The selection you will find at this store is unique, and it's proximity to the adjacent coffee shop. It was always fun casually browsing through and picking up items you can't find elsewhere. I've made many purchases over the years, and brought my kid along to foster some interest. In those days the staff was generally friendly and helpful. Recently, I was in the market for a folding bike. I knew this place of all places would have the exact selection I was looking for. I don't like ordering online for expensive purchases like this. Now, I understand COVID 19 rules put some limits on things, but their store policy is a bit draconian, and I was vaccinated the last time I visited. They have this elaborate booth at the front door now, and they only let "one" customer in the store at a time. The person in the shop directed me to the website to create a sales appointment, with a bit of a disinterested attitude. I don't know why that couldn't be handled right then and there. While this conversation happened, some other guy was standing off to the side messing around on his phone. I don't know if he was waiting or what... I went to my car out of respect for their policy, and to try to navigate the website. I couldn't find the appointment link. I called in, and got the same disinterested person from the booth. I could find their phone number from the site, but I could not for the life of me find the elusive appointment link. The link is buried in a wordy blog notification to customers, as a hyper link that says "HERE" somewhere in the wall of text that strings out vertically on your phone. I called in, they literally said, check the website. Yes, that's why I called. I couldn't find what they were talking about on their website from my phone. They rephrased their previous statement in a different way... nope not getting it. By this point I had enough, and told them that. They said type in the url/appointments... which is reasonable, but who wants to deal with disinterested sales people for an expensive purchase. Not me. Well, their loss. I didn't get a Brampton, but I got a decent quality folding bike from a friendly and responsive dealer. Now, after reading some key negative reviews, and poorly chosen responses from the owner, I will never come back. Granted, there are some people in uptown with out of whack expectations, but there is no reason to carry that over to other customers. They sell premium priced stuff. One would expect a classy demeanor to go with it. Exclusive products can't excuse a bad attitude. It is a real bummer.

My order for a wheel hub was cancelled on grounds that there was a glitch in the online system on the website and the price listed was incorrect (was too good to be true). Rather than owning up to the mistake on their part, my order was straight up cancelled. I was relying on delivery of this order for my bike build and had ordered other components as well which are now useless without the hub. Please think twice before placing an order with Perennial especially for items that seem to be listed at a great value. I understand they run a business but leaving a potential customer high and dry without any recompense (especially when the business is at fault) is not what customer centric businesses do. ***UPDATE (Apr 30th for Luke)*** Thank you Luke for responding to my post. I really appreciate the fact that you are actively engaging with happy and unsatisfied customers alike. I usually don’t post reviews on Google but after I saw the other reviews and your efforts, I thought you might take notice of my review. Unfortunately, someone on your team misinformed you that the product I saw bought was showing to be 550 USD. If that were the case I wouldn’t have even put it in my cart. I do not appreciate the fact that you implied ill-intent on my part without verifying the facts. I saw the base price as being 0.00 and added components to see if the package price changed (which it did), I never saw the 550USD that you stated. I checked out with 24USD as the total for the order which I also verified with your representative Lee over email. I encourage you to get the facts verified please. I don’t have anything to gain from this post. I also don’t expect or want the item for free either. I just hope that this post can serve as some sort of feedback to improve the already very good reputation of your store and also help prevent similar potential 1-star reviews in the future. Nearly 20 years of doing business with this shop, and I'm still negatively impressed. I'll get what I need somewhere else... To add more detail... years ago, I had them custom build a 16" front wheel for my Haluzak. They called to tell me it was built and I could pick it up. Not only was it NOT done, they laughed about wasting my time, and yes - Luke was there laughing as well. I was having them replace a weak rim with a more robust rim. They had simply cut the original $60 rim off the wheel. The rim they destroyed was almost new (50 miles), and I had planned to re-sell it. Waste of time & money. Yeah, it was a real belly-laugh . Another incident: years later, I decided to sell the Haluzak to a guy in San Francisco. He wanted it shipped through Perennial. When I was dropping the bike off to be packed & shipped, a tech walked up to the (condescending) sales rep I was working with and started talking to her about something else. Mind you, no "pardon my interruption". They both turned around and walked away. Totally rude. Total lack of interpersonal sales skills. 'Just two episodes out of many. Several years ago, it got to the point that the only thing I would buy there was tires & tubes, but they messed up on that one too - sold me tubes that were too small for the tires that were purchased at the same time. All the tubes suffered catastrophic failure within 2 weeks - no road-patch is going to fix a 6-inch blow out. Rudeness and a general lack of basic intelligence are pervasive among the staff. From the lowest clerk to the owner. The ICE Trike specialist is a supercilious know-it-all. I'll never do business here - for anything, and will pay more if necessary. Love it or hate it. There seems to be nothing in between with this shop. I have friends and acquaintances who have also had negative experiences here - it's not just my unique experience.

