Franz Kafka's museum stands as a testament to his profound contribution to our comprehension of the absurd, a theme that permeates his work and challenges our very understanding of reality. This museum, dedicated to preserving his legacy, offers visitors a glimpse into the intricate labyrinth of Kafka's mind, but it also highlights the darkness that makes his writings a formidable literary challenge. Kafka's exploration of the absurd is unparalleled in its depth and complexity. His stories, such as "The Metamorphosis" and "The Trial," confront readers with bizarre, illogical situations that defy explanation. In doing so, Kafka forces us to confront the inherent absurdity of existence, where individuals are often trapped in incomprehensible bureaucracies and alienated from their own identities. The museum serves as a visual representation of this theme, with its winding corridors and bewildering exhibits, mirroring the disorienting experiences found in Kafka's narratives. However, it is precisely the darkness of Kafka's work that makes it a daunting challenge for readers. His exploration of themes like alienation, guilt, and the futility of human existence delves into the deepest recesses of the human psyche. The museum's ambiance and displays reflect this darkness, creating an atmosphere that can be unsettling and overwhelming. Visitors are confronted with the weight of Kafka's themes, mirroring the sense of unease that often accompanies his writings. Kafka's extensive body of work, though remarkable, can be overwhelming due to its sheer volume. The museum's extensive collection of manuscripts, letters, and personal artifacts offers a glimpse into the vastness of Kafka's literary output. Navigating through this trove of material can be akin to wandering through a literary labyrinth, where readers must grapple with Kafka's intricate prose and elusive symbolism. In conclusion, Kafka's museum is a poignant tribute to a writer who pushed the boundaries of literature and our understanding of the absurd. It invites us to explore the depths of his dark and enigmatic world, challenging us to confront the unsettling aspects of existence. While Kafka's work may be difficult to read, it remains a profound and enduring contribution to the world of literature, and his museum serves as a fitting testament to his enduring legacy.

Underwhelming. The museum itself involved lots of reading but little to no audio/visual stimulation. No documentaries really, although there were a few very confusing looped films that weren't really related to Kafka in any way. There was a whole section where in each corridor there were 1-3 exhibits displayed. Seemed like they were just trying to fill out the empty space really. The written information wasn't very in-depth either. I feel like I didn't really learn anything. Weirdest of all was the museum shop??? There were exactly THREE Kafka's works. Not even his most popular ones. The Trial, the Metamorphosis or even the Castle that the museum seemed to talk so much about throughout the exhibition? Nope, nowhere to be found. Letters to Milena, or just a collection of his most interesting letters? Also nope. There was however a tiny book including his ONE letter to his father. Yet the other half of the gift shop was filled with generic Prague souvenirs you can find in every other shop here. For the museum in the city/country Franz Kafka spent such a huge part of his life in, they really didn't do the country's most popular author any justice.

Was disappointed in this museum. I always try to accentuate the positive and maybe my expectations were to high. This was a very dark exhibit literally and some sections I couldn't read the information as it was white and were backlit about 25%of displays you can't read I will try to help you with some information to make it easier for you. 1. When you get to entry area you will a see Statue with 2 men peeing. (See pics)Look to left you will see museum shop. That is where you buy tickets for museum. Our cashier was not very friendly or helpful. 2. Upon exit of shop go directly across the courtyard to museum entrance. 3.The entrance has storage lockers for you and they will take your tickets. 4. Follow arrows to displays. There here is a section where arrows backtrack in first section. There is an area showing movie. To the left of this area is a WC in corner. Behind the movie you will see glas tables with arrow to follow. 5. Main focus of museum is his life and family in Prague.

