The National Gallery of Canada is a must visit for art lovers, locals, and visitors to Ottawa. This beautiful 3 storey building has a nice collection of contemporary, Indigenous, Canadian and European art, housing pieces from well known artists like Monet, Van Gogh, Gauguin, and the Group of Seven in its permanent collection. The space is family-friendly, offers guided and auido tours, and activities for all ages. There is also a cafeteria, coffee shop, and restaurant on site for those who wish to spend the day here. The gallery is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm with the exception of Thursdays, where it is open until 8 pm. Admission is free for children 11 and under, Indigenous Peoples, and for all on Thursday evenings after 5 pm. It's recommended to book your free admission ticket online in advance to save time, but you can still get your ticket in person at the box office. Note that the free evenings excludes any special exhibitions. For those with a car, the gallery has an underground parking garage, or you can opt to park on the streets. The underground parking costs $2.75 per half-hour, up to a daily maximum of $14 (Members $12).

The gallery is not known for its collections of world arts, rather for Canadian and indigenous arts. Their European collection boasts mediocre pieces of masters such as Van Gogh, Cezane, Monet, Degas and etc. But the piece by Titian and the Third Class Carriage by Daumier are nice surprises. A couple of pieces by Picasso and Dali are nice to see too. Their shop has interesting merchandises featuring lovely totemic symbols by indigenous people. The maman sculpture at its entrance, the magnificent modern glass building with the unique long hallway leading to the atrium and the warm interior palettes of golden flooring, red and blue walls and well-appointed tall chambers more than meet the shortfall in its collections. However, the staff there are cold, no greetings at entrance, no smile at eye contact. And they are acting as if they were police and visitors potential trouble makers. A very odd and unfriendly atmosphere.

Visited with an out of town friend. $65 00 for 2 adults and one senior. It's a beautiful building and I was looking forward to seeing the huge Christmas tree in the atrium, not to be, why? Please explain. Don't think I will ever understand art. One large room had about 100 photographs of the same person with a slightly different pose! What a total waste of space. Don't get me started on the yellow and red stripe and the canvases where paint was just thrown at them a preschooler could do better and this rype of painting takes up so much wasted space! The chapel and choir music was superb, one speaker for each singer. The best painting of all was an old favourite shown below.

Probably the best museum in Ottawa, or at least a strong contender. Getting the opportunity to see the art work of the greats like van Gogh, Rembrandt, Botticelli, Tintoretto, Monet, Bernini, Picasso can be an overwhelming experience. Well connected with public transport, this museum is a must visit if you love art, culture, European Art Evolution, history. The structure of the building is eye catching too. However the sculpture of a giant spider in the front yard can be a bit quirky for some or can be a spot to click a selfie for some depending on their taste and preference. Tip~ Can be a bit pricy so if possible try to utilize the days when the entry is free.

Such a peaceful and gorgeous place to go and see art. The building itself is a work of art. The colonnade especially. I love the indigenous arts, the garden and the movement sections the best but all of the gallery is worth a visit. The art itself is breathtaking. The pieces are all thoughtfully well displayed to maximize the beauty of each one. It is clean, spacious and meticulously well kept. The collection is also an intriguing mix and I especially love all of the Canadian artists works' that are featured. Overall, it was definitely worth the visit. You can't beat the view from the Scotiabank great hall, either.

So much to see, including paintings and sculptures I had only previously seen in books. Plan for a whole day, They give you a sticker that gives in and out privileges so you can come up for air. I chose not to post some pictures because frankly I'm not sure about the rights. I chose 2 photos showing a restoration in progress, a Van Gogh (note the Vincent signature), a Matisse sculpture and a fun sign that could happen if the US installed Checkpoint Charlie on the Canadian border. Naturally it has to be bilingual.

We were limited by our schedule to an evening visit and attended the National Gallery on Thursday night when attendance was free after 5pm. We only visited the First floor and took in the Riopelle 100 Anniversary exhibit and the Canadian Art permanent exhibition. The latter is much more than just the Group of Seven. It is clearly worth the entry price on its own. Highlights included numerous Inuit pieces, Elizabeth Wood's sculpture, Lawrence's painting of his Superior visit, and several other outstanding works.

On the second day of my trip to Ottawa, I allocated three hours here, but it turned out to be far from enough. Just exploring first floor took me two hours. I suggest art enthusiasts reserve at least 6 hours for this place. Apart from the exhibits, the art museum itself is a masterpiece. Definitely worth revisiting. Take your time to savor it. I discovered an interesting detail – everyone tacitly placed stickers on the traffic light poles at the entrance, creating a humorous piece of art.

never gets old. i’ve been going to the art museum since i was very young, i recently went back for the first time in a few years and i had forgotten just how much i love being here. the art is beautiful, it all tells a story of a time that deserves to be celebrated and captured through art. the atmosphere is calming, the people are respectful and the downtown location is great for looking over the river. we bought our tickets at the door, it was $20/person but totally worth it.

I actually didn't visit the actual gallery, just the boutique. It was beautiful. Lots of little gifts and things. I purchased some bookmarks and a Canada maple leaf pin made from the copper of the original parliament buildings. It's a true piece of history. Beautiful building and a lovely spider monument out front called Maman meaning mom. The Tavern at the Gallery was closed but I would've liked to visit it.

This is the first ever art gallery I've been to. Was pretty cool. There is so much to take in, and I enjoyed it all. Both special exhibits are very interesting, and it was special to see some famous works in the permanent display. The cafe is a nice place to relax when you need a break. I was very impressed with the number of bathrooms throughout the space...not something I note most of the time. Easy to spend 5-7 hours here taking in everything.

