A complete rort. We attended Moonlight Cinema's screening of Love Actually in Brisbane on December 18, 2018. It's the first year since Brisbane City Council privatised the screening, and, as usual, privatising it managed to ruin everything in record time. Firstly, the price. It cost $20 to enter, which is precisely $20 more than it cost last year. So was the experience improved on the back of the entry fee? No, it was far, far worse. Even though our group of 6 shelled out $120 for "seats" and were the first ones in line, we were herded to the side of the screen, at a 45-degree viewing angle, because of the new "premium seating" area. (I can only imagine what those poor sods paid). The only other option to sitting 45 degrees to the screen was on the grass hill, about 40 metres back from the screen and partially obscured by a concrete wall. Brilliant. It wasn't all bad though... if you were happy to sit at least 50 metres back from the screen, you could get an unobscured view. Sure, you couldn't hear a thing, but the view was uninterrupted. On the Moonlight Cinema website, it stated the viewing would begin at 7.15pm or whenever the sun went down. The sun sunk behind the horizon at about 7pm and the movie finally started at 7.50pm, after a 15-minute slew of ads. Utterly ridiculous. Who's in charge here? Seriously, the entire experience was terrible, and not even Hugh Grant's innoffensive patter could salvage it. We'll never go again, and will be informing everyone we know to not waste their money. It seems word of mouth has already had an effect though, because the crowd was at least 60 per cent smaller than for the same viewing last year. I blame Brisbane City Council for privatising the event and wrecking everything, and also the shameless clowns running Moonlight Cinema who've managed to ruin a Christmas tradition in one-fell swoop thanks to their thirst for cash and total disrespect of the paying customer. Merry Christmas.

This was good in 2021 but this year they have given all of the good space to people who can pay the big money and for families who can’t afford they get shafted off to the side . It should be first in best dressed and the ticket price you pay is for the seat you hire and comfort not the viewing position. There should be good viewing positions for all not just those who can afford the 31/40$ tickets which lets be honest is totally over priced for the sound and picture quality of this outdoor cinema experience. Also everything is QR code for food and drinks which is great BUT they only have the codes at the entry and the bottom of the hill so all the people up the back have to walk down to scan the code go back up and sit and wait to be messaged to then go back down and collect order…such a simple fix it’s unfathomable how these things are overlooked when customer experience should be at the forefront of event organisers minds during setup.

I'm honestly gobsmacked this place is rated so highly. I don't normally write reviews but feel compelled to after our mediocre experience. The concept of this place is great, a movie under the stars in the fresh air, however there were two things that feel flat (Brisbane location): - I had purchased Gold Grass tickets and the part of this is wait service. When we got there for a 7:15pm movie, there was signage saying wait service finishes at 7pm which is not made clear on the website or when purchasing tickets. - Secondly there are hardly any beans in the bean bags. They're so thin and flat, obviously for ease of storing away, however this comes at the expense of the customer experience. It was impossible to get comfortable. You pay $10 each to hire them and its honestly such a waste of money. Save your money and the back pain - just go to the actual cinema.

After having been to Melbourne’s moonlight cinema we were expecting more for our $40 Gold Grass tickets. Service at the seat was poor, lots of chatting going on and hard to get attention to order. Menu was very limited and food came with no fork or serviettes. Loaded fry’s with your fingers not a pleasant experience. Food was ok. Need to focus much more on service which was almost non existent. Reduce the cost and I’ll grab my own food! Also I purchased my tickets so you have my details so why the need to sign in again. O and one more peeve, I had the tickets in my Apple Wallet but they refused entry until I could show the email? WHAT IS THE BLOODY POINT OF THAT THEN?? #moonlightcinema

Had a fantastic night at this! I admit, my partner and I only went because it was New Years Day and this was the only place near our hotel that served hot food (or really, food at all... we had planned poorly and we were hungry). But having been to this, we would be very eager to go again next time we go to Brisbane. We lashed out for Gold-Grass seats and it was completely worth it! We got to sit in comfort with a great view while we watched a fantastic show. If we lived in Brisbane we might have considered the normal seats as well, as many people looked very comfortable with their home brought chairs and picnic baskets. The whole experience just had such a nice casual atmosphere.

