I'm a fairly experienced video store customer. I started my journey in stores filled with Video Home System cassettes and customers with mullets and denim (yes...including the women it was the fashionable Midwest after all). Through my years on this spinning globe I've been to other independent stores of good quality. I can safely say MM is very likely the best movie rental store in the United States and it sits right here in this fine Rose City. It offers things you can't even get digitally streamed. Even if you could get it streamed you miss out on the sweet sweet goodness of the extras on say Criterion collection versions. I recently rented Koyaanisqatsi: Life Out of Balance, watched all the extra content providing more info, and I'm changed forever. Also, if you streamed it you'd like pay the same price or more to the Evil Empire that is Amazon. Just check MM out (for pickup or in store browse) and the easy to use drop boxes around town. It's a great store and my visits for rentals during the Plague year(s ?) likely saved parts of my sanity. Disclaimer: I have no affiliation with MM. I just really enjoy it.

Movie Madness in Portland was a fun stop in today. I only found out about this place by word of mouth from this gal who was a guest too at the Campfire hotel in Bend. The hot tub jets were so weak so it got me talking about movies to this random other guest and she mentioned I had to go see this place before heading to my hotel for flight back tomorrow so I did! I was amazed by the amount of movies and all categorized so neatly! Plus all the real movie props! Am thankful on the suggest and was fairly easy to find. The only thing that threw me off was the lack of happiness and lack of energy of the clerk and I tried hard to show my enthusiasm being there and I tried to engage a few times! Plus I said I'd review too and just over his head and brushed off. But whatevs! Still was good to stop in! Just have found that other cities like Bend and Newport have friendlier happier service in general than my first Portland experience coming from Canada. Real costumes worn too was nice to see!

This is the last remaining remnant of movie rentals in Portland that isn't in a little automated kiosk the Museum of movie artifacts that they have is right up there with Ripley's Believe it or not or wax work and the movie selection is so massive it would take somebody their entire life to even crack into all the movies and TV shows and things that they have for rent. Going to have to say that movie Madness is by far the most consistent thing and all of Portland. Just got back from a free showing in their little theater and have to say it's the best theater in Portland. Got a t-shirt got treats got a Beer soda and popcorn and I still spent less than if I had gone to an actual theater. I also don't feel bad supporting movie Madness like I do the big theaters. Portland keep going and renting and viewing and buying things so that way movie Madness will always be here for generations to come.

This is the best place in Portland. The employees are brilliant movie people who are engaging and outgoing, welcoming and all around lovely. They have nearly everything on physical media, and if it happens to have a new restoration blu-ray or 4K, they likely have it. They host screenings and events regularly. Oh and also they are a cool little museum of props with not one but three Stan Winston creatures from Alien alone. Pro-tip. Get a membership and rent your little movie loving heart out. It also makes you a member at Hollywood Theater. I’ve since moved away from Portland, but I’m going to maintain my Movie Madness membership because I love this place so much.

As the video delivery landscape continues to evolve, Movie Madness continues doing what they have always done best - having whatever you're looking for. We recently had a visitor who remembered a film that she had only seen in the theater in the early 1950s. The staff at Movie Madness was able to point us to the right part of the store, and I received the benefit of yet again seeing something from this wonderful store that I had never seen before. If you want to expand your horizons beyond the latest sequels in the multiplex, you owe it to yourself to wander the shelves at Movie Madness

Fabulous place. This is a true gem of Portland! You can peruse the thousands of movies they have for rental (not available on streaming services), check out the weird, funny, and cool old movie memorabilia, or you can rent out the private 18 seat screening theater for you and your friends to watch any movie in their collection! We rented the theater and it was super fun - everyone had a blast! They have a bar for beer and wine on site, but you can bring your own food. It was a great place to have a birthday party. Highly recommend renting the theater.

Heads up!!! they dropped their mask requirement. If you want to ask about their previous program of prepping movies for pick up, I personally got a response of "there's always streaming" which is a uh.... An off-putting response from your small, local movie rental spot (I assumed they also preferred physical media). Just wish for some passing compassion for movie fans who can't "safely" expose themselves to airborne viruses and will face tough choices between supporting beloved local spots and possible exposure to disabling illness

Astounding video rental store with an encyclopedic 80,000 titles on hand in every genre to delight cinephiles. Quirky and definitely inviting filing system by country of film's origin further subdivided into sections devoted to noted directors and acclaimed actors in that region of the world. So carefully curated as to invite hours of browsing. Free memberships and modest $3.00 rental fees for most titles. Select used dvds to buy as well at very fair prices. Film lovers and cinema groupies and movie magic fan flash mobs unite here!

Visiting from Chicago, I occasionally still see an odd video shop but Movie Madness has such a massive collection of horror, cult, Kung fu, rare, and weird movies coupled with its museum of props and costume sprinkled throughout the store- it’s second to none. While it’s mostly rental, even as a visitor I had a good time seeing the artifacts of film and perusing the many rare and odd film selections. They have snacks and beer (you can drink in store) and a friendly staff who are cinema nerds themselves.

