated me less than a human being. Scum is what I left like to be exact. They all look down on you not to help or guide you. They allow officers to come in and skip to the front of the line no matter how long other civilians have been waiting. This is unacceptable and no one should be allowed to treat people like this. I pray for the judges working here because they’re truly nasty rude souls. All of them! There was only ONE sheriff at the front who listened to me and actually try to do his best to help me out. For that I thank you. I wish there were many more of you throughout that awful building. Then maybe it wouldn’t be so terrible

Bad attitudes and liars all around each department. They seem to have this notion that everyone who calls to try to get help are criminals. I discovered that I paid more towards my court fees then what I was supposed to. And the reason why was because their system is so outdated that when I paid in full online it added on the 3 other payments that I made in person. I was told by 3 departments (book keeping, probation, and fines/collections) that they would take care of the issue. The young man at book keeping had a snappy attitude with me and so did the young woman at probation, who hung up on me before her saying ‘I’m taking my lunch break’ This issue was discovered in January, it is now March and still no issue has been resolved and I feel like I will never get my money back. Update: It is now October 2023 this issue was 7 months ago. I was told that I would receive a check in the mail and to have my financial institute send the money back into my account. The bank cannot issue a refund because it is not their job but the courthouse’s job to do that. I essentially just gave up calling and still haven’t received any money back.

Magistrate Leigh Tallman Peters is a disgrace. She laughed and smirked at us repeatedly in our obvious distress. We were so stunned by her complete unwillingness to help us after multiple pleas. She has no business being a representative of the court. If you see she is the magistrate, don’t bother trying. She gave us a phone number that was a rabbit hole, with the person even asking me WHY would the magistrate have used this number as the next step. Magistrate Peters is a prime example why bureaucracy can be a joke that keeps stonewalling people trying to obtain needed help. UPDATED: We returned to the courthouse to a different magistrate. We provided the exact same information. This magistrate was kind, thoughtful, compassionate and immediately sprung into action. We obtained the help we needed. Please give this post a Like if you agree the fates of your loved ones should be in the hands of someone who takes life or death situations seriously. Shame on you, Magistrate Leigh Tallman Peters, for being so cruel and making our situation much more difficult than it needed to be.

Very rude, when you finally get ahold of someone on the phone that is. I called multiple times within a week because my lawyer could not give me any information as they weren’t giving him any, and each time I called I’d wait at least 30 minutes, I hung up and tried again another day and finally after 40 minutes someone answered, transferred me, and the lady I was transferred to was mad at the other for transferring me to her and took it out on me with attitude and asked why I had been transferred to her. I had an uncontested divorce and have waited nearly 20 days for my motion to be sent down and filed. It was supposed go be motioned the week of the 12th. I was sworn to that it would be quick and easy as I am ready to move on with my life but am forcefully being held back because of these peoples ignorance and not caring of others. An uncontested divorce that’s incredibly past due, it’s uncontested there shouldn’t be any issues as I had a lawyer handle the whole thing. Absolutely ridiculous.

Rude , rude, rude. Unprofessional. I went to get forms to respond to a summons and witnessed the ladies eating behind the desk, laughing and talking about personal issues. They were asking inappropriate questions to the men, who were there to get paperwork, about their specific circumstances that were none of their business ie. Why do u need a DNA test if u know thats your daughter? I mean....what!! Told one man he had to " do a dance" before they would give him the forms he needed. When he refused they was laughed at him and asked him again to dance They talked to me like I was stupid when I asked asked which binder I could look at for lawyers, expecting me scan the whole wall when they could have kindly pointed me in the right direction. I may file a formal complain. There's more I witnessed and I was there less than 30 min. How insensitive are they to treat people obviously going thru emotional issues with such disregard and lack of respect.

It's court... My experiences have been very disorganized in terms of staff knowing what's completely going on. However I am VERY grateful they're gettimg more progressive and sensible aboit starting addicts while incarcerated on an MAT program and follow up aftercare so slow the senseless overdose deaths and keep intimates from getting violently from withdrawals. Opiates can be especially nasty and traumatizing to come off of cold turkey which does NOT stop relapses when the individuals get out... Obviously the excellent nurse team also keeps a watchful eye on inmates coming in detoxing hard from benzodiazipines and alcohol... The two physical withdrawals that can and do kill if gone untreated and untampered. Proud to see even those small important medical care changes taking place here. Many counties in NC sadly still pride themselves in letting addicts suffer in the most inhumane, unsanitary ways. Meck. PD

