I ordered (Grubhub) a pastrami sandwich and gumbo that was absolutely DISGUSTING. The gumbo was thick and had the appearance of canned dog food. It had the consistency of congealed stew, even when warm. There was some type of stringy meat in it that was similar to chunks of pot roast meat. There was also a couple spoons of very dry rice on the bottom. I’m not being over critical when I say that this should NOT have been labeled as gumbo and is the single worst thing I’ve eaten in Portland. Period. I did not finish 95% of the gumbo. I literally put the lid back on it and took a step back jump shot into the garbage with no hesitation. The pastrami sandwich was on par with something you’d expect from an Arby’s drive through 5 minutes before they close. There was a sliver of pickle in there too, as a little extra fxck you. It’s a rare occasion when I spend almost $30 (with tip) for a meal and end up going to get a $5 McDonalds burger after.

Well while I love to support mom and pop places, this unfortunately doesn’t get positive points. First off the sandwiches are way overpriced. I’d rather pay less for less meat. Most fell out when I took a bite. And if you want to charge $12.95 for a round sandwich you should include bread options, more veggie options, more cheese than just Swiss or American and maybe chips as a side instead of just slaw. But two more upsetting matters- I found a fly in the sandwich about half way thru it fell out with some of the meat and cheese and the male making my food appeared to have dried blood around the cuticle of his thumb and had no gloves on while making the food. So I’d advise against getting food here, sadly disappointed.

I so badly wanted to have a better experience here. The only reason I'm giving two stars instead of one star is because the people here are very nice. But holy cow, the food was just awful. The corned beef was the driest I have ever had in my life, the tomato soup tasted like week-old cucumber water, but that's not even the main issue that I had with my experience here. The biggest issue I had here was when the owners were making the sandwich that I ordered with their bare, unclean hands and palming and kneading the giant clump of bone-dry turkey that they put on the sandwich. Same with the cheese. We are in the middle of a global pandemic and flu season and the owners can't even put on gloves to intimately handle people's food. I will most definitely not be coming back here.

I love this place!! I'd been looking for someplace to simply get a different bowl of soup every day and it didn't exist in Portland. Then bam, somebody says "try that place on 3rd" and now I have a new favorite lunch spot. I've been there about 10 times now and every time I've really enjoyed the soup. I haven't had the same flavor yet because they're always rotating, though they have some that are always available. They do have more than just soup too. That's just what I'm addicted to. You also get seriously delicious cornbread with every order. I've never been a fan of cornbread really and decline it at most places, but theirs made me realize that it can be really, really good.

Portland Kettle is a family run small business right in the business district of downtown Portland. They serve a variety of delicious soups and sandwiches. I ordered the sandwich combo which is a half sandwich and soup of your choosing. The sandwich was delicious and savory and packed with pastrami, I was surprised it was considered a half, the chili is really good and was very filling. The only downside is that it was a bit dry as if it was sitting for a bit, but delicious nonetheless.

This place is my new favorite discovery! I've been here three times in the last seven days. The soups here are absolutely fantastic, and they provide large servings. They have four constant soups, and soups of the day. I've tried something different here each time and it's always been a great experience. (Special shoutout to the cream of chicken soup!) I usually hate cornbread, but I always finish their free cornbread. Everything they make tastes like they're cooking from their hearts. Also, the service is so quick, yet very nice and polite. I'm definitely coming back and I can't wait to try more of what they offer.

  • Media Lab

Food is pretty good but they often don't use gloves when preparing the food. On 2 visits, they didn't use gloves, touching my bread with bare hands, even grabbed a cornbread slice with bare hands. They are super nice so I went back the second time hoping it was a one time thing like maybe they were out of gloves (they were right there on the back counter) but they did it the second time, so I probably won't go back. 4 stars because they are super nice, food is good, and maybe you don't mind the bare hands thing?

The food was so insanely good - I am not exaggerating when I say they had the best pastrami I have ever had. They are generous with portions and the whole experience was very homey/homemade. I got a pastrami sandwich with classic mustard and swiss and I'm already hooked. This was my first time and I am an instant regular now. And their pickles! I'm very picky about them but these were top tier.

Few things bring me greater joy than seeing an open sign on a deli that’s advertising pastrami at 10 AM. Yes please and many thanks. Boy howdy this pastrami did not disappoint, and the cornbread to go with it was outstanding. I’m a fan of dill pickles so this was the icing on the pastrami cake, but if you’re a bread-and-butter chip person then forego your pickle. Easily the most authentic tasting New York pastrami sandwich on a Kaiser roll I’ve had since being in New York. Delicious. A+. Loved it.

Do you like soup? This place has a large variety of piping hot soup. Changes daily, classic standbys always available, and the corn bread is GREAT. I don't normally enjoy cornbread, but I really like this place. If I don't feel like the special, I get the split pea. Thick, big chunks of ham, flavorful and I don't ever want to add any salt. The owners(?) are genuinely sweet people and really care that their product is good. Get a free taster of your choice to help make up your mind, or just order. Either way they are smiling and helpful every time.

