Tried for the first time last night, because Red Iguana and Chunga's were too crowded, so thought we'd try here, since we've thought about it, but just haven't stopped before now. It closes at 8pm, prob. because of transients around that area. No worries. They have tables inside, and you sit, to place your order, but pay at the cashier when you've eaten. They have an extensive menu. I got their Friday special, "Smothered Burrito," w/ chicken (you choose your meat) and frankly, it was delicious!—& Huge! Happiness! My husband got a steak Enchilada plate, and it was good too. They give you chips and salsa, and their salsa is spot-on-good. Their nachos are average—Next time we'll ask them to add black beans, which will make them perfect. Next time, we'll try their famous special. Didn't this time— we both just got what we know, but will explore more, next time. Yeah, we'll be back—any place that can make Chile Verde that good— WooHoo! Another Mexican food "thumbs up" to add to our list!

Going down hill. Stopped by Nicos today for lunch and ordered a carne asada burrito smothered with green chile verde, no rice no beans. What I got was a burrito with rice and beans that I specifically told then I didnt want and the burrito was smothered with about 3 cents worth of green verde sauce with no meat. When I brought up the issue to the guy at the counter he tried to tell me that the extra meat that they try to justify doubling the price with is inside the burrito which is complete nonsense. Anyone who has ever eaten at a mexican restaurant knows smothered means smothered with sauce and MEAT. So they doubled the price, from $7 to $14 by putting 3 cents worth of green chile verde then claiming the meat from the sauce was inside the burrito. I have eaten at Nicos for about 7 years and always had great food but when they try to rob their customers with obvious lies they lost me as a customer. Will never eat there again, ever. It was an obvious and blatant ripoff. The only thing smothered in this purchase was the $7 I got ripped off. Threw it in the garbage can and went to Taco Bell. To recap: A burrito is $7, a burrito with 3 cents worth of green chili verde with no meat is $14.

Do not come to this place. It's a hole in the wall, in surprised they are even open. They do not have AC we went just last weekend and it's super hot in there. They give you water but no ice. They give you chips and salsa the chips tasted stale. We ordered: Torta de carne asada Carne asada plate. 2 sopes de carne asada plate The torta (mexican sandwich) the bread was cold and stale and tasted old. The meat had no flavors and it was over cooked. The carne asada plate was super greasy and small portion for the price. The sopes were super greasy and tasted stale. The flour tortillas come from a bag, the corn tortillas are handmade. The food came out cold, too greasy, and the bread was stale. Would we come back here?? Absolutely not, and it's a bit overpriced for the 3 meals we paid 40.00 plus tip.... We didnt even take our leftovers because we were so grossed out by everything. Do not go to this place, you're better off at the taco stand. The people that rated this place a 5, should really venture out this place is farrrrr from "authentic".

I understand this is a designed hole in the wall eatery. But, that is no excuse not to clean your tables in between customers. Also please clean your window seals. I think you have the wrong waitress working for you unless it's family. I literally waited at the register for 15 minutes for someone to tell me to have a seat or give me some type of direction. I actually had to stop her and ask and she says oh I'll be with you in a minute. Once I was seated she still didn't come to me for another 20 minutes. I'm telling you this is only a five or six table restaurant. She could not multitask she could only do one task at a time. I understand why they have her on staff because she speaks English for the rest of the staff is Spanish speaking only. The food is not bad. So if you don't mind a dirty table, understand that you may not get seated or served for more than 30 minutes then this might be the place for you.

What a wonderful experience! Our daughter told us we had to try this restaurant so we did! It was delicious! My husband had the shrimp fajitas and they were excellent. The shrimp was fresh, juicy, tender, cooked to perfection as and the veggies had a slight delicious char! The rice and beans exceptional. I had the Wednesday specia a chili relleno, chicken enchilada, rice and beans. So yummy. I wish I had taken photos to add to the review. The food looked beautiful! Oh Yes, we asked a special favor, a small side of chili verde, As that is the one menu item always gage a Mexican restaurant by, A++ for sure. The owners and other employees, were so kind. We were amazed. The place is clean and cozy. We are going back for sure! Thank you so much for a wonderful meal and pleasant experience.

Stopped by not knowing anything about the place and not expecting much due to the neighborhood but inside was wonderful. Good AC, table cloth, nice service, inexpensive, and the food was sooooo delicious!!! It tasted like everything was made from scratch. I've never tasted such delicious chips and salsa! My daughter and I shared an order of nachos and couldn't even finish it all even though we came hungry so we both are for under $17 including the tip and drink (horchata). I wanted to write a review so I could remember the place to make sure I go back.

