রাতারগুল জলাবন বা বিশেষ জীববৈচিত্র্য সংরক্ষণ এলাকা (রাতারগুল) বা রাতারগুল সোয়াম্প ফরেস্ট বাংলাদেশের একমাত্র মিঠাপানির জলাবন এবং বন্যপ্রাণী অভয়ারণ্য, যা সিলেটের গোয়াইনঘাটে অবস্থিত। বনের আয়তন ৩,৩২৫.৬১ একর, আর এর মধ্যে ৫০৪ একর বনকে ১৯৭৩ সালে বন্যপ্রাণী অভয়ারণ্য হিসেবে ঘোষণা করা হয়।এছাড়াও ২০৪.২৫ হেক্টর বনভুমিকে ৩১ মে ২০১৫ তারিখে বাংলাদেশের বন অধিদপ্তর বিশেষ জীববৈচিত্র্য সংরক্ষণ এলাকা ঘোষণা করে এটি পৃথিবীর মাত্র কয়েকটি জলাবনের মধ্যে অন্যতম একটি। এই বনকে বাংলাদেশ সরকারের বনবিভাগের অধীনে সংরক্ষণ করা হয়েছে। রাতারগুল জলাবন চিরসবুজ এই বন গোয়াইন নদীর তীরে অবস্থিত (গোয়াইন নদী সারি গোয়াইন নদীর সাথে মিলিত হয়েছে) এবং চেঙ্গির খালের সাথে একে সংযুক্ত করেছে। এখানে সবচেয়ে বেশি জন্মায় করচ গাছ (বৈজ্ঞানিক নাম: Millettia pinnata)। বর্ষাকালে এই বন ২০–৩০ ফুট পানির নিচে নিমজ্জিত থাকে। বাকি সারা বছর, পানির উচ্চতা ১০ ফুটের মতো থাকে। বর্ষাকালে এই বনে অথৈ জল থাকে চার মাস। তারপর ছোট ছোট খালগুলো হয়ে যায় পায়ে-চলা পথ। আর তখন পানির আশ্রয় হয় বন বিভাগের খোঁড়া বিলগুলোতে। সেখানেই আশ্রয় নেয় জলজ প্রাণীকুল। সিলেট জেলার গোয়াইনঘাটের ফতেহপুর ইউনিয়নে, গুয়াইন নদীর দক্ষিণে এই বনের অবস্থান। বনের দক্ষিণ দিকে আবার রয়েছে দুটি হাওর: শিমুল বিল হাওর ও নেওয়া বিল হাওর।সিলেট শহর থেকে এর দূরত্ব ২৬ কিলোমিটার। নামকরণসম্পাদনা সিলেটের স্থানীয় ভাষায় মুর্তা বা পাটি গাছ "রাতা গাছ" নামে পরিচিত। সেই রাতা গাছের নামানুসারে এ বনের নাম রাতারগুল। জলবায়ুসম্পাদনা সিলেটের উত্তর-পূর্ব দিকে অবস্থিত ক্রান্তীয় জলবায়ুর এই বনটিতে প্রতিবছর ভারী বৃষ্টিপাত হয়ে থাকে । বনের সবচাইতে কাছে অবস্থিত সিলেট আবহাওয়া কেন্দ্রের তথ্যমতে এখানে বার্ষিক গড় বৃষ্টিপাতের পরিমাণ ৪১৬২ মিলিমিটার । জুলাই মাসটি সবচাইতে আর্দ্র যখন বৃষ্টিপাতের পরিমাণ প্রায় ১২৫০ মিলিমিটার, অন্যদিকে বৃষ্টিহীন সবচাইতে শুষ্ক মাসটি হল ডিসেম্বর । মে এবং অক্টোবরে গড় তাপমাত্রা গিয়ে দাঁড়ায় ৩২° সেলসিয়াসে, আবার জানুয়ারিতে এই তাপমাত্রা নেমে আসে ১২° সেলসিয়াসে । ডিসেম্বর মাসে এখানকার আপেক্ষিক আর্দ্রতার পরিমাণ প্রায় ৭৪ শতাংশ, যা জুলাই-আগস্টে ৯০ শতাংশেরও বেশি । উদ্ভিদবৈচিত্র্যসম্পাদনা বৈশিষ্ট্যমন্ডিত এই মিঠাপানির জলাবনটিতে উদ্ভিদের দু'টো স্তর পরিলক্ষিত হয়। উপরের স্তরটি মূলত বৃক্ষজাতীয় উদ্ভিদ নিয়ে গঠিত যেখানে নিচের স্তরটিতে ঘন পাটিপাতার (মুর্তা) আধিক্য বিদ্যমান । বনের উদ্ভিদের চাঁদোয়া সর্বোচ্চ ১৫ মিটার উচ্চতা পর্যন্ত বিস্তৃত । এছাড়াও অরণ্যের ৮০ শতাংশ এলাকাই উদ্ভিদের আচ্ছাদনে আবৃত । বনের স্বাস্থ্য সন্তোষজনক । এখন পর্যন্ত এখানে সর্বমোট ৭৩ প্রজাতির উদ্ভিদের সন্ধান পাওয়া গেছে । এই বন মূলত প্রাকৃতিক বন হলেও পরবর্তিতে বাংলাদেশ বন বিভাগ, বেত, কদম, হিজল, মুর্তাসহ নানা জাতের জলসহিষ্ণু গাছ লাগিয়েছে।এছাড়া জলমগ্ন এই বনে রয়েছে হিজল, করচ আর বরুণ গাছ আছে পিঠালি, অর্জুন, ছাতিম, গুটিজাম। আছে বট গাছও। প্রাণিবৈচিত্র‍্যসম্পাদনা জলমগ্ন বলে এই বনে সাপের আবাস বেশি, আছে জোঁকও; শুকনো মৌসুমে বেজিও দেখা যায়। এছাড়া রয়েছে বানর, গুঁইসাপ; পাখির মধ্যে আছে সাদা বক, কানা বক, মাছরাঙ্গা, টিয়া, বুলবুলি, পানকৌড়ি, ঢুপি, ঘুঘু, চিল এবং বাজপাখি। শীতকালে রাতারগুলে আসে বালিহাঁসসহ প্রচুর পরিযায়ী পাখি, আসে বিশালাকায় শকুনও। মাছের মধ্যে আছে টেংরা, খলিসা, রিটা, পাবদা, মায়া, আইড়, কালবাউশ, রুই সহ বিভিন্ন জাত। পর্যটন আকর্ষণসম্পাদনা জলে নিম্নাংঙ্গ ডুবিয়ে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকা বনের গাছগুলো দেখতে বিভিন্ন সময়, বিশেষ করে বর্ষা মৌসুমে এখানে ভিড় করেন পর্যটকগণ। বনের ভিতর ভ্রমণ করতে দরকার হয় নৌকার, তবে সেগুলো হতে হয় ডিঙি নৌকা ডিঙিতে চড়ে বনের ভিতর ঘুরতে ঘুরতে দেখা যায় প্রকৃতির রূপসুধা। তবে বনে ভ্রমণ করতে অনুমতি নিতে হয় রাতারগুল বন বিট অফিস থেকে।
