Antwerp is a great destination if you enjoy smaller museums with collections of early Netherlandish artworks. One of the great collections can be found at Museum Mayer van den Bergh. Note that if you also intend to visit Rubenshuis, and you should, you can avail of a combo ticket which includes entrance into both museums. This museum is the residence of Fritz Mayer van den Bergh, the late 19th century collector of fine art, whose collection demonstrates his knowledge, tastes and appreciation for art from the Low Countries that was ahead of his time. Mayer van den Bergh was particularly interested in the works of the Pieter Brueghel the Elder and you can see two of his works 'Twelve Proverbs of Wooden Plates' and the masterpiece known as Mad Meg (1561) here in Room 5. Mad Meg is a remarkable painting that very much shows the influence Hieronymus Bosch had on period artists like Brueghel. Its a astonishing artwork that is very enjoyable to look over. You can also see outstanding works from the Middle Ages and Renaissance periods, such as the triptych Temptation of St. Anthony (c. 1510) credited to the Master of Saints' Figures from Bruges, the Pieter Huys - Temptation of St. Anthony (1577) and Christ Carrying the Cross (c. 1540) by a follower of Hieronymus Bosch. There are also impressive Baroque, landscape and still Life paintings as well as sculptures to view in this well curated museum. All fifteen rooms are filled with lovely artworks that are enjoyable to view. In all, you can easily spend a couple hours here enjoying the works. If short on time, 30 minutes should be fine to view the highlights or stay much longer if you like what you are seeing. When you find yourself in places like Museum Mayer van den Bergh, it often best to just take your time to look over the artworks, find pieces that you really like and just enjoy yourself.

Interesting little museum that I found it a bit scary, but it doesn't deny the fact that the place is full of unique art pieces, which is a must-see. Not too crowded in the evening. A little booklet is provided as a guide (audio guide wasn't available), a bit hard to read in the darker parts of the museum. Some works of art were located in a different room than described in the booklet. The museum is free with the Museumm pass card. You can place your backpack in a security box for free (to close it, you need a 1€ coin, or you can ask for a box coin at the ticket office). Staff is a bit rude if you have questions. That's why only 3 stars

Today I was here with my husband at 16.30 o'clock. It took us a long time to get here and we really wanted to get to the museum. But when we walked in and asked about the ticket, the man told us that all the tickets were sold out, and the woman with short hair (she was next to him) started laughing. I doubt the museum was sold out. since there were few people there. I think this behavior of the museum workers is a little strange... at 17.00 the museum closes. My husband and I are very punctual and good young people. We would not delay workers.

Interesting place with wide range of art collections of Fritz Mayer van den Bergh. The only room with audio is on the first floor, the rest you have to read it through the book they provided. Most of the arts information are in dutch. But they provide the book in English as well. What’s interesting is that they have a candy corner where you can guess what’s the flavor based on one of the painting. Cost €8 for public under 25 years old.

Prachtige collectie in een even mooie setting.

Amazing little museum that was once the house of the businessman turned art collector Fritz Mayer van den Bergh, who often travelled around Europe in search of artworks to add to his collection. The museum hosts some remarkable paintings, most notably by Pieter Brughel, whom Fritz was a big fan of. There are also numerous religious artifacts, jewelry and pottery, among others. I really recommend it if you like art.

What a magnificent collection of beauty! The building itself was worth a visit of a few hours. I enjoyed watching each corner. If you're interested in art from Dutch speaking part of Europe (nowadays Belgium and partially The Netherlands) then this is the place to be. You will find art in various forms: from paintings to sculptures to jewelry. You'll definitely need a few hours if you like to study each piece.

Truly a hidden gem! I originally went to the Rubens House, but it was closed for renovations. So I went to the museum nearby. I was really enthralled by the Mad Meg. It will also give you a taste of the life of the bourgeoisie in the 19th century Antwerp. Very nice and friendly staff too. A memorable visit!

I personally loved it, especially more than Ruben’s house. It was full of old art. The paintings were amazing and beautiful as were the statues. My favorite room was the last one (no spoiler here). As the story emerged and the lightness of the room inspired me and my boyfriend. But it’s more of a preference since that’s my favorite historical period

Aanrader.

Interesting story of the history of the museum and the building itself it's nice to visit, especially the garden! The collection varies a lot - suppose you like old masters you will like here. The Madonna is def a highlight - should visit here for it solely. It's so contemporary - can't believe it was created that long ago!

Good pieces. Bit haphazard, but it is an eclectic personal collection. The mood of the museum is dark, very dark. People are nice, but the house felt oppresive and unfriendly. Lighting is problematic. Lots of reflections. I had to move my head around quite a bit. I wished I liked it more... Meer

Amazing collections. The story of Mr Fritz Mayer van den Burgh and his mother is very touching too . The Mad Meg is really a masterpiece. Though everyone loves Pieter Bruegel,Quentin Matsys, the smith painter, also great, if I remember it right a very old bar in the town has his painting.

  • Luc Herman

An atmospheric house turned into a rich museum. Mostly medieval and Renaissance art with an emphasis on religious art. Very well presented, with a nice audio guide and a booklet that explains plenty of what is being shown. And a little candy to tickle your taste buds!

This place was superb. It has one of the best collections of Brugal's artwork. The man behind this collection was key to defining and persevering his works. It really is a gem of a museum in Antwerp.