I have been several times to the Perth Moonlight cinema and it is awesome. Brisbane was so disappointing! If you don't book the gold class or connoisseur seats, which are very expensive then expect your view of the screen to be partially blocked. General admission, which is still nearly $20, you can either sit up the back on the grass where the bottom of the screen is blocked by a retaining wall or on the very edge of the amphitheater where you are watching at a 45 degree angle. ( This theatre is not designed for a straight movie screen) For what was meant to be a chilled night out! I was really angry and disappointed. I do not recommend . Spend your money elsewhere.

  • Victoria Ameringer

Although the concept is nice, the experience was rather disappointing. We had no idea that seats (bean bags in this case) had to be purchased in addition to the ticket. To rent a bean bag for 1.5h I had to pay $9 on top of my $14 student ticket. Quite pricey, especially since the movies are outdoors and cannot offer the comfort of an indoor cinema (seating arrangement, comfort, weather etc. are points to be criticized). In addition, our bags were checked for alcohol and food do apparently these items are not allowed? The food inside the cinema area was way too expensive. On the plus side, dogs were allowed and dog food was free. Overall, I was rather disappointed.

Some children were playing in front of the cinema with their parents. They probably didnt have any money to watch the Disney Movie "Maleficent" yesterday, so they just sat down with their parents in front of the cinema to watch the movie from a bit further away without a ticket. The security guy sent them away and didnt allow to watch the movie. Things like this show me the social injustice in this city and i find it sad to see people and especially children are getting sent away from a public spot, because they wanted to see a disney movie. I think your cinema and the security should have a bit more empathy to the people and their surrounding.

Come to see from Sydney at Brisbane. So disappointed. Organization is so bad. I bought gold grass but got no benefit at all, no beanban no food service as they said on the website. Then, I asked staffs for help, they said they have no idea about gold grass. Seems just trick for higher price? The staffs around reception and food store are friendly surely. Food is a little bit expensive, specifically for water. Bring your own food is good idea. Finally, bring your own things and just buy a normal ticket, save your money but better experience!

I wouldn’t recommend visiting if you’re a tourist. Our screening was cancelled due to a storm approaching as we were sitting waiting for the film to begin (understandably) BUT the terms of sale state that if a screening is cancelled, refunds aren’t possible and you can only receive credit to attend a different date — this is obviously fine if you live in Brisbane but we were flying home the next day. The only option we were offered was to give the credit to a friend but we don’t have any friends in Brisbane unfortunately!

  • Mmac

Pros : nice to be outside and watch a movie lying on a beanbag. Nice to bring food and treat it like a picnic. Good sized screen. Didn’t mind it flapping a little in the wind. Negatives : sound could have been done better. Not expecting perfect surround sound but the levels varied a lot from left and right speakers. Also way to loud with the ads before the movie. Prices are a bit high for what it is. $9 a 33cl beer or $9 a tiny glass of wine. Could have worked a little bit more on the atmosphere.

  • Sarah Cunningham

It's fairly priced and a fun experience. The Gold Grass bean bags looked uncomfortable, so I'm glad we didn't pay for that experience. I did pay $8 for a liter of water, but they let you bring your own food and drink so that's on me. Overall: it's a premium price for a unique kind of setting, but if you like comfort stick to the regular cinema. Recommend bringing blankets, pillows, and wear something comfortable. Bring food and drinks or use the Deliveroo to your seat option.

CHECK WEATHER FORECAST. Looked like a nice setup for an outdoor cinema. However due to a forecast of rain it was cancelled 10 minutes before the movie was due to start. Only being in the country for a couple more weeks and not visiting anymore cities with moonlight cinema, my girlfriend and myself wished to get a full refund. Unfortunately moonlight cinema have a clause in their terms and conditions to get them out of this and we will not be able to get a refund. Shocking.