Full of racism in this court. No fair trial, workers are Full on racist and charged me without able to get to court date. Workers Full on cannot be professional rather hold a grudge on a young man with dreams. The judge threatened me and told me not to call back. I only fear God and will not a man with power tell me I cannot fight for my name and criminal record. They are trying to silent me which I get I was upset but to say I was a reckless driver that is not me and to lie on my name is unfair. I am more upset the fact. I couldn't get a fair trial and for the judge to threatened me is a criminal act on his end. I couldn't go to court due to covid but if that was his family he would of probably been home instead of court too. I want this judge charged for discrimination and tampering with my case if that's what you call it. Judge Spencer is a dirty judge and I will get this story heard.

  • Robert Summers

I've been to the court several times in the past 5 years. I have always found the staff surprising friendly and helpful. I usually expect the typical government employee stereotype of people who could care less and just want to get their benefits and talking to customers is a huge inconvenience. Instead I find over and over again employees who take the time to explain the complex issues people must navigate to get through the court system, from what forms to fill out to directions on where to go and who to talk to. I have overheard many conversations with other people too and find the staff to be professional and courteous when able, and stern when needed. The bottom line is that being at the court house means you're probably having a bad day, but the people working there seem to really try to help you through that process.

On 6/29/20 @ aprox 9:50 am, I went to the self service desk to ask a question. I was RUDELY told by an African American woman with coils in her hair..age range of (50's - 60's).. There were no forms avaiable for my issue and they do not handle that. There was a desk full of forms, in which was a packet for another issue that I would eventually need. I asked if I could have one of those and was RUDELY told NO again. She would not give me the forms because I wasn't within the guidelines ? Her demeanor, attitude and the way she spoke was the worst I've seen in a very long time. What troubled me the most is what are my tax dollars going towards. I could not receive what should have been a FREE packet ? On top of horrible customer service. They must do better !

  • Kasi Everhart

These folks are pathetic. I went to the Self Serve area for a certain form and Homegirl working there gave me an expired form. Firstly she was rude of course, and acted like she didn’t want to help me. She said I needed a lawyer to understand the form and didn’t want to give it to me. So then she gave me an expired form that was last revised in 2013. I didn’t know at the time that it was expired until I got home and started piecing things together. So yeah, just trash people like everyone else has said. Gotta live a really pathetic and miserable life to work at the Self Serve area of the courthouse and give unsuspecting people looking for help the wrong form on purpose. That’s unethical.

  • CaNCaN

Only giving two stars because the lady in the Self Help Center(glasses and blonde braids) was Amazingly helpful! I was suing my landlord and she was so compassionate about making sure I filed my paperwork out properly! She’s the best One in the building! Now there is another lady on the Third floor in Judgments and first and foremost Rhonda, glue your lace front down before coming to work and stop giving out advice! She was so rude and negative and she had no compassion, I would be rude too if I didn’t like Myself! Why take Public Service jobs if u going to be BITTER, every situation is different and should be treated as such! Don’t speak negatively on people’s lives either!

  • Hanna Parrott

So annoying. I received a speeding ticket in NC along with all 4 other cars around me (we were merging onto independence) and when I went in person they reduced it to improper equipment. At the time time I was working on moving and the ticket got misplaced. Because of COVID, I couldn’t call and get through to anyone. I even showed up and the woman at the door told me just to forget about it for a little bit. Well I moved and I’m getting letters that my NC license is being indefinitely taken away. STILL, can’t get through to anyone. I’ve tried calling 4 times UPDATE: 4 months later they suspended my Florida license. Still won’t return back to me in any regard.

  • Alycia Christina

I don’t have the energy to go into detail so I’m just going to say this. Judge Ronald Chapman is a terrible judge who clearly is in favor of the batterers and men who beat women. You can tell that he used to be a defense attorney and it shows. It makes me wonder if he is a current or previous abuser himself. I have looked on how to make an official complaint on a judge but could not find a way. I was warned about this judge by a legal aid attorney before going in about my case and was told he is bias. He is. He should not be a domestic violence judge and I would LOVE to make a formal complaint about what happened in my situation.

  • john valach

I was told by the secretary I could fax in expired registration. I did it 15 days ago, only 2 days after receiving a ticket. I have call and left several messages and no one has called me back to confirm they received the fax. I tried to do the online dismissal but it says it's less than 7 days til my court date even though it was still two weeks away?!? Now no one is answering the phone at all. It would be nice to go and personally take care of this today, since I'm off work, but looks like I will have to miss work. What really sucks is that this ticket is for a vehicle that's not even in my name.

