Very nice neighborhood cafe. 1. The coffee is reasonably priced and taste great. My wife ordered a latte and enjoyed it so much she grabbed another to take home. 2. The breakfast sandwiches taste great but are a little overpriced. We ordered turkey sausage, egg, and cheese croissant and it was $9.50 each. Had we had bacon (we don't eat pork) our sandwiches would have been $5.65. The avocado toast was pretty good however it was soggy and may have had a bit too much butter. It wasn't bad, but yet again. It was $10. All in all we paid about $47 for 2 croissant sandwiches, avocado toast, an orange juice, and 2 coffees. When visiting here you are obviously paying for the location. Our order probably should. Have been $30 tops. 3. The service was really good. They take your order when you arrive and you seat yourself. However, a waitress will bring out your food and drinks and check in on you occasionally. Our waitress was friendly and did a good job of making sure we were happy. 4. The dining area is cozy with a few high top tables. There are live plants and overall really relaxed vibe. The downfall is the space can fill up very quickly. If 5 or 6 orders come in back to back the place will fill up very quickly. When we visited it was rainy but they do have quite a bit of outdoor seating. They also provide free WiFi. 4. The parking is horrible! Street parking seems to be the best option. There is a parking deck across the street but I'm not sure if that deck is public parking.

Came here to enjoy a late breakfast/early lunch with a colleague. She was running behind so I went in to grab us a table. Bad idea. 1st issue - I wasn’t acknowledged or greeted. I was sitting for about 5 minutes when an employee came up to me and rudely told me that they were getting busy and that the customers in line will need a place to sit. You have to order food and THEN sit. She walked away before I could respond. I called her back over to my table to let her know I had every intention on ordering, was just waiting for my guest so that we could order together. Which is a thing right? Sometimes one party arrives before the other and they usually wait to order together? For added context, the cafe had plenty of seating when I arrived. They did get a bit of a rush moments later. If I had been sitting for an unreasonable amount of time I could understand politely asking a guest what their intentions are as we are getting busy and our tables are limited. But her approach was terrible and gave off “get out” vibes. Thankfully there was a bagel shop (Poppy’s) right around the corner and my colleague and I ended up having the best food & service there!

Atmosphere is nice and a cute, but it didn’t feel like it was run super well. No tables were available when we got to the register, so we ordered food to go. Soon after (as we were still waiting on our food), a table opened up so we sat down. We were promptly told we couldn’t sit there as it was only for customers who had a table number. I feel like this system doesn’t work though, because everyone stands in the same line to order…but you only get a table if one is open the instant you place your order so that you can get a number. You’re either lucky or not…there’s no in between. For a coffee shop/cafe, it seems too strict. People should be able to sit as they like as tables open up. Staff were nice and food was good but felt overpriced ($8 for a pop tart that I waited on for 15mins). I wanted to like this place and may give it another try, but I didn’t love it due to the $ and weird seating rules.

We were refused service after quietly standing in line for 20 mins. The cashier led with “we have no more tables and can’t serve you”. We offered to wait so we stepped aside while the next 5 couples approached the cashier. To our surprise, she offered two couples behind us the option to order. My family quietly stepped aside to wait for service only to experience blatant rejection. Gratefully a different employee saw what was happening and offered to seat us immediately and released us to place an order. Thanks for the allyship! We left the place, nonetheless, after the same cashier told us that none of our food selections were available. We will NEVER patronize this place again. Please require your employees to take bias courses. Such a waste since the food looked like it would have been tasty. So sad that we are in 2022 still experiencing the effects of 1965. My heart breaks for my children.

My wife and I stopped by here for a quick bite for breakfast. I’ll start with the one downside that I personally wasn’t a fan of. Once we started ordering, the individual at the front was nice, but not very accommodating. She didn’t seem that invested in us as customers, which is fine, but just something I noticed and the only reason I left a 4 star review. The food, however, is a whole other matter. My wife ordered the Smoked Salmon (a menu item) and I ordered the Breakfast Burrito (also a menu item). The burrito was just the right size with a good amount of sausage and other fillings, but not overflowing. The flavor was excellent. The burrito was filling. All-in-all, a great cafe worth a stop and a bite.

Their breakfast options are refreshingly unique, and the cozy boho interiors provide a comfortable and inviting setting. The coffee served here is simply fantastic, and the attentive staff make your visit even more enjoyable. If you're searching for a cafe that combines creativity, ambiance, and great coffee, this is the place to be. It’s also great place for a coffee date.