I have visited this store twice. Once on Monday 3/8/2021 and once on Friday 3/19/2021. The first experience was fantastic. The mechanic was polite, friendly, and most importantly knowledgeable and provided a quality fix. I called that afternoon for a brake adjust and told to come over now. He took my bike into the shop and did a proper brake adjust. In fact, it’s one of the best brake adjustments I’ve received on this bike. Hats off to you. I wish all the shop employees were your caliber. My second experience today was very different. I called the shop and asked if a brake adjust and derailer adjust. Once again, I was told, “sure come on in.” over the phone. Once I arrived the issues started. The demeanor of my mechanic was hostile and passive aggressive. He looked at my bike, did a few adjustments in the parking lot and told me I needed new parts. No problem, how much and how long, I asked. Three weeks and $100. Great, sign me up. Can I take my bike and bring back? NO, NO, NO. I asked why and was oddly told to look at the back wall of the building and describe what I see. I didn’t understand and he said this is a small shop and we can’t store bikes forever and furthermore was told my bike was just an online bike. I said, hey I don’t want to store my bike, I want to ride it (still ridable) and bring it back when it’s my turn for a repair. He again said, NO, NO, NO. I told him he’s not making logical sense. I asked if the issue was people say they’ll come back but never do and offered to prepay. Again, NO, NO, NO. I will not return to a shop where you treat me like a customer who does not matter. I read your Google reviews and this appears to be a trend with this shop and the owner. Too bad, the shop is a few blocks away. My recommendation is – think twice before using this shop.

I bought a bike here! tis my first foray into cargo biking and after a bit under a year of ponderous research i made my picks on manufacturer, model, accessories and all the whatnot. was going to order direct from the manufacturer but after some deliberation decided i wanted to take ownership sooner and not have to worry about assembling myself on this first go round. so i just googled up a place nearby and landed on perennial and boy am i glad i did. they had the bike tuned up and ready to go with the child seat, running boards, and bread basket all attached. i called ahead to be sure itd be ready when i was going to get it and was told itd be good to go in half an hour and then when i showed up it was! amazing. the shop owner luke came out and said hi which was perdy cool and i talked to an older gentleman in the parking lot who said he had been buying bikes from luke for something like fifteen years. all good things to hear. so then i plopped my two year old in the back seat, cinched up the straps and rode the thing the 8 miles home straight out of the shop with no problems whatsoever. simply fantastic. i would and will recommend perennial to anyone interested in getting out and enjoying life on a bicycle and you know you want to be out biking after being quarantined all winter. just do it. call em up. order online. whatever yer preference. just dont show up and expect to peruse the aisles whilst making a decision because they respect their employees and customers enough to ask that you shop ahead. man that was a long review. ha. seriously though... awesome spot. i will be going back for sure