Tried this place because it was recommended. We arrived about 30 min before closing and were told we could only do takeout. We said we would be out be closing time. I tried the Enchiladas with Mole sauce and was delicious. Recommend trying. Others in our party tried the smothered burrito which all enjoyed. Quesadilla was so so. Small place might be considered a hole in the wall but worth a visit. I would eat here again. On arriving the front staff treated us less than ideally and left a bit of a bitter taste about the whole experience but we enjoyed the food nonetheless. Assuming the chef is Nico, did a great job with the food.

The portions are huge. The carne asada chimichanga was just ok. The quesadilla was good, very cheesy. The tacos dorados were ok too. My favorite thing out of everything we got was the chile verde on the chimichanga. I don't think I'd be back, mainly because the area is very sketchy, we made the mistake of eating outside, and we saw a couple guys fighting, and other things that made you be in the edge of your seat.

First of all, it's absolutely terrifying trying to eat anywhere on North Temple without risking your health, at the very least, or your life at worst. But this place shocked me. It was so small and unassuming, but once we were inside, the atmosphere was so comfortable you would have thought you were eating at auntie's house. The girl behind the counter was so friendly and attentive, I forgot I was eating at a restaurant. We had the carne asada plate with the cucumber lime agua fresca. So. Good. I was scraping the plate until the noise irritated the family next to us. Don't miss this little gem. Even if it is on North Temple.

It was my 1st time ordering to a Mexican food restaurant close to my job. I had also heard it was almost out of bussines last year so I wanted to support as well. I love Mole rojo so I ordered the Mole enchiladas and let me tell you that everything was very delicious. It is as authentic as my mother’s mole. Even the rice was red and cooked just right.I love love their Horchata!! I go here almost every Saturday and I have never been disappointed! I love how the owner is always very friendly and considerate;) I do recommend this place for Mexican food❤️It’s my number 1 Togo place!

I will say I enjoyed the food. Could have done without the attitude, from server. I said no chips no rice ( Dietary needs) Ordered the Wednesdays special: Spicy pork enchilada Chiles relleno Coffee & Side of chili Verde Side of Pico Was given the special with rice. So I asked for a plate to put rice on. The server trying to grab my plate. Told her no just the small plate. You never send food back to the kitchen! Had to ask for a refill on Coffee Big mistake. It was full of grounds. Never got my side of Pico. When paying, I asked her what I did to upset her. "I grab the hot plate"

We were staying at the KOA and, after reading great reviews, decided we needed to try Nico’s. We had the daily special: taco & enchilada (beef). The salsa and chips came out right away. The salsa had wonderful flavor; spicy but not too spicy. The chips were fresh. The enchilada was so good! The taco had flavorful meat, topped with onion & cilantro, which I love. (I warned my husband, since he is not a fan of cilantro ) Fast service, great food and very nice staff.

Mixed review. One the one hand the quality and flavor of the food was top notch. Delicious on every item. Excellent salsa good rice and beans etc. My wife got the enchiladas and chili releno she said it was fabulous. I got the chili Verde burrito plate and although it was very tasty there was almost no meat inside the burrito. For a $14 burrito with rice and beans it should have a generous amount of pork inside. Pork is cheap. Skimping on it does not look good. Nico, you're on the verge of having a great restaurant, don't ruin it like a lot of other places do by being stingy with the meat. Stingy portions have ruined many a good dream.

We had a delicious lunch at Nico’s. It is just a few steps from the Salt Lake City KOA. The food was very authentic and fresh. We had the Monday special for lunch with two tacos that also included rice, beans and a drink for $9.99. Chips and salsa are also included and they were very much above par. If a Nico’s were near where we live, I would be a frequent customer! They also have breakfast, but they don’t open until 10:00. Trying to think if this would fit with our travel plans.

Flew to SLC for a wedding and had to grab a bite after the flight. This was definitely the best we could have done! GREAT SERVICE and the food was just as good! We sat outside at a nice shady picnic table and enjoyed our chips and salsa. We had some picky vegetarians at our table and the server asked if we wanted anything else in the taco since we weren't getting meat and they brought out a new chef's creation, which was delicious! Everyone cleared their plates and was stuffed and satisfied! If we're ever back in town this will be the place to stop! Such nice people and great food!