I have been here many times. They have great food and well crafted coffee drinks. Their drip coffee is also very good. The B.E.L.T. consistently ranks among the best sandwiches I've had. It's a simple, no gimmicks, BLT plus an egg. What makes it excel is that every ingredient is flavorful and contributes to the sandwich. The bread (sourdough I think) has a good chew. The tomatoes are flavourful and ripe. The deep golden yolk of a good egg provides umami goodness. The bacon is salty but not overpowering. Finally the greens are fresh and give a slight bitterness that brings out the rest. I'll leave something to the imagination and not provide details on the mayo (hint: it's also very good)

Good food, great coffee, good location terrific service. I went here for a morning social event and was surprised by the variety in food and beverage options. The coffee had a nice Rich flavor and the waitress continually came by the duration of time I was there to top me off, and I was there for over 4 hours! After the event, I ended up liking the atmosphere and food I'd had that I ended up staying for lunch and working for a few hours. The food was fresh with high-quality ingredients and a nice balance of heathly and hearty options. I also liked that their internet was decently fast and the atmosphere was perfect for hanging out for a little while and working. I would definitely come back to this place, even if just to meet someone for coffee or lunch.

I came here to unwind during an 8 hour layover at CLT. First off, this place is in a cute hidden nook in South End. It is very peaceful and welcoming! The staff is super friendly and patient and knowledgable about the menu. The cafe is small but they make the best of the space possible with aesthetic decorations. Anywhere you sit will have gorgeous photos. And finally, the menu! The menus are not only aesthetic, but their items are delicious. Everything is fairly priced too, nothing outrageous, and there are many different mill substituted and modifications for allergies available. The ingredients are fresh and service is vedy fast! I recommend for

Overview: trendy corner cafe, order at the counter and seat yourself. Small interior, nice decor and about 10 tables. Relatively small menu with a wide variety of coffee options. I came with my wife for the first time to try breakfast. She ordered the breakfast burrito and I got the breakfast sandwich. Let me start by saying the quality of food was great, I particularly liked the burrito. Unfortunately both cost $8, and while I think that’s a fair price for the burrito it is about twice as much as they should charge for the Breakfast sandwich. Neither came with sides so we ended up spending about $20 and left hungry. Would return to try some other menu options, but overall it’s expensive for the portions.

My husband and two friends went to Roots for the first time on Sunday for brunch. We were all very impressed. The space is comfy and cozy and the service is FAST. You order at the counter and seat yourself. I had the BELT and my husband had the special, which was shrimp and grits, and everything was fresh and delicious. I also had a peach sangria and an iced vanilla latte, both of which I really enjoyed. I'm glad we found a new brunch spot that isn't overrated or has a ridiculously long wait. Although it's a small space, there is plenty of seating (bar, tables, patio). It seems like a good place to hang out and work if you work from home like me. I'd like to give that a try soon.

  • Mary Ramey

I ordered takeout. First time. The macchiato was delicious. Strong, smooth, great flavor. The breakfast sammy was decent. The croissant was buttery, sausage was cooked well done, the fried egg was a slightly overcooked. I ordered the soup and salad combo. Didnt receive the salad. The soup was well flavored but it was a little over oiled. What i was most dissapointed about was the grits. I love goat cheese. But the grits were clunked together and bland overall. Overall opinion, the drink was amazing so i would definitely try their coffee again.

So, I've interacted with two or three people here so far, and they've all been super-friendly. For those who used to frequent the Cluck 'N Cup that lived in the space Roots is now occupying, I'm sure this cafe is going to be subject to scrutiny ;) I ordered the Soba; which is a green curry noodle bowl/salad hybrid. The food was fresh, and had great presentation. My only gripe is with pricing. Take a look at the picture, and you decide if that's an $18 lunch (tip incl.) They're in a high-rent neighborhood, so maybe that's part of it. Their prime, walkable location, good food and nice staff means I'll definitely be back. Just maybe not every day.

Leaving 5 stars as I’m all about supporting local small businesses. Cool atmosphere and nice ambience but the staff isn’t very friendly and they never welcome you or say good morning etc.(today was my 5th visit) $15 for a coffee (one size only) and a breakfast sandwich makes them the most expensive coffee shop in Charlotte. That and it takes 20+ min every time there to get your food. Overall neat place and would go again but would avoid it on the weekends. I was there at 8:45 AM and there was no tables open and I didn’t get out of there until 9:20 AM and I got my sandwich and coffee to go. That’s too long of a wait

The atmosphere here is wonderful! My food was prepared promptly and the servers were very friendly. You order at the front counter, get assigned a number then sit waiting for your meal to be brought to you. Perfect spot for a light brunch and casual conversation.