I would AVOID Perennial Cycle at all cost. I say so because I do not believe they stand by their products. Perennial Cycle is the type of business that relies on a large number of new customers to keep their business going. If you ever need them to support your after you bought a bike, things will be very different. Everything seems fine until there’s something wrong with your bike. They sold me a rear rack in wrong size when I bought my brand new bike three years ago. Later I tried to install a fender. I found out that the rack is for a smaller size wheel that would not allow enough clearance for the fender. All of the above mentioned parts are from the same manufacturer Linus, including the bicycle itself. So I stopped by and spoke to the owner. The owner thought I was ridiculous to even bring it up. He told me it is simply too long for them to do anything. However from a customer’s perspective, I believe it is wrong for any business like Perennial Cycle who often prides itself as a local neighborhood business to sell and install the wrong part and refuse to correct their mistake. Because it's taken too long for their customer to spot their mistake. I admit I was too slow to spot the faulty part. In fact I would probably never find out if I wasn't trying to install a fender. However I trusted Perennial Cycle’s decency and ethics for dealing customers with honesty. I also don’t think three years is too long for them to swap the wrong rack for a new one, the correct one size that I paid for.

I love this shop for a variety of reasons! They built me a bike this past spring that is absolutely beautiful and fits my life to a tee. I’ve also rented Brompton bicycles from them on numerous occasions (try one, you'll love it) and I was privy to my dad’s purchase of a folding electric bike. All of these experiences have been stellar, from end to end to end. Especial shout-outs to owner Luke, as well as Martha and Karl. Brilliant biking souls. I especially admire that Perennial changed their name (from Calhoun Cycle) to respect the movement away from honoring John C. Calhoun. They were the first CARAG business (as far as I know) to make the move to do this. That signals that this is a bike shop that values social justice and appreciates the power that words have. I love their new name. I haven’t even mentioned that, every April, as part of 30 Days of Biking, Perennial Cycle organizes weekly pastry rides that regularly get dozens of participants. If you join these inclusive and friendly rides, you'll bike somewhere secret with the crowd and get a free pastry (courtesy of the shop) for your efforts. How cool is that?! Give this shop your business, buddies. You’ll always feel good at Perennial.

Perennial Cycle Minneapolis If anyone could sell ICE to eskimos, it would be this Bike shop! I started biking in the 1950s with one gear, then 10, then 18, a Mountain bike, a tandem and an Ebike! I have been in a few bike shops! But when it was time to buy an Etrike for my wife. We had many, many, questions??? First visit to Perennial Cycle we spent a hour or so talking to Hunter the bike mechanic. He was a tremendous help, knew the product and answered all our question! He even took the ICE trike, made one simple fold and put it into our Jeep! We were surprised, pleased and sold! Second visit, to pick up the ICE trike. Luke the owner spent a couple hours with us. He made sure the ICE was adjusted to my wife, answered a few more questions and even took time to show me how to load the trike! To say we were impressed with the ICE, the shop and the people wouldn’t cover it! Great prices, Amazing staff, Speedy service. You might be treated like less of a human by the owner of the shop but at least your bike will be fixed in no time. I’d say it was worth the terrible costumer service when I was in a bind. Will I be coming back to buy any accessories? not a chance, do I appreciate the help when I was in a pickle with a blown out tire of course. If I wouldn’t have talked to the owner at all I think my visit would have been spectacular and I would have left feeling great. (Edit) After looking at reviews I can see that this isn’t anything new. Why do you treat some people like this? I was in need of help and I felt like a burden to you and your team. I needed new handle bar grips, new breaks, a water bottle holder a phone holder a helmet. But after speaking with you for 5 minutes I knew I needed to take my business somewhere that would actually appreciate it.

I had a great experience buying bicycles here a few years ago. Today I stopped by to get some help installing monkey bars on my Yuba Mundo. I had a relatively simple problem to fix that was just a bit beyond my confidence level. The mechanic refused to talk to me about my problem unless the bike was in the shop. I live 25 minutes away and was hauling around a 2.5 year old. Rather than putting the customer first, the mechanic was rude and refused to talk to me about my install. I returned an hour and a half or so later with the bike. It took 5 minutes AND he still gave me bad advice. He wasted an hour and a half of my day to save himself 10 minutes. I'm pretty sure this is the last time I'm shopping here. I'll likely head over to the Hub next time.

