I have a soft spot in my heart for co-op grocery stores. I like the model and dig the hippie vibe. But mostly I like places where food sourcing is placed high on the list of determining what is being sold. Hands-down my favorite aspect of Other Avenues is the bulk foods selection. All of your nuts, flours, granolas, and snacks and you can buy however much you'd like. This isn't Rainbow Grocery in terms of breadth, but it is more than you can want for a local grocery trip. They have a great beauty selection for natural products as well in terms of non-edibles. The staff is friendly, but vary a bit in terms of customer service. If you're out in the avenues go and check it out--in some sense they have cornered the market out here for organic and natural groceries. The prices remain reasonable despite their location monopoly.

Great place to shop! Very friendly staff, lots of good wholesome food, mostly organic, many bulk items, high quality, local produce! T-Th 10% senior discount, also discount card available. A block and a half from the 43rd Avenue N Judah stop, 2 blocks from the 18 46th Avenue stop at Judah. Great variety and value, fair trade coffee, chocolate. Gift items, kids toys, microbrewery beers, excellent affordable wines, milk in glass bottles, cage free organic eggs, frozen foods, canned foods, juices, supplements, soap, toothpaste, sox, crackers, cookies, chips, bread, bulk tea and herbs/spices--tremendous selection, all organic! Everything you need for a first class vegetarian diet! Bring your own bags and containers and save money! Best place to shop west of Twin Peaks!

This is the store where you can find an excellent food for vegetarians. For instance, the organic raw buckwheat is sold here. It has 6g of protein. Even though this store's products are relatively expensive, there are a lot of things they do that make it worth to shop. For example, there is a 5% senior discount for shoppers aged 60 and over. Also, according to their website, this store supports many charitable organizations such as the Center for Farmworker Families, Farm Sanctuary, and Natural Resource Defense Council to name a few. I think, it always feels good whenever you overpaid for something, a portion of that money eventually will be donated to charity. Finally, this store is well maintained and the employees are very helpful. Recommend!

Love how convenient this grocery store is! It's all vegetarian, and carries lots of food from local providers around the Bay, like Rosalind Bakery and Timeless Coffee. Love the huge vegan selection, and the 5 dollar grab bags of fruits and veggies they have on occasion - in addition to the huge selection of vegan chocolate and ice cream. They also have dry bins with flour, oatmeal, spices, etc. You can weigh out exact quantities of things you need and pay for them by the pound, which is super convenient for obsure, one-off ingredients. You should bring your own containers for this if possible. They sell a membership that gives you 5 percent off, and I use mine quite a bit ;)

If you love Rainbow, think of pouring water on it and running it through the dryer on extra hot: You'll end up with the much smaller but similarly stocked health food collective/cooperative. You won't find all the alternatives you find at Rainbow, but you will likely find everything you need (come on, is your favorite brand of cereal REALLY that much better than another similar brand?). Produce is fresh. Bulk goods are plentiful. Be prepared to squeeze around folks as you shop, especially if you are there at a busy time, but it's worth the squeeze. Amazing jewel in the Outer Sunset.

My favorite neighborhood grocery store. Love to support somewhere owned by employees. Yes, it is pricey, but they sell good stuff. Great for (spendy) delicious groceries or for picking up treats on your way to a beach picnic. Small but solid selection of bulk items, local crafts and cuisines, to-go meals, baked goods, and more. Insider tip: on some evenings they have the BEST huge bags of produce for $5. Employees and shoppers are the best kind of people. Love my co-op.

I usually have a good experience at this store, some of the people that have been there for some time are very nice, But a lot of the new people working there are so cold and rude, I'm not expecting very friendly people at this point, just don't be impolite, it's extremely unprofessional not look at the costumer when we are paying for expensive food, I understand you don't want to be there, but a little friendliness might help you.

  • Shannan Leitner

Always super friendly staff and they have just about everything I could ever want and more! (earthy clothes, personal care, bulk goods, produce, fresh baked goods, tons of yummy chocolate options, etc.) So lovely to have this cute little grocery store all the way out by the beach, I dont know what I would do without it. Even if you don't live near Other Avenues it is a must visit. Forever love this place :)

I'd never been here before this visit. I did a search for co-ops near me and this was one, offerred. Curious, I popped in. Yum, they had fresh vegan donuts and other vegan offerings. They may consider having a salad bar or some kind of on-site vegan deli offerrings like what The Butcher's Son in Berkeley offers. Cute little store. It reminded me a bit of the older Good Earth Store in Fairfax, CA. Cozy.