  • Christopher Thomas

Having worked at a video store back east for almost 8 years, I can say that Movie Madness is, bar none, the best one out there as far as selection goes. Their level of organization is fantastic, they make it easy to check what movies are in stock, and most of the staff I've interacted with are very friendly. There was one guy a couple of years ago who was supremely rude, but I haven't seen him since so it's likely he moved on. Seriously, though, the rest are all friendly and the store is great.

Can't begin to explain how cool this spot is... Movie memorabilia, free screenings on Sundays, hundreds of movies.. Spent an hour here and I feel we only scratched the surface. They have a pumpkin you can draw scary movie names out of if you need help choosing and I got "peices" a 1982 UK horror slasher movie. I enjoyed it. I wish we could rent movies for longer than 3 days before a late fee but it's not crazy expensive so it's okay. Grab some popcorn and wander around, totally worth a stop in.

  • Kellyn Croy

Really awesome place! We we're hesitant but all the reviews were so good that we decided to stop by! They have an enormous selection; I wanted sooo many movies! The props and costumes they have are really neat too. It's a really fun place to spend some time and maybe even rent an obscure or popular movie. We will be back for certain! If you want something in particular, they have a database computer for you to look things up which is super helpful, and the staff knows where movies are.

  • Dan Calahan

Hell yeah!! This place is amazing! I’m one of those people who miss the days of walking through a video rental store and looking at all the movies. This place is epic in the video rental realm and you are making a mistake if you don’t come here! So so many movies and genres, with cool pieces of history from many different movies. So fun to just walk around…it’s like a museum. I totally wish they had a spot like this back in Colorado. Long live Movie Madness!

  • Kathleen Greenhaw

Best and one of the only places in town now with rental videos plus the largest selection of films from so many prominent directors, a myriad of genres, and across all eras. Super cool people. Amazing museum of film relics. Been thinking of becoming a Hollywood member as well to take advantage of some of those benefits too. Definitely one of the wonders of Portland that one must check out if visiting from out of town.

  • Chase Graves

How could I not give one of the last, long-standing rental stores a peak review? I don't have to mention the amazing atmosphere, museum-like showcases, massive library of things you've never heard of and fan favorites alike, as well as the stellar staff and merch, munchies, and libations-- everyone before me has already mentioned them. Go check it out, it's a movie rental store. Support them!!

  • Brian Vistaunet

It’s actually quire nice to get out of the house and go rent a video and this place is such a great, quirky vibe. Convenience isn’t everything. This is also an experience and a tradition. I didn’t realize how much I missed it during the pandemic until I started going again recently. Movie Madness continues to deliver with selection, affordability, clean discs and solid customer support.

  • Jacquline Ohmer

Seriously one of the best things I’ve found in Portland. Say goodbye to paying for multiple subscriptions to streaming services. Say goodbye to paying a bunch of money for individual Disney and Studio Ghibli movie rentals online. And say goodbye to malware because with Movie madness, you don’t have to pirate your favorite shows and movies you can’t find or are too expensive online.

  • Brandon Siddall

The greatest place in Portland to find any movie that you can think of virtually. You want it on VHS they got it. You want it on DVD they got that too. Blu-ray oh yeah they got that. Funky little adult movies you know they got that too. If you haven't been to movie Madness even just to walk around and check it out then you are doing yourself a disservice.

  • Rachel Ellis

Really neat film/video establishment. If you’re looking for something, they most likely have it or know where to find it! The rentals and viewings are a great bang for your buck. Good selection of movie snacks, too! Be sure to check out the movie memorabilia display for fun surprises! The spaces is super clean and always has friendly and helpful staff.

  • Ja'net Vespertine

Went in to see if an account we had some years ago was still on file. Turns out it was, from 2005! Awesome! Paid our late fees and rented some out of print films. We love this store, and drive an hour from out of town to enjoy their rentals. They have special showings and other fun events that we're going to have to start attending.

  • Otimepilot

Great place to find that hard to find movie that can't even be found streaming anywhere. This is a non-profit so be kind to the people behind the counter, they are volunteers. Just a small note that where the movies are located can be a little confusing as it's sometimes set up by director, star or sub genre, so take note of that.

  • Andrea F

When I lived in town, I used to love coming to browse the offerings and just pick random titles to check out and watch. Some were good, some were bad, but worth it all. I love this place. The employees are great, it's clean. I came again when I was visiting my brother and his wife. Love it. Unisex restroom. Easily accessible.

  • Nathan Guynn

MM is truly the greatest Video store in the World. It’s like a museum with artifacts, costumes and movie memorabilia you can’t see anywhere else. Bonus is they teamed up with Hollywood Theatre and are better than ever with a rentable private miniplex screening room. Pdx Legendary status. 80,000 rentals available and counting!

  • Christopher Tipton

I love this place. It's a dying breed unfortunately. People these days are so into social media and streaming they forget about the giants who started it all. I have a huge collection of DVDs and VHS tapes and love to watch and enjoy them quite frequently. Please help promote and conserve this place Portland.

