Wow! I can't believe how much there was to see here! I attended with a 4th grade class and the museum kept the kids' attention as well. There was a fun scavenger hunt to do where you can search to find items and mark them off like a Bingo game. The kids were seeing cool stuff all over the place and yelling to each other to come see. "Look, a top hat!" and "look, an old violin!" were some of the phrases I overheard. A tiny sampling of the items there include clothes, wagons, toys, quilts, furniture, genealogical books, old Bibles, weaving looms (one was Emma Smith's), sewing machines, an old fire engine, the golden spike, an old camera, and neat portraits. There are portraits covering the walls of the stair wells. We imagined that the images moved like in the movie Harry Potter. It brought those pioneers "to life." Needless to say, the experience was interesting, educational, and moving. What a legacy those pioneers have left for us!

This was an awesome historical museum of the pioneers that settled in the region centuries ago! The staff and volunteers were so pleasant if we had questions they assisted and knew a lot of the historical information. I would recommend to go with family if your looking to do something in the area and learn the history. There is a lot to see approximately 4 floors which includes a basement. It is wheel chair accessible and they have elevators on each floor just separate location for the carriage room which a must see if your not able to see it all. Do arrive early since this location closes at 430 pm. I have placed some photos from my experience but was not able to see everything I hope this reviews helped

Edit: it's not 2020 and I occasionally think about this museum back in Australia. I think this place is a museum done so very well. I also remember the amazing staff member who talked with me for ages explaining the exhibits. I've never been in a museum where I've felt such a personal connection to the exhibits and a love for the place from their staff. She offered me a lovely book on the place which i didn't take ...I always regret that as I'd love to look at it to remind me of my time there. highly recommended I visited this place on a whim and I was not dissapointed. This place has collected so much from the early settlers and it is amazing to see what they brought with them (Steinway Pianos). To have covered wagons so close you can touch them. A must see. The staff were also so helpful.

Walked in and saw my great great great grandfather staring right back at me. That may not be true for all visitors, but all should definitely visit. If you have any interest in the pioneers who settled Utah in the 1800s and especially if you are one of their descendants then this is a must see. For me, seeing handcarts that actually made the trek across the plans was almost a religious experience. Your profound experience may be something very different, but I am confident that you will find it. If you can't find it, the very kind and helpful volunteers are there to help.

Super cute museum & tons of artifacts! I could've spent hours there, but I was pressed for time. There are sets showing life scenes, and the museum is filled with cases of historical items. The docents there were also amazing! They welcomed me, and walked me in. One of them gave me a map, and she told me a few highlights that I should definitely see, and a little bit of the history of them. It's definitely a good spot to see if you're in the area and enjoy history!

Not sure if it’s random selection of who has to lock their purse, or if it’s profiling since I was a female wearing “flip flops, jeans and a black sweatshirt” (to cover my medical condition on my arms). I saw other women with larger purses than me walking around in the museum… museum was awesome, cool artifacts, - purse locker was strange and seemed discriminatory (-1 star). Only me and one other person had to use a locker.

Astonishing, truly — one of the great collections in its category. Multiple floors and many rooms, with expertly organized (and labeled!) items representing every aspect of 19th century settler existence. Includes notable pieces related to LDS leaders, which makes this place an excellent complement to that church’s official museum adjacent Temple Square. No admission fee, just a posted request for charitable support.

Huge collection of material objects. A lot of textiles: if you like clothes, quilts, lace, etc you may be interested. Overwhelming amount of stuff, and some of the collection is just a cabinet of family stuff that had been donated. Some native American objects were mislabelled. Come dressed in your beat pioneer outfit and get in free! Bonnets available for sale at the gift shop.

Came up with a group of seniors citizens from Springville Utah. I made the mistake of starting at the first floor and working my way up to the top. With about 20 minutes to go I just covered that where I should have started was in the basement. From male point of view this was the most interesting part of the museum. I could have spent the whole time down there. I'm attaching a picture of a antique fire engine. Don't miss this floor.

  • Bryan Kruk

Absolutely worth spending some time visiting if you're interested in local history especially since it's free. The ladies at the entrance were super friendly at introducing the museum and its layout. Some things are definitely more interesting than others, but there's a ton of variety and everything was donated by family members of the pioneers.

I'm not Mormon and this place is really cool. If you simply like history, especially Utah history, you'll enjoy the Daughter's of Utah Pioneers museum. I lost myself for hours going over the seemingly endless amounts of artifacts. So many random knick knacks that give a good picture what life was like back then. It's totally free to visit as well. I would recommend the Daughter's of Utah Pioneers museum to any and all.

This is the best museum I have ever been to. The sheer volume of antiques, relics, and photos make you feel like you've taken a time machine to the 1850's, and every item tells a fascinating story. If you are descended from pioneers, odds are you'll find your ancestors somewhere in the building. I found two of my own. There's even a scavenger hunt for kids, so the whole family can enjoy it. Loved it! :)

  • acroapgar

This museum is impressive in the amount of artifacts displayed, almost overwhelming, in fact. There are 4 floors in the main house and 2 more in the carriage house. They have many amazing things, however most are simply displayed with only the item's name and date. There are very few interpretive signs which is too bad as the pioneer's stories are so incredible. Not a place many kids would like.