  • Sharon Profis

Just the best. These guys have every bulk item you can think of — even items like baking powder! The staff is kind and always willing to help find (or order!) food items. The produce is extremely high quality and they’ve even started working with a local farm in San Francisco to package microgreens that last for DAYS. Finally, their worst kept secret is the dried mango — it’s insane. ❤️

  • Ron Allen

Finally, I found a good organic market. They have a wide range of natural and organic products. They have some fun gifts too. You do have to pay more for clean food but it is worth it. I did notice one of their lines of organic eggs was the same price as safeway. They do what they can to keep prices down. They also offer some discounts for senoirs and a few others. I like them.

  • Mike Aldax

If a butcher was located next door to Other Avenues, we may never need to visit a traditional supermarket again. They have everything one needs, sans meat products. Nice folks work there too. Beer selection is unreal. I probably annoy fellow customers when I examine the selection for too long. Interesting wine selection as well. Get your red card for discounts.

  • Shelly Puri

Excellent grocery shop with an assortment of eclectic finds, especially when it comes to vegan, glutenfree, etc. The prices are reasonable considering and many times quite less than Whole Foods Market. Incredibly helpful staff and nice overall vibe; they also have an option to become a member for extra savings, for more frequent shoppers. Define recommend.

  • Andrew Stock

Living close by Other Avenues is fortunate. The workers have an ownership stake, and is a model for small grocery stores to co-op. The selection is good, fresh produce and fresh bread from a local baker. Very predictable over the 10 years I have been shopping there. I’m happy to support them even if the prices are a bit higher than the large chain stores.

  • Lindsay Williamson

In town visiting and we came here daily for apples, bananas, plums and snacks for our daily adventures. The bulk section was amazing for snacks for the day or a little dessert at night. Gluten free vegan pumpkin muffin was AMAZING. Wished we were here longer to try their bulk teas and more bakery items! Wonderful selection of foods and drinks!

  • Kyle Slaugh

This place is ridiculously overpriced, the employees are rude, and they refused to service this older gentleman I saw shopping in there for no reason, even though I've seen him shopping there before (that nice old guy has lived in the sunset for 30 years!). This place is just downright horrible and they are a disgrace to co-ops everywhere.

  • S W

Well managed small store with lot of stuff. It's like a mini whole earth store with interesting selection of products. Prices are reasonable, and staffs are very friendly. They even have jars of sauces from Peru, not that I recommended those. The store has good vibe that you can feel the care and love from people work there.

  • David Williamson

We were in town for a few nights and were grateful that Other Avenues was so close by. Their values and mission around food are awesome and really resonated with us. We bought items from the bulk section numerous times, as well as some delicious gluten free baked goods and fruit. Really great options and very friendly staff.

  • Mark Leeds

Wow, this is a great little grocery store. The produce is top notch. They have nearly everything you need. If you are staying locally and walking, 7-11 down the street can supplement your needs for common items. Otherwise, Other Avenues is the place to go if you are making a salad or looking for delicious, healthy fruit.

  • Roman Jacopi

I get a lot of my health food products and supplements here. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I feel only a few people in there really know what they're talking about and the rest are just new it seems..ha.. everything is great quality and I always find something here that makes me feel better in the long run..

  • Nadia Rouis

Small coop health food store (worker owned). The only one in its neighborhood, making locals grateful to find organic food whiteout driving miles. Good choice of local fresh fruits and veg and amazingly large selection of teas and spices. Check the nearby vegan café Judahlicious, just a few doors up the street.

  • Jake

Near and dear to my heart, they have a pretty good beer selection and a surprising wine selection. Otherwise, it’s kind of crunchy granola for rich techy yuppies with too much money and not enough personality. They’ve got some neat trinkets and choice organic, all-natural, cruelty free yada-yada...

  • Mary Margaret

I've never eaten healthier since moving to the Outer Sunset. Other Avenues has the variety and freshness that I look for. The staff is laid back yet knowledgeable and helpful. And considering the quality, I find the prices quite reasonable. And best of all, I get to support a worker owned co-op!

  • Yumi Takahashi

I love this little store that stocks so many healthy and specialty products that I can easily pick up without my having to drive across town, as I live nearby. I never expected to find so many interesting items here, and the staff couldn't be friendlier and so helpful! …

  • Vernon Sanders

5 stars for the awesomeness of this co-op for staying in business so many years. For a store their size they keep a good selection of groceries. I appreciate being able to get foods that meet my dietary restrictions that's in my neighborhood and committed to worker owners.

  • Ilan Erenstein

This is a hidden little gem in the heart of San Francisco. They have all the essentials. Milk, eggs, fruits, bread. Everything is organic and the staff owns part of the store so everyone is super cool. They don't have a huge selection but it's good in a pinch.