Hezky vyvedené muzeum prezentuje většinu prvních vydání Kafkových děl, korespondenci, deníky, rukopisy, fotografie a kresby, které v minulosti nikdy nebyly vystavovány. Expozice je rozdělena do dvou částí - první (Existenční prostor) seznamuje s hlavními událostmi Kafkova života a vlivy prostředí té doby. Druhá (Imaginární topografie) ukazuje proměnu fyzické reality Prahy a jeho života v metaforický obraz v autorových dílech. Well-presented museum shows most of the first editions of Kafka's works, correspondence, diaries, manuscripts, photographs and drawings that have never been exhibited in the past. The exhibition is divided into two parts - the first (Existential space) introduces the main events of Kafka's life and the influences of the environment of that time. The second (Imaginary Topography) shows the transformation of Prague's physical reality and it´s life in a metaphorical image in the author's works.

  • Fabio Mesters

Mostly copies and facsimilies of Kafka's letters and books that have been provided by other museums where the actual originals are stored. The first half tries to immerse you into the city of Prague at the turn of the 20th century and does a reasonable job, the reconstructed and audio-enhanced videos from the time were easily my favourite part. The latter half of the exhibition is dedicated to Kafka's works, his various friends, lovers and struggles and his overall mindspace. Not bad, some rooms are uniquely designed but overall very little interactivity and lots of reading long walls of text (which I suppose is to be expected from an exhibition about an author). All in all, definitely shows its' age and not sure it's really worth the ~ 11€ entrance fee for adults. If you're on a limited time or budget, skip this one.

The Franz Kafka Museum is dedicated to the life and work of the famous Czech writer. It is located in the Old Town of Prague, in a former insurance agency building that Kafka worked in for a time. The museum has a variety of exhibits, including original manuscripts, letters, and photographs of Kafka. There are also interactive displays that explore Kafka's themes of alienation, bureaucracy, and the absurdity of modern life. The museum's permanent exhibition is divided into three sections: Kafka's life, Kafka's work, and Kafka's legacy. The museum shop sells a variety of Kafka-related merchandise, including books, posters, and souvenirs The ticket price for the Franz Kafka Museum is 260 CZK (about €11) for adults, 170 CZK (about €7) for students and seniors, and free for children under 6

Not worth it. Admission is 300czk, which is overpriced for what has been offered. The staff is borderline rude, the museum lacks any real value. One reason might be, that Kafka himself (and I am not talking about his achievements when it comes to literature) apparently was a pretty boring person. Chapters of his life that are covered include: His way to school and that the cook he walked with threatened him to tell his teacher about his little naughty moments and his work as some sort of work place safety inspector. Well… what a boring life and I am seriously wondering… when this exhibition has been curated… didnt it struck their mind that he was just… not worth a museum? I dont know. Personally I can‘t recommend it. But others seem to like it ‍♂️

My attention was attracted by the sculpture at the entrance. It was amusing and funny. I got a perfect chance to take a photo with it. It probably somehow indicated my next journey into the Kafka Museum! I am very interested in his work and his life experience since school time, and this museum has carried out a brilliant job of presenting what we know, and what we don't know about this great, complex and fascinating guy. The whole experience is well worth the entry price (if you are truly a fan of Kafka). I spent my time walking around and reading those narratives about him including his diaries - I also realised it was not only about him - it was about some interesting history OF PRAGUE as well! I would highly recommend this place as a place to go in Prage. I enjoyed this journey very much and I hope you do as well!!

  • &Tilly [andtillycom]

It’s exciting and super nice to find a museum dedicated to such a dark, great personality of literature. We enjoyed learning more about him and his life, and there’s plenty of English texts and translations so even as a tourist you’ll understand. That being said, for the price (300 CZK for 1 adult), the museum could offer more, especially storytelling wise. Most if the info is in ‘pieces’, shards of the context and not said in a storyline that would be easy to follow. I’d appreciate more explanations, more context, more user-friendliness in general. The museum is a good idea but kind of counts on the visitor to already know the basics and to put the pieces together in their head, and not always that felt easy. Which is why I think fir the money it’s for 3*** and not more.

  • Selin C.

When I attempted to take a photo at the museum shop, as there was no ‘no-photography’ sticker at the entrance, an employee approached me with the remark, ‘Are you from the press? Do you take photos like this in other people’s houses?’ Normally, if I had been politely informed that photography is prohibited here, I would, of course, have responded with an apology like, ‘I’m sorry, I didn’t know,’ and I might even have felt embarrassed. However, an employee working in a museum dedicated to a literary figure, particularly, should be aware that such treatment is uncalled for. I hope that the museum will take this matter seriously and ensure that visitors are treated more kindly and respectfully in the future.