  • Samuel McNeil

It's impossible to overstate the gross incompetence of the court personnel and the corrupt idiots in the DA office. Got a stop sign ticket, represented myself pleading not guilty. Out of 20+ people I asked for some factual information on court procedures, 2 were helpful and the rest were entitled government buffoons. Young little clueless Assistant DAs tried to railroad me, refused to give me evidence until 10 minutes before the first hearing, I.e. they broke the rules of evidence. Judge was a total clown. After appealing I won. Touche corrupt CharMeck court system.

  • Christopher Allen

There is a lady working at the judgments window on the 3rd floor that could possibly be the most miserable/worthless individual on the planet. Sucking in valuable oxygen that other productive people could use may be the only function she effectively serves. If she has a husband, he needs to be given an award before he hurls himself in front of a speeding dump truck. I'm sure her colleagues at work are super stoked to see her everyday.......I'm not sure who she is......however, I'm certain I know what she is.........a certified oxygen thief

  • Matthew Jacob Dougherty

I didn't catch anyones names because I was in and out so quickly. I didn't even have my citation today to talk to the ADA, and even with having to go print out a new one before getting back in line~ I was still in and out in under 35 minutes! The clerk, the cashier and especially the assistant district attorney were all very helpful and friendly which I definitely didn't expect. Bravo for making the stress of dealing with a ticket in a city that I've barely even visited as painless as humanly possible. You guys rule.

  • Derek Fletcher

I frequently appear in Mecklenburg; the courthouse is laid out in a manner that makes logical sense: • 1st floor (courtrooms 1130 & 1150) are Administrative courtrooms and first appearances; • 2nd floor is Criminal Clerk; • 3rd floor is Civil Clerk & Estates; • 4th Floor is Criminal District; • 5th Floor is Criminal Superior and Jury room; • 6th Floor is Civil District and Civil Superior Courts; • 7th Floor is empty and reserved for expansion purposes; •8th floor is Family Court; and • 9th Floor is Judges Chambers.

  • 704Smellz

The DA used to be open until 4:30 pm, now they're stopping at 3 pm. When I just received the schedule about 3 months ago. The light skin lady with the long locs where you go to get your citation number was acting like I made her come into work. If there's not a system that shows which orders are open, then she should have said that instead of yelling out the number of tickets I've gotten in my entire 36 years of life. She is located on the end near where the DA used to be. Maybe she wants a non public position.

  • Lindsey Werfelman

Magistrate Judge Watson, not going to be helpful to any domestic violence victims. She will give you the cold shoulder. She will make you feel small and uneducated. I would suggest the county gets a translator for people with learning disabilities so future victims don’t get pushed to the side. I pray to God for the sake of the safety of this county that she retires too. She is way too tired, you can tell by looking at her. She doesn’t care about her job or the well being of the public. That is my opinion.

  • Rey Mysterio

Mecklenburg county judges are really biased against landlords. I have personally been to court, and the smugness our lawyer and I received was uncalled for. I know for a fact many many other people have felt this way. Also god forbid you have to call into the different departments inside the courthouse and try to get a question answered. Majority of them are rude and give the worst customer service imaginable. Someone should look into this...this is no way for state employees to treat it's constituents.

  • J Bar

The most incompetent people who can work for any government agency work here. I can't believe we pay for these people's salaries. I really wish they could learn how to communicate effectively with each other and streamline their system. But it's obviously a trap, in which to catch working Class People , mostly lower class, so that the courts can exploit the most time and money from them. Shame on Mecklenburg County court systems get y'all's at together!

  • killersushi99

One look at the 700+ people on the docket lined up to go into 1 courtroom it dosent take a mental giant to figure out that there is a revenue generation plan going on in this county. One ticket can be $185 in court costs. So lets do the math $185 x 700 people on a docket = $129,500 a day in fines. Pretty good business you could say. (From DA's website: "Over 175,000 traffic cases are prosecuted in Mecklenburg County every year.")Do the math on that.

  • Josep Cortez

Trying to file a civil lawsuit and was told I need to look up a person to determine if they are military or prior. Asked the lady (older African American women) for help with website and where to look and search but she just had rude demeanor and said she can’t help me . How professional should hire someone that can actually help the public that is paying their bills we make your checks should show a little respect or at least try to help

  • Amp House

The Mecklenburg County judicial system is not fair and non biased. The judges will decide against you even if the plantiff fails to provide evidence (recorded conversations, emails, pictures etc) against the defendant. A decision was made on SOLELY on accusations, and allegations. However, if I was the Plantiff I am certain it would not have ended that way. I am not upset, more so disheartened. I cannot trust the system.