  • Laura Puckett

Booked tickets for myself and 2 friends to see a particular movie; unfortunately the showing had to be cancelled due to inclement weather. Disappointingly, there was no alternative showing made for the movie we had selected in the following 2 months of the program, and there is no capacity for obtaining a refund as the expectation is that you will rebook for a future date. Most likely will now not use the tickets as no movies playing that are of interest to us!

  • Danielle Gardiner

Love going to Moonlight Cinema! Great experience, beautiful setting. Excellent movie choice, and love the service- really cool people. Only negative was that the movie started just a bit too late for the kids. Had to leave half way through. 30 mins earlier would have been perfect. I know it's difficult with lighting but as soon as the sun is low enough, for the kids movies, the movie needs to be going. :) will def be back.

  • Rachel OBrien

Great venue with clear and easy levels to sit on. Sound and visibility of movie was great. Easy to find with event signs up through the park and good partnership with secure parking facilities near by. Really friendly team working. Even the security guard was lovely. Love that you can bring in all your own picnic food and non alcoholic options. Means you can keep the costs down. Would definitely go again.

  • Alias Oner

Attended last night for the original Top Gun. What an experience, was wonderful to see one of my favorite movies of all time under the stars with the love of my life. The staff were fantastic and very accommodating, the angus beef pie was delicious as were the hot chippies. I dunno what that BBQ sauce was but I need that in my life! Would give 6 stars if the Moon was out last night!

  • Jen Madden

2nd time in a week that moonlight cinema has cancelled. I have spent $160 for tickets to 2 screenings and both cancelled due to adverse weather !!! Brisbane today 29 degrees and weather report is NO STORMS OR RAIN. Where do you get your weather reports from ? No adverse weather last week either. I'm still waiting for refund from last week's adverse weather cancellation. It's a joke

  • Charlotte Lonican

Sat behind the wall as advised by the friendly greeter, had a good clear view for the whole of the film. Sound was clear and loud for the film. Social distancing was in place. A good selection of snacks available from the hot food van - we added hot chips to our picnic. There were beanbags available for people who wanted them - there was a $10 hire fee. A very enjoyable experience.

  • bonnie carter

a few months ago you paid to get into the movie, and then you could pay extra for a premium seat that you could place anywhere. now you have to pay to get into the movie, and then pay the ridiculously overpriced price for the premium seats that are placed in the best view permanently, if u don’t pay for this you can actually see the movie. sad, this used to be a great experience.

  • Knickie Gun

We had a lovely time. The bean bags were surprisingly comfortable and the weather held up. The only issue was with the food. I read that there would be food trucks, so I expected a variety. They did have two trucks, but it was more like the food at the cinema (maybe comparable to Gold Class). It was nice snack, but not a good dinner. Otherwise, it was a very good experience.

  • Justin MacDonald

If you are looking for a chilled night out under the stars watching some movies with friends or a loved one check out moonlight cinemas. Its still a great night but the movie selections leave you a bit wanting as there were slim pickings in the 2022/23 summer. BYO food or have a few options for purchase. alcohol needs to be purchased on site. Enjoy the night out!

  • Katie Goldspink

We enjoyed our first experience at the Moonlight Cinema in Brisbane City. There was toilets, confectionery, drinks including alcoholic beverages and hot chips, pies and sausage rolls. You could bring your own food but not alcohol. My only disappointment was that there wasn't a wide selection of hot food available. Other than that it was a great experience.

  • Lauren Worley

Had booked to see the matrix but half the menu that was advertised was unavailable and bean bags have very little beans in them so super uncomfortable. Which is fine but when paying $70 for two people it’s a little frustrating Extremely over priced for what it is, as well as overpriced food with minimal options - disappointing for a gold class ticket.

  • Luke Vicary

This is only good if you take mozzie repellant with you. It's a wonderful experience, but you pay full wack for food and drink as you would expect. Bring a blanket and your own seats and arrive early. Most of the good seats are taken up by pre booked bean bags or director chairs so if you want great seating arrive early.