  • Nathan

They have every movie you could want to watch and more. Being able to go somewhere to rent a movie is a great feeling of nostalgia but it's more than that. There's no better start to a movie night than going in somewhere and searching for a movie first, browsing streaming sites just doesn't compare.

  • Anna Gonzales

Makes me miss working at a video store back in the 90s. This place has so much to choose from and films that you can't find elsewhere with its "out of print" options to rent. They also screen films in their mini-plex. I love the memorabilia from all different types of films and the staff picks.

  • Zach Miller

What's not to love. It's weird, it's wild, and it's a icon for the city. Also, from a practical perspective they have just an incredible selection of movies you aren't going to find elsewhere: international, animation, cult films, monster movies, art house, and outsider movies. Truly amazing.

  • Tamra Franck

I didn't go to rent any movies but from what I saw they have the best selection of DVD and VHS yes VHS. The museum part was so much fun to look at different clothes or props from movies and TV shows. To top it all off it's free unless you rent something but the rental prices are outstanding!

  • Joshua Jacobs

What a cool place! They have an amazing selection of titles, all of them are very well organized, the staff is very knowledgeable and friendly, and their rates are very affordable! I am super impressed, and very stoked that I now have a place to rent movies again. Thank you for being here!

  • Scott Rousse

So many reasons to love this place: it's vast, well-organized collection of movies, reasonable pricing, three-day rentals, a return dropbox right out front as well as one at the Hollywood Theater, and above all, the wave of video rental store nostalgia you feel every time you step inside.

  • Sara Wuillermin

This is every 80s/90s kids' dream come true. Fantastic selection of movies across a wide number of genres. Rental prices are reasonable and added bonus: you can grab a beer while you browse. Staff was friendly and helpful. If I lived in the area I would definitely be a regular!

  • That Hoodoo Lady

I needed some palette cleansing movies after the crazy most recent horrible verdict. Needed some tranquility and found the best selection of videos ever. I am so impressed and happy. They also have new an extra day to return my videos because of my location. Thank you!!

  • Emily Schultz

Wow. If you haven't gone-go! Not only is this nostalgic back to Blockbuster days but it's WAY better than that because of the memorabilia, and the wide variety of films. It's a good time. Even if you don't walk out with anything. It's a museum first and foremost, truly.

  • Xenomorph6793

Movie Madness has so many cool vintage/new movies as well as TV series for rent in blue ray and DVD, for very cheap prices. Not only that, they have a couple theaters that they regularly have showings of classic movies in; you can buy concessions at the counter

  • Trevor Tolva

The last of the great video stores. Overwhelming in almost every way possible and yet it's the most lovely, passionate piece of nostalgic candy in the city. A must see for everyone. Really cool screenings on Sundays as well in their little theater.

  • Libby Parra

Any movie lovers dream spot - it's full of awesome movie props and costumes and their film selection is unreal. Been fed up of constant scrolling through streaming platforms to find a film so it's fun to intentionally pick something out to watch.

  • Sarah Hausman

This is one of Portland's greatest treasures. Movie Madness has the most phenomenal selection of movies you'll find anywhere, and they're brilliantly organized (there's a section dedicated to Canadian Horror films for goodness sake) to make

  • Ian Irwin

This is most likely the greatest video rental store left in America. Leave it to Portland to keep a business model that is all but extinct thriving and exciting. They have original props from famous (and cult) movies all over the place, and

A true Portland institution. Got just about any dang movie you could possibly think of, in one format or another. Love their candy selection, and the fact that you can just buy a popcorn, even if you're not there for a screening. You could

movie rentals as well as a museum! The soap bar from fight club is on display here, and they have a free theater. Ive been watching yakuza movies, anime, kaiju movies, and classics. They have new movies and movies that are hard to find.

  • Emmett McGregor

The largest publicly available selection of DVDs, Blue ray, and more in the country, or possibly the world? It is hard not to spend hours simply browsing the shelves. Their rental rates are reasonable, generally better than streaming

  • Gabe Zatz

Amazing video rental place. They have an amazing movie collection, very knowledgeable staff and a great collection of original memorabilia. Almost like a museum. They also have a decent selection of fine beers and other fancy drinks.

  • Daniel Berg-Johnsen

Rent here before going to Amazon or Apple streaming. It's usually the same price if not cheaper for a rental. Bend might have the last Blockbuster from the 90s but Movie Madness is a hundred time's better and has that same nostalgic

  • val patton

The staff is super friendly and really knowledgeable and welcoming of any questions. Walking into this place is like you've visited a film museum with props from films. The movie selection is amazing and their movie organization is

They will send your account to debt collections three years after you rented one $16 video for your grandma during the pandemic and will hit you with a $118 fee. They’re extremely hard to get ahold of for these types of issues.

  • Michael Gold

This place is a treasure. It is a fun place to visit. Not only do they have an incredible selection of movies to choose from, but their museum of memorabilia makes the trip to their brick and mortar location worthwhile.