Architecture & Interior - With it's high vaulted ceilings and glass windows, you immediately get a sense of a walking in. This gallery is pretty big. Housing all kinds exhibits, artworks, and collection. It was soothing to just walk around. Artworks/Exhibits/collections - There was all types of art when I was there. You get a taste of different styles, which I enjoyed. Service - The staff were all professional and friendly. Couldn't ask for more. Highly recommend to come if you are an Art Lover.

Visited on Thursday afternoon after 5pm (the admission is free on this day and time). The museum has a great collection of art from many different periods of time. There are a lot of rotating exhibits as well. The small hall that offers drinks and snacks has a great view of Parliament Hill, and plays contemporary music as well. The seasonal drink was delicious would definitely come here again!

An amazing place to visit. The atmosphere and exhibits were exceptional. The plethora of artwork was mesmerizing. There is a free coat check which was a really nice surprise. This is a must see when you're in the area. I highly recommend a visit here. Staff was friendly and gift shop was nice. They should have more stickers I could put on my laptop. Overall an outstanding experience.

It has an incredible and very diverse collection, it tells the artistic history of Canada, in a very well curated way, with divisions by styles and provinces and artists. it also has on the top floor galleries with artists from Europe such as Picasso, Monet, Van Gogh, Munch. tip: for those who are students, just present the proof card that pays the half price.

I would like to really recommend this place for people. First of all, you can look at the parliament building at good location. Secondly, this museum has a variety of art works. Especially,I really liked that this museum had a lot of paintings by famous artists, but not necessarily their most famous works. It made me realize that these artists had also created such paintings, and I really enjoyed being able to see their less well-known works.

  • Sherry Yuan

I love this museum, many great masterpieces collections you can find, Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet, William Tuner, Gustav Klimt etc. Especially one of huge size masterpieces of Klimt was on the shown borrowed from private collector, attracted attention but no camera was allowed. The giant spider statue at the front square is also interesting.

Nice place if one is intrested in art and painting. every Thursday after 5or 6pm until closing (8pm) the museum is free for anyone. there are three floors and keep enough time as it huge building with many painting and sculpture to even look quickly. it's a paradise to art admirers. parking is paid and the traffic is busy mostly due to the location. I would suggest to take transit or uber to have hassle free ride.

  • Stephen Sutton

Had a great time. Wonderful art and very nice galleries. Small quibble: not a good place for people with a fear of heights. The open concept design and the windows into the interior space give the illusion of sheer drops. Also, it would be nice if the gallery or other attractions in Ottawa were open at least a little longer than just 5 pm. It's kind of a trial to pack a full day when everything closed so early.

  • Sandra

Fun and very interesting place to visit. It's 60% filled with naked drawings, crazy right? I loved my short time there. If you are a student, you get a discount also, and it's just a 10-minute walk from the mall. I think if you come to Ottawa and want to go to the gallery, you should try this place first before others. Peace.

This gallery contains a diverse and impressive display of art. Definitely worth a visit if in the Ottawa area, and I would recommend prioritizing a visit here to any tourists. It has art from all over, not just Canadian art, and has pieces from many different time periods. I went on a Monday, and it wasn't crowded at all.

One of my favourites. Their classical collection is amazing (not posting the pics, but they have Gogh, Klimt, Monet among many more). I love checking out their seasonal collections too, always nice to learn about different movements. Thursday after 5 is free, I usually reserve it beforehand (can be done on the same day)

No audio guide or main pieces recommended. I asked the guy and he was very helpful. For someone that doesn’t understand much about art and was mostly accompanying my mum, need an explained path to follow on the museum to enjoy it. Most galleries in Europe have this… the chapel is amazing tho, great chorus!!

Absolutely gorgeous! It's a must go to places in Ottawa. If you have only a little amount of time to spend inside I'd suggest not to go at all. The paintings and other items are really beautiful and interesting to look at and you would need the entire day to properly go through e everything!

A visit to the Canada National Art Gallery is a must for anyone in Ottawa, whether you're a local or a tourist. It's a place where art, culture, and history converge, offering a truly enriching experience. I left feeling inspired and with a deeper appreciation for the beauty that human creativity can achieve. This gallery is a true gem in the heart of Canada's capital.

Very large museum with a surprisingly large collection of European masters. An excellent retrospective of the art scene in Canada. Architecture that I don't really like from the outside but that works very well on the inside, comfortable. Very recommendable

Great museum with lots to see. Lots of great Canadian history works as well as others. I wish I had more time when I went. We were there for about 2 hours and felt like we rushed through it. I would plan for at least 3 hours to see everything.

Beautiful art to view. The outside makes it seem more bigger than it is in terms of available art pieces. I enjoyed the Indigenous exhibit. My 8 year old enjoyed the experience. Coat check was available. There is a small cafe available for some food. Be sure to go under the spider outside and look at the detail.

  • Alex Bond

Cool art museum with lots of great pieces. It definitely felt like a maze inside and was tricky to ensure you'd visited every room. The highlight (spider) can be seen for free though, as it sits outside the gallery.

One of my favorite places in Ottawa, has great exhibits and even just going offers some truly beautiful views of Parliament Hill. Also the most affordable parking in the Byward Market area!

  • Max Abrams

A gem. Amazing curation with so many indigenous and new or less well known artists. The contemporary wing was world class. And the building is stunning.