  • Andrew “Drew” M

For implants only, you'll be followed around and treated like you're stealing if you have any color on your skin. Every visit for us they treated us like we didn't belong... highly recommend Gus's down the street! Way better prices and service is outstanding.

  • Steven Hanna

Great variety of natural, organic, and local foods and sundries. They have a good selection with reasonable prices. The staff there are knowledgeable, helpful and courteous. Excellent customer service! (Remember when that wasn’t as hard to find as a unicorn!)

  • Lisa Garmat A Cause For Adventure

Great local grocery store with super friendly staff. The produce is all organic and I got the most delicious hard-to-find organic corn here the other day. Parking is all metered on the street. This is a great spot for inexpensive groceries in the city.

  • Gary Eser

Coop...helpful And friendly staff...also sell ecological friendly cleaners, vitamins and supplements, cute pins...can buy aloe fonds....plentiful herb and spices in old timey acpothecary jars...try the muhara (spelling?)walnut spread..love this place

  • Bryanne Saugez

Cute and small version of Rainbow. We were delighted when we went there and will definitely be going back. Some bulk, lots of supplements, some ready to eat meals and a small produce section along with most other things are available here.

  • asiia mansurova

Really nice grocery store with little fancy cool things and all essentials. Stuff is extremely friendly and being there made me feel really good :-) wish I had this place in my neighborhood! Definitely a little hidden gem …

  • Nikita Khetan

The neatest little grocery store in all of SF, I dare say! An incredible kind and helpful staff, and an amazing selection of ingredients, fresh produce, ready-made foods, bulk items, and toiletries. I absolutely love the spot.

  • Anton Korniyenko

This place is a jewel of sunset. It looks so small but it has choice that will startle you, puzzle you and think how is it possible to be able to have so much cool, local, unique, artisan, unbelievable stuff in one place!

  • Lydia Thornton

Other Avenues has inspired me to enjoy a much healthier diet. Their thoughtfully selected produce and cheeses have helped me find just the right balance of veggies and healthy fats. This co-op is a really special place.

  • att Isevil

cheese monger laylah, versus "i don't eat cheese ..." and the constant problems of the idiots who live in fear, and then there is the hang up. so for all the I love the service, self-delusion is alive and well.

  • Douglas Gardali

For the most part, it is a good go-to places. Attitudes can very much take play so ignore the ones that apparently seem to hate men. Life is so short so wake up and look at real beauty as a real persons will.

  • Clif Duhn

I love their bulk section! It's great to fill up on so much stuff (grains, pasta, beans, snacks of all kinds, seasonings), and not need to use a single plastic bag. Staff is helpful and friendly as well.

  • Alpha Boötis

Packed tight of unique bulk and other items nestled not far from oceanfront. Street parking was available. Like the cooperative concept. This is how it's instituted long ago. Worker-owned.

  • Dyanna Volek

Long-standing co-op in the Outer Sunset. We’re very lucky to have this fresh produce grocery store in the neighborhood. Worker-owned and run with intention. The beer lineup is FIRE.

  • Nick McKissick

Employee own and operated for a very long time! Fun market to walk around in and look for more than just groceries! From Tarot cards to a real fun beer & wine collection!

  • Eric Mar

One of the last remaining coops (cooperative , collectively-owned businesses) in the nation. Great staff and selection of organic and local food and household products!

  • Anna Chan

The people there were very helpful in finding the products I needed. Great variety of selections on tons of products from incense, candles, lotions and potions.

  • Florika Bozionelos

Very friendly staff & excellent selection of natural & organic foods. Lots of educational and nurturing gifts, especially candles, baby products and books.

  • Joey D

I really enjoyed shopping here! Quality selection of groceries, snacks, wine, beer & health/beauty items. Great place to stop before hitting the beach.

  • frank bachorski

For a small coop they sure have every need covered. And the staff is very helpful. Bulk items are priced so low you can really stock up your pantry.

  • Anatoly Volokh

Most wonderful selection of organic products and produce, one of the favorites. Also like their Nana Joe's oatmeal in bulk, though a bit pricey

  • James Gomez

Great co-op with a wide variety of goods. All the produce looks awesome. Good alcohol selections. A bit expensive but worth it for the quality

  • MrJimthegrim

What can I say other than it's just a great organic grocery. Impressive selection for it's size and should have more than whatever you need.

  • Nataraj J

Probably the best place to shop organic local food. Everything here is amazing and the people here are happy to help.

A treasure of the Sunset, this is a worker owned cooperative. The staff and goods are like a mini Rainbow Grocery.

Good selection of high quality foods, though finding chocolate chip cookies with wheat and butter is a challenge!

A bit pricier than rainbow, and with a smaller selection....but easier to get to if you live out by the beach.