I really enjoyed coming here last Saturday. Not so much for the food but for the atmosphere. It is a nice quaint little restaurant that does not feel like Charlotte. There are plants and cool accidents all over the restaurant. Saturdays and Sundays are brunch only so that is a little bit of a letdown. I got the chicken and biscuits which came with cornmeal biscuits and chicken thigh chicken. So keep that in mind when you order if you’re partial to those selections. They have cold brew coffee on tap and the staff was very friendly. It is a small restaurant so city may be limited.

  • H

I want to like it....it's walking distance from our house, the atmosphere is cute and the menu (both the previous offerings and new menu) SOUND good, but each time we've come here the food has either lacked in flavor or more importantly food that should be hot has consistently been cold. Not sure why they can't get the food temperature right, but that obviously is a food safety issue, not to mention I really don't enjoy eating cold food. We gave it four tries and with a disappointing experience on three out of four, we won't be back.

  • Dustin Heiland

Food was good but hot $40 good. I had the pastrami sandwich with the soup. Both tasty but to be a "Brooklyn" pastrami sandwich there needs to be about a half pound of meat on the thing. This thing had one slice. For $14 I was not pleased. My wife's salad again was tasty but she felt it didn't come together well. Getting good bites incorporating the different flavors was nearly impossible. The service was great and the food came out fast but for this price point I was not impressed. Still a charming spot might be better for a drink.

  • Brad True

I stopped by here for a quick breakfast on a Saturday. First time visiting. Good location in Southend. Parking was no issue. First impression was the fun decor. Next was a welcoming and helpful server at the counter where you order. I got an egg sandwich with bacon on rye bread. My idea and probably not the best choice for me as I found it a bit on the rich side (lots of bacon, which for some of you is perfect). The coffee was freshly brewed and they use good quality beans. Overall, great experience!

  • Amanda Sullivan

Our group of 5 had no clue what to expect when we walked in and we're always intimidated at places where you order at the counter and seat yourself. The staff was incredibly helpful and patient with us. The food was phenomenal. I got the roots bowl. Simple but delicious. All of us got something different but not a crumb was left on anyone's plates. Even as we left, the staff thanked us for coming in and made us feel truly appreciated. I will 100% be coming back.

This small cafe in South End Village is tucked away in the first floor of a new commercial development. It's compact and rustic, with a mix of 2 and 4--top and tables inside and a couple outside--not exactly great for large group meetings, but cozy for weekend brunch. The menu starts at $8 for breakfast sandwiches, and you'll probably end up spending more on sides if you want a full meal. You order at the counter and get a number. They refill drip coffee at the table.

  • Chris Pio

I had a great first impression at ROOTS Cafe. The atmosphere was great both inside and out, even on a muggy, overcast morning. Plenty of space for pups outside as well. The menu had me flip-flopping between options, and what I ended up with was delicious! Only losing a star because of value. Prices were a little hefty for what you get, so if that's a deal-breaker for you, save this for a special occasion. Otherwise, I highly recommend this tucked away South End spot.

  • George A.

Came here with my wife who happens to be 9 months pregnant. After I found her a seat, we were asked to vacate the table before I even had a chance to order. Do not recommend! If you want customers to order prior to sitting down, have a host or someone who can greet you and point you in the right direction or at least let you know that’s the case. There are plenty of welcoming and accommodating establishments just steps away. Will not be coming back.

Delicious brunch. I had the Bronx bagel... Best pastrami I've ever had. Cold brew coffee was also great; was kind of hard to tell it was nitro, though, didn't have the smooth texture I was expecting, but flavor was great. Patio outside was a great place to hang out, and service was prompt and friendly. I never write reviews but felt compelled with how good this experience was.

I found ROOTS based off of google. I was looking for a new brunch restaurant to attend and decided to go here because of the reviews. The reviews were right... great food, great environment, solid menu and competitive pricing. I was very impressed by the hot honey biscuit. Would definitely recommend this item to anyone!

Great lunch spot with amazingly fast service! I’ve gotten the Roots Bowl and the Veggie Burger Bowl and would highly recommend them (although they are more salads than “bowls”). My sister got the Seared Salmon salad and said it was delicious. The outdoor eating area is delightful, but it fills up fast during busy times.

Best Avo Toast I've tasted in a while! In town for a family wedding. Looked up brunch places near us and based on the customer ratings decided to try it out. My husband had the beef bowl and our son, who is super picky had the grilled chicken sandwich. Everything tasted great. Not crowded and friendly, attentive staff.

Roots is my favorite place to get breakfast in Charlotte. They have so many delicious options, they're one of the best parts of my weekend! They're always quick, courteous, and consistently awesome. They had dog treats in a dog by the door for pups out for a walk! Super clean, awesomely friendly service and fresh ingredients.