  • Semeka Hairston

My business took me to the small claims window in room 3725. The two individuals that I encountered (female and gentleman) were extremely helpful and went the extra mile for me. There was a gentleman in line with me and he shared my sentiments. I'm glad to say there are still some kind people left in the world that don't mind pointing you in the right direction. Kudos and forever in debt. Thanks. :)

  • Katherine Campbell

Rude!! I get that you work a government paid job and customer service is not in the job description. There is no reason to yell and act absurdly rude because someone asks a question on how to do something that is your job to help them with. My taxes pay for you to have this job. So drink a cup of coffee, loosen you migraine bun, and stop being miserable human beings! Civil court employees.

  • D. R. Hardin

The lowly officials who run the security checkpoint at the entrance could stand a lesson or two in manners. It is no wonder why these individuals have been assigned this brainless task. Also your website could probably post the correct hours of operation rather than these metal detector monitors belittling every person who comes through the door. Scumbags.

  • Medea Euripedes

Shamefully deplorable service to the population they serve; the staff is never available to answer the phone, it says call back later, and DISCONNECTS. I'd give it -0- stars if possible, since they are unavailable for service over the phone. Thankfully I practice in Wake, where the courthouse IS accessible by phone; thank you, Blair Williams.

  • Lloyd Kemry

To get a hold of anyone on the current phone roster is impossible. I’m stationed in VA with the Army. I’ve been trying to get someone to call back . I’m trying to put someone in contempt. I can’t do it , because I’m not physically there. I sent the correct paperwork in, But I can’t get a hold of anyone.

  • Carolinagirl 1986

The only nice person at the whole courthouse is Robert (I don't know his last name) who works in the filing office on the 3rd floor! Thank you,Robert, if you're reading this for always having a positive personality and always willing to help!! I'm giving you 5 stars, not the rest of the court house.

  • Ashley Ramos

Went to the magistrates office because someone slashed my tires and my children's above ground pool! The magistrate didn't issue a warrant even though we have her on surveillance doing it!! No wonder there is so much crime in Charlotte...they obviously let the criminals get away with it!!

  • Antonio Diggs

After 5 years they take my driver license, they want mo money I already paid them an came to they court hearing so what more they want from me. I am From Atlanta GA. I don't have tax money child support take it every year. This courthouse think money grow on trees.

  • Jeremy Goding

Jury duty was not fun. I didn't personally interact with the staff, but they were not like the DMV. Everyone was super nice, super professional and the Jury lounge was super comfortable. Good to see a government office taking customer service serious. Great job.

  • Princess Small

I was a walk-in small estate client. The first time I tried at 10am, there was no way I was hoping to be seen before 4 hours had passed. The second time, I came right at the start of the day, 9am, was seen after 70 mins and the clerk was very polite and helpful.

  • Nicole Abbondanza

If being a nasty civil servant who jumps straight to anger, blaming you for not understanding legal issues, and misinformation they're doing a great job. Thank you to the people in the clerk's office I spoke to on the phone who actually helped me.

  • jerome Bosoka

Customer service is not good on the 3rd level. Everyone has an attitude. Not very greeting. If you work for the government, you should smile more and do your job right. Customer service is very important, makes me not trust them

  • Mr. Upshaw

You never know when going to court from the street...you may not make it out...lol...personally, I've made it back out a few times. Most sheriff's are nice, well mannered, unless of course, you give them a reason... …

  • Alex

Impossible to get a hold of anyone on the phone. Clerk staff is rude and ignorant. Impossible to get a hold of child support enforcement. Judges are racist and order insane of child support for someone who shares 50/50.

  • K Ruang

Summoned for jury service. Pretty straight forward day if you follow the instructions provided. Please don’t expect a day at the spa but plan for a day of service to the community. Staff were kind and respectful.

  • Boss704CLT CLT HQ (official)

I would never thought i would say this but district attorney was more then reasonable on my traffic citation heard me out and took care of it in a very professional way. Thank you for making it right!!

  • Gayle Probe

I talked with the estate department the woman who helped me was incredibly rude and hung up on me after our discussion was over not a “thank you” or “have a nice day”! Provided no help to my question.

You all representatives or the one I've spoken to at least are so freaking rude, she answered the phone with an attitude, like I personally did something to her. Plus she was no help at all.