  • Joshua Mertens

Nice area and a novel experience to see a movie outside however charging standard (or above standard) movie prices and not providing any type of seating is disappointing. Sure there are plenty of beanbags but I feel they should be included in the price. Movie was good, location is novel, value for money is not good

  • Sarah Hulbert

This is a must do for us every summer holidays, and this year they're really improved the beanbags. Last year they felt a little flat but, whatever the bean counters did this year has really paid off. They had just the right amount of beans. See you again next year Moonlight! Hope to see the same friendly faces.

  • Stephanie Dirou

This was a great experience and I will definitely come back. The Gold Class have the best view of the screen but General Admission is fine. Pack your own food as there is alot of people buying food. BYO not allowed but plenty of alcohol on offer. Remember to take a blanket to sit on and some cushions

  • Alex

Great evening out. Recommend getting there on the opening time to secure a good spot. Unfortunately can't take your own booze but happy to pay the prices there for something different. Good atmosphere and the staff were friendly. Good choice of films also. Recommend giving it a go.

  • WillSyn

Had a great night! The staff were super helpful at the gate. Once we took our seat we ordered through the app which actually advises you when your items are ready which was so much easier. All staff had smiles on and were really friendly. Definitely would come again!

  • Douglas Bohmer

Was great service, setting. My only issue was they played a version of bohemian rapsody which had bold karaoke subtitles (unadvertised). Not the end of the world, still a great movie setting and experience, but I wouldn't have booked that movie had I known.

  • Nathan Haywood

A different way of watching a movie. Make sure you take a few cushions and blankets unless you want to pay for a bean bag. Ads can be a bit loud. Good selection of food and drinks for dinner and desert. Better quality than the drive ins if you have been.

  • Mark O'Neill

Moonlight cinema removes all the comforts of going to the cinema for the experience of watching a movie in the outdoors. Not to worry though, those creature comforts - comfortable seating, a good view - can be returned to you, however, at a price.

  • Seonghee Bang

OMG.. It is really shocking .. pay $20.00 for a rubbish area where you can hardly see the full screen. If you need money, just ask to people (who ever made this rubbish way to make money). It is unbelieve and cheating.. $20.00 for this

  • Pierce Townson

The expensive "Gold Grass" seating is the only option if you want to actually see the screen. General admission on the grass has a view that cuts off the bottom half of the screen. Good cinema concept executed very poorly. Save your money.

  • Tamara Robinson

Had a great time watching the movie from the hill. Cheaper tickets allow you more room to relax & the view is just as good. Free samples from the sponsors available, Uber delivered our dinner to the gate. Overall, a great night.

  • Linda Sciasci

First moonlight cinema experience: $9 for 1.5hr use of bean bag. $7 for small beer, $16 for the worst and smallest nachos I’ve even ordered all on top of the entry fee!! Very disappointing. Won’t be recommending this to anyone.

  • Artem Moskvyak

The ticket clearly states: “Film start 7:15pm”. Why do you feed people with useless commercials for another 15 minutes? They are not even related to movies! Just be honest and say “Ads start 7:15pm, but film starts 7:30pm”

  • Camila & Willy

Pay $20 to have a concrete wall covering half of the screen. Seriously, Brisbane City Council? Show some respect to the public, we felt so cheated. Super uncomfortable and unfair to the public. Not. recommended. at. all.

  • Vanida Walsh

Was ok only thing I said was I pay for gold pass but the seat were uncomfortable it's too hight from the original stand it's just not feel good compared with the seat that normal they seem more comfortable then we are

  • Priya N

I really enjoyed the moonlight cinema. It was so chill and nice to bring our own picnic while watching the movies outdoors with friends. The ticket prices are quite reasonable and the staff were so nice and friendly.

  • Kieran Caldwell

Great way to spend a summer's evening. Lead up to Christmas, with classic Christmas films offer great grass seats. GoldGrass get front and centre. Had such a lovely time with my friends. Would recommend. …

  • Stephen Henderson

A great way to spend an evening, watching a movie out in the open air. Best to take your own food and drinks although there is hot food and alcohol there. Take your own picnic chair and blanket too.