The most reliable work in the city. This is where you get your wheels built. Especially if Karl is building them. The most knowledgeable mechanics in the city. Yes, you pay a little more, and there's an air of upper-middle class attitudes from staff and their typical customer, but they'll take care of you. Imagine NPR hosts will eventually break the silence and greet you a little too long after the door has closed behind you. This is the bike shop I grew into once I had a career and could afford it. HOWEVER, their mechanics always offer me a budget option next to the best option if there's one available. I really dig that. Their winter maintenance program is just the best. They maintain your bike through the winter for one reasonable fee.

Terrible experience. We arranged an out-of-state visit to have my Faraday bike serviced and a recall item replaced, since we don’t have a dealer in our own state. They insisted they only needed a few hours to do the tune-up and installation, but we made arrangements with the owner, Luke, to leave the bike for about a week while we did a Boundary Waters trip. When we arrived back at the shop a week later, the bike had not been touched. The tech immediately started to replace the recall item in front of us. We asked if the tune-up had been completed. He lied to us and told us it had been done and when we turned our backs, we caught him greasing the chain. What a terrible waste of our time. Don’t waste your time with this bike shop.

I was so excited about this place because I just moved to the neighborhood and this bike store is in walking distance from my house. I had bought a bike pump for around $50 and was going to buy a pedal wrench for $12-$14 but they were sold out of pedal wrenches. I asked the mechanic if I could borrow his and quickly tighten up my pedals, I was standing there with my bike in hand. He wouldn't let me use his wrench and said it would cost $5 for him to do it for me. After explaining I had just bought a $50 pump and the nice guy at the counter said it wouldn't be a problem the mechanic told me to go somewhere else. Good store, greedy mechanic with a big head. I'll probably buy tubes there for convince but boycott it otherwise.

Carl and Hunter are the best! I'm traveling around the world on a trike recumbent and I've been to many bike shops in the 5 years I've been on the road but Perennial Cycle is the first shop that has fixed all my problems: Rohloff hub very hard to shift, and front end pull fixed with an old inner tube that I can fine tune on the road, besides new brake pads and rotors, and scrubbing stuff that wasn't working well sue to road grime. They found things, showed me it needed replacing so I could concur. Trike is humming and I'm a happy triker! That's not always the case when I leave a bike shop. These guys know what they're doing and I really appreciated dealing with them!!

I live a few hours outside of Minneapolis and 90 minutes round trip (by car) from nearby bike shops who usually have to special order parts I need anyway. I was in Uptown last week and decided to swing by and see if they had studded winter tires. I got a set of Schwalbe Winter 700c tires and some Planet Bike SpeedEZ fenders and got them cheaper than Amazon's best price and I'm a prime member. The customer service was top notch and It is a great store. I found my new goto bike shop when I don't need the part overnight. Hope I can buy one of those sweet Carradice tweed bike bags I saw in the store (maybe Santa will surprise me). Cool, helpful staff. Highly recommend.

Called earlier for needing to get a Ebike tyre fixed - I was extremely excited as the person over the phone was impeccable. Polite and courteous and told me that they could get the tyre fixed impromptu. The moment i arrived the first interaction i had with - whom i can assume was either the manager or owner. I was treated poorly and left with a fixed bike but a confusing level of respect to a paying customer. I was asking about other services they do E.G brakes being fixed etc and was met with absolutely not. I should be happy my bike is fixed but instead feel a little jaded at the interaction from the manager in the shop.

This store is passionate about helping people find the right cargo bike for their family (even if it means sending you to a competitor). My family was looking for a very specific style of cargo bike. So specific we couldn't find anything close on the internet. We talked with Keith and Luke at Perennial Cycle. They gave me some ideas of what they had in stock, explained where it did and didn't meet my criteria, and offered to make some contacts to other bike shops in the area that might be a better match. Super impressed with the service. They're really focused on the person and the purpose. Highly recommend.