We have made it our tradition to go here every Friday morning. The staff is amazing. She remembers our order and calls us by name! The food is terrific, and the vibe is immaculate. I recommend getting the caramel latte and the Basic B with the lattke!

  • Brittany C

Food is so so yummy! The best grits I’ve ever and will ever have. Costumer service was great too! We came at 10am on Saturday and were able to get a seat right away.

This was good, until it wasn’t. After eating it for a while it started to make me feel weird, not entirely sure why. The burger bowl definitely had too much aioli but the mushroom sandwich was good. The environment of the establishment is nice.

Perfect spot to grab a quick, tasty bite. Get the avocado toast with a fried egg on side. Hash brown was incredible as was the oat milk latte! Will be back, for sure!

I just discovered this place. It’s fantastic. And the bathroom is nice and clean too. This may not seem important but it is to some people.

I can’t say why it took me so long to try this spot but now that I have found it I will definitely add it to my breakfast rotation. The Chicken wrap paired with Enderly coffee ( dark and light roast mix) was very tasty. Oh and did I mention

Biggest waste of money and time. I found a piece of hair in my salad and lost my appetite completely. Also the restaurant and its servers are a mess. Nowhere is it clearly stated who can sit vs who can’t. We initially asked for our food to

Great food, but you have to go early on the weekends or you’re SOL when it comes to a table, you’ll end up elbow-to-elbow with others trying to place an order. Staff is super nice but they could probably gain some efficiencies by hiring a

Amazingly delicious - it’s a must! Super fresh and lots of options - was hard to choose. Our daughter had been here before and recommended it. We shared the special, berry stuffed french toast and celebrated Father’s Day with mimosas -

Had Roots Cafe cater a Bridal Shower last weekend (yes...kept to 10 person limit) and the food was AMAZING! We had Turkey and Brie sandwiches, chicken salad sandwiches, salmon/cream cheese with cucumber, salad with fabulous poppyseed

Love supporting local business. Prices reasonable. Food was under seasoned . A good southern potatoes hash does not contain sweet potatoes. Coffee was great. One of the up front staff was snippy with my mom and will not be returning

Had the days special of chicken tortilla soup and a chicken sandwich. So delicious. The Gouda cheese and the bun were my favorite! That soup was the best chicken tortilla I've ever had. Cute space, friendly service. I recommend it.

Hidden gem! Quaint locally owned breakfast & lunch spot just behind the building facing South Blvd. Free parking, but spaces probably go quick. Coffee tasty. Food was fantastic! Their breakfast menu has creative options, including

Great service! The staff is very helpful and the food is tasty. I got the homemade pop tart and omg it was soo tasty. Also i Love the ambiance, definitely check it out if your looking for good coffee, pastries and a relaxing spot.

  • Sam Ross

Our food was good and the cafe is super cute. Didn’t give 5 stars because there is a weirdness with seating that you don’t normally see at cafes, made us feel like we needed to eat and get out fast for Sunday morning breakfast.

A hidden gem! Great spot for locally sourced, thoughtfully prepared, chef-driven eats, great coffee, and a chill vibe. Try the bowls with added proteins for some of the heartiest, freshest, and tastiest lunch meals around.

Yummy croissant and bacon egg and cheese. The almond milk latte was okay, it was slightly slimy? Otherwise the service and food was great!

The hightop chairs were very uncomfortable and my breakfast burrito was not good. I'm not saying don't go because it's a cute little intimate spot for a brunch date. I'm just saying I have no desire to ever go back.

  • Sabrina D

Cute little spot. Order at counter then take a seat. We missed the early morning rush. It was hard to resist the desserts at the counter. They look soooooo good. Definitely worth a visit for a casual quick bite.

  • Leek L

The restaurant is pretty clean and the service was very friendly and helpful. It is a small spot with only one restroom. However, the food was pretty good and well seasoned! I can only speak on the breakfast...

I've only had breakfast/brunch here, but I don't hesitate to say it's the best in Charlotte! Their weekend specials are on point so I rarely order from the regular menu. Give it a shot!

  • Ann Sherman

Avo toast - sandwiches - latke - beautiful salad - wonderful menu offerings - friendly place - peaceful atmosphere- definitely must for a nice meal & pet friendly patio! Thank you!

I had the Bronx Bagel and it was delicious. Freshly baked bagel with a perfect pastrami. Quick and very nice service. Would highly recommend for anyone and will def be coming back.

  • Devin McDaniels

Food was amazing. The Bronx bagels was almost flawless except the pieces of pastrami were on the thicker side. Besides that great atmosphere and quality.