  • Mary M

This museum was an enlightening experience, offering a captivating journey through time. I was skeptical upon arriving but left fully enjoying the experience and it's extensive collection of pioneer artifacts. They provided valuable insights into the past, making history come alive. It was both interesting and informative, making it a must-visit for history enthusiasts.

I love the collection on display. Such a lovely variety and interesting items. The short movies are enjoyable and give your legs a break if you are there for a long time. It is well organized and the volunteers are delightfully chatty. I do feel that the display boxes are a bit over stuffed and there are quite a few repeated items, but we enjoyed the visit. There is a small cute gift shop too.

  • Margaret Horton

My kids thought this museum was super interesting. This museum has so many different things from the past. My teenagers were "freaked" out by the old black and white pictures of the pioneers who look "ghost-like" They call it the freaky pioneer museum and love taking their cousins and youth groups there. Best part is, that it is free. They accept donations when you walk in and is encouraged.

  • Mark C. (Craniac)

Ok, this is one of the creepier, stranger places in Salt Lake City and worth exploring. They have jars of teeth. Stuff made from human hair. Artifacts from the age of Fraternal Orders. Highly recommended. Two headed animals. Infant skeletons. I am not making this up.

This is one of my favorite museums. There are more things to see here than I could ever fully explore. This great States history has been captured by little treasures that hold stories of real people. Other locations and monuments complement this museums and can be could all over the state. Take the family, go for a minute or spent the whole day. Truly incredible.

  • Nguyen Seymour

What a hidden gem! I had a great time strolling around the Pioneer Memorial Museum and learn about Utah's Pioneers. There are so many artifacts. My favorite was the stained glass painting in the meeting room on the first level (What a beautiful painting!). The museum is well-kept and the staffs are very friendly. Admission is free so you can't go wrong.

Feb. 2019 : Though it was my intention to visit the museum itself, got there just before closing time which is 4PM during Winter season. Tough luck... The historical building itself - located next to the State Capitol - is definately worth taking pictures of. When in SLC again I will make sure to pay the museum a visit.

  • Alyssa Phipps

I went on my daughter's 4th-grade field trip. There are a ton of really cool and interesting things to see. My husband and I planned to take the whole family over the weekend so we could spend more time exploring it but they are closed Saturday and Sunday. We were bummed but plan to go during the summer on a weekday.

  • Janis RB

My Dad and I spent hours on this building. Many of the pioneer tools used for blacksmithing were the same tools his father used. It was an awesome walk down memory lane for him. He also saw exhibits of floor installation tools that were like the ones he had used, only older. It was awesome. No photography allowed.

  • Ryan Sweet

Self-Guided low foot traffic museum. There are a lot of artifacts to be seen, but the displays don't necessarily draw out those that are more significant than others. I wasn't wow'd by this museum, but I enjoyed my visit nonetheless. It was a nice add on while visiting the capital building.

  • ADT Ventor

4 levels packed with pioneer artifacts and information. For being free you could do a lot worse. Need something to do on a Saturday in winter? Go check this place out. It's quite the experience, and you and your kids will learn a ton about Utah's interesting and faith-filled history

  • James Mounce

I was surprised at the extensive display of items. They even had the gold railroad spike from 1st railroad across country. I remember this from history class.

Its a lovely place to learn and much less crowded than other museums. The staff are very helpful. There is a rule that you can't bring backpacks inside, but one of the lovely employees gave me a locker for it! Sometimes its a bit creepy when your on your own so bring a friend.

  • Sarah-Elizabeth Walker

This is a fun museum for an hour or two. They have a TON of stuff that is piled up so you can browse through interesting pioneer artifacts. The building is cool and the staff was really nice and willing to answer questions (but mostly they leave you alone - which I like).

  • Stockton Morris

Lots of pioneer artifacts curated by the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. They have 6 floors chock full of donations. No specific parking lot, but capitol building parking is a short walk away, and there is two hour parking on the west side of the building. More

  • Hendrik Stegall

It's got a lot of cool, old stuff and spooky old portraits inside. They recently changed the hours so that it's only open until 4pm instead of 5pm (at least on Saturdays), so we only ended up with about 30 min to visit. Otherwise, very good. No entry fee.

I visited this museum on a field trip when I was in elementary school and could hardly remember it. Lately, my husband and I have been super into finding our ancestors and learning their stores. We decided it was time to visit this museum.

Given that admission is free, I would definitely say it was worth the money. Plenty of history packed into one location.

We only were able to view from outside the gates, but can't wait to go back to tour when it is open (we were there a few hours before it opened). Village is beautifully set right next to the water. Enjoyed our walk around.

I came here with my niece and we were so pleasantly surprised. Room after room of pioneer belongs. We could of stayed all day. It's a beautiful building near the capitol. I'd highly recommend. A wonderful place.

  • Gary Wright

The museum was clean and the restrooms were clean and the staff was very friendly. It is handicap accessible and the parking for handicap is directly behind the building not out on the street. Thanks

  • Emily “Mumzy77” Hansen

Wonderful place for early pioneer history. You can show your children things that they have learned about. Including the 2 headed lamb! Lovely gift shop and friendly people to talk to and help you.

  • Juan Bendejo

If you love to know how people lived and dressed in the Old West, particularly the Mormons, then you'll appreciate what the museum has curated. The staff were friendly and the artifacts plentiful.