Note: for bookworms and those who read more than "The trial" or "Metamorphosis" if you want to truly understand everything and achieve full experience. If not, you won't be satisfied with "papers, books and lots of notes written on the walls" Anyway, For CZK 260 you get a beautiful, artistically styled museum with lots of visual and sound effects. They even created a gloomy atmosphere to represent Kafka as close as possible. A perfect opportunity to dive into Kafka's mind. There are several of his personal belongings, lots of documents and his handwriting. Even some sketches when he was in his artistic era! And of course, lots of mind-intriguing quotes from his books.

I peggior soldi spesi a Praga.

The exhibition is okay. I have the feeling that some people who rated it 1 star didn't actually see or find the additional rooms - they say it has "2 rooms" but clearly didn't visit the larger area about his relationships, the weird creepy stairway, or the Kafkaesque maze of filing shelves. I say this because during my visit there were many people in the initial ones and almost nobody in the later rooms. Look for the slightly hidden doorway off to the right. Nonetheless, it could have been better.

In my opinion, the Kafka Museum might not be the most captivating attraction to visit. While it provides insight into the life and works of Franz Kafka, the overall experience might fall short of expectations. The museum's presentation and exhibits could benefit from more engaging elements to truly bring his legacy to life. If you're not a die-hard Kafka enthusiast, you might find other attractions in Prague more worth your time and interest.

Worthwhile to visit if you are a Kafka enthusiast but perhaps boring and expensive for someone who doesn't know much about Kafka. The museum includes Kafka's hand writings, earlier editions of his books, and a lot of photos and information about his life. This information also helps you locate other interesting destinations in your Prague trip, e.g. different houses where Kafka lived in, or his favourite bars, etc. It takes about one hour or more to visit the museum.

Enjoyed learning more about Kafka and the museum itself was surprisingly large. It definitely had interesting bits and pieces (the things about his relationship with his father were most interesting to me), but ultimately it wasn't that special all together. Would recommend a visit, but I find it just a little too pricey. And there was no air conditioning, it was 30° outside but also super warm inside.

  • George TMB

A pretty small museum with not much to see. There is basically one floor of letters to and from Kafka, information about his family, and some weird movies about Prague that don't have much to do with Kafka. Expected to see manuscripts, books, some of his personal belongings, maybe something else that's interesting. You can be done with the whole thing in about 5 minutes. 10 if you read everything. Still, it had a nice vibe inside.

The displays focus heavily on text samples but the very b low lighting level makes reading text hard. Some text is confused by overlays. Some is high on the wall of a set of steps. The snippets of text are not well woven into a story. They feel random. Better to stay at home and read some Wikipedia articles. PS the design of the building lacks both ventilation and Aircon. Don’t go on even a warm day.

I came here because I am a fan of Kafka writings. I read some of his works back in college for an existential philosophy course. No other writer has entered the vernacular in the current age like kafka. The term kafkaesque accurately describes the themes in kafka’s own life. The museum it self resembles an existential nightmare. This is a must see if you in Prague and enjoy Kafka’s work.

Mainly centered on presenting Kafka’s background, giving a inside on how experiences (with his father, Prague, work, ilness, love) influenced his writing. Very creative approach to showcasing what things play role in his literature career. I really like the short films and phone, which you can answer. The only downside for me it’s its price, too high for its standards

Not worth the price. This is an exposition of facsimile and reproductions of old documents and pictures. A/c was off in warm weather, the lights were turned off 15 mins before closing time and we had to cut the tour short. Sure, there is a lot of information there and for Kafka fans it might be interesting, but paying to read texts behind glasses isn’t my thing.

Not a very large museum, but honestly for one person? It is already adequate for you to know about Franz Kafka. You can have completely no prior knowledge about him. The atmosphere is comfortable and appropriate. It also contains a lot of original, or maybe copies of handwritten files of Kafka's time. Not too many people there so you can enjoy your time.