I recently had some work done on an old Raleigh 20 folding bike. I needed to replace the old cottered crankset with a modern sealed bearing bottom bracket and new crank arms. The old crank arms were bent and the bottom bracket shell had a non standard threading and non standard shell width. Another shop I spoke to in town did not have the expertise to do the job. Karl the mechanic (who I've learned is one of the top bike mechanics in town) and was able to mill down the bottom bracket shell and re-thread the bottom bracket. I was very happy with the work that was done and would go back in the future.

My friends bought me a recumbent tricycle to cheer me up after my neurodegenerative disorder prevented me from riding a two-wheeler. It was a lovely thought. The problem is that it didn't fit me. They bought it off of Craigslist so there was no returning it. They paid $1,000 for it. Super-hero Bike Tech Luke came to the rescue! He was able to cut the frame and shorten the chain that same day. In addition, he made some modifications which allowed the trike to pedal with less effort. I have never received such excellent service at any retail establishment! I got more than my money's worth!

This is the bicycle shop to go to! The customer service is second to none and the service shop is top notch. I desperately needed the bottom bracket replaced on my vintage Raleigh. I use my bike for work daily so it was crucial that I had it back the same day. Not only could they accommodate but they had the bike done in an hour and a half. The old Raleigh runs like a dream now. They didn't even give me any guff for all the Jimmy rigs on the bike and the loctite I had used as a bandaid to keep her rolling before the repair. Can't thank them enough for a speedy and perfectly done repair.

I came to perennial because they have worked on a hand cycle of mine in the past. This time around I inquired about brake maintenance on a Mountain Trike, a lever drive wheelchair made from bicycle components. After receiving a hard no, I explained the parts are common hydraulic mtb components, without any consideration our conversation ended and I expressed I will be taking my business elsewhere. If your business advertises working with recumbents and hand cycles, I implore you to open your mind to alternative equipment. Not all 'bikes' look the same. You already know this.

Kudos for the new name change! I come to this shop for whiz kid mechanic Karl's knowledge, passion, skill, and attention to detail. To be honest I intend to follow that guy to any shop he goes to. I read previous reviews and it's a shame they had some troubles about 8 months+ or so ago. I can say with confidence in my experiences with Karl that even if he's not the one working on your bike, he's going to bring a lot of good to that shop! Other mechanics I know there are also very skilled and kind. The folks at the front are helpful. Keep it up Perennial!

EXCELLENT service! Very respectful and attentive interaction. Peaceful and friendly atmosphere. Top of the line products. We went in with one thing in mind and walked out completely comfortable with a different bike. We know very little about bikes but were treated with so much respect and care that left us with a feeling of trust. No undue pressure but enough of a professional help that we were guided towards a better bike for our needs. Make the trip across town to this shop. Unfortunately we didn't receive outstanding service on any of our multiple visits to the bike shop. My wife took our stroller in to change the tire. The brand new tube went flat almost immediately. We took it back in and found out the tire has burst the tube. So they tried to sell us a new tube and tire. I bought them for half the price online instead. They apparently over inflated one of the tires because it popped off the rim. But they quickly dismissed it as a problem with the rim. I'll take it to a different shop next time.

I went in thinking I needed a hitch for an old bike trailer I bought used. The first person I talked to was primarily in sales and took to the maintenance folks. One of them (Hunter) seems to know everything there is to know about trailers. Even though mine is an old brand he hadn't heard of, he recognized that I didn't need anything. He showed me how modern trailers hook up and told me how mine works without buying a thing. And, it's attached to a comfy looking coffee shop right next door. I'll definitely go back.

Had the items I was looking for in stock. A helpful staff member greeted me, answered questions, and made inquiries on what I was interested in for my bike. She also went out of her way to look for an item in the back. She couldn't find it which was fine. Second employee who helped me (not sure where the first one went) was helpful too. More direct in her approach, which was off-putting at first. She was professional yet reserved. Overall, great shop atmosphere with plenty of merchandise and not crowded.