Came tonight and it was some of the best Mexican food I’ve had in a long time! Their enchiladas were to die for with that mole. Their chips were so so yummy along with their salsa. We got their horchata which was sweet and had the perfect amount of spices. My husband got the chimichanga and he said it was great. This place feels like a diamond in the rough. Incredible food, service was great and everyone was so nice, and the prices were incredibly reasonable. I’ll be driving back here again

We love supporting small business. After Nico's went viral on tik tok and Instagram. We decided to go check them out! Easily the best enchiladas I've ever had! We were staying at Koa around corner and needed something fast to feed my 2 hungry preschoolers. The food was fantastic and ready quickly for take out. I worked at a high end Mexican restaurant several decades ago, so have a pretty good feeling on what is good quality And this restaurant definitely meets that expectation. I may have eaten a little too much guacamole :)

Great service and great food but portions were a little small. Had the steak fajitas and enjoyed them but thought they were overpriced for what you got. Ordered 3 additional tacos to fill up and they were quite good but, again, they were very tiny. This is not the place to go if you want to fill up on the cheap. I'll be back, though.

Greeted fast when I walked in. Lovely hostess grabbed a menu for me, but only one thing was on my mind. Quesadilla. Queso dia. I have been craving one for some time now. I had a $10 bill. It was $9.70 KOA Campground is right here. Hungry after a long drive to the ‘promised land’ of SLC? Why not stop by Nico’s Restaurant? I’m glad I did. Went for lunch... Food was alright. For the price point I was not excited about the result... Got a smothered burrito and not too impressed... 17 bucks for a smothered burrito plate with rice and beans and a horchata... But, that wasn't the biggest reason for the review... Waitress took my chips and salsa when my plate came out and the whole time I was there they played a infomercial to donate money to "holocaust forgotten jews"... Kind of a wild environment for lunch.

  • Robert Poythress

Food was reasonably good, (probably 3.5 stars), but we were disappointed that they only provide one small basket of chips and cup of salsa per order. We should have ordered separately. Also, their attitude was disappointing. . . We ate outside and i took our straw wrappers in so they wouldn’t blow away while we waited for our food, and i was told “we don’t have a garbage can”. Really?!?!

Nicos is an awesome family restaurant! They have delicious food and great customer service! I ordered my food and got my bag! I went home and realized that I had not received all my food! I came back to the restaurant and told them I didn’t get my food! They were very kind and quickly made it up and even gave me extra food! The portions are generous and the food is delicious! Be careful with the chipotle hot sauce! It is spicy yet flavorful!

  • Maddie Minchola

This is by far the best authentic little Mexican restaurant I've had in a long time. Like everyone else I saw the TikTok video the owner's son posted and I absolutely had to come down and try it. I order the Barbacoa and my husband had the Chimichanga, it did not disappoint. The waitress was very nice and atentative we got the food quick and left with our bellies full. I'm definitely coming back and determine to try everything on the menu.

  • Markus

Was staying at the KOA next door and ate lunch here. Where I live there are a lot of Mexican restaurants and this beats them all. Its a small hole in the wall but the food is good and comes as big portions. The steak taco had tender steak and was very good. The chimichanga was good if not fried enough. Would definitely return

I ordered two breakfast burritos with steak and bacon. Now, these were very, very average. The texture of the tortillas was like a week old bundle of store bought tortillas after they've sat open in your refrigerator and hardened themselves as they've grown old with stoicism over "the war..." However, I have heard wonderful things about Nico's. I am exicted to try them again. I'll update this review with their lunch and dinner!

When saw on the news that this place was about to close, I didn’t get a chance to go until recently. Food was good, it got busy and unfortunately the guy was running the front on his own and wasn’t able to check on his tables and it was understandable. Tiny little restaurant with quick service and great food. The hidden gem, that sets this eatery above other Mexican restaurants that I have eaten at, is the salsa that is made specifically by the owner ( a very sweet lady!)! Got the barbacoa de borrego and was not disappointed! The lamb in the tacos was great, and the soup was scrumptious as well, with chickpeas (maybe a little hominy?), something which I thought was yuca, and a delicious lamby-chipotley taste. It was under $13 with tax, and quite filling!

Food so fresh it brings images of the California coast to mind. Fresh fish from a taco truck next to a beach with waves coming in come to mind. Highway PCH or US 101. I’ll be back.