As a Former New Yorker the search for the ultimate and authentic pastrami and corned beef sandwich is a challenge. Well not anymore. OMG we got 1 of each delivered last night. I need to search no more. This was perfect- especially the pastrami! Large tasty sandwiches. Only drawback was it came on a roll instead of rye bread. I can’t complain ! And the cole slaw was perfect. We also ordered the tots. I don’t know what was on them but they were so very delicious! Yeah !!

I have only had this place twice now and the first experience is why i’m giving it two stars the lady that works here is super nice, and the food is pretty okay, but that being said I had went there again and I was greeted with bare hands unwashed all over the meat that was being put on the sandwich and the man making my sandwich had used a old rag to wipe his hands and continued to make my sandwich, giving it the benefit of the doubt I still ate it. It is now 5:30 am and I have food poisoning and haven’t stopped throwing up since.

  • Steve Illgen

I was visiting from out of town and wanted something quick to eat. I came upon this place because 1) it was almost 7:00 PM and every other place was closing down and 2) a lady, who I believe was the owner, told me I could sample anything first before ordering. It was an offer my stomach couldn't resist. I'm glad I came in. The staff was extremely friendly and the food was very good. Their chicken soup and Thanksgiving pocket is delicious and filling. I recommend anyone that is in the area to try it out. You won't be disappointed.

The Food, Service, Prices, Ambiance, and Cleanliness are Definitely 5 stars. The owners Gail and Ian are so friendly, and they have always let you taste any of the soups or specials. They have always had a nice friendly smile, and EXCELLENT service! This is Comfort Food at its Best! The food is truly homemade, with very fresh ingredients. There are plenty of really nice tables and chairs to sit in if you are dining in. They also offer home delivery, and catering.

Best clam chowder I ever had! The cornbread was delicious and though a turkey sandwich is basic it was amazing! The best oven roasted turkey! My granny would love these sandwiches; they're packed with meat and the bun is lit. The customer service was spectacular! Thanks to the mature gentleman and lady who greeted me, as well as the cheese specialist and cashier! I'm here for a hiking trip and I'm sad I can't grab any food to go! The chowder is life!

  • Megan Koler

The ingredients were high quality and fresh and the portions were perfect BUT the Chicken soup was nearly flavorless. The broth was like water, it barely tasted of anything and on top of that it was like there was zero salt used. It was a combination of a very underdeveloped broth with no flavor AND very little salt. I understand not over salting BUT a broth should have some depth without salt. The cornbread was amazing. I would order that again.

  • David Gitlin

What an amazing place. As a former New Yorker, it's so hard to find delis like this out west. When the staff asking me if I wanted mustard or Russian and thing if I wanted a pickle, I had never felt so seen. The corned beef was simple but excellent.

My favorite lunch spot for a quick, warm meal served with kindness. My favorite soup is the lemon, chicken and rice. This place is always busy right at noon -- wait until 12:30 for the crowd to die down. I love the staff here, and they always remember my order and dietary restrictions.

Absolutely worse soup I ever had. I would not even call it soup. The attempt at gumbo was mixture of cheap ingredients cooked for waaaaay to long thrown over the wrong rice. Disgusting. It was also 15 dollars for a serving and a soda. The other soup (the only one they had) was again...basically flavored rice with zero broth. Food in portland has gone to hell.

Simply one of the best fooderies in Portland. Hand made soup, great service, moist cornbread (with whole kernels of corn), and the best pastrami sandwich in the city (I even went on a quest of various Portland restaurants to confirm this). They've got nothing on this pastrami. Try it! The owners Gale and Ian are simply the sweetest. They also have a food cart in Happy Valley and the Food Cartel in Beaverton.

  • Kayla Madsen

A friend and I were in Portland for a concert and ended up eating at Portland Kettle. Best decision ever! The owner and the other worker there were so friendly and went out of their way to make us feel welcome. I had never had a pastrami sandwich before and wanted to try it since that is one of their specialties. It was to die for! Great prices. Great food.

I love Portland Kettle - it's my favorite workday lunch spot. Or sometimes I stop in and grab something to-go on my home. The owners are incredibly nice, they remember their "regulars," and tasting anything new (or new-for-you) is encouraged. PS: The sandwiches and salads are also delicious. Really, really delicious. But if you are here and having a meal that doesn't include soup, you're missing out.

  • Vondra Pierce

Amazing experience!! Four different appetites and we all loved everything we tasted. Many soups and stews to choose from and every one equally delicous. Truly the best home cooking and every dish included the freshest, and sweetest tasting cornbread ever! Pocket sandwiches and salads were also incredibly satisfying. I wish we were local as this would become a regular spot for us. Highly recommend!!!

  • Mary Edinger Shive

Very popular lunch place with freshly made soups. The lemon rice chicken soup was good but needed a bit more flavor outside the lemon. It was a bit crazy and we got our soup but they forgot our sandwiches. We paid and then when we asked about the sandwiches we ordered and were waiting on the cashier had not been given our order so we had to pay twice. BLTA pocket sandwich was good and packed full.

Went for the first time at lunchtime on a Tuesday, and it was bustling. I think the cooler weather made lots of people think "soup!" I got a pocket/ soup combo. Pocket was forgettable. But the soup! I had a special chunky tomato soup and it was delicious. I'll definitely be back, but I'll skip the sandwich and just dive straight into the soup. Cornbread was moist and delicious, too!