  • Leisha Carter

Great for gold grass if you can get discounted tickets, annoying they don't have hot cinema popcorn, may as well byo given what they charge for exactly the same as what you can buy at a supermarket

  • Derek Kaknes

Very fun experience - would recommend bringing a pillow that you can lean back against in the tiered seating. Extra fun as you get to see (and hear) the flying foxes come out as the sun goes down.

  • Mabel McCormack

Awesome experience! Really enjoyed sitting out in the parklands watching the big screen. The quality of the speakers was also great! Staff were really friendly. We can’t wait to go again :)

  • Health Tips

Amazing location to enjoy a movie!! I wish they werent out of popcorn :(( Thats technically the most important part of watching a movie but still recommended. I will defonitely go again

  • Rory O'Connor

Buyer Beware!!!! They can cancel the session without providing you any refund, they claim it is allowed in the T&Cs. They demand you rebook on days that don’t suit you for films

  • Kerrie Feathers (Kewie_bear)

Was very nice to sit outside on a comfey picnic rug and watch a movie with the family. Next time I will be aware of any big events as parking can be tricky.

  • T Y

Very nice seating as well as lots of great shows for the family to enjoy. Went there for the tempest play and really enjoyed it would recommend for all ages

  • Cheryl Tsan

It was a good experience but make sure you check the weather.. With 0 chance of rain.. Even continuous drizzling rain can get a lil annoying

  • Kasey Whittaker

we absolutely love the outdoor cinema! such a fun experience. pack a picnic and go see a movie asap. take your doggo if they're friendly.

  • Francesco Di Donna

Went for a movie night!! Really cool to watch movie under the stars! The 4 star it's because it could be more clean before those events!

  • GIMP

Great atmosphere with beautiful lawn, well organised and easy to park and get to. Can even take your fur babies if you want. Recommend.

  • RZ

It's an awesome experience however, since it was our first time watching at an open air cinema we didn't bring any mat and pillows.

  • Caity Brems

Had a great experience in connoisseur lounge, the staff were lovely and we got some great freebies!! Food was also nice and hot :)

  • Elyssa Wedd

Great place to watch the latest flicks. Perfect place to socialise with friends & have some nibbles. So handy to Brisbane CBD.

  • Sue Sanders

A nice experience. Service ok. Snacks a little expensive, being tourists, we did not realise we could have bought our own.

  • Stephen Paice

Great location this year in the Roma Street Parklands. Just bring a back pillow as well us one for your posterior …

  • AF

Lovely place, we watched three billboards outside ebbing missouri. Don’t forget your mosquito spray, alcohol not allowed

  • John Wilson

If you need to see a movie tben why not see it outside in the fresh air with some nourishment and a drink? Great idea!

  • Gourav verma

Good to enjoy movie under moonlight with your mates and don't worry about food as they have food and drink bar.

  • Paul Budde

Always a special outing, enjoying movies in the setting of one of the most beautiful garden parks in Australia

  • Kerrin Shattock

Good for a different experience. Volume of movie was good. Was strange to eat food and have peoples dogs there

  • Rachel Benson

Great vibe and great movie selection. Recommed the AAMI Gold Grass for a bit of extra comfort & wait service

  • Brayden Miles

Loved the moonlight cinema, only bad part is that it only runs in summer but other than that it was amazing

  • Fonthip Ward

Love the atmosphere here. Feel good every time I come here. Good way to spend a picnic dinner with family.

  • Chris Evans

Great outdoor cinema! A little noisy and cars headlights sometimes flashed in your eyes. But so much fun

  • Glenn Mundy

Pretty good. Beautiful night in Brisbane. Great sound too for the movie. Will come again for sure …

  • Sam McGregor

Arrived at the cinema. The movie had been cancelled. We were not notified in any way. Wasted our time.

  • Sascha Byrne

AMAZING LOVELY ROUGE, everyone so nice atmosphere 10/10 when is next movie i want more moonlight!!!!

  • David Balcarcel

A good & safety way to enjoy a movie with your friends or family. They have good safety procedures.

  • Dmitry S.

Food/drinks app is ugly and requires a table number for some reason. Service is also quite mediocre

  • Michael

Great place to take a picnic, take a blanket to lie on and watch a good film. Shall be returning