Let me give you some advice, don't go here to get your bike fixed. Go here to get a great bike. Taylor walked me through why it would be better to upgrade my frame as opposed to piecemeal upgrading my components. I anticipated spending about a hundred and I ended up spending about a thousand. What's more I know that's absolutely the best choice, I'mma have a sick bike for years. Go tell these passionate bike folks what a bike means to you. They'll absolutely make sure you get it.

A truly unique shop, they have things other shops don't, like Carradice Bags, Soma Racks, Brooks Proofide leather dressing, and cargo bikes. I've also heard they are a great place for dynamo hubs and related accessories. Knocking a star off because one time I brought my bike in for a minor fix and they lubed my chain, which added an extra $20 to my bill. I wish they had just told me to lube it. For a working class person that’s basically just throwing money away.

Special thanks to Perennial Cycle for exceptional service. Staff was so responsive and downright compassionate in the journey to get this back in action. My P6R is a bit old, too, with many parts no longer available and it got a liiiiiittle complicated. People at Perennial made sense of it for me. Got a nice new wheel, learned how to adjust this derailleur and updated the lighting system. Had a great ride today and couldn't be more thankful.

Update: have been using the Tern HSD's for a few weeks now. Easily the best bikes I've ever ridden. My wife and I really like them, and everyone who rides one wants one too. I snapped the quick link on my chain and walked over. I was hoping to just get a new quick link to ride home, but they only had full replacement chains. They get three stars because they were quick to install the chain, but it certainly wasn't the cheap and easy fix I was looking for. I would have been perfectly happy paying $5-6 for a quick link. Now I have to degrease my drivetrain again before I put my waxed chain back on...

Moved to Minneapolis less than a month ago and am already a repeat customer! These guys and girls have been very welcoming and helpful with assembling and upgrading the 1980s era Peugeot that I brought with me. The mechanics have been very knowledgeable and extremely patient. They have also have a lot of high quality accessories (bags, helmets, lights, etc). P.S. It is very easy to spend a lot of money here. You've been warned.

I called about getting the front brake yoke repaired on my Trek bike ( I don’t think they even sell that brand) and sure they would be able to fix it. I arrived at the store about 45 min before closing and was told they would have it ready in about 30 min. I had no idea they would repair it while I waited. The mechanic also tweeked a few other adjustments. The bill was under the estimated price. Unbelievable service. Thanks

Other shops said "sorry" but Calhoun Cycle called the manufacturer, tracked down the only bike already built and got it shipped in time for the St Paul Classic. Delivery condition was flawless and they made sure we had a good fit and everything we needed before we left the shop. Purchase included free tune ups in the future.

DO NOT recommend for online orders. I got a yepp seat adapter that didn't end up working with my bike. I returned it (paid for shipping both ways) and got an email saying that their policy doesn't allow returns if the item is open and has been installed. Of course I tried installing it before I returned it! They really need to update their policy!!

Brought my Tern GSD in with a gnarly creaking sound coming from the BB area, and the chain guide wheel making noise. Less than 24 hours later the mystery creaking was fixed, the guide wheel replaced, and I was texted that the work was done. They even topped up my battery so that my ride home towing my other bike was stress free. Great service.

I bought a recumbent trike (a Trice) there years ago. I have enjoyed it a lot. The staff were really helpful and friendly in explaining the various models and helping me pick the one that would be the best fit for me. One size does not fit all. I really appreciated that. I had some minor adjustment work done and they handled it just great.

Went in for a tune up and they tried to upsell expensive tires to me. When I said no, the guy finally said they do have some less expensive tires. I ended up replacing one, and I still think the old tire was perfectly fine. He also lacked the cool vibe I have grown to look forward to when visiting bike shops.

This is a great place if you are into folding bikes, recumbents and unique commuter bikes. It's certainly not your average bicycle shop, which can be a good thing because they have a unique offering. If you are into standard brand bicycles, mountain bikes and so on, this isn't the place you want to go.