  • Whitney Diffenderfer

The owner, Gail waited on me herself letting me try as many of the soups as I wanted before I chose. I got their split pea soup and tater tot casserole and both were delicious. Gail gave me a piece of cornbread fresh out of the oven and it was the best cornbread I've ever had. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who is looking for kind, generous service and delicious food.

  • Kyle Crowley

My soup here was pretty unpleasant. We had high hopes with how busy it was, but I'm assuming it's busy out of convenience for the office buildings nearby. My soup had a really strange taste to it and it was very off-putting. Maybe it was just a bad batch? Or possibly some of their other soups are better? Either way, I will be trying other places for soup before coming back here.

Traveling from Seattle and was directed to this really delightful soup and sandwich shop downtown by hotel staff. I had the chicken and white bean soup and a turkey half sandwich with coleslaw and a pickle. It was fantastic! And it only cost $14 and change. This is a screaming deal folks. If you like homemade, tasty food you must visit this shop!

  • Jennifer

I was visiting from out-of-town and found this hidden gem around the corner from my hotel... it was literally the best chicken noodle soup and cornbread I've ever had! 5+ stars! Every soup comes with a slice of cornbread and it is so unique & different from anything I've ever had... it has this moist vs dry texture and it's absolutely delicious!

  • Allen Stanten

NY Deli Corned Beef and Pastrami to die for! I stopped in, skeptical, but always hoping to find a good version of the NYC/LA Deli sandwich. Well to my surprise, it was da bomb! Highly recommend, and if you put anything other than just mustard on the CB or Pastrami sandwich, NO SOUP FOR YOU!!! Go early, go often, this place is the real deal.

  • ashley arrington

I never post reviews, but I am a huge sandwich and soup person and this place is awesome! I had the Thanksgiving pocket and it is now my favorite sandwich. I have tried this so many places and it never lived up, but this was way different. The turkey was juicy, the stuffing perfect, and I got a side of the cranberry sauce and used it all.

  • Phillip Post

Went for the first time craving some comfort food and a good bowl of soup, glad to say those cravings were more than satiated. Really reminds me of the local deli you go to growing up for a friendly atmosphere and delicious, affordable bite. Portions are generous and the food is great. Highly recommend the chili and corn beef sandwich.

A great little diner in downtown Portland. The staff was helpful answering questions, making suggestions, patient while we dithered on what to have for lunch. Meant to remind one of a New York deli. The soups was good and the pastrami was excellent. The place it self is pretty well worn but who can get staff to clean and buff? More

They are quite friendly here. Chatted with the owner and bit and they were very patient with my indecisiveness. I received quite a few samples and recommendations until I could finally make up my mind. The soups I got we're tasty and reasonably priced. I really enjoyed it and the corn bread was a delight.

  • David Bon

Website advertises Hot pastrami on rye (a classic). When I get there, they inform me that they only carry Kaiser so they can only do hot pastrami on a Kaiser roll (a poor substitute for a classic). Willing to amend this if they start carrying rye again or stop advertising that they have it on their menu

I truly truly love this place. Working next door, work can be rough, but then I come here, get treated with absolute love. The woman who runs the joint is the sweetest, and the food lifts my spirits. On a rainy day, getting a bowl of soup makes my heart sing. This is a must to check out when in town.

  • A D

What a great lunch spot! I had a lunch special of hobo stew with mashed potato, which was probably a little too hearty for lunch but it really hit that comfort food spot on a dreary day. The staff was really friendly and even though I just opted for take out, the seating area looked really inviting.

I called Portland Kettle from Denmark to send chicken soup to my son in Portland who was sick with the flu. The owner was so helpful in helping me to decide what to order and how to get it to my son. And my son and his wife loved the soup (both are feeling better...from the soup maybe?) …

Great specials, great food. For those that like a more savory flavor, keep in mind you will need to add salt to most items. All their soups are great, even thier tater tot casserole. If you have never had it before, ground hamburger, onions, spices, tater tots. Cant go wrong.

  • Maria Castling-Tanas

Inconsistent. Sometimes good but even the same soup can vary wildly. Split pea is generally good, chicken noodle sometimes has flavor, other times is bland. Shepards pie is ok but beef stew tastes like watered down ketchup based. Cashier is rude but the soup servers are nice

Very friendly staff and they let you taste the soup. I liked the fact that the ones I tried were light on the salt. If you need more they have sea salt grinders at every table. A piece of cornbread (with actual corn kernels) comes with the soup and is extremely good.

Both the chili and gumbo are amazing. I haven't had the chicken noodle yet but I only hear good things. and yes... the cornbread is better than they said it'd be.

split pea soup, reuben and gorgonzola salad w tangerine dressing were great! Chicken noodle was a little bit on the plain side. More

This is right place for lunch. Soup and salad, salad and pocket and fresh brewed tea! The lemon rice chicken soup is my favorite! ♥️

Best pastrami sandwich I’ve had in Portland. The chili is on point too. Super friendly staff.
