Located at the main entrance to the upper town park, the statue of Princess Amélie stands at the end of the perspective axis that leads from Rue des Bains to the monument. This was the first monument erected in the Grand Duchy following its independence in 1839, dedicated to a woman – the wife of Prince-Lieutenant Henry, who ruled over Luxembourg on behalf of his brother, King-Grand Duke William III. The idea of erecting a monument emerged immediately after the death of Amélie on May 1, 1872, at Walferdange Castle. The initiative came from the ruling classes, who considered the monarchy a guarantor of national independence. Since Amélie was not a sovereign, the government couldn't support this project. The City took on this role and, from 54 submissions, selected the project penned by Charles Pêtre, director of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts of Nancy. Engineers Oscar Bélanger (1835-1884) and Tony Dutreux (1838-1933) created the monument, while the statue was the work of Jean-Antoine Injalbert (Prix de Rome). The monument was inaugurated in 1876.