Very nice museum at a great location. All you need to know about Franz Kafka is there. Decoration & atmosphere are made to suggest the stressful bureaucracy or the beyond understanding human environment. I had kind of trauma at my 18’s by reading The Castle. I got some answers during the visit and more questions then to be considered as a good session !

Neat museum about Franz Kafka - would recommend if you’re a fan of the writer / staying in Prague for awhile. Otherwise don’t think it’s as enjoyable without much initial interest and there are more renowned tourist destinations that are better use of time / money (entrance ~$10) Also home to the urinating sculpture fountains.

As a personal fan of Kafka I loved everything about this Museum. The price is fair, the souvenir shop awesome and the exhibition was marvelous. Every Kafka fan should visit this place, just be aware no pictures are allowed, but considering how chilling it is to experience this museum that's reasonable.

It was already closed when I got there so I only visited the store. The location is really nice and easy to find. There are so many books and souvenirs you can buy. A bit expensive tho. Not just Kafka’s but also Mucha’s. Really liked the statues in front of the building. So cool!

Absolutely recommend whenever you're a Kafka reader or not. Such interesting documents , publications and part of Kafka's personal life. Hoever, I cannot rate 5 stars as I agree with other reviews reporting that some documentation ain't original but just photocopies

Very nice museum. And the style and location is unique. Strongly recommended to visit it if you are in Prague . We have not bought tickets days before, we just went there and found no waiting time. But the right way may depend on when you plan to visit the museum

GREAT MUSEUM ABOUT KAFKA This museum has a lot of great information about Kafka from his birth to his death. There is also a great gift shop with many different items to choose from. The area around the museum is easy to walk and I enjoyed sitting near the river.

Franz Kafka'yı sevenler mutlaka uğramalı. Okumadıysanız ve bilmiyorsanız sıkıcı ve gereksiz bulunabilir. Charles Bridge den geçince sağa doğru 5 dakika yürüyerek ulaşılıyor. Kafkanın çocukluğunun geçtiği yerler, ailesi, kitaplarının orjinal yazıları v.b. güzeldi.

Gern wieder!

A must-see place for all people who, like me, love Kafkas writing. The museum is beautiful and offers a lot of information about his life and works. The tickets' price was a bit too high in my opinion though, so be aware of that.

It's a good museum, detailed information. I expected more information about the proces of Kafka writing his books though :/ for the rest it was a litlle bit on the smaller side, max 1,5 hour. Student price was €9.30 so it was nice.

A peek into the life od Kafka. You will find out everything you need to know about him and more. Down the street there is a bookstore where you can then buy and enjoy Kafka with a little more understanding.

Went there because I’m a fan of Kafka ♥️ It depicts Kafka’s life in a quite detailed way, that visitors can understand more about Kafka in terms of his personal relationship with Hermann, his lovers and work life. Although I’m not quite sure what the peeing statue has to do with the museum …

an informative tour with great explanation. nice artifacts connected through art, although some of the texts are hard to read because of the documents below, and overpriced for the length of visit time.

Wonderful experience, only thing that spoilt it was a collage party with an extremely noisy teacher. This museum is a place for reflection. Also geat cake and mulled wine in the restaurant.

  • Alice Russo

One of the best museums I have ever visited. Excellent information about every aspect of Kafka's life. It's extremely well-curated, everything you need is there but you need to work for it - don't expect to be visually stunned or have things handed to you on a platter.

  • Lucy Peake

A fascinating place to get a real insight into Kafka. Fantastically laid out and easy to follow along. The customer service was slightly cold, but I can't say this affected my experience too much. I would recommend if you have any interest in modern literature.

There are some interesting texts about Kafka's life and the letter to his father, but that's it. The museum is really small and the 10-20 minutes visit is definitely not worth the 300 czk unless you're a very devoted fan.

  • Annette B.

Sofistikovaný pokus o uchopení složitosti Kafkovy osobnosti a díla.
